I do have to say Dr. Means isnt a people person. You have to overlook that. He is best vet I have ever found. I moved from there a few years ago. I used him as vet while I was there for ten years. He saved alot of my animals when no other vet could. Yes he does old school way of doing things but should you question how your pet survived. He loves animals and communicates with them like no other way I have seen. You have to overlook his people skills. He isn't there for you.....he is there for your babies. People that neglect their animals he is just honest on how he feels about it. If it wasn't for him I don't know what I would of done. He is cheap but his care isn't. So anyone dogging him how bad he is should look in their animals eyes. I heard recently he isn't doing well with his health. The world is going to lose a great person and his impact on lives he has saved and their families! He will always be in my heart and never forgotten!

My husband and I recently moved to MO due to being restationed because we are military. We have one dog and 1 cat, both of whom receive regular vet care by the way of shots, heart guard, worm checks, physicals,etc...In fact i usually have 2-3 vets that see my pets because some are only open weekdays, some weekends, some do emergencies etc.. I was excited to try Dr. Means and the Alpine clinic because i got good reviews about how well he cares for animal. I was warned ahead of time that he has an ASD or something similar and is not really a people person but is great with animals. I myself have to BIL's with ASD's and work in healthcare so i am very familiar with ASD's and how awkward interaction can be for people with them. However i do not think having an ASD gives you a right to be unprofessional and treat new patients like crap just because they are new and don't know your quirks and how to walk on eggshells around you. Also you would think if Dr. Means has so many quirks that his staff would know how to brideg the gap between him and the customers so that customers dont run screaming from the facility, this is not the case however. Let me tell you about my first experience at Alpine vet clinic and why i wont ever go back.
Like i said my husband and i just moved to MO in may with our two pets, previously in our last home we had NO flea issues and kept our pets free from ticks and fleas using Biospot an OTC med we purchase at Petsmart when we get food and other supplies. Once we got up here within 2 months of being in residence our pets started showing signs of fleas. I began getting more aggressive with the OTC stuff and bathing the animals more often, but it was to no avail. The flea problem gets worse and now my husband has bites and i found fleas on my 7 month old daughter. Ok enough is enough, i research online some different things to help eliminate fleas both on my pets and in my home, but i still wanted to talk with a vet and formulate a plan to get rid of these pests and ask about the different medications like Capstar, Advantage II, and Frontline. I go in for my first appointment on Sunday and i check in at the desk with my cat and dog and i tell the girl at the desk whats going on and why i want to see a vet, she says ok no problem and writes my name down and i sit and wait. Now i read the sign that talked about wait times and i fully understood i would be there a while, i was fine with that. My poor pets were miserable biting and scratching and i just wanted to give them some relief and discuss options to treat my home with a professional because i had ZERO flea experience before moving to MO. So after the 1 1/2 hour wait the girl vet tech calls me back and i grab my crew and go. I walk into the exam area and haven't even set my cat in her carrier down on the table or had my dog walk in on his leash and Dr. Means looks at the diagnosis paper and reads why im here, he then looks at me and says, quote " I don't do flea infestations on Sundays, go somewhere else" and then promptly turned around and walked off. The vet tech started to ask him what he meant and he repeated himself to her and left the room. I stood there for a moment trying to figure out what the hell was going on and the vet tech and desk girl both looked embarrassed and walked off leaving me standing alone to let myself out. I kept my cool because i figured this was one of his ASD quirks, but inside i was royally pissed. I took my pets outside and loaded them up and went home. 15-30 minutes later i get a phone call from the vet tech wanting to recommend some OTC meds for me!! WTF??? I have been using OTC meds for 2 weeks with no help and i needed to discuss other things besides the OTC meds.
He treated me like a crappy pet owner who doesnt take care of my pets and i am far from that, thank you. He was so disrespectful even for someone with an ASD. His staff is not very well at communicating and helping new patients understand his bedside manner and all together this has turned me off completely. I called Lifetimes Vet clinic after i left and the Vet on call for emergencies was willing to hear my story and suggested stuff i could do for my home and what medications i should buy. I will be going there from now on because they know how to treat a new patient. its great that Dr. Means has a loyal clientele, he needs it. if his popularity were based on getting and keeping new patients he would fail, BIG TIME! If he loves animals so much and wants to treat them he wouldn't send away a miserable dog and cat and frustrated owner who were upset over a flea infestation and had no idea how to attack it. First impressions are everything and even with an ASD Dr. Means is unprofessional, bottom line.

