This shop is so organized and the service is fast. You would not get disappointed with their cakes and pastries. Try them yourself.

I can only confirm the bad reviews that have been posted about the poor customer service, dirty conditions, health code violations that have already been posted. I too used to go to McLain's when it was run by the original owners. The past few times I have been there, there are flies in the bakery cases and the last straw was reading in the Kansas City Star on the multiple violations of McLain's resulting in them shutting the doors for a short period of time (possibly just hours). I pulled up the health report on line and it looks like the owner was just as grouchy and uncooperative with the health department as he apparently is with his customers as indicated by the other reviews. Sad and disappointing that they can continue to operate like this, but they'll have to do it without my support.

Best povitica this side of the Mississippi! Current owners Patty and Don are just a lovely and charming couple and I feel as though I'm coming home when I'm in Waldo. Customer service is impeccable as there are always people going in and out making purchases but never a line.

Pros: good, clean bakery

Cons: needs a cafe setting which would perfect in good ole Waldo!

I have attempted to go here on several occasions over the past year or so. Each time the customer service gets worse. The first time I ordered some danish. I asked for them to be put in a box so that the danishs would not get mushed together ect and they told me they only put danishs in a box if a dozen was ordered! So the 8 I wanted were put in one bag and smushed by the time I got to the office.

Another time I went in and wanted to order a cake. My mother can not have a lot of sugar, so I asked if they could make a cake with a shipped topiing bersus buttercream and the man who was talking to me told me they do not do that and when I asked if they could do a special order he was rude and told me that I apparently didn't "hear" him and he turned around and left to the back. We were in the middle of a conversation!

The last time I went in, in was about six months since my last visit, and I wanted to place an order for some baked goods. The woman was very rude, basically ignored me at first, and then when I pushed to try to get her attention, she just got ruder. I left without placing the order, and got the ordered filled at Sams for less. I love supporting family business of corporate chains, but this was the last time I will try to go there. They need to learn to serve their customers and treat them right.

McClains is truly an institution. It does seem that the new owners have a bit to learn about customer service, and business management, but the quality of the bakery is nonetheless, exactly as it has been for the past 45 years. If others say that the products are different, that is simply not true.
When I was a little girl, (I'm 55 now), we lived within blocks of McClains. Mrs. McClain was a very dear and lovely woman, who was very kind to my mother. I remember the pineapple breakfast danish for which they are well known, as a favorite. They're the same now as they when I was 7.
Let's hope wish the new owners much success so we can continue to enjoy the great sweet treats that they offer!

I was extremely disappointed with the cake I ordered from McLain's bakery this weekend. I too, like previous posters have used this bakery for years. I will definately never use it again. The cake was nothing like what I asked for, and even faxed a picture of to them. The baby on the cake had purple eyes. Purple eyes?! How many babies do you know that have purple eyes?? I cried when I saw this overpriced cake that I had to work into the budget because I knew it would be remarkable. $60 for a cake I should've gotten at Price Chopper for 1/3 of the price.

Awful experience. first of all Im a Waldo area native. I remember going to McClains frequently as a kid. I remember days on Saturday when you couldnt get in the door, they had 4 or 5 ladies serving all the customers. On this day (it was fairly early in the day) the store was only half stocked, the people that I assume were the owners acted like they didnt care. I visited a couple weeks ago with my mom (first time in a couple years) I didnt know that it had been sold by the McClain family. The man that was sitting in the corner with his head between headphones was one of the nastiest, rudest people Ive ever dealt with. The lady that was working the counter acted like we were interrupting her day, the place was a mess. It is awful what these horrible people have done to the McClain legacy. Highly doubtful that I will ever return

The bakery in Lee wood never cleans the floors, and if you look in the cases they are not cleaned out daily either. The do not take the time to clean up the utensils they use, and they do not waste their time to make the products look presentable like they have at the other bakery. Just looks and feels like a second hand bread store with the same second hand help.

Unsanitary business. Check out their health department reports.
This is not a business you want to patronize...EVER...What was once a top class bakery has turned into trash.

I was one of a few customers in Mclains bakery couple weeks ago. There was on older lady working as fast as she could. But the health Dept was also there being rude to her. And then the owner (I believe) came in. After he was done with the health dept, he started cursing the elderly lady that was working for him. And in back we all heard him screaming at her, and calling her the B....... word. And throwing very loud pans I believe. When she came back up she was crying, and a couple of us asked her if she was ok, and if that man just fired her over his own problems. And she said yes, so me and another couple gave her our numbers as wittnesses to what had happened to her. I am suprised he did not give her a heart attack..... I then turned and left.

