If you think you can walk out from this place with $20 dollar per person, I will probably suggest you to go to a burger joint.

I wish I could say this place is great and St. Louis has a great place for Dim Sum and authentic Chinese cuisine. But I cannot. Every visit brings another set of problems that wittles away at my ability to recommend this restaurant.

A good place for Dim Sum in St Louis. I love their pineapple custard bun. But, it's suspicious when they don't tell you how much each item cost. You are at the mercy of the cashier who just pounds on her calculator and then writes down

I have found some cheap customers come to a best restaurant and don't want to tip or complain this or other. I advise those customer do not go to good restaurant for good food and don't want to pay for that. Especially for those cheap

I just had an unfortunate experience at lulu??s, so bad in fact I have to write this in hopes that something positive can result for the restaurant and potential customers in the future. First of all, I am a local native Chinese, and have in fact had a nice time here during a past visit. But, now after seeing a very similar review, it seems a new waitress at the restaurant threatens their reputation. This evening, we had a large dinner party of 4 kids and 4 adults. When placing the tip on the table, this incredibly unprofessional and rude waitress actually began asking for more. Albeit, the amount was about 10% at that instant, however the other adult couple had not yet put in. This type of behavior ?. from a service worker? How is it possible that Lulus management can not see what irreparable damage this will do to their reputation as a dining establishment? And on top of this, I went to the front desk and one of the co-owners (after I personally gave 2 waiters and 1 waitress who actually serviced our table 5 bucks each, I was told by a waitress that he was the husband of the owner ) actually threatened to charge my credit card extra! He said the waitress had to support her family (well, who doesn't? Besides, it's irrelevant here, she was demanding more tips from me, I wonder why she did not ask from the other 2 adults on my table for more tips, I have already put in my own portion) and he was going to charge a higher percentage of tips to my credit card This is absolutely fraudulent and incredibly unprofessional. I cannot recommend Lulus after this, and would say a visit there is at your own risk. You can see the trend in the reviews. It is sad that a once pleasant atmosphere to dine in and have a reasonably authentic meal has turned into this?.Lulus needs to make some changes. Unfortunately, attitudes like that, from ownership right down to the wait staff, illustrates to me that it may be quite some time, if ever, the situation at Lulus will improve. I wish them the best, and to anyone who tries to have a pleasant dining experience here, I can only wish you luck but consider yourself warned.

All in all, It was a waste of time and money to dine at Lulu seafood restaurant. I do not recommend this restaurant to anyone. The smell of their bathroom was all over the dining area this evening when we were there.

PS:in response to the 5/24 reply that a worker had been dismissed, this seems to indicate that the ownership themselves are consistently hiring with poor judgment, or worse, re-hiring the very same waitress that causes these issues?

I really love this places dim sum but I don't think I will be going here anymore. Mostly because of some old fat waitress with short hair. She spent a great deal of time trying to tell me how much her tip should be and was very very rude about it. Time for this place to fire and hire some new workers.

I've been hearing about Lulu's for years... so I finally decided to try their "legendary" dim sum service on saturdays...

Beware - There are no menus or prices visible when you arrive for Dim Sum day...

There are dozens of staffers roaming about with trays full of small plated food items and you can't help but think it's buffet-style pricing... Sort of a "eat all you want" kind of atmosphere...

BEWARE - They use "shrimp" in 80% of their items... But I'm allergic to shrimp, so this was meaningless to me. My wife loves shrimp, however, and literally gagged when she tried Lulu's. It's not REALLY shrimp, like you're expecting... It's ultra shredded/pulverized shrimp bits mixed with some sort of gelatin/paste like substance to give it volume. So all of the dim sum choices are this nasty "shrimp-like" substance.

We tried the seaweed salad (disgusting, coated with pickled juice), the sticky rice (even more awful, as its over cooked with a bad odor, wrapped in dirty leaves), calamari (chewy, overcooked, over-fried), and potstickers (bland).

We also ordered a plate of some sort of noodles, but did not like that either.

The staff made NO apology for their food tasting bad, nor would they remove it from the bill even though we didn't eat it.

No one actually speaks coherent English here (perhaps they pretend not to...) They just smile and nod as if they understand, but they absolutely do NOT know what you're saying if you ask a complicated question like, "What's in this?"

Oh, and if you've heard, how "cheap" their dim sum day is, you've heard wrong. For this selection of food (that we only ate 10% of) they charged us $50!

When we complained, the manager literally laughed as if I told her a knock-knock joke. This suggests to me they either don't care, or had absolutely no idea what I was saying.

Now's probably a good time to mention that I had to use their filthy restroom mid-meal to purge what little food I'd tried.
In short, we will NEVER return to Lu Lu's, and hope that this review prevents others from making the mistake we did.

I can't imagine anyone actually thinking this place is good.. except perhaps homeless people who are used to drinking rain water, gum off the street, and moldy bread found in dumpsters. If that's the case, Lulu's would get a favorable review.

Generous portions, distinct high-quality authentic Chinese fare

Pros: Simply the best Chinese food in St Louis

Cons: May not be the best service when they are extremely busy

.

I rated 3 stars based on one 5-star visit and one 1-star visit. in reading the other reviews I get the impression that you have to visit Lu Lu on a good day. That was our experience. We visited Lu Lu twice a couple of years ago. On our first visit the food was very good, the best I have had in St. Louis. The second time it was strictly mediocre. We haven't been back since because there are several nearby Chinese restaurants with lower prices and dependably decent food.