Well I was told by my father in law that Dr. Means was the best vet in warrensburg by prices. So I decided to take my dog there because she was coughing and gagging. When I got there my appt was supposed to be at 5 and I was 2nd in line. But I FINALLY got seen at 6:15. Now they did look very busy so I let that slide but he was very very rude with me. He did not like that I bathed my dog once a month. He told me that I shouldn't bathe her at all(which I did not know). But the way he was talking to me I took as a rude way. SO I did get rude back. He asked me how many time my dog barked a day. I told him I couldn't really say it could be 3-40 times a day. It really depends on her mood. But he didn't accept that answer. He then asked me how many times I barked a day. Which aggravated me a lot. I walked outside to get away from the scene to calm down a little bit and sent my father in law in the room with my dog but he told my father in law that he could not finish his exam on my dog because I was angry with him. To me it has nothing to do with me. YOU ARE A VET NOT A DOCTOR!! So to me it doesn't matter what I think, he should of finished his job no matter what I think of him. But now tonight my dog is still coughing and gagging and we do not know what is wrong with her. I just don't see how a vet could turn a dog down that is obviously sick just because I didn't answer his question the way he wanted me to.

Dr. Means saved my very sick kitty and I will be forever grateful to him. I can't believe how litte he charged and how much he cared. He is a hero to myself and my daughters.

Over the years Doc Means has seen hundreds of animals from us. Living in the country, animals were often dropped off on our farm when I was growing up, and my parents would always take care of them until we found them homes. Doctor Means would often see us come in with 4 or 5 animals at once for vacs and checkups, and he would always patiently take them in and do his best.

Doc Means has cried telling us he couldn't save our animals. He's called with updates immediately if something has gone wrong. He's taken our animals on emergency notice without so much as a batting of the eyes or charging us more. He took one of our cats in on New Years Eve one year without so much as a complaint, he smiled, and THANKED US for loving our animal enough to bring her in so quickly. The stories are endless from us, and those we've heard in there.

Sure, he gets tired, he gets cranky, and no doubt he has little to no patience for people who care more about themselves than their animals. But consider the hours he keeps, or the hordes of animals that come through there every single day. Consider the lack of thanks he gets from pet owners most times, or how people get angry at him for not appreciating their ignorance.

The next time you take a pet him, consider how much he cares about your animal. Thank him politely for his time, and tell him how much you appreciate him. His is a thankless job, and personally, I believe he's pretty darned patient for what he has to see come through those doors and the hours he's kept over the years. Let him know that you appreciate his care...he appreciates hearing it, even if all you hear is a mumble in reply.

I've taken many animals to Doc Means over the years. He's very caring and sweet to the animals, even if he doesnt make eye contact and seems rude. Once my dog jumped through a window and had glass in her foot and I called Doc Means at 6:20 after closing and he took her in right away, kept her overnight and sutured her foot for $50. The other vets in town are expensive and it cost over $200 for a puppy checkup and heartworm medicine. If you want to spend $200, go to another vet- but remember that you're basically paying for someone to be nice to you. Doc Means will be nice to your pet for much cheaper!

Although, last time I was in there, Doc was very nice and even said "thank you". He's getting a lot nicer! Remember that Fluffy and Fido may be sweet to you, but they're not so gentle with someone trying to fix what ails them. Don't be defensive pet owners!

Dr. Means seems to be the focus of everyone's reviews. Yes he is a nut. But if people didn't act like complete morons he wouldn't treat them that way. The first time I brought a pet to Means he was short and very rude. I didn't care. He did what needed to be done. I then return with another animal about a month later. He was a lot nicer this time. When he realizes that pet parents are actually taking care of their animals he treats their humans better. I could not image being a vet for 30 years expect to have any patience for people. I can't stand people now. And if people showed the least bit of knowledge about animals he might not treat you like you are stupid. The point is that everyone gripe about doctors whether they are human or animal doctors and everyone just needs to get the hell over it. If you don't like them find someone else. I have taken several pets to Means for over 6 years now and have learned more about animals than I ever did. I can't believe people can't understand that professionalism is over-rated to quality care.

Dr. Means was there for my cat, Kona, at 2 AM on Christmas morning! My fiance and I had a fire at our place, luckily we were not there but Kona, our SON, was. The firemen took him straight to Alpine and Dr.Means took care of him like he was his own. We could not be more greatful for Dr. Means!!! Kona is 100% healthy now :)!

As I write this I am furious over what happened to me today with Doc Means. I have been taking two dogs there for over 11 yrs. today when I went in to pick up one dogs medication and it wasn't correct I asked the tech a question about it, she disappeared for a few minutes then Doc Means came out and told me if I wasn't happy there that I could just leave. I told him I just had a couple of concerns it wasn't that I was unhappy, reminded him I've been coming there for over 11 yrs! He just snarled and said "nope, we're done with you". I asked him could I at least buy my dog's medicine that he already had waiting for me(the dog suffers from an accute skin problem and really needs her meds) and he jjust grabbed the meds and said no were done with you! I went right to Lifetime Animal Center and made an appt for tomorrow morning and I WILL NEVER GO BACK AGAIN! This man is an absolute psychotic! His facilities are horrible and his equipment is outdated, the smell is outlandish and he obviously has no real care for pets at all! He knew this dog was suffering and refused to let me buy the medicine because someone dared to question him! A classic case of an egomaniac with an inferiority complex, I am ashamed I ever let him take care of my pets to save a few bucks. I will spend the rest of the time I live in this area advising everyone I know not to go there! The absolute most unprofessional encounter I have ever had with a DR. And the new place was HAPPY to have my biz! Grow up Dr Means! 1 STAR IS TOO MANY! AS I WRITE THIS REVIEW IT'S MAKING ME CHOOSE 4 STARS

He is a awesome vet period!!!! I dont know anyone who goes to a vet to socialize!!!! He provides great care and really cares about animals and their well being. He really listens to owners and lets neglectful owners know instead of sugarcoating it. If you are looking for a great affordable vet go to him. If you are looking for someone to socialize with go to another one and pay 3x or 4x what the cost should be.

