Highly reccomend for amazing food and great service. Good for business outing or romantic dinner for two (ask for a private booth). The smoke house next door has great treats for take home.

While the food was good, not great, the smoke is intolerable. The steak was good, the mashed potatoes only fair but one can't get away from the smoke and that ruins the entire atmosphere. While I hate eating around all smoke, the cigarette smoke was OK, but once people starting smoking cigars it was awful. I will not go back until they stop allowing cigar smoking!! the owners should know better!

This restaurant is sooo overpriced for what you eat, quantity and quality. I went there with friends, and it was just one big show....like who could impress who more. Food was adequate, and that is being kind, wait staff...acceptable. When I want good food, I dont mind paying the price, but this is about people saying how much they spend just to say they came to your establishment. I dont get into that kind of kindergarten mentality, I go out to eat for good food regardless if it is at your establishment or somewhere else. I dont go somewhere to brag about the "name", I go for ambience and good food!!

Pros: Not too many...

Cons: Read below !

Steak selections are over priced. One would expect prime steaks not angus for the money. If you want a good steak stick with the best: Mortons or Ruth Kris.

I'm a steak and potato kind of guy. No one does it better than Annie Gunn's. If you know that you're going to be visiting a while from now, I highly recommend reservations. If you get a chance, ask for a "snug" one of the private one-booth rooms with a sliding door for privacy.

Although quite pricey, our experience at Annie Gunns' was a pleasant one. My sister and I took our mother to lunch. Being a BLT fan, Mom ordered it. It held a very generous portion of the wonderful smoked bacon from the smokehouse next door. My salad was tasty, but the dressing lacked "oomph". Our server was wonderful, friendly, and very attentive but did not hover. All in all, I recommend this restaurant for a reasonably pleasant dining experience. Be sure to visit the grocery next door. The samples of ham salad I tried were wonderful. I bought an apple crumb pie, and was disappointed when I cut it for company at home that evening. For the price, they were stingy on the apples and the crumb topping wasn't thoroughly baked. The assortment of cheeses, however, was amazing!!

Over Rated!! We were first timers and obviously had expectations that far exceeded their reality!! Were seated at a corner table by the rest room, it was busy not a problem. About every employee passing by bumping into my wife's chair and acted disgusted like she was in the way.(BTW She is not fat by any means & had pulled in tight to the table.) The head waitress passed by and bumped her in the head with a stack of menus, she was holding in her right arm.(And I am positive it was quite by accident!) When asked if we could have another table they acted like we were asking for the world and left us sitting for about twenty minutes. Finally the head waitress that bumped my wife in the head came over and inquired why we wanted to move? We explained and were told they were busy and stuff like that just happens.(NO Apologies!!) Also she wanted to argue with us about her bumping my wife in the head!! As opposed to saying she was sorry and did not realize she had done it, she went into a dissertation denying that it happened. The food! It was ok but but not remarkable. We have eaten at far better restraints than Annie Gunn's for less money!! The waiter was above average & friendly!! The Management has a lackadaisical attitude and needs retraining in Customer Service. This place has (Had) a good reputation from the past as was conveyed by several friends. But, they obviously have had a drastic decline in competent employees and are trying to survive off their past reputation. As I guess you may have surmised for your self by now this was our First and Last time eating at Annie Gunn's! Good Luck if you chose to try it.

Ended up at Annie Gunns last weekend for dinner with friends. Nice vibe walking in the door. Lively crowd, tv's showing sports up above us. Overall, feel of place thought I was in for a good dinner.

Here is the challenge. Way too expensive for what you get. I had the shrimp appetizer they are famous for. Pretty tasty. I had a filet for the main course. I had some homemade icecream for dessert.

Quality of the food is not the issue. The price, especially for St. Louis, is way too high. My steak was $28. My appetizer was $14. Come on now.

If the price wasn't so ridiculous, I would recommend the place. It was fun. The menu is extensive. The food quality is good. The prices are what shoots the place for me.

Annie Gunns... The apps were ok. How can you screw up chips. The drinks are very, very expensive. The meal was ok (sent steak back because it was overdone). Portion size were small... for what was charged I should have been able to take the plate home. Be prepared to wait even though you made reservations.
Skip it, St. Louis has many other restaurants that do it better.

Annies is what I would deem 'normal' food. Potatoes that taste like potatoes, a steak that tastes like a steak. Good crab cakes. Decent glass of wine.

But for the price? This isn't fine dining. It's just a nice steakhouse.

If you want dinner at a reasonable time, make sure that you make reservations far in advance. The place is crowded to the gills, and the noise level is a bit much, unless you imbibe and then you'll be fine. LOL

And yes, there is pretentiousness, but mostly from the clientele, not from the staff. I've yucked it up more than once with some of the wait people, who made the experience enjoyable.

You'll have a decent meal here. But if you've got a palate that is more sophisticated, Annies isn't something that you'll write home about.

Jaalain's review was totally wrong. Annie Gunns is a wonderful restaurant. She must have ordered her steak well done because their steaks are never tough. Their steaks and seafood are wonderful. They have the best meat loaf ever along with their jumbo grilled shrimp. Their steaks will melt in your mouth. Check out their specials as you can't go wrong. Try their Selbach wine with your meal as well.

No qualms about the food and servive, although a little pricy...but be ready for an atmosphere where it's almost impossible to hide from the smokers.

We'd love to go back but not until the management learns that smoking is an awful habit and we non smokers don't appreciate "non-smoking areas" in name only!. It may be a place to be seen, but not by folks like us who don't want to send our clothes to the cleaners when we get home.

