I have lived in this area of the greater Kansas City area for 16 yrs. I can count on 1 hand how many times I've been to Richards Sunfresh. The prices are overly high, the selection is little to none, & the customer service is the WORST!!! Everyone is correct the teenagers stand around and talk to each other like you aren't even there and if they aren't talking to each other they are texting and they don't hide it either. Its just not the teenagers the adults that should be better leaders to the young people working probably there 1st jobs and I hope they don't think that is how you can act at a "real" job. I'd rather go to Price Chopper on 291 & 23rd you can find 98% of anything you want, prices are good, & people that work there are a lot nicer. I plan my shopping on my way home from work to avoid having to ever go in Richards Sunfresh.

There are some positives about Richard's - convenience, they participate in the community, long-term adult employees are good, good prices on sale items, always plenty of registers open.

However, their produce quality is poor. It would probably be better if they could treat their produce section more like a farmer's market and set themselves apart by providing lots of local produce instead of just a little. Also, their regular prices are outrageous. I have priced items and I have regularly paid 30-50% more to shop at Richard's. I do this for convenience when I need something in a hurry, but I hate paying the 'convenience" store prices. Finally, it is nice to have registers open, but most (not all) of the young people that work the front end are standing around engaged in conversation. I get rang up and someone always begrudgingly offers to carry out my groceries. But most of the time I feel like I am paying such ridiculous prices to pay the wages of employees who are doing nothing. I would rather sack my own groceries than to see all of these kids jacking around when I shop. Also, they do not take internet coupons which are how many people get their coupons these days.

I drive the distance it takes to Wal-Mart Supercenter to do my regular shopping. I am not a fan of the giant store, but they will match ads, take internet coupons, and even if I wait in line, my cashier is usually friendly, engages in conversation with me, and still does a good, fast job of packing my groceries. I know that Richard's cannot compete with Wal-Mart prices all the time, but it's very difficult to justify shopping at Richard's when a short drive every couple of weeks is much more pleasant and less expensive.

It's time to change it up, guys. Your whole way of doing things needs a makeover.

Richards SunFresh seems to think that because they are the only supermarket in this part of Independence that they don't have to be competitive. The customer service people are rude and unfriendly. Produce is low quality and they have a poor selection. The meat cutter is rude and they charged me to cut up a fryer which Price Chopper does not do.
It is worth driving the extra distance to another supermarket.

Sunfresh is an awful place. They treat their employees poorly. People say they need new help. That's B.S. They need to treat their current help like people. There's a reason no one is smiling. The back room is dirty. They repackage everything over and over again until it is "noticeably" spoiled. The workers do other horrible things to your food because they hate the company and they want you to as well. (Oh and the rating is obviously sarcasm)

Business Response:

Confused I do believe you have some confusion going on here. Besides the fact that you sound like an ex-employee, a disgruntled one at that who most likely was released from employment, I think you are confusing the movie "Waiting...." with our business. If ANY of this behavior was happening, we would be shut down by the city. The Health Department comes through our store quite often, and none of this have ever been mentioned, and believe me it would have been. We are a family-owned business, and as such take pride in our names and reputations. This behavior would put a stain on it like no other, and does NOT happen or get condoned. We have many employees that have worked with us for over 10 years, some closer to 20. If this were a true 'review', they likely would not have been here that long. I invite people to come and see for themselves however, and judge us that way. Not from an anonymous ex-employee 'review'.

I moved to this area 5 years ago and thought I would enjoy having a grocery store that is locally owned close to my home. They do not match other grocery stores ads. Every time I am in I can never find fresh produce and the prices are high. The customer service assosciates are always in a bad mood and never want to help. I have given this store multiple chances and I try to avoid the store at all costs. I would rather drive 25 minutes to LIberty and shop at Wal-Mart. At least I would have some smiling faces welcome me in the store. Richards needs to look at going back to basics and taking care of the customers right now. Need to ad match walmart, hyvee, and price chopper in this tough economy. Richards needs to hire some new help with some new smiling faces that have a positive attitude towards customers.

I had the same experience - the chicken tasted like it was fried with fish or they used the same oil. I believe their quality has gone down recently.

I have purchased fried chicken for years at Richard's Sun Fresh, the last couple of months the quality has been poor. Dried old tasting and today it tasted as if the chicken had been fried with fish. I'm done waisting my money!

We shop there occasionally because it is close to home. Prices are reasonable but higher than larger outlets and they don't always have things that the larger stores do. We buy meat there but only the higher end organic stuff and produce quality can be spotty if you don't pick through the selection but when we've got a bad selection we've never had a problem taking something back for exchange. The staff is typically very helpful and friendly. It gets the extra star, bringing it to a 4 star rating because of convenience.

I moved to Independence from Colorado. I love this hometown grocery store. All the employees are very helpful and friendly. The store is always stocked nicely and the deli food is delicious. I would highly recommend this store to newcomers in town!!

After shopping at Richard's Sunfresh for many years we were asked to leave today. My husband is a Vietnam Veteran and believes strongly in our amendments that our soldiers in the past, present, and future are fighting for. Including the right to bear arms, which means open carrying. He has opened carry many times in the past in the store, which I can say there is no sign stating no weapons allowed. A man came from the storeroom and informed my husband that he was not allowed to be there. It was my husband, my six year old daughter, and myself. When we said we would shop somewhere else he stated, "fine". I refuse to shop at Richards Sunfresh since they do not believe in our United States Constitution.
