I know they are known for breakfasts, which are always excellent. But I really enjoy dinners. Nice atmosphere, and I appreciate the excellent and tasty selection of vegetarian entrees. It has become my go-to place for dinner!

I have been here several times and I always have good food and good service. I especially love coming here in the summer when I can sit on the patio.

I visited French Meadow Cafe on Lyndale on a Monday night with my family of 6. The staff was acommodating to our big group, and even let us change the reservation time with no hassle. The ambiance was great and the service was excellent!

Breakfasts are always better here. You generally will expect to stand in line, but you know everyone in front of you knows the same thing - good food takes time when lots of people want it. I am here often enough for breakfasts, but decided to pick up some later lunch / dinner items more than a few times. The crowd is different, and it seems like the breakfast crowd is in a more easy-going mood? Food is always good any time, but the crowd doesn't add to the pleasure during evenings.
Pros: Breakfast -everything rocks!
Cons: Dinner - moody crowds.

They have a good doughnuts, I love them. The staff are always happy and everything they make is like heaven... Maybe it could be because I have a soft spot for bake goods but it it delicious.

Was holding hands with my man. Got sneered at by waiter.

Food was cold. Argued with us when we sent it back.

We walked...after demanding a refund.

My boyfriend and I went out for coffee and hash browns today and decided to try out French Meadow. We split a big order of hash browns because the girl said it would be cheaper and just as much food. When they got to our table we couldn't believe that was the BIG order, they were waaay too crunch (and I normally like crunchy hash browns) and they were cold. The coffee was okay, not worth $2 for a mug though. I don't think I'll ever be going back here. But if you're looking for a place to feel like a pretentious hipster, this place is probably right for you

this place is so great. its like someone crawled inside my head and said WHAT DO YOU LOVE and then put it all together under one roof. I went there for the first time, this weekend and ended up back there again 2 more times before i left. organic food, homemade bread, fresh brewed coffee, juice, pastries-everything i had was wonderful. i wish you were open where i live.

Came here on a Saturday morning. It was packed. There were toddlers running around and in between people?s legs. It was LOUD. You have to wait in line and order your food and drinks, pay. Then move over to another line to pick up your juice/coffee etc. Well that line was completely screwed up and no one made our drinks, I guess they were lost in limbo. Once we got our drinks you have to fight in a tiny space to get sugar packets and creamer. I suggest you use your elbows as weapons. Expect to be stepped and poked by children whose parents need to keep them on a tight leash. Once you find a dirty table sit down and wait. Our food runner walked aimlessly around the restaurant and outside holding our food before he spotted us. Our food was cold. I got some sort of vegetarian Cajun scrambled eggs, potatoes, and vegan sausage. Imagine wet cardboard, salt and something that resembled cough medicine. I will NEVER go back here again. If you do go, expect to over pay for bland/horrible food.

The food here is incredibly fresh, and the atmosphere is friendly. Almost anything you order is sure to please, but I would recommend their hummus wrap, breakfast quesadilla, and tomato basil soup. Their hemp bread is also a great item to bring home.

I have been here for breakfast, dinner for many times including my Valentine's Day dinner. Mostly, the food and service were quite good. Just once, I waited my turkey sandwich for 30 minutes but was not heated as I wanted it to be. When it was sent back, the center was still cold. But most of the dinning experience were good, if you are organic food lover, it's a right place to go.

I've been here two times and both times for Sunday brunch. They have a nice selection of breakfast items. They use organic fruits and vegetables when they can and have healthful options for vegetarians. It can get a little busy so you might want to avoid high traffic times. You order like you would at a fast food restaurant, up at the counter, but then you get a sign to put on your table and they bring you the food when it is ready. I had the spinach omelet and the other time I had a bowl of oatmeal and fruit. I love the French Meadow Bakery sprouted grains and yeast free bread.

I have never walked through the door of this place and seen it empty! The line generally is to the door, which can't be bad! You walk in, wait in a line to order, and they bring your order to your table- if you can't find a table they will generally take time time to help you find something. This is not a place to go and take your time, it's a place to go in, eat, and get out. They serve excellent and delicious breakfast and also lunch- i have never been in during dinner hours. If you are in the uptown area, stop in for a bite or a bowl of soup on a cold winter day!!

