I started training at WMAA 18 months ago with my seven year old daughter. It??s been a long time goal of mine to earn a black belt in taekwondo, but life got in the way, delaying my training. Finally, using the excuse of doing an activity with my daughter, who has considerable social anxiety, we began our training and couldn??t be happier. By far, the best thing about this dojang is the people. Between the instructors and the students, you won??t find a better place to train. The traditional curriculum focuses on core areas including: forms, self-defense, sparring movements and board breaking. There is additional emphasis in learning respect and discipline??the two most important aspects of any martial arts training. For students interested in learning beyond the traditional curriculum, there are opportunities for training in sparring, sport poomse, demo team and weapons. For those interested in the sport aspects of taekwondo, Master Winkler, as a former national champion in sparring, is an excellent resource and serves as head coach for the competition team. Mrs. Winkler specializes in poomse and makes sure your forms are perfect and competition ready. For me, the most amazing thing is how the instructors relate to all of their students??young, old, beginner, black belt??they all get the personalized attention they need to succeed.

My family (wife and two daughters) and I joined WMAA almost four years ago and we are extremely happy with our decision. My girls were ages 4 and 6 when we started and now all of us have earned our 1st Degree Black Belts. Other schools we looked at were very militaristic and actually scared my daughters (and this was just during the visit!).

Master Winkler and his staff do an exceptional job of relating to students of all ability levels from young kids to middle age adults and above. They teach discipline and respect and build self confidence in a positive manner and work with students based on their individual capabilities. The teaching styles are a very effective mix of martial arts discipline and respect coupled with humor and student interaction. Classes will challenge you to push your capabilities and improve your fitness, flexibility, and skills.

Additionally, the environment within the dojang is one of a very positive, reinforcing community. There is a very good aura here. Other families and the instructors become your friends and the interpersonal relationship extends beyond just the activities within class.

All in all, this is a great place to be!

Greatest decision we ever made was to enroll our child in this excellent Dojang! She has flourished and become a strong, confident young lady. The instructors are top notch and provide guidance not only in martial arts, but also character, respect, and responsibility.

World Martial Arts Academy in Crestwood is an amazing place that teaches and trains beyond expectations.Yes, it is expensive, but incredibly worth it (and comparatively cheap when considering other educational facilities (e.g. trade schools, private schools)); you can't put a price on life-long skills and training. The dojang became a second home to me, the students & instructors a second family. The Winklers and interns are incredibly generous with their time, offering extra help when needed. I still practice the techniques I learned at the school, and I use respect & discipline and the 5 tenets everyday at school, at work, and in my personal life. I can't continue attending often because I go to college in Columbia, MO, but I still like to visit on breaks and I hope to attend here regularly again someday. I cannot imagine how I would be if I hadn't attended here, but I know that I am a more confident, determined, polite, and happy person because of my experiences here.

When we moved to St Louis 8 years ago my oldest son had to leave an excellent tae kwon do school, so when we started looking here, we knew that we wanted a school that would teach my son the art, but also teach him AND show him respect. We wanted a school that knew and understood that some kids weren't into the competative part of TKD, but we also wanted a school that could let him go the competitive route, if he wanted to. After trying a few (and some REALLY STANK), we found WMAA and Master Winkler and his staff. After a couple of years there with my oldest son, I started also with my younger son, who was 7 at the time. I am not an athletic person, but I felt and feel very comfortable at WMAA. The instructors there make it fun and a good workout. I know that I have improved. I'm pushed, but in a good way. We laugh in almost every class. I love that my sons and I have learned discipline, respect, self control and self defense. This has become a family to us, and we feel a part of that family. The class schedule is flexible and you set your own time line to completion of your goals. There are different classes for different wants and needs. Age range is from 4 years old on up. I like that I compete only with myself - how much can I improve my skills - and I like that I can see the improvement. Great dojong, great instructors, great for families, caring staff. If this is a sport that you want to try - this is a great place to try it! And if you are already into martial arts and want a super instructor to take you to the next level, Master Winkler will do that.

My daughter and I started at World Martial Arts in 2003 and I can not believe it was that long ago!! When we started she was very quiet and shy...you would never guess that now! We have had so many wonderful opportunities there from team training to demo team. The staff and instructors are wonderful and take the time to make sure each child understands and performs at their best. Each student is encouraged to always do their best and the staff does their best to help you attain that. Thank you for every thing over all of the years!

WOW !!!!!!!! I just read all of the reviews I am so sorry for the people that can't/or won't pay for the best training, the best friends, the best atmosphere I have ever been a member of. 15 years ago my wife and myself signed our youngest son to the black black contract,it was so much fun watching that we signed up too. Then the older son came on,And the next 3 plus years were just the best time the 4 of had. The sons are moved on with their own lives now .BUT I /WE STILL TALK TO MASTER WINKLER,STILL STOP IN. AND THE FEES WE PAYED 15 YEARS AGO,COMPARATIVELY (FOR THE 4 OF US) WERE HIGHER THAN NOW, BUT WORTH EVERY PENNY.YOU KNOW WHAT THEY SAY HIND SIGHT IS 20/20 And the friends we made along the way to black belt, we still party with them from time to time.

