1 Stars: TWO HOURS and NO FOOD (by by lcrawls at Citysearch)

Friday night, arrived at 8:40 and found it understandably busy. But TWO HOURS and NO FOOD. We ordered appetizers for our table of seven once we sat down, after an hour during which the staff sat people who came after us. Forty-five minutes later, still nothing. About 20 minutes after we ordered, a friend at the table called Fiamma??s, which is two doors down and ordered take-out. The ONLY food we got at Ru San??s was the Fiamma??s take-out that they brought after we??d been at Ru San??s about an hour and a half. We spent the last 20 minutes just trying to get the check for our drinks. Keep this place for lunch only, when there??s a buffet and you won??t starve. We finally left after just over two hours. The last 20 minutes, we were just trying to get our check for the drinks.

3 Stars: Good sushi at a good price (by by Epsmith at Citysearch)

This is a great place to grab some good sushi at a low price before and night out on the town or for a quick lunch. They even have a lunch buffet which is fantastic.

The two big downfalls are the service and the noise. The service is often very slow, order are often messed up and when part of a large party the bill gets all confused.

When its busy its also very loud, the pumping techno music doesn??t help a whole lot.

Overall a pretty good place.

4 Stars: Great if you want to try a lot of items (by by mochajam21 at Citysearch)

I moved here from Atlanta, where Ru San's is a staple, so I was pleasantly surprised to find out that there was one here as well. I love Ru San's because as a beginner in the sushi world, my hubby and I are able to try several items for a few dollars without feeling like we wasted our mney on something that we didn't enjoy. Some of the items are as low as $1 each. The fried rice is excellent as well. It has fresh veggies in it and it's not greasy like chinese restaurants. I would recommend this place to anyone who is new to sushi and want to explore your choices. On the weekends it can get a bit crowded and a little loud. So come early or expect to wait a little while for a table.

5 Stars: Most Fun Sushi Experience in Charlotte! (by by SpaQueen77 at Citysearch)

i can't go a week without eating at Ru Sans. Whatever I'm in the mood for - they have it! And if it's not on the menu, they will create it for you.
Plus, the lunch buffet is only $10... can't beat it!!!

5 Stars: Unique, fun, delicious sushi (by Robin C.)

I've eaten at a lot of sushi restaurants, and this one is unique. The menu is extensive (multiple pages!) and the offerings can be quite creative, including a whole selection of rolls that take at least 3 bites to finish. Servers greet patrons enthusiastically and make you feel welcome, not intimidated. Most importantly, the sushi tastes really, really good.

1 Stars: Great Sushi, HORRIBLE service! (by by flintsone at Citysearch)

The sushi at Ru SAn is wonderful, pobably the best in the area; however, the service is terrible! It is loud and chaotic and the goal is to get you to eat quicly and leave. The last and I mean the "last time I will ever eat at Ru San" we were asked to leave after only eating lunch for an hour so they could turn the table to new customers, how rude. Even thought the food is great, I will not be returning..in fact, the direct quote was "look at the door, people are waiting"...I could not believe it! We were paying customers trying to enjoy lunch.

4 Stars: food good but inconsistent; service poor (by by shleyasaur at Citysearch)

I have been to RuSans about four times, and every time the food is phenomenal. However, I have had problems with getting what I ordered and getting it in a timely manner, I believe due to language barriers. The first time I ate there, I didn't get my entree at all-I was with 5 other ladies and had to sit and watch them eat while they took FOREVER to re-order my meal. A few of my friends didn't even get what they ordered but were so hungry they didn't care. I gave the place a second chance and have been mostly satisfied, with the exception of the last time. On that occasion, I asked my waiter three times for a sweet tea and never got it-plus the calamari appetizer I ordered (usually a big plate, the stuff is $7) came on a tiny plate and look skimped.
I am recommending this place for the food, it can be damn good if you get the right thing.

5 Stars: Always a Good Time! (by Jenny S.)

Be prepared to spend a good deal of time pouring over what to order, the menu is extensive. Good idea to bring along a pen and paper to keep notes on items that catch your attention. The staff is always upbeat and helpful. The food is phenomenal. Ru San's fusion is fused whereas most other fusion in the area fizzles.

