Pushy Sales. I explained that window replacement was something we would do the following year. Salesman took up 2+ hours pitching the windows and aggressively tried to get us to replace one single window now, so we could lock in the price for all for two years.

I had to say no a half dozen times to get them out of my home. The salesman was all packed up and headed out, but then he calls his office and got the okay to drop the price further.

Classic pushy sales techniques. They try and create a sense of urgency. They play to the fact that most people don't like confrontation and have a difficult time saying no, especially repeatedly.

Maybe they have a good product, but I'll never know. Very unappealing sales pitch.

We asked for a quote on a very small amount of fence, only after first researching the average cost of vinyl fence. The saleman from Thomas was very friendly but we had to keep from laughing out loud when we were quoted DOUBLE what we were expecting to hear. We politely told him we were not interested, but he continued to stay for almost 2 hours (we had a newborn, and I seriously had to excuse myself to breastfeed). The next day we received a phone call about the pricing "mistake" and were quoted the "cost" price of the fence.......they said that Thomas would make NO money, but just doing the work for advertisement (which I do NOT believe).....but oddly this was the close to the original price we were expecting. We found out later that our neighber paid the original high price they were asking for. Although, the fence is very good quality and looks nice. Since install I have received about 2 calls/month with more sales pitched.......give it a rest please!!

The differences between Thomas Construction and Contractor "X" , who I ultimately went with on my bathroom remodel are:

Thomas Contruction:
1. Spent 5-10 mins max in the bathroom and the rest of the time at my dining room table doing a hard sell
2. Took no measurements
3. Spent 3+ hours selling me on how great the company was -- walked me through an entire binder page by page about the company and finally talked about the bathroom for maybe the last hour, along with horror stories about other contractors.
4. No details given regarding the estimate. Just wrote the total cost in large numbers on a blank paper and then proceeded to drop the estimate a total of $3,000 within 5 minutes. Of course, to get that price, I had to sign now or it would go back up $2,000 over night. It was like dealing with a used car salesman.

Contractor X :
1. Total meeting lasted no more than 45 mns and contractor spent the enitre time in the bathroom. He took measurements, drew a picture of the layout, and made notes.
2. Told me he'd work up an estimate with a couple options and get back to me in a few days.
3. Sent me the estimate which was fully detailed on what would be done and products used. The estimate was $1,300 LESS than Thomas' sign-now-or-else offer, plus I would get better products (cultured marble vs acrylic). Contractor X saw problems Thomas did not, such as light switch would be inside of shower and needed to be moved. In addition, Contractor X would be doing more work such as moving light switch, removing old tile; whereas Thomas was putting acrylic walls over the old tile, and still Contractor X estimate was lower.

Under pressure, I am embarrassed to admit that I signed with Thomas Construction that first night and gave a deposit, but regretted it as soon as he left. The next day I signed the "Right to Cancel" which you can execute within 3 days to cancel the contract and I faxed it to them. I checked my bank and they had already cashed the deposit check (must have been at the bank when the doors opened!) Right to Cancel stated I would have my deposit returned within 20 days and guess what, still trying to get the deposit money returned to me. Contractor X said they do not even cancel the deposit check until the 3 days Right to Cancel expires.

Last, but not least, I had called Thomas Construction to come to my home in response to a promotion that they would give me $50 just to come in and give me a free estimate. Well, big surprise, I never got the promotional $50 either!

Don't fall for this scam. It's not worth 3 hours of your life listening to their rhetoric -- no matter what they offer! If they were a business that had a quality product that they truly believed in, they could sell the work without using promotional enticements, pressure sales pitches, and horror stories about competitors.

The roofers replaced my roof with six tab shingles of materials able to stand up to a 50 year guaranty.

The roofers were on time, polite, professional, and the quality was spot-on. Clean up was thorough. The price was totally worth the product and the premium guaranty.

I had an opening cut into my kitchen and had installed a triple panes glass, six foot sliding door. Throughout the whole process Thomas Construction was professional and provided excellent services. The sales person was very helpful and educated. He made me feel comfortable with the decision I was making. The door was installed on time and the installers did an excellent job. Recently, I had a problem on the screen lock and Thomas Construction came out immediately and repaired it. They are an amazing company and I would recommend them to anyone!