I went to World Martial Arts Academy as a way for my eldest child who suffered extreme emotional difficulties to gain some self esteem and self confidence, and she absolutly loved it, BUT...my family like sooo many others were affected by the fall of the economy in a major way, we were loosing our home, my husbands buisness had all but stoped and the company I work for had lost a significant amount of buisness,we had to make drastic cuts in our lives just to keep a roof over our heads so of course 150.00 a month for martial arts had to stop, I went to the studio explained the situation and was shown no mercy or empathy for our situation and thats when i realized that the "program" I thought I was signing my kids up for was actually a contract(you could say I was a little nieve)I had no way out so I tried to make the payment but could not, eventually I was sued, and found out that the company World Martial Arts that I thought was sticking it to me was actually the people running the place, they own the studio something that was not disclosed to me when we enrolled, and the couple running the studio has complete power over all things financial, he could have stopped this but didn't, which shows greed and low character, I'm giving this 5 stars because I don't want to put a blemmish on the Martial Arts buisness as a whole, it can be quite theraputic and helpful for many people, in this case if you have the money and never plan to not have it go for it, i'm hurt and deeply upset by this entire situation, i'm saddened by the fact that a place who always seemed to focus on family and honesty would be so cut throat and non careing for it's members.

Business Response:

we worked with this family for months, adjusting their payment schedule and their monthly dues to achieve continued training for their children. in thanks for that they never made a payment under our mutually agreed upon adjusted plan.again some people are just impossible to work with even when we bent over backwards to meet their needs.

In the past ten years it has been my great pleasure to have Mr. William Winkler, Mr. Lee and the rest of the teaching staff of World Martial Arts in Crestwood involved in the physical and emotional development of my youngest son. The eight years have seen him earn his First dan Black Belt, grow into a staff intern and then employee and now pursue his second dan belt. The family atmosphere and genuine concern for the well being of each child expressed by Mr. Winkler has been an extremely important aspect of my son's growth into the wonderful young man that he is.
On a second level, World Martial Arts in Florissant, St. Peters and Crestwood have been a great resource for help in the physical, emotional and attentional growth of several of my patients. Parents have been very pleased by the extremely positive impact that this organization has made on their childrens' lives.
The cost for the return is clearly well worth the price. The skills acquired are life changing.

When I first started at WMAA I really didn't want to sign a three year "Black Belt Club" contract either. It just seemed like too long. However, the longer I thought about it the more I thought; what a great way to teach my son about commitment! The cost for the two of us is $150/month. This is probably the best $150 I spend each month. Another thing to keep in mind is that after 3 years you stop paying, but can continue to attend until you have achieved your Black Belt. My son, who is on the autism spectrum, has learned so much about respect and commitment. He is now able to pay attention and stay (reasonably) still in class. We get good exercise, spend a minimum of 2 evenings per week together, and have made some great friends. I would highly recommend World Martial Arts Academy.

Yes, I too was a little intimidated by the contract they wanted me to sign but it was only for 6 months. They are very good with the children (even the toddlers which we all know is not easy). They consistently reinforce respect and discipline with the children which our society is definitely lacking. Our family is very active in sports and the amount of money they are asking for is not outrageous. I'm very sorry to hear the other peoples complaints about the finance companies but it is not a reflection of the Winklers

Beware of the THREE YEAR CONTRACT AT $95.00 A MONTH -YES A $3,420.00 COMMITMENT - they want you to sign a THREE YEAR CONTRACT at $95.00 a month and to make the deal worst after you sign the contract they sell your $3,420.00 contract to another company a - I was in a accident and was injured 7 months into my contract and I was unable to continue with martial arts but I still have to continue making the $95.00 a month payment to the "loan company" that now owns my contact - due to my injury I will never be able to return to class still I have to pay the $2,755.00 balance to the people they sold my contact to - that is crazy - beware- do not get caught up in the same mess I did - these days you can go to any gym in the St. Louis area and join on a month to month basis for $45.00 a month or less - and most of them have classes and they are open 24/7

Business Response:

some people are tough to work with this student called and told me about the accident. all they have to do is provide a note from their physician to the effect that they cannot take part in class and the account will be closed. this was explained several times.

We sent my son here thru a special they were running. The instructors are great with the kids! My son loved it, but after his month trial was up- then it was down to business. The prices were outrageous! I guess if we lived closer and I could get my 5 yo son to commit to three years - it would have been o.k., but it was too pricey for us.
