We have eaten here several times recently and everything has been very good. Service has also been great, both for dining in and takeout.

The menu includes some of the dishes from the old Pao Lim menu and Japanese from the Kimono menu (but no sushi) and probably others, plus they do other dishes not listed on the menu. The menu is available on Durham Takeout's site.

I gave up on Pao Lim several years ago when the food became mediocre but whatever problems they had before seem to have been solved and it is even better than before. Hopefully more people will catch on as it used to be quite popular and is fairly quiet now, so good for groups and families as there's plenty of room.

Pros: Great food, nice decor, friendly people

I'm a vegetarian and sometimes have trouble finding good veg options at local restaurants, but Pao Lim has great tofu and veggie options. (They have similar meat versions for you non-vegs!) The owners are always there and are very welcoming. They recommend new dishes and every one I've tried has been fabulous. I highly recommend the Indian Lentil Soup - to die for - and the Chili chicken or tofu. The chili dish is spicy, but you can ask for it less spiced. Either way, it is amazing. This place is definitely worth checking out, but be warned - you'll likely become a regular if you try it once!

One of the best Asian restaurants in the area. Offers great, fresh food at a very reasonable price. Some favorite dishes include the General Tso's Chicken and Mongolian Beef. They have a wonderful variety of dishes and are unique in their offering of several different Asian dishes. I haven't tried the cheesecake rolls but the tempura banana was a wonderful way to end a great meal. The owners are lovely people and I am so excited that they are now on Durhamtakeout! One of Durham's hidden treasures!

I also was a long time regular of Pao Lim and have recently discovered that their old menu, including my favorite dishes were back! However, on my most recent visit I tried a new dish, Singapore Noodles. The fine rice noodles were like a delightful explosion of flavors- an aromatic curry combo, balancing each other perfectly (and I'm not usually a curry fan). Also I tried their hibachi shrimp and filet migon meal. Great value for everything you receive. The onion soup was wonderful and their ginger sauce I could have drank with a straw! (If I am ever sick, I'm going to get a large take out container of that soup!) Whatever name they call it, I'll be back and glad to support this locally-owned business!

This restaurant is one of my family's favorites. We are big fans of the Hibachi Chicken- a large serving of chicken, vegetables and rice all for about $7. The Mongolian Beef and General Tso's Chicken are great - as is the Salt and Pepper Shrimp. We love to support this family-owned business where the owners go to great lengths to be sure that every meal is a wonderful experience. NOW THEY HAVE DELIVERY THROUGH DURHAM TAKE-OUT!

I used to love Pao Lim. It was a wonderful, locally owned restaurant with an eclectic menu and fresh, delicious food. Then they changed with the economy to become a japanese steakhouse and sushi bar - bad idea. Who needs another one of those? Well, I am happy to report that they're back. Although the sign out front still says Kimono, the food that brought me in the first time is back on the menu. The baby shrimp roll appetizers are crispy and perfectly accompanied with a spicy dipping sauce. My favorite entrees are the honey walnut shrimp, the crispy tofu and the crispy scallops. The people are so friendly and willing to adjust the dishes to make it perfect for you. I will be returning with friends.

The staff is very friendly... They used to serve indo-Chinese earlier.. and although the previous menu is not listed, they are more than willing to serve you the dish if you ask for it.

Am yet to taste the Japanese cuisine though!

This place was a Indo-chinese restaurant before and we go back for the Indo-chinese food. I haven't yet tasted japanese food here.

Very tasty food, though Indo-chinese options are reduced now. Definitely recommend that place if you are staying around the triangle and if you want some good Indo-chinese food. Service is good too, friendly staff.

I went to this place all the time for awhile, but have stopped only because there is better food elsewhere. A lot of dishes are too slimy and saucy, and though are delicious at first bite are hard to eat a lot of. I do like the Gobi Manchurian as a nice vegetarian version of Manchurian chicken using cauliflower. Otherwise I haven't been a fan of anything else, and I've tried. The Beef Bulgogi was especially bad and nothing like at a Korean restaurant. The lunch special is a good value, but some dishes like Orange chicken are just sauce with little bits of chicken at lunch, and not the same as the dinner dish. My co-diners at lunch only liked the Pad Thai, and everyone else was disappointed. I love the staff there and the atmosphere, however, so I never mind going when invited.

Let me first tell "you" about myself. I am a regular customer of Pao Lim! And every visit I made was a GREAT and a POSITIVE experience for me! The food is really really good and so is the service! Additionally, when there was a problem the waiter or the manager were gladly to "fix" it so that the problem was solved.
When I read the review of "belabee", I was SHOCKED that he or she wrote something this ABSURD about Pao Lim. Belabee complained about the sizes of the food portion, and I will now explain and prove that he or she is wrong. He wrote that they ordered Chilli Chicken, which was the lunch portion. (since he said that they were eating at Pao Lim at noon) Like I said before that he complained about the size of the food. There is a simple explanation about that. He probably mistook the Chili Chicken (lunch) from the Chili Chicken (dinner), which explains why he is complaining about the portion of the food. The lunch portion is OBVIOUSLY less than the dinner portion, which means that the portion has less chicken.(in this case) The Chili Chicken of the lunch portion does not have garnish, only the dinner portion. He also said that Pao Lim is using round plates instead of the square ones. The round plates are only for the lunch portion and the square ones are for the dinner portion!! That may explain that he is wrong according to my conclusion.
As I said before, I am a regular customer and I ordered there from the lunch menu as well as the dinner menu. This place is worth to try it!!

