I live in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and I do not have a car. When I am sick, no matter what the weather, I find a way to get myself to Lime and Basil to let the steamy pho nurse my throat.

Yes, yes, I have had more authetic pho in "Vietnamtowns" from Orlando to Montreal, and I'm sure it could only get better if you left the continent, but if you're in Chapel Hill, there is absolutely no reason not to get it at Lime and Basil. It's cheap, it's delicious, and it's right here. Yay.

Pros: Prices, pho, vietnamese coffee

Cons: Some inconsistency from visit to visit

I have been living in Chapel Hill for more than 6 years.
If you expect "nice pho", just drive a little bit to Durham (Kim Son) or further to Raleigh (Pho Cali)

Pros: downtown chapel hill

Cons: that's not PHO

This is a great Vietnamese restaurant in Chapel Hill. We were especially looking for Pho as that is one our favorite lunch dishes, and we finally came across a perfect place for it. The food tasted very fresh. The summer rolls were great, the staff was friendly, and the restaurant felt welcoming.

If you are looking for great Vietnamese restaurant and a great bowl of Pho, go to Lime & Basil. You will not be disappointed

I love Lime and Basil. They have great food and it is a fun place to try new things. My favorites are the fresh summer rolls, the chicken curry, and coconut bubble tea. My friends always get pho and they love it too. I would eat there everyday if I could. Only thing is the service is a little slow some days. They need to schedule wait staff better.

this is by far the best restaurant in chapel hill and definitely one of the best vietnamese restaurants i've ever been to! the food here is delicious! the summer rolls (and of course the peanut sauce) are to die for, and the pho (all of them) are so flavorful and filling! the stir fry dishes are absolutely amazing and the curry is the best i've had yet! nothing beats this restaurant in the area - i try to come at least once a week (twice if my schedule allows me to). the owner is so nice - he always comes out to check on the customers himself when the restaurant isn't too busy. the serving staff is nice and friendly and the atmosphere is wonderful!

it's definitely THE restaurant to check out if you're ever in the area; however, make sure you don't pull out an AMEX or Discover card because like most other places, they only take Visa or Mastercard.

Wait staff and manager are always friendly and smiling! The house special egg noodle soups my favorite! Great for all types of eaters!

I have been going to this restaurant 1 or two times per week since it opened and honestly been Very very Happy .
I absolutely love this restaurant and would recommend it to any one who enjoys fantastic food, great portions well worth their weight in gold, and service second to none. The entire staff at Lime & Basil are an outstanding group of passionate people bringing only the freshest and highest quality of food. I couldn't imagine anyone not thoroughly enjoying their authentic Phao, or any of their tantalizing menu of favorites to please any palate.

I have been going to lime since it has opened. To be honest I can easily say its a great environment and fantastic food however I would be only half correct. Lime and Basil is at least one of the better restaurants in chapel Hill, at best its a fantastic Asian Restaurant stocked with great staff, very fresh and healthy gourmet food. A food jam packed with an individual flair of flavor by the restaurants owner and his staff. Ok perhaps he needs a few more tables but I don't think he realized he would be as busy or have such a loyal following as he does. Perhaps he can work on that. If you like Asian, and you like the authentic Soup Phao, Than you couldn't possible be unhappy as this restaurant has it down to a science. My Last Thought is to say that I have seen and experienced his complete dedication to his customers and his gracious concern to continue to strive to be the best he can and quite frankly I think he shall never fail.

My husband and I crave Lime & Basil spring rolls and every friend I have introduced this place to loves the spring rolls. You could have a whole meal of them. Stuffed tofu is fantastic - may be outside the comfort zone of many - but it's delicious. Service is friendly and the atmosphere is cozy.

after visiting this restaurant for the first time, i found it to be my new favorite. i have been there again several times since. The pho is delicious, and i have also had the lemongrass shrimp and chicken, both amazing. the food is fairly reasonably priced, and the service is good. If you do not like to wait, then avoid going on friday and saturday nights!!! (but really, the food is worth the wait). It is always nearly impossible to park on franklin street during busy hours, especially, but other than that there are no cons!!!! I love lime and basil, and i would reccomend it to anyone.

Went for lunch. Food was good but not great. Price was on the high side. Ice tea was really good. Service was so so. Could not get the check so we could leave. Well after we had finished lunch and after many tries we finally got the bill. It took about 20 minutes to get the bill, pay and leave.

This was lunch, not dinner, people work for a living. Unlike the waite staff we do not get paid to be in the resturant.

