Thankfully they kept the original bread after taking over the company. Be sure to call if you intend to go, they have very short hours. The rye bread is the best I have ever tasted and can be found at Soulard Market.

The Black Bear took a St. Louis tradition and made it even better. They kept some of the breads from the previous establishment and added some of their own receipes. This bakery is run as a cooperative and all breads are made from natural sources. I have never tried a type of bread from Black Bear that I didn't like! The only downfall is that they are only open on Thursday and Friday at their store.

Black Bear Bakery took over Lickhalter's which was a St. Louis tradition; they kept many of their recipes including their rye, which is really the best in town. The pumpernickel and Sorghum multi-grain are also excellent. They are only open at their store front on Thursdays and Fridays, and have a stall st Soulard. You really can't miss this locally made, all-natural bread made by a collectively-run bakery.
