My husband made reservations at the Plaza III for our 15th wedding anniversary. I got online to review the menu in advance. I was worried because most of the reviews I read were not very good. I'm glad to say that I found the food to be better than I had expected after the reviews. They show you the different cuts of meat available. A tray of veggies and dip and a loaf of warm bread is brought to the table. We enduldged in all courses available. Our dessert was on the house since it was our anniversary. I was also pleased that our meat was prepared exactly how we ordered. We were both very pleased with our entire meal. I was already prepared that the prices were going to be higher than I'm used to spending. The service was also very good. The atmosphere was nice and quiet so we could have good conversation while there.

Wonderful place for a steak or seafood, but we recommend the steak. Excellent service, great atmosphere and good waiting area. Take a walk on the Plaza, wait in the bar or outside. This is a good place for a date.

This is the place to get a good steak in Kansas City. Located in Country Club Plaza, Plaza III offers the finest in steaks and seafood. Service is always prompt and friendly. My steak has always been cooked exactly as I ordered. This is a wonderful place to go for special events or business dinners. Country Club Plaza is one of the most beautiful areas in all of Kansas City. After dinner, take a stroll through the Plaza and marvel at the beauty of all the fountains.

KC is a major hub of steakhouses and picking one was tough. We didn't pick the best. We ate at Plaza III down at Country Club Plaza. The setting is impressive...dark wood beams, cozy wrap around booths, and large dining rooms. Our server was very attentive and informative. They have a wine steward to aid in selecting a perfect bottle of wine. We chose an 03 Kunde Merlot that was excellent. The Crab Cake appetizer was light and loaded with lump crab meat. The atmosphere and extras were all impressive. However, when it came to steak, we were both a little let down. Both (a filet and KC strip) were ordered medium but undercooked. In my opinion, a great steak needs no sauce--steaksauce or otherwise. Steaks should be well seasoned before grilling to bring out the natural flavor of the meat. Plaza III takes a low key approach, and I could taste faint seasoning on the outer sections, but mostly I tasted beef. The beef itself was excellent, but all beef needs something extra to accompany it. Thankfully we both ordered Bernaise sauce on the side. We will not be returning. The filet mignon at the Jackson Lake Lodge in Wyoming and the filet at the Montgomery Inn come to mind as being Plaza III's betters, and I'm sure I'm forgetting....Oh well. We're still on the search for KC's best steak...

Pros: Atmosphere, Attentive Server, Extensive Wine List

Cons: Steaks themselves not worth the high prices

My husband and I love to try different restaurants, so for our first anniversary, we headed to Plaza III. Though our server was most gracious, our dinner definitely left something to be desired. My husband asked for his lamb to be medium well to well done, and it came out medium rare. Though our server took his lamb back to the kitchen promptly, I was done eating my steak and lobster by the time my husband got his lamb chops back. He said the lamb chops were good though (not great). I was not wowed with my filet and lobster either. The steak was good but I felt needed a little more seasoning. The lobster was lobster, so no complaints there. For dessert we orded the tiramisu.....but it tasted like they used too much almond flavoring and not enough coffee. We will not be returning to Plaza III. I'd rather go to J Gilberts or Capital Grille for a fine dining experience.

Pros: Service is very good

Cons: Underwhelmed by food

.

The food is delicious. The jumbo shrimp appetizer is offered in your choice of three different sauces. You have lots of choices on the potatoes too. This restaurant gives you more choices than most. The steaks are wonderful. Serving portions are good. You can add a lobster tail to your entree and split it with someone. You wouldn't be able to eat it all plus your steak. The restaurant ambience is nice. Service is excellent. They have live music on weekend nights. This is one of the few restaurants that handles LARGE groups efficiently.

To start off, the waitress, Pamela, took at least 5-10 minutes to get our drink order. Not that we were really in a rush, but, when you go to a restaurant as expensive as Plaza III and the restaurant isn't even busy, why should we have to wait that long to get waited on? We did have a reservation by the way. Appetizers we had the seafood bisque and the steak soup. Both tasted very good but could have been served warmer. We split the spinach salad which was pretty good. Then came the entrees. My husband ordered the Kansas City strip-- he said the cut was great and it was cooked as ordered-- medium rare--- although there was no flavor whatsoever. He was putting salt and pepper on it-- for $39. I ordered the tuna steak. Let me just say this-- awful. Simple as that. As sides we ordered the creamed spinach-- very fair-- not nearly as good as Ruth Chris or Capital Grille. Also the lyonnaise potatoes-- once again-- no good. We were loading it up with salt and pepper-- it basically tasted as if it had been sitting in the kitched for hours and it just got scooped up onto the plate. The best was this: as our waitress, Pamela, came over to pick up our plates, she asked me if everything was okay since I had clearly not eaten much. I said, no actually, it wasn't very good." I wasn't trying to be rude, just honest. Her response was, "oh, and sir how was your steak?" My husband replied, "good." She says, "Yeah, our steaks are great. " She then walked away. My belief is, if you know that your seafood is not that good, why is it on your menu? It was a $29 entree that was awful. If you are going to be a GREAT steakhouse, then everything should be great. There was nothing great about this place. We will definitely stick with the Ruth Chris and Capital Grilles of the world. Lastly, my husband did speak with the manager who did nothing at all. He said if we came back he would make sure our next meal was better. I think we will pass.

