Fantastic experience. Southern cuisine is their specialty but they have an excellent menu with variety of steaks, seafood, and regional specialties, like Po-Boys. We stopped overnight in Vicksburg and Walnut Hills was recommended by the hotel management. I had the best broiled redfish I have ever tasted. It was served on angel-hair pasta with bacon-wrapped sauteed asparagus. It was mouth watering. My husband had a beef-kabob which he raved about. We stayed over the next day to visit the national park and decided to return to Walnut Hills for their Blue Plate Special lunch. I think this must be what people are talking about great southern food. The fried chicken was without question "the world's best" as advertised and the wide variety of vegetables were delicious and obviously were prepared fresh in the kitchen. You can try them all if you sit at the roundtables, at a quite reasonable cost. We loved it and will return whenever we return to Vicksburg.

We were passing through Vicksburg for the first time and got a reference to this place. Ordinarily we're not drawn to places which feature fried chicken as their specialty but the reviews were all excellent so we thought we'd give it a try. It was well worth it.

The restaurant is located in an old house downtown which can make moving around a little tricky when it's crowded. And it was crowded when we arrived which is usually a good sign. After a short wait for which our waiter apologized we were led to a nice corner table. The waiter brought us water right away and explained that the blue plate special was the best deal and that we couldn't go wrong with the fried chicken. We ordered drinks. My wife ordered a mint julep which, according to her, was excellent. I had a locally brewed ale which was made with pecans which was also very good.

We both tried the fried chicken on the blue plate special. I opted for white meat while my wife chose dark. Several of the sides were already sold out but the remaining selections all looked good so we ordered a variety.

The chicken was the best we've ever had. The meat was moist and tender. The breading was crisp and flavorful. The sides were equally delicious. The dinner included delicious corn meal biscuits which were served piping hot and were as light as can be.

We thought we might be a little disappointed when we were told that they had run out of peach cobbler for dessert but we tried their vanilla pudding and were pleasantly surprised at how creamy it tasted and not too sweet.

The service was also excellent. Our waiter was informative and attentive and the bartender came over to ask how my wife liked her mint julep. This was when he told us that the slight delay in its delivery was due to his having to go out to pick some fresh mint in the backyard.

All in all a terrific dining experience. If we ever get back to Vicksburg we will stop by here for dinner again.

Pros: The food, the staff

Cons: None apparent

This place is hometown and serves great food! Good southern cooking is not healthy, so don't expect that but it's great! Round tables are so fun, even when there are people that you don't know sitting at your table.
