BEST PIZZA IN TOWN!!! Great service, nice people, and the food is fantastic. Pizzas are loaded with toppings. BBQ Chicken pizza is the best I have ever tasted. Fred's Philly is like nothing I have had anywhere. Who would think putting gravy on a pizza could work? It does!!

Shelly is one of the cruelest and rudest people I have ever seen. The statements she made about 1 of her employees on Facebook are unbelievable. Judging by how she treats employees I will never go in this place again.

Cons: Shelly Fortel

.

My wife and I dined here last week, and we're not very impressed with what they have to offer. We ordered a large tossed salad and a large three-topping pizza. The salad came in a styrofoam take-out box: the lettuce was wilted and the mushrooms were slimy with black spots. Poor quality control.

Our pizza was just OK, considering all the other places around with STL-style pizza. The crust was of average consistency, and lacked any real flavor. The sauce was syrupy-sweet (full of high-fructose corn syrup?) and overpowered the taste of the pizza. Also, although the crust and sauce were cooked, but the toppings were almost raw, which makes me believe that they pre-cook their crusts, and when they get an order they top them and return them to the oven. Not good eats.
With all the other good pizza places in town, we won't be returning here.

My husband and I decided to try Fortel's Pizza Den last night, and much to our disappointment, we requested a refund. I assume it was Shelly, she said they don't have a refund policy, but yet refused to refund my $30.10. The toasted Ravioli were hot, but the dipping sauce was not. The drinks were overpriced at $2.00 each, and the pizza itself was over $20.00. We ordered the Jeff's Barbecue Deluxe, which tasted like cold buffalo chicken, and the pineapples (we paid extra for) tasted spoiled, and the whole pizza was juicy including the onions!!! After taking one bite, I informed my husband I could not bring myself to eat the rest of it. I informed the one woman that took our order (whom I believe is the manager) that I would pay for the toasted ravioli and the drink, but not the pizza, which was left sitting on the table...my husband ate one slice, and I took only one bite from my one slice. We immediately requested a refund...and this woman had the nerve to say: "Just because you don't like something, doesn't mean you can request a refund..." WTF!?!?!?!?...NO STYLE, NO CLASS, LACKING GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE SKILLS...Needless to say, NEVER AGAIN!!!! P.S. We left there and went straight to Imos...not a problem with Imo's...spent $10.00 less, and enjoyed my Imo's Pizza...

I can't see brining up the local police as a reason to avoid a restaurant... In fact, the local police directed me to Fortel's tonight and then, on second thought, joined me.\r
\r
Very good pizza. Thin, St. Louis style crust with a tangy sauce and real cheese. Hot peppers and cheese on the table. Free refills. (Large cheese and two drinks: $17.00.)\r
\r
O.K. family atmosphere: there are lots of video games for kids, televisions everywhere, beer for the adults, crayons and placemat games for kids.\r
\r
Two suggestions:\r
\r
1) Instead of showing sports on all of the television screens, why not dedicate a few of them to some family entertainment? silent movies (my choice); old cartoons; little Einsteins. It would offer a bit more for the kids and give the place even more of a family atmosphere.\r
\r
2) The game-room could use some updating and some more family-friendly games. War and commercialism seem to be the dominant themes here: dismember terrorists or buy a chance at a new watch. Maybe that's just what videogames are these days, though.\r
\r
It seems overall that there is a fundamental tension in this restaurant: is it a pizza sports bar or a family restaurant? At the moment, these two tendencies are in conflict: Too much sports for a family restaurant and too little smoking for a sports bar.

The last one we got had a second layer of cheese and pepperoni on it. It looked like it was made wrong and instead of making a new one they just covered it up and threw it back in the oven. When I called the manager she said she did not know why any body would do that, then I heard her scream at some one, when she came back she said they would give us a credit the next time we come in. That's been about 8 months ago but we can't get our nerve back to try them again.

I live in fl now but used to visit Fortels since it was right around the corner from my house. Not bad pizza but Ron and Shirleys on Gravois was my favorite. I know they closed a long time ago but I still have dreams of that pie!!

Their pizza tastes a lot like what my mother used to make. What separates Fortel's from your regular chains is that the ingredients taste a lot fresher to me...specifically the onions and mushrooms. Also, I haven't found many places that will put shrimp on pizza but this place does and it seems (and smells) so wrong but it tastes so right.\r
\r
I'm usually a huge fan of Imo's but this place comes in at a close second.

Simply put THEY USE IT BECAUSE ITS CHEAP!!!! But back to the point it's alright .