I really wish I did not even have to give 1 star to this place. We were sought out by them when we were having our windows replaced. We got a quote from them and after a few other quotes decided to have them do it. We put a clause in the contract that said that we would only continue with the project after we 100% agreed on the financing they got for us. Well it turns out the only financing was going to be a 20 year loan (a mortage) that would end up making 20,000 dollar windows cost over 60,000 dollars. Of course, we did not agree with those numbers. They threatened legal action because we would not do the project. Then they went on to say that I could do a smaller project for 1/4 of the cost of the initial project without them taking legal action even though it clearly stated if we did not agree with the financing, the deal was off. I had to call my father and his law office in and only then did they back off. Not a company that sticks to their word and not a company that I would recommend to anyone. AWFUL COMPANY. AWFUL PEOPLE.

My job was actually replacement of Soffit/Fascia and gutter/downspout. I had an appointment for an estimate on Siding, but the salesman pointed out that my siding was OK; it was the inferior soffit/fascia product which was giving me headaches. Birds and squirrels were driving me crazy because they were able to get in and nest (read: make huge messes!) under the eaves and I was worried about the squirrels' ability to get into my house and/or damage the multiple cables running into the house in those areas.

The old soffitt/fascia and gutter/downspout were removed and replaced by superior products. The job looks great, neat and the seals are all tight enough to repel all wildlife.

With the recent completion of this latest Thomas Construction project??soffit/fascia/gutter??I now feel as if I have a ??Thomas? house. I have Thomas custom (stained glass) windows, exterior door, bathroom, and roof to go with the new soffit/fascia/gutter. Even though I'm obviously a repeat customer, with all of those jobs, I had lower-cost estimates from other companies. Why did I choose Thomas Construction? I chose Thomas Construction because I don??t mind paying more for a superior product and superior customer service.
? My custom windows are gorgeous and have stood the test of time.
? Thomas Construction replaced my exterior door twice because of minor scratches on the product when it arrived from the manufacturer.
? My bathroom upgrade is beautiful ?? I selected the products and Thomas Construction took care of the permits, demolition, installation and haul away.
? I??ve had no problems since the installation of a Thomas Construction roof 3 years ago.

This is the type of security I pay for and appreciate from Thomas Construction. I also appreciate that Thomas Construction salesmen don??t oversell or make wild promises. The Thomas Construction warranties speak for themselves. Since the company stands behind its products and services, I don't even mind having the sign in my yard!

The advertising adage of customer satisfaction guaranteed is absolutely applicable in regards to my purchase and installation of Thomas Construction tilt-in replacement windows. From the start of the process with the sales representative to the very end with the follow-up after the installation, I have been treated with professional dignity and up most respect, as if I was their most important client. I am completely satisfied with everything and would proudly recommend their services to any of my associates needing windows.

My wife and I have trusted Thomas with two home projects and couldn't be more pleased with results. The sale associates and installation crews were genuinely friendly, knowledgeable and thorough. We constantly receive compliments from friends and neighbors about the home improvement projects Thomas has helped us with. We will gladly work with them in the future for the quality and peace of mind of a job well done.

The four representatives taht installed winodws at my house were polite, curtious, and highly professional.

Their workmanship is very high quality; excellent in fact.

Thomas Construction should not only be commended on the quality of the windows, but also the high work standards their staff process both office and work site personnel.

The next project that I have, Thomas Construction will be the first I call!

After years of living with construction grade windows- we decided to replace them.
Winter meant I had to close blinds and curtains to help keep the cold air out and try to keep the heat in!
Our new windows are great! I no longer feel cold when I walk up to my windows and can keep my curtains open and let the sunshine in.
Our only regret is that we didn't replace the windows sooner.

I had my bathtub relined in 2009 by Thomas. The first tub was cracked and they had to replace it. Their 2 day job turned into 6 months. The tub was not completed properly and I refused to pay the entire amount owed unless they made repairs. Darrell refused and repeatedly stated "I don't see a problem with the tub". The wall liner was not adhering to the wall and he stated that was normal also.

I just discovered the tub is cracked. The gasket in the drain was dry rotted and water was leaking into the basement. The caulk on the tub is YELLOW and there are large gaps at the top of the wall liner. HONESTLY, I could have done a better job myself. I would suggest you be extremely cautious in dealing with this company.

I trusted I would receive quality work but that was far from the truth. My son worked for them in the past and when I contacted the local news Thomas told them I was simply doing this because they fired my son. My son was NEVER fired. I guess that is there way of not addressing the sloppy work they did in my home.

I also had them put gutters and down spouts on my home. The down spouts were not anchored for nearly six months. I discovere that when I returned from Afghanistan. They did promptly anchor them.

BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!

We had five new windows installed in our 1847 farmhouse. It is amazing how much less drafty our home has become. The Thomas Construction team delivered everything they promised and more! Especially our salesman, Jeff Harmeling. He called to check on our progress and our satisfaction. It is not very often in today??s market place that you find a company going ??above and beyond? to not only satisfy but impress their customers. Thomas Construction certainly did impress us.

