I have had several buffet dinners at Zeno's over the years for retirement parties, weddings, etc. We eat there every Thanksgiving as a family. The last one was in July 2011. The food was great and on time. The service was as good as ever. They say it is going to be sold but while it is still here I plan on using it every chance I get. I will be having my granddaughters wedding reception and dinner there next month. I hope whomever buys it will give the same service and quality that Zeno's has always provided.

Do not make reservations at Zeno's! It is being sold and is going badly downhill! Knowing that my family would be celebrating 4 very special occasions in Rolla, MO. this weekend, I - 6 months in advance - made reservations for 18 people (from multiple states), 9 rooms for up to 3 nights, and booked 2 private rooms for parties on both Saturday and Sunday. I made multiple phone calls and sent fax's over the months to perfect our plans, and even made a special trip in to inspect the rooms. Over the past 4 years while my son attended college in Rolla, we had many delightful meals at Zeno's (although we never stayed in the motel.) The food was excellent, the service great, the ambience quiet, quaint, the lighting dim. I was looking forward to a happy weekend. When we checked into Zeno's Saturday, we were told that the party plans for that day would go as planned, but they could not honor our plans for Sunday - even though I showed them a copy of the fax confirmation dated only 3 days prior. When I became upset, I was told by the manager that I was a rude person, and he was never told of any of my plans for the weekend! Our out-of-state guests had already checked in Friday night, and my son was graduating in an hour - what could we do? We proceeded with the party on Saturday. It was scheduled for 1:30. No waitress arrived until 2:15, and only because I went to get her. My brother brought a can of beer into our private party room from his room, and drank it. The waitress still did not arrive, so he went to his room to get another one. An employee stopped us and told us that we were breaking the law. We did not know. We took the beer back to the room. Later, the manager accused me of being "cheap and trying to save a few bucks" by bringing our own beer into the room! I had initially planned for a buffet, so that everything would be ready when we arrived, but I was encouraged to order off the luncheon menu as "the selection is great and the prices are reasonable." Later, the manager accused us of changing our plans at the last minute. We did not get out of the room until 3 hours later, just in time for our next event. The manager was also upset that we did not have exactly 18 people as planned, even though we explained that Grandma had a heart attack and 2 guests were still stuck in traffic, en route from PA. When our other guests did arrive and went to the restaurant for dinner, multiple items on the menu were no longer available. On Sunday, Mother's Day, we were forced to find another hotel/restaurant where we could have a party for 20 people. There was nothing nice available in Rolla. We had to check out, pack everyone up, and drive 100 miles to St. Louis. We had had flower and balloon arrangements, 2 big, expensive cakes that we had brought to Zenos, and other decorations for both parties that we also had to transport. When we went to pick them up, the balloon arrangements were all knotted together, several flowers were broke, parts of the decorations were missing, and the cake for Sunday's party was smashed. The manager did not care about us at all. Also, the rooms were clean, but shabby, and the water was grey and smelled strange. The INDOOR pool was filled with gravel! It was only after I arrived back home that I searched the internet and found out that Zeno's is being sold. No wonder that they did not care about us.

I have been making a point of staying in Zeno's, a non-chain, family motel in Rolla, for over 20 years. I have been a loyal patron, and have worked at being so - even when I started bringing my own light bulbs because the lighting is too dim. I will not stay there again, and I feel so strongly that I want to write a review.

When I made my reservation, I asked for a room in the back building, because the rooms in the front building are arranged so that when I go out to get ice, I am mingling with restaurant guests, and I feel like I need to dress nicely in order to get ice. So, I asked for the back building.

My complaints:
1) I was a woman traveling alone, and even though I had asked for the back building, I had NOT asked for the back of the back building. When I arrived and got my key, the clerk could -and should- have alerted me to the fact that I would be the only guest staying on the back of the back building, with no one to take note if trouble occurred back there. That inattention jeopardized my safety.
2) When I got up very early the next morning, and went out to my car, I discovered that the parking lot lights and the lights on the building had all been turned off. There was no security lighting at all out there. Again, Zeno's jeopardized my safety.
3) While Zeno's offers wireless Internet access, the clerk did not bother to tell me that the signal would not carry to where I was staying. No wireless access; no clerk courtesy.
4) The bathtub drain took a full 10 minutes to drain the 2 inches of water that I'd run before I realized that the stopper was engaged.
5) On the other hand, that gave me the "opportunity" to see that the water in the tub was an odd, but very distinct gray color.
6) When I'd finally drained the water and ran water again, a large black clump of something came out of the faucet. Disgusting.
7) The ice machine in the back building was not functioning, which required that I trek a fair distance up the hill to the main building to get ice.
8) The lighting in the rooms is dim, and has been for years. Bring your own light bulb if you want to read.

I've done my best to patronize this family establishment, but when they jeopardize my safety and health (plumbing), I'll go somewhere else.

For a special occasion, we decided to go to Zeno's steak house. The steak that I had that night was pretty delicious. Have not frequented this restaurant on a regular basis strictly due to cost.