Went there for a party. The food was excellent and they accommodated the big group very well! I will go there again when I can afford it.

4/23/07 Went to Plaza III located on "the plaza" downtown. Parking was free and parking deck was attached to the restaurant and 2 valets were outside and very friendly. I was by myself after a long drive (hadn't eaten all day) and the hostess seated me in a nice quiet booth area and they brought out a complimentary sourdough bread and an ice filled bowl with vegetables and dip which was very good. I then ordered a glass of their House Chardonnay, a smoked atlantic salmon platter appetizer, a 16 oz filet mignon steak (medium rare) and 1/2 side of white cheddar potatos. First of all, the wine was very good and flavorfull. Then the smoked salmon appetizer platter came out and had very nice side garnishes with a sharp tasting mustard dipping sauce and toasted bread. The salmon was excellent. Then they brought out the steak and I cut into it and had my first bite and it was the most amazing and falvorful steak I have ever eaten (and I've eaten allot of steak). It was so tender that I didn't need a knife to cut the meat. Then came the dessert cart and I ordered a berry dessert with several fruits (raspberries & stawberries & real whipped cream) along with a decaf coffee. At the end of the meal I was a happy man, although it was quite expensive ($103 just for myself including my tip) but at least I was on business. I would definitely recommend going and highly recommend the filet mignon.

Pros: The steak

Cons: Costly

I dined at the Plaza III with a business group. This was a restaurant that I would not normally go on my own because of the outrageous prices. I was looking forward to what I would have expected to be top notch steak in Kansas City. What a disappointment. While the atmosphere was pleasant, I found the wait staff pushy in trying to increase the amount of food we ordered. The very stingy appetizers were also mediocre. We ordered 3 seafood appetizer platters at $29 each which consisted of 2 oysters Rockefeller, 2 shrimp and 2 crab cakes and lots of garnish. We also ordered a plate of 6 fresh oysters for $12 which were over-chilled and tasteless. Then came the steaks. I had a Kansas City Steak Fromage. At $36 for only the steak, I would have expected top quality prime beef. They made a big presentation of the "prime grading" of their steaks but when my steak came, I would have confused it with shoe leather. While it was cooked to my liking (medium rare), it was so tough that I could barely chew it. Since I was amongst customers and the CEO of my company, I chose not to make any comments. But I was appalled at what was served. The overpriced side orders were far too much for a single person (to make up for the $8 cost each) and quite frankly, just plain blah. The wait staff poured wine at their own discretion to once again drive up our bill. We went through 4 bottles of red zinfandel for 9 people. After a big sell and a request that the souffle be ordered before dinner, 2 came. They had collapsed and were gooey in the middle. This isn't a souffle that I had ever seen. The dessert offering was once again overpriced and quite frankly unimaginative. Bottom line: You don't get what you pay for at Plaza III. By the way, this was the Plaza III on 137th Street in Leawood, not the original restaurant. I will avoid this place for my business guests in the future. I'm just happy it wasn't my hard earned money that paid for this abysmal experience.

Service and atmosphere very good and the steaks are cooked to perfection tho' I did find it a bit overpriced. Ordered a low end French red wine (Cote d'rhone) at $29. and was quite surprised that it came with a twist off cap. No French winery would ever think of doing such a thing. If it was truly French wine then it must have been bottled here in the US. I'll dine there again but HOLD the wine.

Plaza III is definitly not worth your time or money. My steak was poorly flavored and salad tasted like I was chewing on grass. I would definitly not go back, EVER! I much rather spend my evening at The American Resturant.

First - they bring out a cart with the different cuts of meat.
Once you get the nerve to select one(the reason why I say that - is that they all looked sooo good)You then select salad and or soup - then side dishes. I opted for a salad and save room for the steak - Once the plate came out - it looked like a photo that you would see in a magazine. I took the first cut - and I felt like I died and went to steak heaven..... I could not stop....it was one bit after another with little to no conversation with my co-worker until we where done. After that - the compliments could not stop flowing.
I have eaten at Ruths-several Prim Rib houses and still NOTHING compares to this.

Have been going to this place for years. They've never failed to satisfy. Tough to get a bad piece of meat in this place in a city where you gotta work at getting a bad piece of meat. Service is the best. Food is even better. Locally-owned. I've eaten in some of the best restaurants on the face of this planet and P-3 is right up there with 'em. As good as it gets when it comes to steak.

