I ate there for the first time after the Martin City St. Patrick's Day Parade. I ordered a burger and it was the biggest, thickest I have ever seen. So yummy! All fresh meat. A few others at our table had baked potatoes...GIGANTIC. The Van Noy family is doing it right! They know their regulars well, that was apparent. I will definitely eat there again.

Jess and Jim's is a hidden treasure in Kansas City. I had lived here for almost two years before I found this great restaurant. If you go, I would recommend their cheeseburger if you're looking for something simple. Order a steak if you want the best steak you've ever had! The lunch prices were very reasonable. The best service around!

A family member from St Louis told me they had the best steak in there life here. So when we had a opportunity to be in K C, we had to try it.

A little out of the way for where we were staying.
Steaks were very good, not out best ever...
they are not grilled with hash marks but put on the grill so the carmelization is over the entire side. I suppose it keeps in juices, but makes the meat more crusty than we are used to.

The waitress brought my husband the wrong steak and did not notice it till he told her. She did not appear to be brand new there, I would think they would check thier orde before bringing it out, good wait staff always do.

so they cooked him another fairly promptly, but I was 1/2 done by time he got his.

Salad was pretty generic, but ok.

Seems like there's too many good places to eat to go back, I assume KC has some truely great steak places, just not this one.

Cons: not special enough to go back

Absolutely the top Steak House in Kansas City. It's out of the way unless you live near Grandview, but I would drive the distance anytime to savor the best steak you can buy, cooked to perfection, and served with a smile.

Expect a crowd and be prepared to wait for this delicious, served on a sizzling platter hunk of Angus Beef.

The prices are high compared to most steak houses ($19 to $40), but this is no ordinary steak house. Make the trip to Martin City and tickle your taste buds!

We were new to the KC area, and asked where to go for steak. We were told Jess & Jim's was a KC tradition, so we went there, expecting a treat. We were completely underwhelmed! I think this place may have been great in the distant past, but I think now they must be living off their reputation. Otherwise, I can't understand why anyone would give this place such high ratings. The steak was not special at all, and we paid way, way too much. We won't be going back.

If you are in the area its a fun place to try.Off the beaten path a bit. A good place to eat and relax.A very down home style to the place. I was excited about the steak. It was definitely tender and flavorful, but my at least a quarter of the steak was fat. I spent some time trimming it. The baked potatoes are definitely one of a kind, but overkill for me with cheese, bacon and a ridiculous amount of butter piled on. The prices range 20-40$ per steak so it is definitely not cheap.

Took our son and his wife there as we had coupons. It was still pricey but delicious! We all had great steaks - tender and cooked to perfection. Also, we've never seen beets as an appetizer but it's a great idea if you like them, and I do! Definitely worth the trip as it is sort of out of the way.

I wouldn't say this place is terrible by any means, but I do agree that it does not live up to its hype. My rib-eye was a good-sized portion, but lacking in flavor. The ambience is that of a mountain lodge - which is great if we had been in the mountains - but it's Missouri. As stated in the subject line... It's okay, but don't drive out of your way to get there; if you're driving through though, give it a shot.

It's a bit of a drive from downtown or OP but the food is very good, nothing pretensious here, if your looking for that look elsewhere, just a great steak cooked perfectly and served with a HUGE baked potato.
Expect to wait a bit if you go on a Friday or Saturday night
but usually the wait is no longer than 30 mins.

One of the reasons I don't go to Outback to get a steak is because of their choice of cooking methods. Jess& Jim's servers their steak the same way, pan seared or flat top grill most likely. However, the steak comes out hot ready to rock with a man size potatoe. Everytime I'm there I just know that I have to have the 30 oz Porterhouse!

Service is decent, sometimes it can be a wait but its worth it, never really been disappointed. I like to get there early evening have a few drinks, enjoy the crowd and chat, wait for my steak. The place has this really down home feeling to it that you would expect from the midwest and no where else, but the wait staff all though sometimes old, are kind and humorus.

If you want a big ol' steak home- style its Jess&Jim's.

If you don't mind a train buzzing past several times during your meal and a place that looks a bit outdated, then the ambiance is fine. The filet I ordered did not taste high quality and was not cooked correctly. The service was mediocre.

Not worth the trip. It's a good half-hour drive from the dowtown/plaza area to this outdated, unimaginative steakhouse. My feeling is, if you're going to spend this kind of money, it would be better spent somewhere else. For example, your dinner salad is presented in a lovely plastic bowl, filled with ice berg lettuce, a plentiful helping of your choice of dressing (of which Thousand Island is one of your choices), and a few chunks of tomato wedges. WOW. For this steakhouse to be ranked among KC's best, is a joke and an embarassment.

It has been 2+ years since I ate there, I live in Califorinia. I have been able to eat at Jess & Jims a few times, but everytime was a plesant experience. My native california wife thought she had good steaks before, but when she ate a steak at Jess & Jims she was suprised.

The food is first rate, and quantities are huge (went with family) and got the family meals. The large bowl of vegatables, the huge potatoes, the biscuits and gravy. Dessert?!? Not possible, probably will need to-go containers for the leftovers.

Hi, I have always looked forward to a trip to Kansas City to see mt friend, Eileen. She and her husband Robert have always taken us there for special occasions. The steak is out of this world. You can tell the food is excellent because no matter when you go there there is always a large crowd. They DO take care of you though, with leading you to the bar for a cocktail. We have a lot of happy memories about Jess and Jims. I would highly recommend it to anyone. yours truly, Bonnie Brown

On a trip to the K.C. area we decided to look up Jess and Jim's, who we were told had great food. As a resident of Omaha, we have our share of poor, average, and good places to eat. Driving three hours to shop, and anticipating a memorable steak dinner, alas, we were treated to rather ordinary restaurant food, average beef, and average service. We would have done much better at a chain steak house and not have had to drive to the netherlands of K.C.. Two hours later we're looking for a McDonald's!!! Let's hope they had a bad day, but, its too far to drive to to give it another chance, we'll give another K.C. steak house a chance to impress us!

Jess and Jim's seems to be living on the reputation of its former owners who made it one of the top 3 steakhouses in America. Current owners do not manage it closely enough. On any given night you could get a BAD steak. Our last trip, 3 of us got bad steaks, really bad ones too in that ALL three had so much gristle they were not fit to eat and two of three were over-cooked but the joint was too busy and too many kiddies screaming to mess with a complaint. Until then, I always had great experiences at J & J. Since, I've heard others complaining too. Not sure if its worth the drive back on a reprieve or not.

Our dining experience at Jess and Jims was one of the worst I have ever, ever encountered. We took a large party for a special event. We waited 40 minutes to order our food. It took another 45 minutes for our cold steaks to arrive. The potatoes tasted like they had been cooked a week ago. I'll never go back. There are much better places to eat steak in KC... don't waste your time or money.

These guys are not in the same ballpark as the Golden Ox. They used to be great and our friends and us spent literally thousands of dollars there. The wait staff is professional but familiar and won't let you leave without smiling. The steaks are perfection and they will actually cook "well done" for you without grimacing.

Pros: good food, prompt service

Cons: come early or wait, far to drive
