I have had some really nice meals in my life time, this is one of the greatest meals I have ever had!! Expensive but well worth it. The staff is really helpful in telling you what things taste like and giving opinions of what to try and what is probably not going to suit your tastes. Try the Rum Pudding with Strawberrries, you won't be disappointed

Thanks to some special circumstances, my wife and I were fortunate to be able to go to Citizen Kane's for a recent dinner. The restuarant is beautiful, situated in a scenic old home in the heart of Kirkwood. We're pretty middle-class and most of our steak experience is of the chain-restaurant variety, but I'd been told years ago that Kane's had the best steak in St. Louis.

That much, at least, is true. The steaks are perfectly cooked, wonderfully marinated, and quite tender. On top of that, they are absolutely enormous -- I ordered the Ribeye and it looked well like it could have been 32 ounces. (It was good for two meals beyond the night at the restaurant.)

The rest of the meal was of variable quality. The salad was excellent, particularly with a Mayfair dressing that was as good as any dressing I can recall having. The appetizer sampler, by contrast, was decent but was indistinguishable from (and in the case of the mushrooms, inferior to) the much cheaper fare available at other locales. The entree sides were okay but, again, unremarkable. My wife got the shrimp pasta but found the white wine and garlic sauce a little too strong on the white wine, which may or may not be a good thing depending on your tastes.

One other note: the service was predictably good but there were a couple of oddities about it that sort of offended our more middle-class sensibilities. One, costs for soda and coffee were not listed; were it not for the other reviews on Citysearch we would not have known they charge for refills. Two, when they took our food away to wrap it up for us, they summarily discarded anything that was not part of the main entree, including bread and potatoes. They even threw away any pieces of steak that I had cut off the main piece but had not eaten. Perhaps that is par for the course for a "fine dining" restaurant, but we've certainly been to other places of comparable cost that sent us home with more.

Overall, Kane's certainly is a nice place to go, especially if you adore steak, but in the end it was hard to justify paying two to three times the cost of a Longhorns or Lone Star for a meal that wasn't twice as good.

Cons: Parts of the meal were mediocre, some service oddities

My wife and I went there for our first wedding anniversary tonight. We decided since this was a special night we would splurge and go for a more upscale steakhouse. Going by what we had heard and reading some reviews on citysearch we made our decision for Citizen Kane's. Our favorite place has been Tucker's for a long time but were made to believe that Kane's was "at a higher level".
We were seated approximately 20 minutes past our reservation time and had to wait (standing) in a very cramped and extremely loud bar area. Once we were seated, in an area that was also noisy, our waiter did a capable job for the most part. My wife had the filet and on the waiter's recommendation I ordered the ribeye. Both were ordered medium but were brought to us to medium-rare at best. Both of us were ready to eat though and didn't want to send them back to have to only wait longer for what we came for. Although undercooked, the filet was still very appealing. The ribeye lacked alot to be desired, though. Even though it was also undercooked, it was somewhat tough. If it had been cooked for much longer, it would have been an unbearable chore to finish. For a $32 steak, the time spent chewing on it should be minimal and this definetely was not.
Also, my wife and I discovered when the bill was brought to us that we had been charged for EVERY refill of soda. Yes, soda. ($2 for each one) Are you kidding me??? Although we didn't ask, I would at least expect the waiter to inform us of this at the time. The drink prices aren't on the main menu, by the way. Had we known, we would have just drank water. For a place that seems to garner such great reviews and at the prices they charge, we honestly expected much more and didn't feel it was worth the extra money. From now on, for the value and food quality we will gladly go to Tucker's.

Pros: Sauteed mushrooms

Cons: Noisy, cramped, charge for refills of soda (I wonder if they do the same for coffee?) Not worth the extra money.

We went to Citizen Kanes for our New Years dinner and what a great way to end a not-so-great year. After reading a review before going that touted the pork chop and its sweet/horseradishy sauce as to die for.... I felt it a must to try. OUTSTANDING!! It was most thickest, juiceist, perfectly cooked pork chop I have ever encountered. I'LL BE BACK!