I went into this bakery and was ordering a cake, and the lady said she had to ask someone a question on my order. So she then walked over to an older man that was sitting down at a desk and as he turned (with his uncleaned body) he was listineing to her as he scratched his crotch area. And let me say I do not think he wears underwear. If that helps the picture. I ask the lady who he was and she said he was the owner of the bakery. He walked over being nice, but with the HIGH smell of extreme alcohol, he started to talk. But if he is the owner, I can only imagine the bakers and the other people who handle our food in the back. I never finished my order. I just said that I had to think about it and left.

I called McLain's to request a menu to be faxed to my office. Not only did the gentleman take my number he stayed on the line to ensure I received my fax! While we waited for the fax to come through he spoke to me about the upcoming improvements (menu will be online at www.mclainsbakerycom) in the near future. I have only started using this bakery as a friend had recommended (her mother has been going there for years). I hope to continue receiving this good of service!

I also experienced poor customer service at McLain's a few montha ago. I had ordered a cake from there during the week and was set to pick it up at noon on Saturday. I was out Saturday morning running errands with my infant daughter and around 12:25 got a call from my husband on my cell phone saying that a lady from McLain's had called and sounded annoyed and said I was suppose to pick up my cake at noon and someone needed to get there immediately to pick it up b/c they were trying to close. I know I was a little late, but geesh. I raced over there and was there by 12:35. The sign on the door said they were open until 2pm. I believe it was the owner who helped me when I got there, and older woman with glasses. I said I was there to pick up my cake and she rolled her eyes, I apologized for being late, she didn't say one word, I said thanks at the end of the transaction, still not one word. She didn't say one word to me the entire time she ran me up! No hello, no it's ok, no you're welcome, nothing....all I got was an eye roll. The cake was good, but I won't go there again because she was so rude. Mean, old lady.

After being a loyal customer for as long as I can remember, I will no longer shop at McLain's Bakery after a recent experience. During this recent visit, wherein I purchased $85 worth of baked goods for a family who had just lost a loved one, I was shocked and appalled by the horrendous customer service rendered by none other than the OWNER! I had pre-ordered 4 dozen cookies for the family, and upon arriving to the store, decided to add a few more items to my order. I ordered an assortment of rolls and began looking at the Valentine cookies as I was planning to order some for the children of this family. I realized that the owner was placing the rolls into bags, so after apologizing for the late request asked that they be placed in a box and explained where I was delivering them. She was upset with this request even though she had only put six rolls in a bag. She rolled her eyes and huffed. It ended with me being the person to place the rolls in the box.
I was born and raised in Kansas City and McLain's Bakery goods have been a long standing part of my family's traditions. Not only did we have them every Easter and Christmas, my mom would keep our freezer stocked with them. However, I shared this experience with my mom, my seven siblings and friends and learned that not only had many of them also received poor customer service at McLain's, most agreed that the quality of the baked goods has declined as the prices have gone up.
I know that the bakery was recently (within the past 5 or so years) purchased by a Brookside couple. They may have bought the name, but they have not lived up to the standards set by the original owners who started the bakery in 1945.
Although I strongly believe in supporting local businesses, I will no longer support McLain's Bakery.

We called McLain's long distance from Colorado with an unusual request: deliver a large gift of "comfort foods" to an address 30 miles away from the bakery, in time for the funeral of our boss's mother. Not only did the nice couple who owns McLain's go over all the options of what would be good to include, but they delivered it on time and with a note explaining who it was coming from. They were kind and understanding and the fresh-baked goodies were a huge success. It couldn't have worked out better.

McLains Bakery is located in the heart of the Waldo Neighborhood in Kansas City, Missouri. This small, quaint bakery has been a favorite in Kansas City for many years. They bake all of their items every morning. They have the best pastries, cookies, and many other sweets. They have the best cakes. You can either park out front or around the back. The staff are always very nice and helpful.

McLains has been in Waldo as long as I can remember and I'm 52. Old world pastries, rolls, cookies, brownies , cakes and cookies. This is not the place for whole wheat bread or pesto tomatoe frocaccia,. Their sweet rolls are an institution and without peer. The new owners and making a few changes and I hope they move carefully. You can't find this type of product anywhere elese in the metro area. Prices have gone up in recent years but still very far for what you get. Holidays are very crowded!

You have not tasted sweets until you have had a cake from this bakery. It has been around for many years. We always buy birthday cakes from here----even though it means driving across town to get it. Call and pre-order ---otherwise there is not always anything left to purchase.

PROS: super taste, great ingredients, fresh
CONS: a bit of a drive---but worth it