We recently had all of our windows replace by Thomas Construction. Just like some earlier reviews we did feel pressured and somewhat uncomfortable by the sales pitch. Very aggressive approach. The huge price and then the subsequent phone calls to lower the price. We did finally settle on a payment plan that seemed reasonable. The windows are outstanding and installation was very professional. I dont believe you can find a better product on the market.
Later when we found out some things that we were not satisfied with we got in touch with the company. Thomas Construction Company made everything right. They stand behind their product and professionalism 100%. Their service is unbeatable in my opinion. We love our home even more now thanks to Thomas Construction. :)

We pride ourselves in great customer service! Glad we could help you! Enjoy your new windows.

We bought a house, rehabbed it ourselves, but needed new windows--in my opinion, not a do-it-yourself job. So I started the research, called a few companies and scheduled some appointments. I had never heard of Thomas, but a mail coupon promised a $50 check just to have them in for a 1-hour appointment and give you an estimate. So I scheduled one for the next day. The guy scheduling on the phone took down what I wanted, then put his manager on the phone to confirm it. The time for the appt they gave was "12 or 12:30." I asked them could we specify it to 12, and the guy told me, ??We leave a little wiggle room for traffic (in the middle of the day?). So the next day my wife and I had lunch, waited till 1p, and when no one showed or called, I called the 800 number, and a woman said I was scheduled for 5:30p. She apologized, and said someone would be out at 3p. A well-dressed guy named Scott showed up promptly at 3p, started the presentation. In comparison with two other in-home appointments with other companies, Scott from Thomas did a good job, and the window product featured was extremely impressive. Then we got to price. For the products and how I perceive their value, the prices seemed reasonable enough if you want to invest in very nice windows. We had 13 windows to potentially replace, and the ??retail? number of ~$14,500 was reduced to ~$13K, which was a 30-day offer. Then he brought it down to ~$10K if I ordered today. Of course, finance options were presented, but I had not intended on making a buying decision that day. I told him not today, and he said he could ??call his boss? and try to save even more. He asked to use my phone (why?), and sat at our table ??talking to his boss,? the owner Steve Townzen. I am using quotes b/c I am not convinced he was talking to a real person. His conversation was fairly one-sided, and all the sentences were basically repeating the sales pitch for the benefit of my wife and I hearing it again. He got off the phone and said if we put a sign in our yard for 60 days, he could drop the price down to ~$9,200. Not bad, and very tempting; he said this would basically be a ??no-profit? job, just so they could keep their installers from finding work elsewhere in the slow winter time. I told him that I hate to tell him no, b/c it seems like a good product and price, but said that I was still researching what we wanted, and would not decide today. He did his best to close the sale, and did so respectfully; I felt bad because I was really impressed with their product. This is a long story, and we didn??t even buy from them, so if you are having a Thomas pitch, just know this: their window products are priced at the high end of the market, and seem justified. You will be in for a hard sale, that is, they will keep bringing down the price in order to get you to buy that day, and they will ask you several times for the order. This is an effective sales technique, although it does cause a bit of discomfort. I am not saying do or don??t buy or go with Thomas for your project, but know that there are other options that at the very least, are less expensive, and are not as high pressure. This was a few days ago, and we will be making decisions soon. If money was not an issue for my situation, I would buy these windows without a second thought. Oh, and I checked on the $50 promotion, they said a check would be mailed in 6-8 weeks. Fingers are crossed.

Joe, We apologize for any misunderstanding or confusion regarding your appointment time. We sincerely appreciate the thought and consideration that went into your post. Our energy-saving windows are, indeed, of very high quality which is why they are priced higher than other products on the market. Our Thomas representatives strive to present our products in a detailed manner so our potential customers can be well informed about what we have to offer. By making a phone call to Mr. Townzen, our representative hoped to present you with a more reasonable quote that still reflected our product??s superiority. As for the promised gift card, the expected delivery time is, as you mentioned, 6-8 weeks. Again, we thank you for the thoughtful posting and if you have any further questions I would be happy to answer them for you. You may contact me via e-mail at aboehm@tvithomas.com or by phone at (314) 291-0200 ext. 310. Best regards, Alex Boehm

Thomas Construction is very good in their work. We have had our roof done and they did a great job and it really made my house look so much better that I also had a new entry door done. The salesman was very polite and they were always on time and very professional. They did a good job and were very neat and cleaned up everything. I would recommend them to all of my friends and family.