5 Stars: Best Sushi Selection I've ever seen (by by vinylspun at Citysearch)

My wife and I just went for the first time. We didn't know what to expect with the reviews since it had come so highly recommended by friends. It felt like walking into a rave (in a good way - they played some remixes of some of my favorite DJ's). I only started eating sushi a couple years ago, and I have never seen a menu with this many options for so CHEAP. Honestly, we spent more on wine and dessert than on the food and I still ate more than I usually do. It took a little while to be seated, but it was because they were packed. The wait times were told to us well ahead of time - a few minutes for seating, 20-30 minutes for food because we walked in while there were a lot of people and parties. They asked if that was ok since it was such a busy interval and were always really nice to us. The only yelling we heard was the cooks yelling "Thank You" and some other things I couldn't understand - it seemed friendly though. Honestly, super flavor on the sushi, the menu is very accurate, our wait staff was very attentive, yet gave us room to eat. It took a little while to get a bill, but like I said it was a very packed interval. I do not know if it is always a long wait, but it was completely worth it to us. We will be back for sure!!

1 Stars: Ru-sucks (by by cltbanker at Citysearch)

I hesitated to go back to this restaurant after such a terrible dining experience the first time. And I should have listened to myself. Two times in a row now I have had inexcusably bad service at this place. Our large party had an 8:30 reservation. We were all there promptly at 8:30 and were curtly told we would have to wait another 30-45 min to be seated. After the first 30 min passed, we were told it would be another 30 with no apology. I?m not fond of eating at 10:00 at night. We finally had to insist the staff seat us at a makeshift table made up of the outdoor patio seating. Look, I get it, they're busy and large parties are a pain - it's hard to seat them if no one's leaving (probably b/c they're also receiving terrible service). But if you're running and up-and-coming restaurant, you need to be in the business of accommodating large parties on a busy night. If you can't, don't promise you'll honor a reservation. We would have gladly gone elsewhere had we been told in advance it would have required an Act of Congress to get seated. More troubling was the restaurant's complete lack of concern that a party of 12 people was badly inconvenienced, hungry, and lucky to get their food before 11:00 at night. I'm not asking to have my rear end kissed. A sincere explanation and apology from the manager would have been all that was necessary. But the management was nowhere in sight and the staff could care less. I could go on and on about everything else that went wrong after we were seated, but you get the drift. It's a shame, the sushi's great. But restaurant prices are jacked up because you?re paying for the service and experience in addition to the food. And it's been a while since I've dined somewhere where the service was so consistently bad. Avoid Ru-sucks. There are better restaurants out there.

5 Stars: Cheapest $1 Maki around, and its good! (by by skeezer at Citysearch)

Yeah I agree, if you want a subtle meal stick to your home or a back alley for all I'm concerned. I love the environment there, everyone is friendly and greets you with a warm welcome when you enter and exit. Me and my girlfriend love the place and recommend it to anyone looking for an upbeat and affordable meal. Great sushi.

4 Stars: snobby rich people, dine somewhere else. (by by qchoosier at Citysearch)

Ok listen. I have read a lot of the bad reviews on this site and all of them are ridiculous. I could go on forever with rebuttal after rebuttal to your ridiculous statements, but in the essence of time I have picked some of my favorites to dissect. Here goes.

"Rusans is noisy"
Yeah, I hate it when people welcome you to the restaurant with an energetic greeting. I want a hostess with no personality to guide me to my seat as I follow like a lemming enjoying no dialogue or candid banter whatsoever. If you want somewhere to eat where its quiet, eat at home. We dont want you there sneering at people enjoying life anyways.

"The service is terrible"
Oh, I would hate to be there spending time with my friends or loved ones having extra time to converse about life, or the days events, or anything intellectual. I want my food now, before everyone else, and I want to be treated like the only person in there. Problem is, a LOT of people go to Rusan's because of several reasons, and if you want to be fed with your silver spoon go to Capital Grille and charge up your maxed out credit card.

"The sushi is awful"
Ah yes, everyone on this site is a top sushi chef and therefore, their opinion is vastly important to the masses. Ok, I accept that this sushi is not the best I have ever had, but for the price it is. If you want to waste all your money on food, go to Nikko or Sushi 101 and spend 30 bucks while I enjoy 50 pieces of sushi for under 20 dollars. Then ill go get ten bucks worth of gas and drive around, because I can. And, if youre not too hungover from going to the bar and trying to meet a future husband/wife, the buffet is the best thing in charlotte for lunch on saturday.

The point is, if you have high standards for your life and believe that eating somewhere where the ambience is classic, the service staff treats you like royalty, and your food came straight out of the ocean onto your plate, eat somewhere else. Rusan's for life.

1 Stars: NOISY with Bad Sushi (by by j9k416 at Citysearch)

We went there for my birthday and had a horrible time. The menu was confusing with all sorts of asian food jumbled together. It was hard to find a REAL sushi roll even offered. I was disappointed with all of the sushi items we got from the rolls to the nigri. The spicy tuna roll had some weird type of sauce on it that was not meant to be put on top of a sushi roll. My husband is half Japanese so we go out on a regular basis, and this is by fair the lowest quality we have seen in Charlotte. I have gotten better sushi at Harris Tetter. We will never go back. Besides the poor quality of the food, the dining area was so loud I could not even hear myself think. The chefs kept hollering something out while customers were screaming and banging on tables, which was only enhanced by the metal surroundings. I was extremely dissatisfied and will never go back.