Sorry "Annie"...clean up your air and we'll be back.

Sorry Annie

Atmoshere is warm and pleasent. The food and drinks are way way way overpriced but decent. I dine out 4 to 5 nights a week with my wife and friends. St Louis has many fine resturants that are reasonable with better food. Overated.

I am from Manhattan, have traveled and lived all over the world ... I have sophisticated taste ... I know value ... and rest assured Anne Gunn's has neither. I guess if one is from St Louis one would think this place expensive and it is considering the extremely low quality of the food and service. There were four of us here on business ... we tried a little of everything ... steak (amazingly tough!! worst I have ever had) ... swordfish (extremely fishy smell, obviously not very fresh) ... but what can one expect from a restaurant that specializes in POTATOES!! I do admire the owners of Gunn's as they have hit on a gold mine ... diners that know nothing about food that are willing to pay anything for it. Watching the uninformed clientele was enjoyable ... everyone trying to "out pretend" each other. What a hoot!

We went to Annie Gunns last night for dinner. The server was incredibly good, referencing his notes as needed to inform us of everything from the types of sauces on menu items to the specific type of cheeses on the cheese platter. The ambiance was lovely out on the patio.
The drawbacks that I found were small things -
the place settings didnt scream "high class - you are about to drop some serious coinage",
our candle was never lit,
some of the menu items lacked flavor (the foie grois was over cooked, the dressing on the house salad was lack luster, and there could have been some other flavors on the scallop special plate - 4each 2oz scallops is a LOT of scallop - they were good, but some had a bit of sand type grit to them and the flavor kindof got boring after the 2nd one).

All in all - the evening was very nice, I just could have gone for some more details for the prices.

Steaks prepared to perfection and some of the freshest fish I've ever had in the midwest. The Yellow fin tuna was absolutely perfect and the fresh oysters were great. The chef doesn't cover the flavor of the meat by drenching it in sauce. Food is very expensive but well worth it. Same goes for wines by the glass, but where else can you get a glass of Opus One? Bottle prices were on par with most good restaurants and selection is great.

AG's has THE best burger going! Steaks are great, and the BBQ shrimp is awesome. The crab cakes, sandwiches, potatoes...I could go on and on. And they dont water down their drinks!!
On the negative side, it is a bit crowed and noisy, and you gotta make reservations way in advance.
But over all, you cant get a better burger for the money.

It's a shame that the owners did not consider what importance people attach to noise levels. My wife and I and another couple dinned there a few months ago. We were seated in a booth and the noise level was such that meaningful conversation was near impossible. The food was very good and served in a timely manner. The pluses stopped there. We'll not return.

OK, I know I'm talking about my beloved fellow St.Louisans and I've been here since I was born except for 7 years right after college, but guys....you're dining tastes are NOT sophisticated enough to rate hot dogs! Annie Gunn's is simply the best restaurant in the area. Ask anyone who visits St.Louis and they will tell you where they dine. It's NOT Tucker's! Thankfully AG's will not close due to you C minus semi-morons. There are enough regulars to keep it going in a very healthy way. In the mean time, those of you who voted for the likes of Tucker's or Outback or any other cheap chain-type place that was ahead of AG's on the list, try a real steak at Annie Gunn's. Spend a few bucks more. It won't break you.

Cons: Tough Reservation, I don't own it

We currantly visited the infamous "Annie's" and were not let down by any part of our experience. From the phone reservation to the thank you many times at the end....we cannot wait to return. The food was both familiar and new. Our server was very knowledgable and helped us through what we would like and what price range would allow us to enjoy the entire experience without leaving broke. I will recommend this place to everyone as one of the top 3 places in STL to dine.

123 bucks for an appetizer, two steaks, two house salads, two glasses of wine and two coffees. It would have been too expensive at half the cost but then you wouldn't have been treated like they were doing you such a huge favor by allowing you to be in their presence. Go there if you want to be treated like crap, get the worse service in your life and spend three times more than what it's worth. If they know you have money, you'll be severely sucked up to. We watched it from our table. It was pathetic.

The first time I went to Annie Gunns I was not impressed. For the price I paid, I left hungry and not satisfied with the taste. Since then, I've been back once on my $ and twice on someone elses $. The last 3 times have made up for my first visit. It still is very expensive but the food and service have been great. This is a meat market for the middle age group of people, that is just fyi. It is a place everyone in St. Louis must go though. I'd would recommend it.

I ordered a six ounce aged filet the other night from Annie Gunn's. It came with yukon gold mashed potatoes and asparagus. Now I work at Cravings in Webster, and it blows Annie Gunn's away with the same food. Craving's has better filets that are more tender and flavorful, their mashed potatoes are far better and full of flavor, and they have the best asparagus I've ever had. On top of that Cravings is cheaper and the same quality if not better. I don't understand how Annie Gunn's even made the list.

I've eaten lunch here twice while visiting St. Louis (not counting the many visits to the Smokehouse for a tasty sandwich). While it is a bit on the pricy side, the food is excellent! The ambiance is great, and for both of my visits the service was fine. Meatloaf is to die for!

I went to Annie Gunns recently and had a good meal overall. I wasn't looking foward to it because I do not care for meat and potatoe restaurants normally. I ordered the Ribeye and fell in love. It was cooked properly and tasted great. I was pleasantly surprised and will definetly be back.

You would think by the way the people act at Annie Gunn's that you were eating at Hooters. Ex-jock businessmen in their 40's drinking heavily and yelling at top volume about what great cars they drive, reliving their glory days at high school and/or college pawing at the fake women hanging around in the bar.
Unless that's your thing: go elsewhere.