Like a few of the other reviewers I am of Vietnamese descent and I agree that Lime and Basil comes the closes to having delicious authentic Vietnamese food. I've tried the other Vietnamese restaurants in the triangle but the other places never satisfied me and left me feeling seedy and dirty.
Last time I was at L&B I came with a large group of other Vietnamese and Americans and we received fast service, the food came out promptly, and everything was done with a smile. We all had different dishes: the summer roll appetizers, the beef pho, the grilled dishes, the stir-fried dishes, and a curry dish and everyone was in love with their own dishes. If you're looking for a place that has great, healthy, no msg food, and great service Lime and Basil is the place for you. I've continued to frequent this restaurant and will continue to do so. No doubt this could be the best restaurant in Chapel Hill.
Ps. I've never had a problem with the staff and I've been there solo and with large groups.

I'm vietnamese and was raised with authentic vietnamese cuisine, and I thought the pho was amazing. Despite the numerous tables and few servers, I still receive great service and am always tended to. The music and decor all add to its great ambience and feel. I recommend going on the weekdays because it can get a bit on the crazy side on the weekends.

Pho was great considering ethnic food is not Chapel Hill's strongest point. Waitstaff are very friendly and quick to serve. Main problem is that the restaurant is VERY small and reservations are not allowed. Also, the restaurant should replace the cheap wooden chopsticks w/ plastic ones that are normally used in asian restaurants.

Food Ordered:
Spring rolls (fried): Good as expected.
Chicken Pho: Nicely seasoned soup that was very fresh tasting. Served w/ fresh bean sprouts, basil and lime.

My bosses wanted to take me to lunch and chose Lime and Basil because I had never been. It was terrific! I had read the reviews here prior to going and I cannot understand the service complaints. Our server was friendly, attentive and had a beautiful smile. The place was almost full and no one seemed left out or ignored. The food was great (I was the only one who had pho and I loved it) as was the bubble tea (next time I'm getting a coconut one!). I loved the decor but then I'm a huge fan of lime green, so I might be biased. Prices were right and the food was wonderful. I will go back again!

I moved to the triangle from NY not too long ago and was worried about the choice of restaurants in the area...especially Vietnamese cuisine. A friend recommened Lime & Basil, and I am glad they did. The food is very good and you can't beat the value for your money. I've returned many times (after being too lazy to cook)...and I enjoy the pho, grilled dishes and the summer rolls very much. I wouldn't recommend going on the weekends, as it can get pretty crazy...I think a lot of this has to do w/ the size of the establishment (very small) So go at lunch or on a weeknight. The modern decor, small size and contemporary vietnamese music all add to the charm. I havent had problems w/ staff either.. so overall..a worthwhile experience

Besides waiting forever until one of the wait staff notices you need to be seated, the service is incredibly slow. On top of that, the manager/store owner, or so he said, treated my dinner party with complete disrespect. He was incredibly rude and seemed blazingly angry. We tried our best to be polite and appease his contempt filled attitude, but he seemed to disregard customer service completely. I will never eat there ever again and I am letting all of my friends know about the kind of service we received. I suggest finding another Vietnamese restaurant in the triangle.

the only thing to eat here is the pho. a good indication of this is the descriptive placemats on what pho is. i've tried other things on the menu...they're ok, but don't compare to the fresh, flavourful soup. it's a good place to grab a bite to eat for lunch.

After visiting Vietnam, I've been on the search for a great Vietnamese restaurant to dine at and I believe I've found it, Lime and Basil! I must say this is the best Vietnamese Restaurant I've been to yet. It is extremely clean and the food is just amazing! My recommendations would be their salad rolls and their lemon grass grilled pork over vermicelli. They also have this great Vietnamese-French coffee. The decor was very appropriate and the restaurant itself was small but cozy. The service there was spectacular- they are very warm and welcoming, attentive.

...It's good enough for me! Absolutely the best Vietnamese food you can get in the South. Without a doubt, 2-t - the pho- is the right choice for any mood...whether it's an after GRE celebration or a rainy day comfort food. Every bite a party for the mouth!

After reading some of the other reviews, i wanted both asian food enthusiasts, as well as those unfamiliar to know that lime and basil has awesome food. The prices are great too. We often only spend about $15 to $20 and always get an appetizer, two entrees, and drinks. You really cannot beat the prices! The food is amazing. We get the salad rolls and the stir fried lemongrass chicken. The foo is great too. You have to go, but they close for a siesta in the middle of the day, so don't try in before 5pm or after 3pm.