1 Stars: Horrendous Experience (by by Yelloscorp at Citysearch)

I heard about this place that had excellent Sushi, so I was excited. I was supposed to check it out on a Friday for lunch with co-workers, but I decided to check it out a day early. After work, I arrived at the restaurant. It took almost 10 minutes for the host to seat me, and the restaurant wasn't even busy. Did I mention that the place reeked of urine? Once we were seated, no one asked us if we wanted anything to drink. We sat and sat, and finally, after 25 minutes, we walked out. I was hesitant about going back to Ru-san's the next day for lunch, but I sucked it up and went anyway. This time, we were rushed to a seat and told they were closing soon and would re-open at dinner time. The waitress, a young chick in her early 20's, immediately came to our table and demanded our order. We nicely told her that we needed a moment to scan the menu (which has a zillion and one items). She barked at us and said, "We close soon!" We placed our order, and she snatched our menus and stormed off. She came back with CAN SODAS and slammed them on the table. Who uses can sodas anymore? I can go on and on about how rude this chick was, but I won't. To make a long story short, the food was ok, but it was so not worth the bad attitudes and the horrible service. Save your money and time and go somewhere else. Thanks!

2 Stars: Lousy Customer Service & Lousy Management (by by TheMaster68 at Citysearch)

I understand this place has a lot of turnover, but forcing people to sit at the bar when there are booths available and the customer wants a booth is unacceptable. The manager actually refused to let me sit in the booth.

I mean, I eat in 10-15 minutes when I am alone. Anyhow, the staff pretty much ignores you while you are there, so no tip.

The food is ok. I liked their calamari. I'm not a sushi afficianado, so I can't really comment on whether it's better or worse than anywhere else.

But the customer service was bad enough to make me not want to go back.

5 Stars: LOVE this place (by Aless B.)

Cheep sushi. Eight page menu.

This place is incredible. I discovered it in high school; they offer a ridiculously cheap buffet, and their $1 / $2 sushi menu is legendary among cheap students. Some of their creations are too crazy to be good, but why penalize their chefs for being *too* experimental? The vast majority of the menu is fresh, new, and really great.

Some especial favs:
-- Teriyaki Rice Ball ($1.50 appetizer) A big fried rice ball smothered in sweet delicious teriyaki sauce. So good it's addicting.
-- Sinking Treasure Rool (~$8) A big fat delicious white tuna roll, fried on the outside, put in a bowl with daikon, and smothered in garlic ponzu sauce. My favorite roll, and a whole dinner.
-- Firecracker Roll (~$8) White Tuna and Red Tuna, flash-fried so the white cooks and red stays raw. Served with a huge pile of pink & red spicy sauce. Absolutely fantastic, but careful-- on busy nights they sometimes overcook it.
-- The entire $1/$2/$3 sushi menu. Build your own dinner on the cheap.

And so many more. Careful, the bar is a rockin' loud time on fridays and saturdays, and all the chefs pound the counter when someone takes a shot. Very popular and very good. Not the "best" sushi, but certainly the most fun and experimentation at a price you can actually afford.

Went there on sat, 5/26/07, atmosphere was awesome, all kinds of nice looking women and the place is upbeat, BUT, the sushi was nothing great, actually it was not good at all, if you want good sushi in charolette i suggest Sushi at The Lake, sushi there is always great, and the hostess, Stephanie, is gorgeous, another good place is Kobe, i been to all three and Ru-San's is not even close to freshness or taste compared to the other two

3 Stars: great sushi, servers take shots with other tables while you starve (by by emsfufl at Citysearch)

Menu-great. service, depends on server. I sat for over an hour waiting for my sushi, and watched as my server took shots with the table next to me. My sushi sat on the bar for 20 minutes before another server took it to another table. we got a complimentary glass of wine, but were still charged for everything else. If you eat there, make sure your server is female!

1 Stars: Horrible service with same sushi as everywhere else. (by by ipposan at Citysearch)

I have heard so much about this place. I have heard it from Co-workers to friends. I am still trying to figure out what the hype is about. When you first walk in it looks like a generic Chinese place. Seated very quickly. I was not greeted like ppl say they do. Our waiter spoke little English as most of the staff did. I am used to Sushi 101,so my expectations of this place was high. The waiter was confused about one item that was an appetizer on the menu, but finally figured it out. My wife had to constantly remind the waiter to get her soup. I got my sushi roll which was 4 big rolls.

