.

Since moving to Japan in 2006, I have been using the internet to purchase many of things I can't obtain here. Recently I needed a pair of hiking boots and decided to use Patriot Surplus. That was an unfortunate decision. They rank in my mind as the worst online purchasing experience I have had to date. Poor or non-existent customer service response to e-mails, little or no knowledge of the products they claim to be selling, misleading information, long delays in shipping, and finally an unsatisfactory return policy.

I ordered my boots in early September, after much enquiry regarding the correct size for me. In short, my normal size is never over 12 U.K. and I was told by a Patriot Surplus representative that size 14 U.S. would correspond to a size 12 U.K. in the boots I was ordering. Well I received my boots after a long delay on the 5th of November and they were the wrong size. On the inside of the boots was a size tag which read 14 U.S./ 13.5 U.K. It was clear to me that whoever had advised me on size had no access to either viewing the actual boots or contacting someone who could. Maybe they were sitting in a small office somewhere in India - who knows?

Anyway, then began the long chore of trying to contact Patriot Surplus to organise a return and exchange. Although the company claims to answer e-mails within 1-2 working days, it was regularly taking over a week to get a reply from them - replies which were usually short and without sufficient detail.

Finally, they agreed to exchange my boots but have completely stopped responding to my e-mails regarding who will be responsible for the cost of return and re-shipping. It is now 5 months since my original order, and I have received no acknowledgement of the original mistaken advice regarding boot size, and I am still hiking in my sneakers. Patriot Surplus seems to think that if they just ignore me, I will go away. If you want my advice, don't buy from this company...oh and don't bother trying to call them on the toll-free number - there is never any answer, and the glossy page is all full of links that don't actually work - try their "facebook" link for example. Buyers beware.