We go to Kane's at least once a year. The Ribeye is always flawless. It is juicy and full flavored. I love whatever steak seasoning or steakbutter they use - it's spectacular. Great place to pack and artery. The wines are pretty overpriced - around 23.00 for a bottle that would cost about 7.50 in the store. The salads are mediocre as well as the sides and the service is a little above average - however the Ribeye is great!

My wife and I have been dining at Citizen Kane's for many years. I can only comment on two of the choices as we are spoiled by them. The first time dining there we were with a business associate who was taking us for diner and he insisted that we get the pork chop. Generally neither of us would have ordered that, but being guests we did get the pork chop. First of all it is a very thick bone in chop.....and I mean large. Secondly, it came with a sauce (kind of a sweet horseradish apple something) to dip that was to die for! The only other thing we have had was a steak on one occasion (they ran out of pork chops). The steak was wonderful. My son in law said it was the best steak he had every eaten. Many people do not like the mash potatoes and I must admit I always get the bake potatoe and avoid that problem. The house dressing (mayfair) is also outstanding. I am not a wine snob but enjoy a good glass of wine with dinner. One of my friends told me to get the house burgundy.....a house wine????? Well he was right. Nice glass of wine at a good price.......I had two.

Well that seems to sum it up, other than to say we have always had wonderful service.

Hope to see you there soon...............maybe the wife will want to go this Friday!

My boyfriend and I went there for his birthday. It was supposed to be a special night, but I was disappointed in the unprofessional service (the waiter removed a plate saying, "let me get this hot a*s plate off your table"). We weren't offered a wine list and we weren't told the special dish or soup of the day. After reading the reviews about the food, I was hoping for something special but the steaks weren't cooked to order and really were not that incredble. The food wasn't bad, but given the price I was expecting to be wowed and wasn't.

Cons: service, I made reservations and someone else was seated before me, also it was very loud

This would be a great restaurant if a creepy guy named Coy wasn't hanging around there. He stalks girls at the bar.

My family loves steak. We have eaten at some of the nicest restaurants in the St. Louis area and we found our new favorite. Citizen Kane's in Kirkwood is amazing. During our visit on Friday, we all had the filet and salad with mayfair dressing and we're all still talking about it. The filets are around 9-10 ounces and are cooked perfectly. I love mayfair salad dressing and theirs is simply the best. It's a little pricy (about $31 for the 9-10 ounce filet) but well worth it. For 4 of us to have dinner, which included a side AND a salad, and no alcohol, it cost about $150. The service was amazing and also quick. Please stop by and give Citizen Kane's a try.

Cons: Nothing at all

Having eaten at several places in Boston and California, Citizen Kane's ribeye stacks up to be one of the best tasting steaks I've ever had. By far the best priced meal in comparison to other similar steak houses in St Louis. We showed up without reservations but was able to sit in their bar and have the most delighted service.

Dont eat a thing all day if your going to Citizen Kanes for a steak. You will need every bit of your appetite. Salad and side comes with your meal, so go ahead and order the sauteed musrooms for the steaks ala carte, and an extra little side dish. Wine list is small but offers something for everyones pallet and wallet, you can sometimes find a gem ofgf the list if you ask your server. If you like huge filets, monster strips, and rib -eyes that look like the United States on a plate, then heres your Mecca. Save room if you can for the chocolate chip cheesecake, or a Brandy Alexander.

Overall, I was extremely disappointed with my experience. I was expecting better based on reviews. There was a lot of background noise. It took us 25 minutes after we were done before we got our bill. Mashed potatoes were runny. Salad was disappointing (one tomato and one olive). Meat was not cooked as described (rarer). Not many options for wines by the glass. For the money, I was not impressed. One side dish included, but extremely small portion. However, steak was very tasty, huge and had great flavor. Reservation is a must have.

When it comes to steak, we are very serious and have tried all touted as "the best" in the St. Louis area. Kane's wins hands down with a staff that welcomes you as family and maintains impeccable service through the meal. Presentations as mouth-watering as they are, are merely a prelude to the very finest beef in the metro area and sides prepared with the same display of careful arrangements lend themselves to a wonderful dining experience. Not being from the Big (road)Apple, we only have the beef from the midwest to compare, and Kane's, quite simply, offers the very best.