The food here is very good and a nice resource for natural foods in Minneapolois where they are surprisingly scarce. They could use a larger selection of take out or pre-made products for this specialized market and it would be nice to see these health foods become more affordable. People shouldn't have to break their budget to eat healthy! I have seen their breads in the freezer section ofsome stores and figured stopping here would give me a larger selection-but unfortunatley, not really.

Terrific food, great service, great ambiance.
Best stuff: 1/2 price wine on saturday night!
Interesting and creative menu w/ tasty veggie options (I love the tempeh and fish offerings!)
Great service!-I dont know what others have been complaining about,
I've been going there for 5 years and never had a problem!
Great home-made breads
Had many a romantic dinner here.

The not so great:
Good breakfasts, but WAY too noisy. I stopped going for breakfast because I couldnt hear myself think!
Deserts: not so good. Funny that their breads and foods are great! But the deserts always taste kinda stale
and overly sweet and uninspired to me.
(Check out "Patricks Bakery for some really yummy pastries!)
Too bad Lyndale ave is so busy, I'd love to sitoutside, but dont like breathing car exhaust.

This place has changed from a deli into a restaurant but still offerings healthy food. I am a very picky health food eater because I want my food to taste good and be good for me. I ordered the rice and veggies. This restaurant is a good choice for me when meeting friends.

PROS: Lots of healthy vegetables in the food
CONS: not enough choice for wheat and soy allergic people

breakfast here is awesome, ambiance a bit sterile but I think that is due to the cafeteria style seating. The service is efficient and good. The menu is a bit hard to read (on the walls behind the counters) for us old timers, but the choices are wonderful. Will be back soon.

I've been here a few times for breakfast and it's always good. It gets really busy though. The bacon and egg croisant sandwich is fabulous. I just went for dinner with my fiance and we both agreed it was only average, and too expensive for what you get. The miso salmon was too salty and didn't have much flavor; the chicken fettucine was also bland. The portions weren't very large for $18, and the service wasn't that great, just average.

So to sum it up - go for breakfast and you won't be dissapointed, but dinner isn't worth it.

They really do have wonderful natural foods at the French Meadow Bakery in Minneapolis.

My sister in law is vegan and my grandmother has celiacs which requires gluten free foods. After hunting all over to have things on hand for their special dietary needs for when they visit us, we heard of this place!

There is a large variety of baked goods as well as a tasty deli. We enjoy the availability of these specialized and tasty foods since they are really hard to find in regular stores. We have noticed recently that they do sell some oftheir wares in the nicer grocery centers but their actual bakery is much fresher and impressive!

French Meadow's dinner has come along way, especially for vegans and fish lovers. We recently had an amazing risotto with acorn squash and shiitake mushrooms. My companion had their pasta special, and apparently they make their own pasta.

On a hot, muggy Saturday night my boyfriend and I were both hungry for something light. After reading about French Meadow Bakery on CitySearch, we decided to give it a try and we were both very happy that we did! We were seated at a quaint little table outdoors where we could take in all the activity on Lyndale. Parking was no problem, there is a small lot next to the place and plenty of free spaces on the street. We ordered bruschetta as an appetizer and both had the greek salad with a glass of wine that the waiter recommended (which was excellent). All the ingredients were very fresh with a lot of flavor. We were too stuffed for dessert, but if their desserts are anything like their breads, I'm sure they are delicious! Perfect place for a relaxed date, we'll definitely go back.

True carnivores will go hungry here as there is no red meat in sight. Went for a Saturday dinner and the place was packed. Nice wine selections for a small list and the half price deal on Sat nite rocks! The noise level is high so there will be no intimate interludes here but the food was great, even better than Cafe' Brenda but in the same style. (Oddly there is not much in the way of French anything here) The miso salmon was outstanding in every way. Desserts were very well done. Service was average but friendly. If you are a picky eater, this is probably not the hot spot for you for dinner unless you are really into organic/vegan types of cuisine.

I stopped in looking for a quick bite on a Saturday afternoon. It was a good decision. Quite a large selection of different foods such as sandwiches, soups, and salads. Deserts looked great as well. I got the turkey and bacon crossant, and it came with chips and salsa which was a pleasant surprise. It is pretty much like a Culvers as far as service. You order at the counter, you are given a placard (which takes the place of a number) and then the food is brought out to you, so dont expect to be waited on. Definately worth a look.

