great place for sushi

by April P. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 2,817

Sekisui has great sushi, as well as other dishes for customers that do not want sushi. The service is good, but a little on the slow side. If you are on a schedule and have limited time, this is not the place to go. If you have time, it is a great place to eat.

Best Sushi!

by Jaime Y. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 889

This is such a great place. Very small and cozy. The staff are fabulous and cater to every need. The servers really know the menu well and can answer any questions about items if you are new to the sushi experience. Our server was very attentive and came by several times to check on us and refill our drinks. They have alcoholic beverages available. The sushi chefs are very nice and give you little tastes of everything to try for no charge! The prices are amazing and the food is amazing. Highly highly recommend.

Not the one.......

by uwantrod2

This is not the best in town. Very bland tasting, and if it smells like fish, don't eat there...it smelled like fish !!!

Pros: Good Location

Cons: Not much flare....

boring menu

by slabhart

Very unimaginative rolls, and very 'americanized' sushi. Lots of cream cheese and eel in the rolls and just a boring menu for a sushi place. This def. cant be the best in town.

incredibly slow service

by hateku

My wife and I had dinner at Sekisui on Grand last night. I've been there before and been impressed, no so much this time. The service was incredibly slow, it too over 20 minutes to take our order and another hour to serve only part of the sushi order. Our order of edamame took forever, the sushi even longer. There were people that came in after us that were served a long time before we were. The table next to us received the wrong order. The dining room itself was fairly dirty and there was a table near us that was not cleared and cleaned for a long time. They appeared to be severely understaffed and had a help wanted sign in the window. I hope they get help soon. Once the sushi arrived, it was good. The rice was not quite sticky enough to stay together in a couple of pieces. There are plenty of sushi places to go in St. Louis instead next time I'm hungry for some unagi!

Favorite Sushi Restaurant in St. Louis

by ekjagne

The food is so good, the sushi is AMAZING, and so is the cheesecake tempura. The atmosphere is very cool, relaxing. Staff is very professional and knowledgeable. I go there fairly regularly. None of the other sushi restaurants in St. Louis or the surrounding area that I have gone to have been comparable. I have never had trouble with parking in the rear, there is lighting and its a fairly busy street. Try this restaurant, especially for dinner.

Pros: Sushi, Staff, Atmosphere

Cons: Some wait on food

Top Tier

by chirochef

I have been many times for lunch, and never for dinner. When kickin' on all gears, no one in St. Louis beats SekiSui for sushi, right up there with Nobu's and Yoshi's. The rice is spot on, the fish fresh, selection great for the area, etc. Kenji is one of the most knowledgeable Japanese chefs in St. Louis - pick his brain if the circumstances are right. Sekisui is one of the few places around still giving oshiboris (dampened napkins) too, even if disposable. Some people have complained that their cars were vandalized in the back parking lot at night, although this is hardly a bad neighborhood and they appear to be isolated instances. Prices are average for the area.

Pros: Rice great, Great selection, Details

Cons: Parking

Best Japanese!!

by Candy

I am Japanese and I know this is good food even for Japanese standard.
Very cool atomosphere with wonderful food. Some restaurants serve so-so food, or weird Japanese (?) dish which obviously I can do better, but at Sekisui, they serve food which worth paying for.

Kenji is the Man

by mikeg38

Every time Kenji Nemoto is involved with a sushi bar it becomes the best in town (Sorry Nobu). The longtime St.Louis sushi chef who was trained in Japan and Hawaii is the owner/manager of Sekisui. The menu selection is by far the best in town and the off menu specials are superb. I love sushi and have sought it out in every major city where I travel and I have found no better prepared sushi than at Sekisui. Nobody in St.Louis knows as much about the cuisine and its history than Kenji.

Pros: Great Food, Great Sake Selection, Authentic
