Set in the quaint town of Oxford, MS, City Grocery offers a nice (if not a little on the TOO spicy side) menu. The ambience is nice EXCEPT for the white PAPER over the white linen tablecloths. The prices are high enough, I was expecting to dine on white linen instead of white paper! The food was good, except for slightly undercooked fish and the muffins are much too spicy. Also, if you're going to have a restaurant in the deep South, you really should feature SWEET TEA! I mean, really...I can get unsweetened tea anywhere else in the country!

On a recent visit to Oxford, I asked to lunch with business associates at an old favorite from years past. I ordered the traditional shrimp and grits but asked to hold the bacon since I no longer eat pork but instead would they add a few extra mushrooms. No problem. When the waiter returned (much time later) I was given a plate OVERflowing with mushrooms. I had to search for the few shrimp underneath. Since the waiter did not check on us again until time for the check, I have to assume he was either embarrassed or in on the joke with the chef. Sorry I ever asked to alter the popular recipe and get a taste of nostalgia. It won't happen again.

City Grocery has long been my favorite place to eat in Oxford. Not only do they have amazing food, but they also have a beautiful and very classy dining space. The shrimp and grits are known all over the world but really, everything on their menu is top notch

PROS: great food, great atmosphere
CONS: pricey

Great food, best service in town, and the place to take the parents. The bar upstairs is usually crowded with law students and artsy-fartsy types, but the balcony is the best on the Square

Pros: good wine list, best Square balcony, great food

Cons: expensive, weirdos in bar