Plaza III has one of the best steaks in town, however, their side dishes are in need of major help. I have traveled the globe and never had such poor side dishes paired with a really good steak. The steak soup is great, the ceasar salad way too garlicky and the berry mousse dessert is very good.

This might have been the toughest steak I have ever had at any price. With what I heft on the plate in the form of gristle and fat, one would think a red flag would have went up and I would be questioned. I complained via email but received no reply. Buyer beware!

I love making the service run through the cart, watching huge stacks of delicious beef get waved in front of your nose is the best appetizer there is.

Theres no place better on a Saturday night to sink your teeth into a 18oz KC Strip and listen to a authentic KC Jazz band down in the Plaza III's/City Lights jazz room. Great atmosphere, service, and music. If your in from out of town and need to go to one steakhouse this place is it. The upstars is a bit stodgy and lowkey, to business-like to suit me. Give me a steak, jazz, and a stiff martini and let the rest take care of itself

Owner got tired of lack of consistency of beef ordered, now raises his own. Exceptional atmosphere. Great Service. On the Plaza, Plaza II Steakhouse is in my mind the best in KC and that is saying alot. It is expensive. They have a deep wine cellar. Great for business dinners or with friends.

Some of the comments here are ludicrous!! I have eaten at many so-called great steakhouses and this is by far one of the best! I read some comments about marinating steak--why would you do that unless it is a tough steak (like flank)? The best part about the steak is that they age it and don't add any seasonings--the natural flavor of their steaks come through without the added flavors (a.k.a. marinades or sauces that use sugar or corn syrup) that can ruin a steak...this is one of the best and I have eaten at many places in St. Louis, Omaha, Minneapolis, Des Moines, and Chicago! It is fairly spendy but you get what you pay for--great service and excellent food!!

I try to eat at the Plaza III at least every month or two. The service is always first rate and the aged beef melts in your mouth. Pricy--for a good reason!

THis place is awesome. You see your steak beforehand and it is cooked perfectly. Impeccable service as well. Not sure if I would call it kid friendly, but our 7 yo did enjoy going for her Mom's 40th bday.

I recently visited Plaza on a business trip. The mere mention of this restraunt to my clients had them all chomping at the bit to be invited. The service was spectacular and the food was even more spectacular. It was a great setting and really made the client happy. For a business dinner in KC Plaza Iii is the only place to go! I would just call a few weeks ahead if you have a large group!

Pros: Great Food

Cons: Expensive, Expensive

The Plaza III is by far the best steakhouse I've been to in Kansas City. It is not for the thrifty, but you get what you pay for. The quality of the food is second to none. The ambience of the restaurant invites you to relax and enjoy the entire dining experience. The wait staff is very knowledgeable, helpful, and always there when you need them (but without ever being a nuisance).

The Plaza III is a great restaurant to have a wonderful meal; and if you want to make an impression, there's no better place to take someone special.

Plaza III has the best steak I have ever had, above and beyond Jess and Jims and Herford house, Plaza III is tops. Cooked to perfection and it was served at the perfect temperature. Unfortunatly I do not have the pocketbook to visit here often, but the food is worth the price.

After a couple of wonderfull experiences at the Plaza III, my wife and I realized the one downfall of experiencing these great steaks.

Now everytime we order "steak" listed on a lesser restaurants menu, our pallete remembers the Plaza III, and the ordered steak just doesn't satisfy as it should.

Plaza III is a waste of money. They are over priced and their "claim to fame" is pathetic. They marinate their steaks in what? Nothing. They age them for 20 days or so. They soak in their own juice and have absolutley no flavor when brought out to you. Then if you ask for a sauce, i.e. A1, they look at you like you are crazy. The way to determine if it is truly a good stake is if you can eat it without any sauce.

Though one of the most expensive steak venues in town it is the best. Food has always been prepared to perfection and this is one of the few establishments that knows how to cook a steak to a medium-char or "Pittsburgh" style. Cudos!!!!!!!

We extremely enjoy our dinners at Plaza III. The steak soup is an excellent beginning, the steak or fish is always delicious and we haven't had a bad dessert yet!

This is one of the best steaks in town. Extremely accommodating professional staff. A great place to take a date, accented with dark wood and a low lit dining area, it can be romantic or fun. It is formal but has a casual ambiance; it can be loud for a group of friends or quiet for a romantic evening. The food is wonderful; the specials are shown to you before you order and cooked to your specifications. It is always great. With dinner most of the time you have free access to the club downstairs featuring superb drinks and on the weekends (at least) a live band. The band we saw was a great jazz band. Take a date, take a group, and enjoy the food and drinks.

This Kansas City steakhouse has been a Plaza mainstay since 1963. Locals know they can count on finding both a USDA Prime steak and local jazz. We recommend the tenderloin tartare, a classic rendition made with chopped filet mignon and…
