Six of us ate (or fed) here on 29 Jan. Four of us have extensive experience with Italian food, from cheap eateries to fine dining. This would rate quite low - in about the 10th percentile. Not that it wasn't edible or that it tasted outright bad; rather, the only distinguishing feature about this place is the inexplicably enormous portions for the entrees, prices of which were very low ($12.25 for the three or four serving largest entree). I suppose the idea is that people who have simply never had a good marinara or pomodoro sauce and who, having spent little, want leftovers for the next few days, will come here and like it. That's fine; there should restaurants for such people. Some specifics about the food: The ubiquitous fried calamari, which was surprisingly not defiled by the tomato sauce, while edible, was one of the worst versions of it we've had - tough with an oddly-tasting batter. The mozzarella sticks consisted of tasteless cheese and alleged bread which had taken on the consistency of the cheese itself, accompanied of course by the multipurpose tomato sauce. The house Chianti was rose-colored water. The salad which came with the entree was fine, as was the waitress. It's hard to argue against large portions, but quantity does not equal quality. That tomato sauce is inferior to virtually any jarred or canned version found in grocery stores. One does not have to spend big bucks at a place such as I Nonni to eat good Italian. There are many, many better options than Yarousso. Tell yourself to spend a very few dollars more for far better pasta, and eat something else for leftovers. Oh yes, the bread offered when people are seated: The worst I've ever had at an either a real or faux Italian restaurant. It had the texture and taste of Wonder Bread. A disgrace.

Pros: Plenty for leftovers and justifiably low prices

Cons: All-purpose mediocre sauce

Because this resturant is family owned, and is part of the neighborhood cutlure there is one thing they do well. They know their guests, and they make them feel special. Maybe they make them something special and give it to them for free or maybe they sit down and swap stories. This is what they do well. Outside of that, I would not suggest this place.

The sauce is not that good, the people that crave it usually are lower class people or they have been eating there since childhood. Sometimes both. I get the impresion that the people that love this place have probably never travelled outside the midwest and think the Olive Garden is fine dining Italian. If you don't even like Olive Garden, you will hate this place. The atmospheres is tacky, the uniorms of the servers outdated, and the food is cheap and not that good. Some items on the menu are downright scary like the chicken. The kitchen and prep areas are not very clean and updated(I have been downstrairs) so that along makes me a little leary of some of the items.

It you want a cheap adventure to the East SIde of St.Paul, this would be a cheap recession adventure. Just don't order the chicken.

Checked out Yarusso's for the spaghetti and meatball special on a Sunday night. We had a friend in from out of town and gave him the option. He chose this over another place (I like the other one better). I was extremely disappointed! It must be me. Everyone was lapping the sauce up with the bread. I think they['ve got a wierd tasting sauce. It's something I'm not crazy about. The service was friendly and good, but I was very shocked by the sauce - the sauce is on everything of course - and it was too late to change my order. Thanks but no thanks.

The people who wrote poor reviews of Yarusso Bros would probably be happier at The Olive Garden. And, it turns out, that's probably where they belong. Try the Da go sandwich sloppy with cheese, you won't regret it.

Yarusso Brothers makes lasagna that beats Cossetta's. It's kind of a fast-food style, homoginized-texture lasagna product in the kids-food style, but I couldn't ask for more. The taste is truly fantastic. And it's fitting that the guilty treat is available "to go," since you'll want to escape their... well, "earthy" wait-staff with all possible speed.

Stopped in for lunch with a friend. We were seated promptly. We had our food in less than five minutes. How is that for a quick lunch. We both at the salad and spaghetti. The salad was basic, which I enjoyed. The food was good. Nice Italian boy waiter. We were in and out in less than 30 minutes.

Been there done that. Wow how can Italtian food taste so cruddy? I tell ya!! First be sure to use the cheapest food product available, then make the most bland suace, some really crappy atmosphere and VOILA!! there you have it some of the worst tasting Italian food in the worst ambience known to man.