I am a transplant from Pittsburgh Pa. Believe me I had a difficult time finding good pizza in St. Louis. Everything was your everyday pizza chains. Finally, I found Fortel's, a family run Pizzaria for families. Fortel's is a great place to dine after the game. It is a great place to have any celebration. Fortel's takes pride in its product and always satisfies new and established customers. I just wish Fortel's would open a restaurant in Oakville, Mo. Thanks Fortel's, for making me feel at home in St. Louis!

The pizza is terrible. It is like they pour a bunch of suger into the sauce. It's terrible. I went with a chef freind of mine and he literally demanded his money back.

Fortel's Pizza Den is located in Fairview Heights, IL conviently located less than one mile from St. Clair Square Mall. This is a great family owned and operated pizza gem.

I can honestly say I have never had such wonderful pizza as I have had at their establishment. The food is fresh, and very appetizing. They offer a wide varitey of food to tempt your appetite from Buffalo Wings, Sandwhichs, Cheesesticks, Pastas, Pizzas and more! And of course you cannot leave without trying their mouthwatering dessert pizza. In Apple or Cherry it is a spread on pizza crust with crumb stresual toppping and and drizzled frosting.

Looking for a family enviroment to take your family for a night out? Look no further from their large TV's showcasing all the local sports happenings to the small arcade for the children. You are sure to find something for you family to and relax while eating great food!

PROS: Friendly Home Like Enviroment, Heavenly Food

Fortel's is a St. Louis favorite and it's easy to see why. The pizza is fabulous, appetizers are yummy, and the atmosphere for dining in is fun and family friendly. In addition, this Affton location has dining outside.

If you are looking for a fun pizza parlor to take the family, or maybe a group of friends or youth, look no further than Fortel's!

I heard all the great things about their pizza on the radio and friends, but when we picked one up we were VERY disappointed. Very bland taste and little expensive for a pizza place. Don't believe the hype, if you want a good pizza try local favorites like Imo's, Cicero's, or Racanelli's.

Either one likes the pizza or they don't...and my entire extended family thought it to be lacking flavor and over compensated with salt, maybe to enhance the flavor? Will not go again, nor will it be recommended.

I work by the new west location and the food is ok with some inconsistancy in preparation. I've gotten pizza couple of times that had so much oregano on it that it was uneatble. The wings are excellant. A word to the wise (don't order the cheese garlic bread). I find the pizza pricey by most pizza joints. overall opinion is that Fortel's is overrated

After an exhuastive search which resulted in numerous tongue scrapings, we found Fortell's. Great family pizza joint that PILES on the toppings, more than making up for the traditional st. louis-style non-existent crust. Staff is friendly and the place knows how to deal with kids: pizza slice-shaped plates. The Shelly's Delux it the fav here and the pasta is good too. Small Kirkwood location can get load, but then again, you don't have to tell your kids to shhh.

Whenever anyone comes to visit and we go for pizza, Fortel's is the place, hands down !
Even friends across the river in Illinois ask me to bring Fortels when we have a dinner get together.
Their crust is crisp and tasty and they LOAD the toppings on the pizza.
The atmosphere is very comfortable and inviting. The dining room can get crowded at times. There is outside seating in the summer. Very large parking lot.

i love imo's for the sheer ""st. louisness"" of it, and the fact that the provel always burns the roof of your mouth...
BUT fortel's is by far a superior pizza. the ingredients are more generous, the waitstaff is MUCH friendlier, and every Fortel's i've been to knocks Imo's right on its butt in the Cleanliness department.
I know for many st. louisans it's hard to give up on Imo's but i think it's lost its touch... it doesn't taste as good as it did 15 years ago. does anyone else agree??

I knew about this place before it was famous. I live in Affton and my family stumbled on it about 9-10 years ago. I know the owner and his family and they are very friendly, customer oriented, and very hard working. They have now become my friends. I can walk in anytime and see Bob or one of the family and they make a point of making me feel very welcome and important to them. I have been rooting for them for some time as they become more popular... Because I knew a secret and for a long time......they were and are the best pizza going.

Fortel's pizza's have abundant, fresh toppings, and are consistantly the best. The always friendly and comparitively faster service, only makes the intimate, but casual, family dining experience at Fortel's even better.

Pros: Abundant Toppings, Fresh Toppings, Great Service

I always went to Fortel's when I was a kid and recently started going back. Now I go once a week! The pizza is great (not to mention the cheese sticks!) and the service too! And we know every great place has a Pac-Man machine!!!!

To make the best pizza, you have to have the best ingredients. They make their own dough and sauce on premise. The veggies are fresh. And the meats are Bob Fortel's own recipe. Add to that they ovens that they are baked in, and you get a pizza that puts the ""square beyond compare"" to shame.