I had been excited to try this place for some time. However, the food was terrible and the service wasn't great. The belgium waffle I had was rock hard. I couldn't even saw through it with the knife (maybe they should serve a steak knife with it). They were also out of clean coffee cups and spoons. You can get so much more at other restaurants that actually provide service and better food for less money and in less time. I was bummed.

A girlfriend and I visited this place over our lunch on a Tuesday. There were plenty of parking spaces and plenty of tables too.

I ordered an iced tea, and the sandwich/soup combo - totaling $9.10. Typically I'd say this was way too spendy for a lunch, but the food was excellent. The hemp seed bread was just crunchy enough. The broccoli cheese soup was light and refreshing although the pieces of broccoli were whole, so I had to take them out of my soup and cut into little pieces.

I was confused on how to order and get your food. My iced tea was placed on top of the bakery display, but I wasn't told. Later, after I had received my lunch, my friend noticed my tea--why didn't the runner notice I was missing a drink or why wasn't I told where to pick it up?

For breakfast...I like french meadow. I like sitting outside, i like drinking ridiculously expensive fresh squeezed orange juice, I like huge blueberry/hempseed pancakes, and I like half priced wine on saturday. But that's just it; I only like it. The breads and pastries are very good and the dinner items are pretty good AND organic. It's very busy, especially on the weekends, for breakfast. Too busy to find a place to sit sometimes. But they are efficient, and for the volume I do not think they've ever messed up an order. I want very badly for them to make something I love...but for now, I'll have to wait. I recommend the french toast and the cinnamon rolls.

I, with three others, had an enjoyable late-evening dining experience at French Meadow. The food was excellent with nothing to complain about. I had a wonderful grilled cheese sandwich made with perfectly toasted bread. I also sampled two different and delightful quesadillas. Our server was not adept at describing the specials, but otherwise I had no complaints regarding her. We got good value for our money, but if a $9 sandwich scares you, you might want to consider dining elsewhere.

Buy the bread. Don't waste your time on the food. Trust me on this one. The last (and final) chance I gave this place, I paid almost $13 for a veggie burger and a root beer, and believe you me, the burger might as well have been a garden burger made in my microwave. The bread and desserts, however, are fantastic. My overall feeling is that French Meadow is attempting to be too many things at once: bakery, coffehouse, restaurant. It should stick to what it does well; not attempt to pass off mediocre food as high quality.

I don't know what these other people are talking about- French Meadow was GREAT! I am in Minnesota visiting relatives but normally live in California, and happy to say that FM is the closest I've seen to California cuisine! In general, I think Minnesota restaurants are awful with no distinction or originality (all the same kitschy dive bar type atmospheres or fast food), but FM had only the freshest vegetables, great ambience, wide-ranging menu, VERY friendly staff, etc. It also had that whole laid-back California attitude going on and was casual, but still good-looking, too. I was so happy to be there- I just breathed a sigh of relief!!

We had a not-so-great breakfast/brunch experience (11:30 am Labor Day). The place was crowded, the service was slow, and if you wanted a clean table you had to clean it yourself. The quiche was like rubber in the middle. Seriously - we could barely get the fork through the first bite. Perhaps they should have concentrated on the quality of the quiche instead of the quantity of the eggs in it. The pancakes were great, but they didn't come with enough syrup, and the hemp nuts mentioned on the menu were absent on the cakes. The sourdough toast turned out to be a strange wheat toast (burned, of course) that seemed to be full of birdseed. I'll try this place again because the menu items were plentiful and interesting, and the prices were right. But the first time wasn't so great...

Although the wait staff is notorious for being rude and put-out by being asked for anything, it is worth going for the food, at any time of day. The pastries and fresh breads are to die for!

My first and last experience with the French Meadow Cafe was not an impressive one.
Putting aside the the lack of employees to assist customers on a busy Sunday morning, the vegetarian food was quite scary. I ordered what the French Meadow calls a "Tempe Reuben". I do not know where they got the idea that it is a reuben of any sort is beyond me. The sandwich was irrecognizable as anything. It looked and tasted like someone's regurgation. The biggest mystery about that sandwich was what was it that they were trying to pass off as thousand island dressing?
In conclusion, the sandwich was orange, runny, smelly, and very distasteful. Maybe if I had ordered something else from the menu...but if you are a vegetarian that sometimes orders mock meat, do NOT order the reuben!

All the food here is good -- soups, breads and so on -- but breakfast is my favorite. Lots of tasty baked goods. The atmosphere is laid-back, so it's a good overall experience.
