On a Sunday evening, with three tables full, the food was served late at every table. Some people at each table had finished their food before the others were served. One woman had to ask for her food to go because they had been waiting

This is the WORST Thai place in Minneapolis. I went there for lunch with a few friends. We ordered stir frys, which should not take long to make. We waitied for over 45 min and our food never came. The place was not busy at all, so there is no excuse for the wait. The servers never stopped by to apologize for the wait or assure us that the food was coming. When we finally told the server that we were leaving b/c it was taking to long there was no apology just and "ok" from the server. WORST SERVICE I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED. The place smelt like uring and was old and dingy. I would not recommend this place to anyone, steer clear! Check out Tum Rup Thai in uptown it is 100% better.

I used to live above Ruam Mit so I have experienced some of the cities best Thai. And since they moved down the street on St. Peter, they are still pretty good under new ownership.
I have also gone to Taste of Thailand on Selby which like EVERYONE says, has poor service but excellent food. However at their new location on just off White Bear Ave. they are much cleaner than the other location but every dish seems to have sugar added to it. We had the luch buffet today, and I sampled everything on it. All the dishes seemed to have huge amounts of sugar added into them. Even the fish sauce was thick and syrupy. Not at all an enjoyable meal. And forget about being productive at work after that sugar buzz wore off.

The pineapple fried rice is delicious beyond words. Order it with chicken and make it spicy. The special egg rolls and accompanying sauce are also super tasty. Also good: pad thai, pad khing, every soup on the menu, the spring rolls, the entire buffet!!

Taste of Thailand appears to have just undergone a renovation around Labor Day 2008, but making the inside look nicer, but still don't seem to appreciate the "business of running a restaurant". We're all familiar with their 5-star food and 1-star service (don't answer the phone, frequently out of many items on the menu, line of people waiting to be seated with empty tables nearby....standing side by side with those waiting in line to pay, being told upon picking up take-out order that they didn't have your dish but failed to call you to tell you this even though they had your phone number on the order, then not even thinking to apologize...). Saturday night at 7 pm...we called to order take-out, but no one would answer the phone. Waited 5 minutes...dialed again...again, apparently nobody was "tasked" with answering the phone that night. We ended up driving all the way to Tea House for our dinner, even though Taste is a 5 minute walk away. It's a shame, as I've seen restaurants that are run efficiently like True Thai (Franklin Ave) and Cam Ranh Bay (Eden Prairie), and they seem to do it with the same number of employees. Taste just doesn't even to be aware of how much business they've lost because of their lack of organization.

Pros: 62-Fish, Fish Cakes (When They Have Them), Squid Salad, Papaya Salad

Cons: Total Absence of Any Organization or Customer Service

I love this place! My boss turned me onto it when he ordered it for an office lunch. Now we order from there almost once a week! They're very friendly and remember us when we call. The food is always great and fresh..I would definitelly recommend this to anyone! I was wary about ordering Thai food at first because I have never had it, but after eating from here, it is now my favorite kind of food!

Even before I entered Taste of Thailand my instincts told me to leave. There were foot tall weeds lining the entrance to the restaurant and a stain on the side of the building that looked not unlike someone had thrown a large piece of dung at the restaurant (maybe a previous customer?). I, of all people, know not to judge a book by its cover, so I looked past the weeds and dirt and entered the restaurant. I don't know whether the smell inside originated from the recently ended lunch buffet or if the owners breed gerbils in the backroom, all I can say for sure is that the entire restaurant smelled like the pet store at the Har Mar Mall. My partner and I were lazily directed to seat ourselves. Thankfully, sensory fatigue soon set it and the smell of caged animals and wood chips was replaced with the sweet and tangy smell of cream cheese wanton sauce and spring rolls. The wantons were shriveled and small with half as much cream cheese as I have seen in other restaurants. The self-proclaimed "Best Spring Roll in the Twin Cities" were underwhelming, to say the least. My partner, a woman once described by a former lover as "a bit of a masochist", made sure to order her Pad Thai extra-spicy. I am much more delicate than her, both in sexual spirit and in stomach, so I ordered my favorite dish, Tom Yum soup, medium. When our food was brought out, however, her's had barely any spice at all and mine was so spicy I thought I was going to cry. We considered sending them back but, despite being the only customers in the entire restaurant, the waiter did not return to our table to check on us. I tried her dish as well as mine and the strongest flavor in both was the salty taste of MSG. Halfway through our meal, my partner was able to flag down a busgirl and demand a spice wheel. Unfortunately, this did little to spice up the dish because the chili sauce was so old it had lost all flavor. The ambiance was unpleasant, the servers were unfriendly, and the food was unappetizing.