I had a door-to-door young sales rep come knocking on a night when it was pretty cold outside. I wasn't in the immediate need for a product, but had long considered a side door upgrade. As a courtesy to his hard work, I agreed to a sales visit. Like others, I thought the commitment of an hour of time was excessive; along with the requirement of my spouse being present; but I agreed to a 7:30 appointment on a week night.

When the very friendly and cordial sales rep arrived, (at 8:10pm) we advised him that we were only looking for a quote at this time, and that due to uncertain job futures, could not make a commitment in the foreseeable future. I additionally advised him that I was a repeat Thomas customer, and didn't need the "re-sell" on the company as my last experience was very positive. He indicated the process would therefore go quickly, which was quite welcomed.

We were only interested in replacing the side door of our home with the potential of a storm door. We were expecting the quote to be in the range of $1500-$2000. What we weren't expecting was being forced to go through a lesson on sales. We tried very politely to have him abandon the approach without success. About the time the sales lesson concluded, the lesson on why people do and do not make decisions began. The sales approach is one I would expect if I were buying a time share, it just wasn't a lecture I was willing to intellectually invest for a single door.

The meeting, unfortunately, ended abruptly when we realized it was 9:20 and there was no apparent end in sight for the sales attack. Combined with the bid amount of 3x our expectations, the takeaway from the experience left us feeling violated.

I'm sure there are applicable opportunities, and successful opportunities for using this business approach. You wouldn't be in business if it wasn't successful. However, as construction workers, you should well know that you can't build everything with just a hammer. Mature customers do not want to be forced to listen to that kind of aggressive and insulting sales language - ESPECIALLY in their own home.

Had the quote even been reasonable - the experience left us so upset, there's no way we'll even return a phone call. The real downside to that is - Thomas does incredible work. I can't help believing that if you believed more in your company, you wouldn't need such a ridiculous sales approach.

Thomas construction was a pleasure to work with and the installers of my windows were delightful......two brothers. The salesmen were great as well.

I do feel that the card I filled out at the movie theatre was a scam just to get a phone number. I would also like more info on my windows........are the screens removeable and replaceable?

I will not hesitate to call Thomas next time a job needs to be done. they are higher than most but, again...I love my windows and feel I got what I paid for.

Ms. Rogers, Thank you for your positive remarks. If you visit our website under the sweepstakes section, there are testimonials from previous winners of our sweepstakes (all very happy with their results). On our blog, we also have entries written about previous winners and projects they have had completed after winning (with photos of the beginning and end results). As for your windows, the screens are in fact removable and replaceable. If you need any more information on your new windows please feel free to contact your salesman or me at (314) 739-1111 ext. 310 or by e-mail at aboehm@tvithomas.com. I have utilized the services of Thomas Construction for various improvement programs for my residence. These services have included new windows, the addition of a deck as a replacement for a patio and a gutter guard. The selection and the planning for the services has always involved the use of a knowledgeable representative that has provided me with the desired result.

The installation was professionally done in a timely manner. The workers took great pride in their workmanship and went beyond my expectations in their attention to detail.

If Oprah had a contest in 2010 for the World??s Ugliest Shower, my downstairs shower would have won ??hands down.? No one and I mean no one, wanted to shower in it. That??s where Thomas Construction came to the rescue and with creativity and skill created a shower that my house guests now wait in line to use. Thank you, Thomas, for involving me in every aspect of my shower??s creation. It was so refreshing to have a company live up to its motto of putting the customer and their satisfaction first and foremost.

I??ve had windows, doors, a kitchen counter/sink, gutter guards and bathroom sinks and vanities all done in 2010 because Thomas??s work and employees were so impressive. Thank you for a wonderful year from both me and my house

I requested an estimate for replacement windows (which took every other company all of 15 minutes) but received a 2 1/2-hour, aggressive sales pitch instead. When I scheduled the appointment, they informed me it may take an hour. That seemed odd, but I agreed. After 2 1/2 hours of sales gimmicks, I was ready to swallow a bottle of pills just to make it end. To his credit, the salesman was friendly, but I tire of anyone trying to sell me something for 2+ hours. And while he made a convincing argument for the quality of the windows, the cost was quadruple that of the average bid I received. Better windows? Maybe. Four times better? Absolutely not. The salesman eventually halved the original estimate. The fact that they tried to mark them up 100% beyond what they could actually install them for only irritated me more. And when I told him I could not make a decision one way or another without first receiving a couple more bids, he just started reiterating all the drivel he'd already covered (annoying). If money is not an object, it may be worth your time to consider Thomas. Just be warned: you're in for a long, aggressive sales pitch. Most consumers should probably just steer clear.