My wife and I dined at Citizen Kanes for the first time last weekend. I found the resturant to be excellent overall. I had the ribeye steak and I would have to say that it was the best steak I have had in a resturant. I only have one complaint and that is that the mashed potatos were too soupy. I prefer mine with a little more body to them. My wife had the medallions and thought they were wonderful. All in all we had a very pleasant dining experience. The waiters were alway's near, but not pushy or in the way. I never had to ask for refills on anything. I would recommend this resturant to anyone who enjoys a great steak!

If we could eat there every single week, we would. Citizen Kane's, by far, has the best steaks in STL...probably the whole midwest. All the food is good...I can never decide which side I want....I particularly love the garlic mashed potatoes and the spinach. The Mayfair salad is excellent. Service too is top notch. The only negative that I can think of is that sometimes it's a little tight in there since it is always crowded and the tables are somewhat close together, but too close. It's something I can overlook because everything else is so good. I recommend a reservation as it is always packed.

The Ribeye was a huge piece of meat and was nicely cooked). However being from NY area I expect a little more. The soup was so salty that it was unedible. This soup really should have been dumped out. After browsing though their limited wine list I ordered a bottle of wine ( $60 + ) and it was brought to me very warm. Much warmer than room temperature and the glassware was cheap. The sides were OK but small. Service was average although they seemed a little pushy for you to order appetizers and deserts ... the steaks are big enough you dont really need more food.

In short the steaks were excellent!!! However I would not recommend this restaurant. I think they need to focus a bit more on details. For a total cost of about $80 / person for just wine and steaks I expect more.

My husband and I just had the best steaks we've ever had. He had the filet, which must've come from Paul Bunyan's ox...it was huge. The side was the red potatoes with onions. I had the medallions with mushroom burgandy sauce...there were two medallions the size of two normal filets. My side was the garlic mashed potatoes. The steaks were succulant. We couldn't even speak. I recommend reservations. We sat at a table in the bar because we didn't have reservations, but they served us like we were royalty. The vinagarette dressing on the salad was fantastic. The service was prompt and professional. Highly recommend for that special dinner.

The first time I went to Citizen Kane's was just before the opera. The staff assured us that we would make the opening curtain and still enjoy a wonderful meal. They were right!! The steaks at Citizen Kane's are the THE BEST in Saint Louis. There isno comparing a chain like Longhorn to Citizen Kane's. They are not even in the same category. You are treated like family and a loved family member at that. I highly recommend Citizen Kane's.

I have had the pleasure of dinning at Citizen Kane's many times with my husband over the last year and a half. It is without a doubt the best there is. There food is one of a kind. I would love to recommend something off of the menu but it would be challenging to list only a few things. Everything there is spectacular! I have it marked below that it is not good for kids because this is a more grown up place but at the same time they were more than willing to prepare something for my 1yr. old last wk.

Absolutely the best steak in town. Generous portions. Friendly staff. Located in a quaint converted house in historic downtown Kirkwood. I have eaten at the best steak houses across the country and I still rate them in the top 5. One taste and you will be convinced too.

Citizen Kane's is a great steakhouse without the pretension of some other steakhouses. My wife and I have eaten there about eight times, and never been disappointed. The steaks and sauces are the best in St. Louis (we can't speak for other entrees, though).

This is a wonderful place. We first went there as a suggestion for use of a wedding gift. We enjoyed it so well that we go back every year for our anniversary, not to mention for other special occassions. We took our daughter there for her High School Graduation. She absolutely loved it. The service is wonderful and the food is fantastic. Now, we give out gift certificates for wedding gifts ourself!
It's a great choice.

This is a great little place but worth the price.

Pros: romantic, great steak

Cons: expensive

Steak houses seem to be in two categories - $16 and $26. Kanes falls in the $26. For about that you can select a strip or filet and get a salad and starch to go with it. The meat is awesome. Cooked to perfection in a generous portion. The staff is attentive but not overbearing and the atmosphere is upbeat. This is the best of the $26 steak places. Others compared to - Dierdorf & Harts, Sams, Andrias, St. Louis Steak (is it still open?) Mike Shannon's.

Truly a wonderful dining experience. Dining within what was formerly a victorian home adds greatly to the ambience. I would highly reccomend any of their steaks or seafood selections.