This place is about as authentic as you can get. Everything is homemade and the sauce is a family secret - it's the best and has a lot of flavour. Great for families - it's cheap and the portions are huge. Giant mixed drinks!

A great gem with a friendly local atmosphere! It's everything that Buca wishes they could be - real sauce, real people and a real value!

There are three good things about this restaurant and only three: the staff are sweet, the tiramisu is fabulous, and the small space is atmospheric, though they do lay on the old Italian thing a little thick (they play "Godfather" non-stop on the TV for instance). The remainder is awful, truly disgusting. Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES eat the chicken: it had a short unhappy life and suffered an ignominious end in a nauseating red sauce used for everything. For pity's sake, if you are going to use one sauce, work on it until it is decent! Ravioli was hopeless in a store-bought white gravy. salad pathetic (and how can you mess this up?) and garlic toast a mistake. Chocolate cake best forgotten. Better to stay home.

I have personally have known the Yarusso Bothers for 22 years and I cant believe they are still doing the business. They dont take pride in there food. Its not the same as Mr. Yarusso and
Grandpa Yarusso use to make.
It very small and crowded. There are a lot better places now days that could compet food and
ambience.

My boyfriend took me to Yarusso Brothers on our first date almost two years ago. His mother and father used to go there back in the their dating days . The resturant was quant and cozy. The food is indredible. We've been back several time since. We always order the meatballs as a meal, which are fantastic. I've bragged to several people about Yarusso's ever since my first time there. We recently ordered 2 dozen meatballs for a party and Yarusso's was very prompt with their catering. We were supposed to pick them up late in the day, but something came up and we had to pick them up early in the morning. They were very considerate and helpful. All their food is great!! Try it. You won't be disappointed. You'll be bragging about it also!!

I have gone to Yarusso Bros. ever since I was four years old. My parents went there as kids..and so did my grandparents! They have the best spaghetti sauce that you will ever taste. I do not like any other spaghetti sauces since I have had theirs. The restaurant is old fashioned and the people working there are very friendly. One even knows my entire family by name. I would choose this restaurant over any other. I love it!!!!!! And you get the food really fast. And it is not expensive at all!

This place is great. It's one of those places that you will actually "crave" their food after trying it. The red sauce is incredible. I have tried and tried to copy it...no luck. I even talked to the main cook at a festival last year and he didn't even know what Mike's (Yarusso) secret was to the unique tasting sauce! It's an awesome little restaurant...10 for sure.

People in the area have been accustomed to that style of Italian which tastes like the same sauce is used on everything. Because it is a neighborhood, friendly place it tends to get the same diners. It's okay if you're close to it and hungry.

I love this quaint Italian spot with such history in St. Paul. I always hate to give places like this such a high rating because I don't want it to be so packed, I can't get in. I visit Yarusso's every couple of weeks, and I love the food and prices!

This Italian is cheap for a reason, the food isn't that good. I went here because it was rated so high by Citysearch. The sauce is unusual, and not a good unusual. The service was very good, but the food is bringing my overall score way down. I don't understand why this is in the voting for Best Italian when there are so many other good options out there.

I love small family owned places, BUT NOT THIS ONE!
We had the "pasta supreme" with the red sauce.
It was so bland! I wonder if they have ever heard of fresh garlic, basil or oregano. The garlic cheese bread was dry and tasteless. Meatballs,.... ditto.
Chef boy Ardee would have been better!
Sorry, No thanks.

This is a no-frills place to eat. Usually busy at lunchtime and Friday and Saturday nights. However, it's woth the wait. I've been dining there for over 20 years and have never had a bad experience.

One thing that the other raters didn't mention is the great value. You get huge portions at prices that are extremely reasonable.

I love the cozy feeling, as well as the fact that it seems to be such a well-kept secret. The food is great and I always take home leftovers. That's saying something because I almost never take home leftovers.

As said before, make sure you get a meatball or two. They're spectacular
