If another joint was serving what's served here, I'd probably give them 5 stars, and it's still hands down better than Gates, but I miss the Arthur Bryant's Barbeque of the 70's & early 80's. Back then there were giant sized servers with giant sized hands on the school like cafeteria line. These giant servers would throw down a big sheet of butcher paper, tossing on a slice of white bread, covering it with their giant sized handfuls of the meat of your choice (Mine was always mutton - which sadly is no longer on the menu!). They'd sauce it up with the savory, vinegary sauce of your choice - or none- then top it with another slice of white bread, add a giant handful of fries, then wrap it all up in the paper. You'd carry the precious package to one of the long community style tables & unwrap the giant ball of sandwich/fries/meat & sauce. It was the juiciest meat & best peppery, vinegary sauce anywhere in KC. . . alas, Arthur is long gone as is the mutton & the other consistently juicy, perfectly smoked meats. It's still worth a visit now and then. . . but I think Arthur took some of the secrets with him to BBQ heaven.

This was, by far and away, the most disappointing barbecue experience I've ever had. What makes it worse is that I read all of the bad reviews listed below and thought they must be knit-picking or overreacting. Turns out every bad review on this page was absolutely, spot-on accurate. The ribs were overcooked and dry--obviously victims of neglect--and I had far better burnt ends at the Royals game. Clearly this place is resting on its laurels. They don't seem to care at all about their product which is really shocking for such an institution. Please, I implore you, don't make the same mistake I did. Arthur Bryant's is overpriced and just plain bad barbecue. I'm befuddled as to how there could be a positive review here, or anywhere for that matter. Instead, check out Fiorella's Jack Stack Barbecue. It's a bit more upscale (I was actually disappointed that it lacked the classic barbecue joint feel), but, unlike Arthur Bryant's. they actually know how to prepare barbecue.

Run, Don't walk when going to Arthur Bryant's. There sooner you get in, the sooner you can get in line. Just the right amount of time to make up your mind with all the barbecue choices. \n\nHere's a tip: Do you want to know what to order? Just look around you and you will see what the other s have ordered. You can ask them what they ordered and how they like it. The people are very friendly.\n\nI ordered the rib tips with fries. My plate was overflowing with ribs and fries. The ribs were cooked very good. Uhmm, uhmmmm!!!! Put some Sweet Hot Sauce, Uhmm, uhmm!!! I can't wait to get back.

I've been to the Arthur Bryant's on 18th @ Brooklyn twice about 2 years apart, and wasn't impressed either time.

Although cooked to tenderness, there was very little smoke flavor on any of the meats- I had pork, ribs and brisket.

The sauce is weird; lots of vinegar and thyme in the original, and the other two sauces are completely forgettable.

On top of it all, you have to yell your order through little holes in a glass partition at people who you can't understand and who can't understand you. Plus they seem to be rather cranky and irritated that you're even there.

For good barbecue, go to any of the Lockhart, TX restaurants- they put appropriate smoke on their meat, and don't require some funky sauce to make a decent meal out of it. Plus, they're friendly!

I ordered a full pork ribs for carryout at Speedway location. It was meatless, dry, extremely hard to chew and seriously overcooked. I called the restaurant and spoke with the owner. He was one of the rudest person in the world. He never apologized and blamed me not bringing the food back to them. He told me he had no solution for me.\n\nI definitely would not go there any more. Consider the $20 bucks I spent there blown in the wind.\n\nTrust my words. Don?t go there to waste your hard earned money. There are many real good BBQ in KC!\n

Was extremely disappointed with our visit. Cashier was rude, bus boy was friendly but wouldn't leave us alone, overpriced food, meat was fatty, sauce was horrible. Called the manager/owner today to share our experience and he kept making snide remarks so I told him it didn't sound like he cared and he said 'well I don't care'. WOW, no wonder the staff there has the attitudes that they do, with a boss like that! Save your time and money ... go to KC Masterpiece!

Most unique BBQ in the world. Since 1970's I have eaten BBQ all over the USA with just one goal. Fine a place better then this one and after 30 plus years I still have to say, if I could only have just 1 place for the rest of my life this would be the one. The sauce is what it is. The sauce is like nothing you can get anywhere else. It is so unique that you might not even like it, but I love it and it compares to none other in the world. The smokey meats are no better or worse then any other great bbq but that sauce seals the deal. Kansas City has the best bbq in the country. Not, Memphis, Texas, or NC. Prove it to yourshelf. Try L.C.'S or Oklahoma Joes or Woodyard or Winslow's or Florella's Jack Stack or Filling Station or my other 2 favorites Holy Smoke BBQ Co. in Lee's Summit, Mo. or Wabash BBQ in Excelsior's Spring, Missouri. All of the above and many others will be the most delicious, fabulous, scrumptious, mouth watering que in the entire United States of America. Kansas City wins it all. I consider my self a Connoisseur of BBQ and love Arthur Bryant's BBQ.