I am of Vietnamese decent attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and occasionally crave the traditional vietnamese foods and dishes. Lime and Basil is a restaurant located off-campus on Franklin Street, about a 5-10 minute walk. During rush hour, the wait at most is about 20 minutes, but once you sit down you are served fairly quickly. The food is great, the place is clean, and the customer service is friendly. Dishes range from 7-15 bucks, alot for the average college student. Great food, would eat there everyday if I could. For those that are not familiar with the vietnamese dishes, they have pamphlets informing you about all the dishes.

PROS: Tasty Traditional Vietnamese Dishes

I was having a hard time finding a good Vietnamese place to eat around the Chapel Hill area and my friend recommend me to Lime and Basil with a warning "Sometime the food can be slow" I was hesitate to dine there with all the bad reputation of how horrible the services was. However, all the time I been there I was happy with the services that I got. Customers are usually being seat right away. Sometime there might be along wait on the weekend. All the servers were very polite; they are more than happily to explain and answered all the questions. My food comes out in a reasonable amount of wait time, and their food was amazing. They have a very wide selection in vegetarian foods. I am definitely recommending the stuffed tofu. The average dish is about $7.50 to $8.50. Bets of all they DON'T use MSG.

I had high hopes for this place because it's so hard to find good Vietnamese food here and I get tired of having to drive to Cary or Raleigh to get it.
Alas, the service is so poor at Lime and Basil that I never went back after my first visit.
Our waiter, ovbiously trying to stave off complaints, rudely told us even before we ordered that our meal would take an hour to arrive because they made all of their food fresh, and because they were busy. It seemed like he wanted us to leave so he wouldn't have to wait on another patron because he was too busy.
The food was good, but too expensive.
I'll still be driving to Cary and Raleigh.

Pho-nut would rank this and Pho-Cali in Raleigh as best pho in triangle. Only negative here can be parking (non-existent). Nothing wrong with service the 3-4 times I've been here. My only wish is that one of the triangle pho joints would do beef slices the authentic viet way-- thin raw slices that cook in near-boiling pho broth at the table.

Pros: soup, price, clean

Cons: , no raw beef

The food is great and compares to the pho and bun I could get when I lived in California. However, after giving this place about 5 tries to overcome perhaps some of the worst and most incompetent service Ive had, I have to say, I cant go back. Your food either never comes, or servers never stop at your table. Wait staff are slow, inattentive, inexperienced, apathetic and cant explain the very basic menu to folks who have never had Vietnamese food. It was embarrassing to recommend this place to friends of mine. With good reason, they were all offended by how lousy the service was. In addition, no beer or wine is on the menu. It makes me sad, because the place is otherwise a bright, popular place and fills a culinary niche on Franklin St.

Pros: good food

Cons: , long waits, no beer

I was spoiled by good cheap vietnamese food. I sorely missed this here in the triangle. Now Lime and Basil fills this need amply. A must try.

Since moving to NC from the midwest (away from my Vietnamese parents) I have been craving authentic pho. Lime and Basil fulfilled my cravings! However, once seated, it took the wait staff and hr to get serve us water and then another half hr to take our order. It was almost 2 full hrs before we were served dinner. The LONG wait would make me think twice about coming back. But I have to admit, the pho has been the closest to my mothers in the triangle area... Back in where I live, Pho is half the price it is here... But perhaps only a Vietnamese person would know how truley inexpensive the dish is to prepare.

Pros: Good Food, Nice simple decor

Cons: , slow service, unattentive staff

Very generous portions are presented with delicate spices and an obvious attention to detail. The tofu with lemongrass and chillis was good but the sauce, although flavorful, was thin. The vegetarian stir fry was perfect, and the fresh spring rolls were wonderful. Their thai tea bubble drink was tasty and fun!

As a person who has quite a bit of Vietnamese food, I enjoyed the overall experience. The restaurant has only been open for a few months, and with a little luck should work out the kinks. The "salad rolls" or, as it is often referred "fresh spring rolls" or "garden rolls", were the most pleasant aspect of the meal. The sauce was just right and with a little bit more cilantro it would have been perfect. The seafood soup with egg noodles was well done, but needed a little more flavor. The chicken with lemongrass was disappointing--the chicken was dry and the vermicelli needed to be cooked a little more. The prices are very reasonable and it is worth taking a chance.

Having lived in Vietnam and in US cities with lots of Vietnamese restaurants, this new Chapel Hill restaurant can hold its own when it comes to providing tasty, authentic Vietnamese cuisine at reasonable prices. Though the decor is not fancy, the restaurant makes it up with dishes of large portions. Staff is courteous and down to earth. Vegetarians will be happy for there are many options, but meat-eaters will be content as well. Finally, a good Vietnamese restaurant for Chapel Hill!