The sushi inside was the same as most other places. I will gladly deal with 6-8 smaller rolls. I got meal before my appetizer and was told many times it was coming. After finishing my meal I sat for 15 minutes waiting for the appetizer. I finally got fed up and asked for the check. They had trouble fathoming the idea of that before i got my appetizer. They finally brought it after i ask for the check.

I told them I didn't want to pay for the appetizer. After that a chef who also spoke little English apologized and said they were short a chef. TOUGH.deal with it.Everyone else does. I finally got my check and paid. I told them I would never come back. I will stick to sushi 101 for the great service and quality food.

All in all the cold atmosphere with all the stainless steel, crappy techno and HORRIBLE service make this place not worthwhile.

5 Stars: Best sushi in Charlotte by far! (by by jjhall at Citysearch)

If you like sushi, try Ru-San's! True... it is a little loud. But they have added new seating so the restaurant feels more spacious. My favorite thing about this place is the variety. If you don't like fish, try the veggie options. They are great! And everything there is very fresh. Compared to one other sushi place I have been... I like this a lot better and think it is more affordable as well.

After visiting and walking out when I saw how the sushi was being prepared I am not surprised that Ru Sans was featured on the Charlotte observer website as one of the low scoring restaurants for sanitation score. According to the online health inspection report on charmeck's website, Ru Sans scored a 72 (6-26-06). A 72!?! For a place that serves RAW sushi?? I will stick to Musashi for now. It is more authentic and clean.

3 Stars: An updated Review (by by tarpgal at Citysearch)

I gave a review back in November of 2002 and I have been going to Ru-Sa's for several years. I have to say that the quality of the food remains the same however the customer service and service have declined terribly. I went from eating at Ru-San's twice a week down to twice a month or less. I find it hard to make the drive and then wait an hour or more for such lousy service. Twice now they have tried to over charge us as well.

I wish I could say nicer things but I find that I have to be honest. I hope they change things soon so they don't start losing business.

Good luck

5 Stars: Two words: Rusan's Rocks! (by by breeb at Citysearch)

A combination of sensational food, fantastic prices, and a Cheer's-like feel (nice to be recognized each time you visit) makes this Sushi Experience like none other.

Be prepared for lengthy waits as the word is out about this popular place. Unfortunately reservations are not accepted at this time. There is good news on the horizon, however. Rusan's is expanding the dining room to house all of those eager diners. Until the expansion is finished, belly up to the sushi bar for a treat for the eyes as well as the pallate.

Try celebrating your next birthday there and be prepared for a special surprise!

5 Stars: Exceptional Value (by by mrasheed at Citysearch)

Exceptional place to eat any time of the day. After being in Charlotte for a year, had yet to find a suitable place to get quality sushi and miso soup. Yes, miso soup. I place a lot value on a restraurant's simple dish. The soup was exceptional as well as for the rest of my dinner. After ordering two speciality sushi dishes, a dinner, extra soups and drinks, we ended up only paying $30.00. The atmosphere is totally upbeat and the staff is very professional and attentive. I will be returning to Ru Sans for all of my Japanese meals versus an overpriced hibachi.

5 Stars: Out of This World... (by by hammersc at Citysearch)

I went to Ru-San's for lunch last Thursday after a dissapointing dinner at Nikko's the night before. I was absolutely blown away by the quality of Ru-San's as well as the value. They had an all-you-can-eat sushi bar that was freshly prepared and offered everything from your basic rolls to some exquisite tuna sushimi's. Wow, was that a great sushi experience. I would have paid $100 for all of the sushi that I ate if I were at Nikko's, but the unbelievable thing is that the lunch cost $9. Yes, that's right...all-you-can-eat, deliciously prepared sushi for $9. You will never find a better value or quality than Ru-Sans. (Please note that the profile says that the place opens at 11 for lunch, but they don't open until 11:30. At least I beat the crowd as this place is very popular).

5 Stars: Rusans spoiled me on good sushi forever. (by by sirenbastet at Citysearch)

RuSans is BY FAR the BEST Sushi Restaurant I've ever been to. I moved from Charlotte to CO last fall and I've realized RuSans has SPOILED me on normal sushi - I just can't eat it! But while being spoiled on creative, incredible tasting sushi isn't a bad thing, it is a little depressing that it's so far away from where I am now. Whenever I visit Charlotte, Rusans will be the 1st place I go to eat.
4 Stars: Fun place, unique sushi (by by cuteesiv at Citysearch)

This place was recommended by Charlotte natives. It was a good choice! It really is a unique place, very diner-like, very LOUD, very casual, but also lots of fun. There were so many choices for different kinds of sushi and maki (rolls) that it took forever to look thru the menu, and I had a hard time deciding. Decent food. Fun and casual place!