Peter, We apologize for your negative experience. Our Thomas salesmen have an informative presentation that they take to market with them each time. The same presentation is given to every individual. We believe it is imperative to learn about our products and their benefits before a purchase is made, which is why an in-depth, helpful explanation is given. Other windows in the St. Louis area range from extremely low-priced to considerably more expensive than the window we carry. It is extremely important to Thomas Construction that the variation in the products is explained to each consumer. If you would like to speak more about your issue, you may contact me by e-mail at aboehm@tvithomas.com or by telephone at (314) 291-0200 ext. 310. Thank you, Alex Boehm

I had these guys out for a free "no obligation" quote on my roof. After trying to suck up for about 20 minutes the salesman said he was going to grab the samples and some measurements and come inside and he'd be gone in an hour. He began with the bragging of the company and how they do 20 million in sales (figured out how later) and blah blah blah. Finally went into the product and how it was so great. Gave me an initial quote of $17000 for a 15 square roof. Then said I could get an initial visit discount dropping it to $15000. I explained I could not sign a contract without taking a close look at the budget and finding what a normal cost would be. I wasn't sure what the materials would cost, but $15000 sounded pretty high to me. After sitting around answering a couple questions he said they only charge 40% labor. I told him I still couldn't commit to it yet and would have to look later. He said there forever very unwelcomed and after a long pause said if I was willing to put a 4x8 sign in my yard they could give me another discount. I would be alright with it if I decided to go with them and the price went from $15000 to $7000. He said they can afford to do this because they make a large profit from the signs so they can afford to not make as much off from a single job. This is complete bogus because they would be losing money if they only charge 40% labor and can drop the price by over 50%! I got onto lowes after he left and I can buy all the materials myself for under $1500. Thats $5500 in labor at their best price and I'm sure they get a huge discount. Anyways, they don't treat it as no obligation as they try to prey on the weak and charge rediculous prices! It's not wonder how they make their $20 mil a year! RIPOFFS

RIPOFFS

Business Response:

Your Thomas Experience Joe, We are very sorry that you were unhappy with your Thomas experience. Our trained salesmen have a process that they take to market and the same process is used for every individual. We firmly believe it is important to learn about our products and their benefits before a purchase is made, which is why an in-depth explanation is given. St. Louis is home to a very competitive window market, with products ranging from extremely low-priced to considerably more expensive than the window we carry. It is important to us that we explain the difference in the products to each person. Thomas Construction keeps records on any presentations given to potential customers. After searching our records, we were not able to find a roofing presentation given to anyone with the name of Joe/Joseph, last name beginning with D, in the last 3-4 months. If you believe that your salesman was not performing his job properly, please contact me (aboehm@tvithomas.com) so we can discuss this further. Thank you. Thank you, Alex Boehm

Thomas Construction Company was my experience with a building contractor and it has spoiled me. From the initial contact with their sales representative thru construction and financing personnel all the people that I worked with for my project were professional, showed that they cared about my project and always delivered what was promised. My project was finished on time, construction personnel made sure that they cleaned up all debris from the construction, they were friendly and explained what they were doing whenever I asked. They cared for my property during construction and the deck has met all the quality standards that were promised. It is a beautiful deck and I know that we will enjoy using it for years.

If I have any future plans that require a building contractor, Thomas Construction will be the first conpany that I contact.

I have had numerous projects done by Thomas Construction Co. and there are several reasons for this. When I do a new project, I need expert advice from a reliable source. I need to kno whow and when it will be completed and if I have to have any modifications to actually improve the project. I feel that the team at Thomas Construction can and will do this.

After the completion of the project and if there is a problem of any kind I can call them and they will work with me to solve that problem in a courteous and amiable way. This can be done through a warranty or just good service.

We have now had all the windows in our home replaced by Thomas Construction, and we love the qualtiy and the look of them! We are also pleased with the quality of the work of the installers and with their neatness and professionalism. They've done a great job and cleaned up perfectly each of the three times they've come. Thomas also stands by its gurante--replacing a window that was broken--our fault, not theirs. We are really satisfied with this company and would recommend them to anyone on this site

My husvand and I felt as if we had moved into a new house after our new windows were installed. Our air quality improved, there was no glare with the sun shone into our famly room, and the whole house was just so quiet! Road noise, barking dogs, and other neighborhood sounds are now barely audible. Our 10-year-old daughter, who is normally up every morning by 7 AM, slept until 9:30 the morning after the installation. I can't wait to see our utility bills!