Born and raised in K C. live in Nashville and miss Arthur Bryant's
I always get mine without the sauce and put Gates sauce on it.
Thats a good way to go, if you have not gotten used to the taste of the sauce. You have plenty of food for the price

Arthur Bryant's is the best BBQ I have ever tasted! Yes the decor is not even close to the lavish restaurants that you find on the Plaza but I think that is what makes it even better. When I think of BBQ I don't think of chandeliers and fancy table settings but I think of messy down home eating. The sandwiches will leave you wishing you only ate half!

My wife and I split a whole slab of ribs and had gift certificate money left over for a bottle of sauce! We both gravitated toward the Rich & Spicy sauce (President's Choice) over the Original and Sweet Heat. The ribs were grilled, not smoked, so that threw me off a little. I do prefer smoked, but can't wait to go back and try more menu items! The place (we went to the original location) probably hasn't changed much over the decades; there's a big window/counter in the back separating the cooks/servers and grill from the customers. Photos of celebrities and close friends adorned the main wall, including Danny Glover, Steven Spielburg, and President Jimmy Carter (hence President's Choice). We grabbed a table near the front door and tucked into our ribs. I am really looking forward to a return visit.

\r\nThis is not a fancy joint, it's on a street with prett much no other stores around it. It's only a couple blocks away from the 18th and Vine Jazz scene which is nice. The place is quite honestly a little grungy but that's totally cool with me. You get in through this metal door and there are a bunch of square tables and people that eat there just seem down to earth. There are at all times 3 workers running around and cleaning up the place so the tabes are pretty clean and it may seem busy but tables open up fast. You stand in line and there are 3 windows you can order food from. I loved the menu, it's so freaken simple. You can beef, sausage, chicken, ribs and then some sides like fries and baked beans. There is a 10oz beer and a mug you can get and of course soda. Wonderbread is the staple, thy will ask you whether you want it to go or for here, then whether you want dry (with the sauce or without the sauce), fries or baked beans on the side. I got the 2 meat combo, ribs and beef. I'm not much of a pork guy so it would have been nice if they had beef ribs. I got no sides but got the beer. There were a lot of regulars in line because they all knew the people that worked there. I went on a Friday nite and it wasn't too busy at all. \r\n\r\nThe beef sandwitch was amazing, honestly the best I ever had. The ribs were really good too, very delicious. The sauce was interesting, it seemed very simple but tasted great. It's a vinegary, salty red sauce with a good number of spices. If you don't order it at the window there is always plenty on your table along with ketchup.

I live in Florida, but at least once a year me and my parents go to KC and eat at Arthur Bryant's. Obviously not just for it, but our trip is incomplete without it. My entire family besides immediate live in KC, and me and my uncle and grandma and cousins LOVE to go there after we get out of the plane or to the house if we drive. I highly reccomend this. Its the absolute best BBQ I know. They give you all the bread, sauces, and pickles you want, and the meat is amazing. It is a little pricey, but completely worth it. LOVE YOU ARTHURS!

Arthur Bryant's BBQ is the most frequent recommendation when someone wants barbecue. I thought it was good, but over-rated. You order at the counter like at a fast food place, then sit at drab tables in a room of boring decor. If you are a BBQ fan and just want to eat lunch and go you won't mind. They pile it on high. You don't leave hungry.

Bryants has a Barbeque sauce that some may have to acquire a taste for, but it is one of my favorites. It is a bit gritty and has a good bite to it. The sauce is proudly displayed in 5 gallon water bottles in the West-facing front windows, basking in the afternoon sun. It can be purchased at most large grocery stores in town.

Don't expect to be able to eat an entire sandwich unless you have an unusually large appetite. The meat is piled so high that you can't get your mouth around it. I highly recommend the beef sandwich, but all of the meat is smoked to perfection.

The line moves quickly even during the lunch rush. The prices are a little high, but that is offset by the sheer volume of food you receive.

You'll find that U.S. Presidents have visited this restaurant, and for good reason.