I had a very bad experience ant this place of business. I brought my dog because she had become very ill. After waiting 2 hours...I was told to leave her so they could run tests on her. She was there a total of three days. I called everyday hoping to hear anything about my dog. On the third day I called and asked to talk to Dr. Means because I had not heard anything. I asked him when he thought my dog could come home because my girls really missed their dog. I will never forget what he told me because it really upset me and made me cry. Come get her...you might as well bring a pine box. I don't care if he was having a bad day or if his rates are cheap...you never talk to your customers like that. Its one thing to be straight forward...but to be plain rude and say hurtful things is wrong. When I picked her up from Dr. Means..I asked for a receipt to give my new vet so he would know what was done. No tests had been done. My dog stayed in his facility for 3 days suffering being fed cream of chicken soup which was stated on my receipt. I took my dog to another vet in Warrensburg. Within 30 min I was told what was wrong with my dog....she had cancer. I don't recommend this place to anyone...not even my worst enemy.

Dr Means was not rude to me, he was straight forward. He was completely down to business and took very good care of my dogs. I have moved out of the area now, but I will travel back the two hour drive to see him for two reasons. The first, is that he is obviously very inexpensive. The second, is that no matter how a place looks, smells, or is talked about, the CARE for the ANIMALS speaks for itself. The main thing to consider is this....no matter how inexpensive something is, people won't go back, if they feel the care is less than adequate...he is still in business, very busy, and a great vet.

I take my two boxers to Alpine Kennels for everything. Dr. Means does an amazing job and does whatever is needed for my pets. He is very affordable and does a great job. He is not the friendliest when it comes to people, but I don't care as long as he continues to treat my pets well. I would recommend his services to anyone.

I have worked with Dr. Means for three years now and he is not a mean person like everyone is saying. He is a really fun boss and cares for his employees. He also cares for the clients as well as animals but he comes off rude because he has had so many problems with people in the past. Remember, he has been a vet for 30 years so he knows how people are and we have heard everything. People don't come in with money but don't tell us until we do everything to their pet or they come in late at night when we're doing major surgery. Doc really does sympathize but he works over 16 hour days and deals with not-so-nice pets. He is straight forward because there are hours of clients to go through each day. Like the saying goes: Try to put yourself in his shoes. I don't think I would have stayed at Alpine for so long if he was as mean as people say. I learn a lot from him which is great because I am studying to be a vet and I feel that when I go to vet school that I will have an upper hand because he gets his me involved with each step of taking care of a sick animal. My advise to anyone reading is if you're expecting sympathy, give sympathy.

For your information, I used to work at that vet clinic. You all are correct to say that Dr. Means is not a people person. I wouldnt say that he is kind to his animals either. When I was there, he would cuss and yell at the cats. It was scary. Dr. "Means" is right!

Dr. Means as always was very good with my animal. I brought in a stray cat who has adopted my family (and who we have now adopted). He gave her all her shots and dewormed her. I actually got a chuckle out of him today which is a rarity. He is not a people person, all that matters to him is the care of the animals.

My girlfriend told me about her vet in Warrensburg (which is about a 45 minute drive from where I live). So I decided to take my dog and cat there to have them checked out. He is awesome with the animals, just not a real people person. He takes care of the problems and listens to what you have to say about what is going on but don't expect him to be so friendly with you. But I would recommend going to him again. What would have cost me over $100 for each animal ended up costing me $28.50 for BOTH TOGETHER. (This is the cost for the proceedures and medication that needed to be done for my animals). I was impressed. And if you go on a Saturday it's first come first serve and we were there at 8:06 and was seen an hour later. I've heard that you take a chance on when you go like that because he is so reasonable.

Pro: Inexpensive, great with animals
Con: Long distance, not friendly towards people

Dr. Means is an awsome vet! He was very good with my dog, his prices are the lowest in our area. However he isnt very kind to people and talks down to them even when they ask a simple question about the care of their animals. He has what I could only describe as no bedside manor for the owner and offers no sympathy to owners who must let their dogs die. My dog Tobie a Chocolate Lab was brought in to me fixed and came home with kennel cough. The place stinks of animal feces but the vet cares for his patients. I would recommend this place to anyone who is on a budget but not picky about how they the animal owner is treated or about the smell of the place.

PROS: Great Prices
CONS: The Vet seems unfriendly but is great with your pets