Pros: I know never to eat there again

Cons: I already ate there

I've eaten here five times and five times I've been told "Sorry, we're out of that today" of something that I attempted to order. They run out of things as basic as chicken, shrimp, all coke products, etc. The service is always lousy, the atmosphere horrible. The only reason I've come back is the food is decent. They've had this reputation of lousy service for at least five years, but they don't seem to do anything to correct it. Too bad because the food is pretty good.

Pros: If they have what you want in stock, the food is decent

Cons: Horrible atmosphere, lousy service, run out of ingredients frequently, overpriced for the whole package.

They make mistakes for orders what I was heard. However, I experienced same thing. If you ask them for your preference for hot or not hot, you should be really careful. We order the foods over the phone and asked them for not hot at all for kids. Brought back the ordered foods home, put on dishes, and saw the lots of hot peppers in. Called them for what I can do for this, they said I have to bring all the food back to them to show them and they can see if they made mistakes. And then, they can fixe it. Worst service ever. Never say sorry at all.

This is probably about the third time I have eaten here. This will be the last. This place is renound for slow service. The wait staff was not familiar with the dishes on the menu. It took forever for us to get our food. When the first 4 of our entrees arrived they were not hot. The 5th entree did not arrive until everyone else had finished their food. I thought I would give this place another try because our favorite Thai place is closed on Sundays. What a huge mistake.

Well, every time I order from them (which is often) I feel like I am inconveniencing them by spending money there. I love the food. It's delicious. But they need more staff and a larger space. They are generally rude at the check-out desk and on the phone. I just called tonight and after having it alternate each call from a busy signal to ringing with no answer, someone finally answered, asked if I could hold, then hung up on me. I was so set on their delicious food that I called back again a bit later. When I said I wanted to place a take-out order the guy said "It's gonna be 45 minutes....I just had someone complaining about how long it took to get their food so if you can wait, fine...but I don't want anymore complaining!!!" It just feels like they have no appreciation for the customer. But again, best Thai I've ever eaten....which makes it hard to stay away. And makes it painful to keep giving them my money.

It's great for take-out. Service eating in needs to improve. Diners are forgotten. They are always out of dessert (list is also limited). Food is delicious though. Ambience, what ambience?

As a little kid, I can remember going to Ruam Mit, owned by the same sweet, old, Thai lady.
She always used to bring me out a plate full of oranges on the house, and I'd gobble them down. Then she opened Taste of Thailand, the first one on Selby Ave.
I've always loved her dishes, made with the best sauces and ingredients, and her unique shapes she cuts those little carrots into!
She's opened up several more now. Now I'm 18 and I still find myself eating at her restaurants 10 years later. Same great food. Unchanging, friendly, atmosphere.

I couldn't let that bad review sit out there on the web without getting in my 2 cents to balance the comments. I have eaten at TOT probably 50+ times and haven't had a bad meal yet. Even their buffet is worth trying [and I find buffets usually mediocre]. Their fresh spring rolls are to die for and their Tum Yum soup is unrivaled anywhere in town. As a matter of fact, it's only 9:30 in the morning and this writing is making me hungry! Go there! But be warned: any place this good is often pretty crowded. I often go at off hours like 3 on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. Enjoy!

This area of St Paul boasts a plethora of selections in Thai cuisine but Taste of Thailand wins in flavor.

The restaurant itself is a little run down, akin to a-hole-in-the-wall establishment. But don't let that scare you away. The dishes are priced reasonably, and the food is authentic, rich in curry aroma and flavor.

There are plenty of choices on the menu for every taste. My favorite is 34B, a moist & tender duck curry.

This place can become very busy. If you are calling for take out sometimes the phone can ring 30 times before they pick up. Also during busy times, your take out may take a lot longer than you were told on the phone.

PROS: excellent food, good prices
CONS: can be very busy

Taste of Thailand is what I like to call a G R E A T little "dive." What I mean is that the food is fab and very reasonably priced but the surroundings make me think of circa 1975.

My recommendations:

Special Springrolls - they're served with delicious peanut sauce - A FIVE STAR RATING!!!!!

Pad thai with or without shrimp is delish.

Thai Iced Tea - under $2 bucks and YUM YUM YUMMY!