It was good atmosphere, exactly what you would expect for a bbq joint. But I wasn't that impressed with the BBQ itself. I especially didn't like the original bbq sauce. I much prefer Danny Edward's.

Awesome awesome BBQ. I regularly drive 150 miles just to eat at AB's. Of course, 18th and Brooklyn is the only one to visit. The portions are absolutely ridiculous, you WILL be sick if you eat it all. I usually eat there just before leaving town, then enjoy cruise control all the way home. Then it's nap time. For the best and the most Q for your buck, I highly recommend AB's.

hmmm, how can I convey my life long true love for arthur bryant's!?\r\nMy tummy is getting grumbly just thinking about it.\r\nI go in and get my order to go. I'll get the burnt ends and fries\r\n\r\nwhich comes with the sweet sauce. They will throw it on the burgundy\r\n\r\ntake out paper, add the wonderfully stark white wonder bread, yell\r\n\r\nout ""pickles"" and with a nod from me the drooling customer, toss on\r\n\r\nabout 2 cups of them, and smush it all together and seal with a\r\n\r\nyellow bryants sticker. mmmm.\r\nSmuch the fries you say, (gasp) now why would any self respecting\r\n\r\nhuman do such a thing! Something magical happens when you seal the\r\n\r\nbbq and leave it its devices. The bread gets all smushy and melds\r\n\r\nwith the sauce and burnt ends. The fries get in on the action on the\r\n\r\nside and you get these amazing bites of soggy fry and bread and meat\r\n\r\nwonderment.\r\n*drool.\r\nwell, now that i have fullly tortured myself 2 thousand miles away,\r\n\r\nplease do take my recommendation to heart and ENJOY!!!\r\neat a fry for me.

One diner gets in line...The other gets a table - It's pure joy on Brooklyn Ave ...Whatever the size of the line...Just wait! You won't be sorry. Incredible Beef Brisket and Ribs.....Legitimate fresh cut fries, too. Bring your appetite. Just an amazing BBQ experience. You'll see people dressed to the nine's standing in line with people barely dressed. They're all there for the same thing...To enjoy perhaps this Country's best ""Q""

The sausage has changed in the last year, no longer like an italian style sausage, now some type of sliced sausage. I now have to go elsewhere when craving a bbq sausage sandwitch, The BBQ beef sandwich is still the best in KC, nice tender juicy meat and that gritty sauce that makes it unique. \n\nThe old sausage was better!

This place takes the cake, or the sauce as it were. Of all the amazing barbeque joints in KC this is the best. Nothing except meat that has been smoked for ages, fries that induce a heart attack on sight and sauce that is good enough to eat with nothing except the bread you grab from open bags in the cafeteria line. You haven't been to KC until you have eaten at the Original Arthur Bryant's at 18th and Brooklyn.

i'm a native to KC, MO and i've been all over the U.S. and never found anything that can stand up to the excellent flavor that Bryants BBQ has to offer.. mayve it's the sauce or the old building where all the food has been smoked for decades...what ever it is, i will continue to go back until i'm and old raggady women. :D

livingon reputation, even though the family is no longer around to uphold it- o.k. for a trip through memory lane and to enjoy the humongous order of fries- if you want real KC BBQ then head out to any of a dozen other joints for a better meal.

Pros: tradition, fries

As a Kansas City native, I can honestly say that Author Bryants deservers to be at the top of any list of Kansas City's BBQ joints. The simple reasons that make Author Bryants famous are unchanged since its opening. From it's pit fired meat served in large proportions, to the renowned sauce, to it's dive atmosphere, Author Bryants embodies Kansas City BBQ and should be at the top of anyone's ""to do"" list when visiting Kansas City. The simple fact is, Author Bryant's is Kansas City's best BBQ. \n\nTed Leeper \nSaint Louis Missouri

Every KC barbeque review I've read has Arthur Bryant's at the top of the list and I will never understand why. I lived in KC for 27 years and ate at Bryant's once. If Bryant's isn't the worst barbeque in the country it has to be in the top two. And the service.... it's as if they think you should feel honored they're serving you at all!!! I believe all the hype has really gone to their heads. They believe they can treat customers and the food any way they want. Just because Presidents have eaten there doesn't guarantee good food!!

We heard such great things about the BBQ, but the meat was really fatty. The sauce is spicy, I prefer a sweet, smokey sauce.