I take my family to LuLu's at least once a month. They have extremely fresh vegetables, perfectly cooked rice, and even when they are busy they seem to get the food out in a reasonable amount of time. This is our favorite chinese restaurant. In fact, we drive from Webster Groves to University City just to get what we consider the most authentic food around.

I work at LuLu's Seafood Restaurant and I just wanted to respond to what the previous commenter had to say.

I honestly don't think you have any idea about what your talking about.
All tips go into a jar which is then all evenly split at the end of the shift.
We do it this way because during dim sum there is no one specific waitress. Instead you have like 12 different people serving you at a time. Plus not only are the workers paid decently hourly, they also recieve the fair share of tips, and take home all the left over food.

Also, this is a family business. 70% of the workers at LuLu's are family and working to get by and keep the restaurant moving.

if you think the management is hoarding money for themselves, think again, in fact the owners of lulu's would rather suffer losing money for the month then ever underpaying their workers.

Our food is wonderful, our chefs are genuine and our staff, all of our staff is like our family.

I love the family that LuLu's creates... and the great authentic food that they serve.

I ate at this restaurant. I thought the food was very good. I was disappointed when I learned that the waitresses are not allowed to keep their tips. I thought this was very unfair because each of these girls work 12 days and work very hard. They should be allowed to keep their own tips; instead the tips are kept for the manager to enjoy.

We went to Lulu's for New Year's eve dinner last night. 30 minutes after we were seated, no one came to take orders. It was 630pm.So i stopped a waitress and told her and we arrived earlier than any of the other tables and they've already had people taking their orders.she said: we will tell the kitchen to make your food first. We waited for another 20 minutes, finally i approached the girl who took us to our table 40 minutes ago,she was busy serving "alcohol drinks" to other tables who arrived later than us.They make probably 3bucks out of each bottled beer). She saw me approaching her and told me: just a sec in Chinese. At that point, we have been there for more than 50 minutes and we thought we should leave before the kids started to complain loudly. i asked for the check, we stood up and a man (apparently the boss who of course looked like a butcher with an oily and fatty face saw us leaving and asked me. All he worried was his money. I asked for the check again loudly, they could not give me one because no one came to take my orders,so I explained to him :no one took our orders give me the check for the tea and i wont leave any money for tip.The girl came by and asked for 2 dollars for the tea.I left 2 dollars on the table, guess what, the girl who I requested to take my order for the food earlier but did not take our orders took the money away immediately. I just thought that was pathetic,if you are wanting to have some nice food with decent prices and decent service, I really do not recommend you to use Lulu's. Another thing I have to mention here, the girl who showed us to the seat earlier that night ( she told me her name was xiao shu,she once told me that their Kitchen use lots of MSG in their food which is bad especially for kids, she said MSG is the type of chemical product d that makes the food taste fresh. Its really your own choice to make to either stay healthy or unhealthy. My group and I were over charged on tips. We went to Lu Lu yesterday, 1/27/08. They over charges everyone indivdual tips for a group dinner. Each one of us ends up paying $16 tips for a $29 per person group dinner. The waitress was very confused on her calculations of the tips. We had to wait for our deserts because they forget to bring the cookies to us. We also had to wait for the drink. They had us sit for about 15 mins before serving us.

This restaurant has some of the best chinese food I've found, in either the US or China. I ate there with my wife and her chinese parents. The food was up to their standards, and that's definitely saying something. We had a supper, where the spicy/sweet fresh fish was the best fish dish I've ever had. Another dish of stir-fried fingerling eels was superb. We've also had the dim sum there - all of the dishes were excellent. The various deep-fried rolls were more flavorful that any dimsum I've been to in Chicago.

This restaurant stands head and shoulders above any other Chinese restaurant at which I've ever eaten. The food is terrific; fresh, distinctive, authentic and utterly addicting. The wait staff is helpful and friendly, and the service is wonderful. The crispy salty peppered tofu and the crispy eggplant are our very favorite dishes.

The quality of dim sum is just a couple of notches below what you can find in San Francisco or New York. However, the price is too high. $2.95 for 4 pieces of "har gow" (shrimp dumpling) is just too much. My party consisted of 3 adults and 1 child (10) and our bill was $62. Yes, $62! During our visit, we had har gow, char siu bao, lai yau bao, salt/pepper shrimp, salt/pepper calamari, shrimp cheung fun, lo my gai, turnip pudding and stir-fry green beans. We thoroughly enjoyed the stir-fry green beans, har gows and baos. If you can handle the price, Lulu is a good place. The service is friendly and decor is nice.

The service isn't all that bad and the food is great. If you are going to eat here, just try ordering food that looks good when they are pushing the carts around and the food that doesn't look good, don't get it.

Dim Sum is served over the weekends and is the best I've had since being in Hong Kong. Regular menu dishes are also more authentic cuisine, not exactly Americanized so you may not like the taste. I highly recommend the Dim Sum and the smoked duck dishes.

To summarize:
The service is terrible:
The food is worse than many Chinese buffets.
The atmosphere might be all right if they do not send you to the basement.
I would never go or recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Waited over 1 hour for drinks, and food was overcooked and unedible.