PROS: Great food at a very reasonable price
CONS:

What can I say about this place? The food is ok-good, but the experiences were almost always bad. There was one time where we had to wait for almost 1/2 hour for the food! but let me tell ya, there was one time where we waited long, and they got our orders all mixed up, 8/12 of our orders got their orders wrong, beef was replaced with pork, mild with hot, mild with not spicy, things like that.
the place is cold. I don't know what else to say. The food is good, but not worth it.

Taste of Thailand is a great little nook. We ate there last night, and the food was fantastic! Very affordable, also. I just wanted to comment on the great service we had, too. Our sodas were kept topped up, and we didn't have to wait very long at all for our food. Overall, Taste of Thailand was a great place, and I will definitely be going back there!

This was the worst dining experience I've ever had. We did take out. They lost ourt order. The owner chewed us out for 20 minutes because she thought we ordered from the Fridley restaurant (We didn't). She called all her other restaurants to confirm this and still insisted that we go out to Fridley to pick the order there (again, we ordered from St. Paul). She then called our phone number and made our friends (who were waiting for the food) recite the phone number we called (the St. Paul number). ONLY THEN DID SHE PUT OUR ORDER IN! We were at the restaurant for an hour. No apology or any acknowedgment of their error. To top it off, when we finally got home with our food, she called AGAIN to tell us how to do it next time. There won't be a next time. It was completely unpleasant.

While the food here is good and is almost equal to Ruam Mit the service is the worst I've ever experienced in any restaurant ever. While we were seated quickly we were left alone for at least 20 minutes, no water, no someone will be with your shortly. Just left alone. While I know some Thai restaurants are known for spotty service, this was just awful. The food may be worth the wait for some people but I think better food and service can be found at Ruam Mit. If you do take the risk anything here with sauces is bound to be wonderful, the currys and Pad Thai are excellent. The spring rolls and dipping sauce almost rival Ruam Mit therefore wonderful. Free parking is a plus.

The food at this dumpy little neighborhood restaurant is phenomenal. Service can be slow, and it invariably takes 15 minutes longer than they say it will take if you order out, but it's worth the wait. I could eat 2 gallons of their chicken curry (and almost have). Spring rolls are also excellent.

Better than most other Thai restaurants, though Ruam Mit comes close.

So some go to MSP and cheer for Sawatdee
chanting "atmosphere inferiority"
to the "Taste" in the STP
But the walls aint there to see, just to keep out snow and cold.

The thing to know about the "Taste"
is that its plates are off the hinges...
delectably delicious.

Sure, share that Pad Thai as two,
but don't leave the meal that way!
You haven't tasted tasty Thai
without Chicken Satay!

Yum!!! You know that you love it!!!

So go grab yourself a bite!
afternoon or night!
Right now, for lunch or dinner!
Taste of Thailand is the winner!

Ha ha ha. I love this place.

The food is worth overlooking the need for an update. It's been said that you should only come if you have time to wait in line, but I've only had to wait once or twice- at peak dinner hours. The lunch buffet is out of this world, but not for the timid. These are not Minnesota spices! Waitstaff are friendly (most), just not overly attentive or fast. If the ambiance were better, I couldn't get a seat, so I hope they don't re-do it soon.

Pros: Food, inexpensive, Food

Cons: ambiance, crowded, slow

While service may be slow at times, the food is well worth it! My sister moved out of the state and she has to go to T of T everytime she comes back to visit.

The curry I had, I didn't recognize has no complex spices to it. The heat seemed to come from all hot pepper. The Pahd Thai was sweet and tasted like Ketsup. I am glad to go back to LA.

I spent 2 months in Thailand and this is by far some of the best, most authentic Thai I have had in any city. Forget about the decor and concentrate on the food!!!! Only restaurant in the Twin Cities that will actually give me food "Thai hot."

My girlfriend introduced me to the delightful tastes of Taste of Thailand. It became our little spot. Now we discovered the new one that opened not too long ago close to our apartment in East St. Paul. Thank You

Arriving at 8:30 p.m. on a weekday night, Taste of Thailand was busy, but only required a short wait. It was worth it. My companion and I enjoyed sweet iced teas while waiting for our main dishes. I had a vegetable curry that was a good prtion, but I finished it, nonetheless. The service was a little sparse, but did accomodate us, letting us stay after close to eat dessert long after the other guests had departed. Mangoes and sticky rice was never so good. Very affordable. I will make many returns.

This is my favorite Thai food restaurant. It is truly one of St. Paul's many treasures. They have a large menu with great descriptions. Even those who have never eaten Thai before (or are a bit afraid to) can find something to suit their taste. The portions are quite large and the price is very reasonable (most entres $7-10).