Bryant's rules BBQ, in KC or anywhere. Don't use a fork, you'll want to grab that big brisket sandwich, slather it will the original rot-gut sauce, and just let it flow til it drips off your elbows. Then mop it all up with some of your mountain of crispy-greasy fries, and wash it down with a cold yard beer. This is the real deal. FYI - they do offer a ""sweet"" Masterpiece-style sauce now, but don't be a wimp .... get the original.

I grew up with Bryants and I love it. From the grease on the FF to huge beef sandwich! The sauce is one that you love or hate. I love it. With out a doubt one of the best BBQ joints in town.

We dropped in at midnight - the place was busy, great ambience, great food line - fries served from a heap on the counter with gloved hands. The sandwich was soooooo big - we finished it for breakfast the next day. Great food in a hole in the wall place.

We drive from St. Louis to get Arthur Bryants bar-b-q. If you do not get full with a sandwich and fries than you have a larger than usual appetite. I do only go there during the day as the neighborhood is not the best.

Just a really really cool place. Unassuming and plain but great bar-b-q. I'm happy I took my time while riding my Harley Davidson from L.A. to Milwaukee to stop by. The news about the place had spread to Sweden. Overcoming the unfriendly staff, I found the food was great. Some of the guests where real afficionados and that was part of the experience. Go there, do it - eat (but not the chicken). Buy a steak sauce with you. Do it once in life. Risk is that you won't come back.

Arthur Bryant's is THE pinnacle of BBQ mastery. Is that redundant? Well it's deserved. The food here is the reason you should make the drive from anywhere, but get a map if you're not from KC. Actually, I'm hesitant to even recomment this place, for fear that it becomes too commercial. But Arthur Bryant's pulled pork and or beef sandwiches are the best. The big-ass handful of fries they give you isn't bad, either.\n

Bryants is the undisputed ""King of BBQ"" in KC - HOWEVER, not necessarily the best. I like their sauce and think it is the best but the meat is a bit fatty. If you have not been there (and you like BBQ joints) this place is a must - definitely unique and historical and the food is great. Now, for the best smoked meats - especially the pork and chicken -my vote for the best in KC goes to Oklahoma Joes. I've eaten BBQ in KC for almost 50 years now and have tried them all - all on this list are good and worth going to - decide yourself, its all good but some are better. Have fun !

This could be the best barbecue around: KC has so many great choices. Still can't figure out what's in the sauce. Need a backpack to carry the sandwich & fries to-go. Ribs are nearly as good as Doug's in Stilwell KS.

The tradition lives on ... Old man Arthur must still be running it from heaven. Oh its not quite the same, but it still beats anything else in the world of BBQ for beef brisket sandwiches and ribs. I'm not fond of BBQ pork or turkey sandwiches anywhere & AB's is no different. AB's chicken is not the best. The sauce tends to dry it out. But AB's still cranks out the best brisket & ribs. Fries still great too. \nAtmosphere is pure Arthur Bryant's classic. For lovers of real BBQ, the atmosphere at AB's is perfect.

This place has great food. It's not fancy inside so don't expect any ambience. Expect good food and lots of it. By nice to the guy that makes your sandwich - slip him a couple bucks and you'll get a BIG sandwich and a grin!\n\nThis is a joint. It's a place where you wouldn't walk the streets alone at night nor would you wait for a bus. But you'll venture down into this older, rough neighborhood to satisfy your lust for barbecue.\n\nYa gotta have a Red Creme soda while you're there, too!

Cons: Neighborhood marginal, Not for vegetarians, Not romantic

Prompt and courteous service. Sauce needs a little more molasses and/or brown sugar; a little too close to a ketchupy taste for me. Need to either increase portions or knock a little off the prices for amount served.

While the exterior does not say much for the place, the food inside has another story to tell. This place has fabulous BBQ! The portions are HUGE for a very reasonable price. I am from NE and ate there while on an intership after it was suggested to be the best in KC! I haven't found anything better yet!

OK Bar-B-Q, but just OK. I am not sure why so many flock to this place. Must be lots of bussiness people with expense accounts. Meat is good, is not loaded down with fat. Just not as much smokey flavor as I expected. When restaurants are sold they usually get changed. This change was not an improvement. Be sure to try WannaBurger on the same block(when Bryants is too busy). I was impressed with the quality. Great Fries!

Arthur Bryant's is over rated. It has fame only because of Harry Truman. I have asked out of town visitors if they want some KC BBQ. Invariably, when the choice is Arthur Bryant's, they have been disappointed - not just one visitor but all. It's OK to have a Presidential favorite, but the best, that is overrated.