Pao Lim Asian Bistro& Bar is my favorite place in Durham!!! It has a variety of food. I almost tried all of it! And they are all EXCELLENT! I really recommend the Sample Platter or the Chicken Lettuce Wrap as Appetizers!! As Entrees, I highly recommend the Mongolian Beef, Chili Chicken, Crispy Salmon a la Hawaii etc. And the Cheesecake Roll is the Best Desert I ever have in my life!!!!! Not only is the food good but the Service is MARVELOUS!! The staffs are friendly and helpful if we need something!! The atmosphere is great too. If I eat there I really like to seat at the booth side!!
IT IS A MUST TO TRY IT!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!

We used to like this place when we moved to the triangle area back in 2005. We dined here regularly....We loved the mongolian beef, chilli chicken, scallion chicken, chicken manchrian etc. We also liked their lunch specials. We were disappointed to find out today that their portion sizes are reduced by half---they now use smaller round plates instead of their signature square ones! They think their customers are stupid to not notice the portion size difference!!!
The quality of food has also gone down with hardly any vegetables in the dish...chilli chicken just had fried chicken in sauce--no scallions, no garnish! & fried rice just had egg in it!
It is disappointing to see the quality slip! It is not surprising that we were the only ones eating in the restaurant at noon on a friday!!!

I went there few weeks ago with my family and friends for dinner.
The food was average. But, their serving for customer was not good.
They weren't friendly at all especially for kids.
I wouldn't recommend this place for family.

Pao Lim has the worst, inconsiderate, and thougthless management ever! My wife and I had ordered two glasses of wine and two entrees from the menu which had the prices listed. When we got the bill, the prices that Pao Lim managment had charged us was different from the menu prices. We demanded to speak to the management, but the management refused to speak to us. We kept insisting to the wait staff that no matter what, the management has to come and explained the discrepency to us. Of course, the management once again refused to speak to us and told the wait staff to tell us that they were extremely busy. Let me tell you all, the resturant wasn't that busy at all. There were probably only three tables that had two people to a table. I'm the customer and it is the MANAGEMENT JOB to make my dinning experience at their exstablishment an enjoyable, stress-free, and pain-free. THE MANAGEMENT AT PAO LIM FAILED MISERABLY!!!! The current management needs to be fired and have someone who is capable in all aspect of running a resturant to manage it! We ended up paying, but we will NEVER come back again. I would not recommend any of my friends or collegues to eat at Pao Lim until the management has change!!!!!!!! Before you eat at Pao Lim, ask to see if they have a new management. If not, go to another resturant with better management. McDonald has better management staff then the ones at Pao Lim!!!!

BAD MANAGEMENT !!! I had made a reservation a week before Valetine's Day, and when I got there with my date the" manager " asked us to wait 30 minutes. So what was the point to make reservations ??? We had to wait at the bar for a while, and I had a hard time to have someone to fix us the drinks, and then I realized that Pao Lim Asian Bistro & !BAR! did not have a bartender. I saw wait staff mixing drinks, and I saw other customers complaining about their drinks while we were waiting. Me and my date had to celebrate Valentine's Day in different restaurant.

Room setting is nice and service was fine. Though the food was terrible. The chicken meat in the Chicken Tum Yum soup and PadTai was not fresh and seemed not cleaned well. PaiTai is too sweet and not spicy at all. Mongolian beef is tender but again, too sweet. I won't recommend it to anyone who wants some decent Asian food.

This is my, and my entire family's, favorite Indo-Chinese (and Thai, Vietnames) restaraunt. And not just in the triangle area, but the best Chinese I've ever had. We liked several dishes so much that my husband and I had our rehearsal dinner there. Top picks are: Mongolian Beef, Orange Peel Chicken, Seafood in Black Bean Sauce, Pad Thai and Papaya Salad. This is definitely for people who would like a Chinese food experience outside of PF Chang's or strip mall joints.

This place is definately a hidden treasure in Durham. This is by far the BEST Asian food I have ever had, and I have been to many... The Indian, Chinese, Thai dishes are to die for! Desserts are delicous with a great presentation. Prices are reasonable, especially for what you get. The best Hot And Sour soup I have ever had. I got the sampler which gives you a great sample of appetizers. They were incredible! I would also recommend the Mongolian Beef and House Rice...Delicious!

I have eaten here many times, and have never been disappointed. I am celiac, and the chef will prepare any dish containing soy sauce with wheat-free tamari , if asked -- I haven't found that anywhere else. Rice sticks and spring rolls are also gluten-free. The coconut ice cream is delightful (and served in a polished coconut shell), and the Mongolian Beef is spicy and delicious. A real treat for lunch or dinner!

I was not pleased with my dinner. I had the roast duck, which was dry and cut into bony pieces that made finding meat awkward. I went with a group of others, and I tasted two other entrees. In both, the chicken was overcooked and dry. On the other hand the service was good, and my pear tart dessert was great. Overall, I would not recommend.

I can't stress enough how fantastic the food is here. Even if they made me sit outside by the dumpster, I might just do that to get their food on a busy Saturday night. I highly recommend the green papaya salad, salad w/salmon, orange chicken, Mongolian beef, and the seafood in black bean sauce. It's not your neighborhood Chinese joint by any stretch. Truly a culinary wonder without being the least bit stuffy or fru-fru.

It's worth the drive if you live 30 or more minutes away. Service is good, but better during the week like most restaurants when they aren't packed. I am never disappointed and have been many, many times and with different groups of friends and family. Everyone I take comes back again on their own.

The service at this place is very bad.

I did go there 3 times, as I love Pan Asian food.

The food was very spice.
The waiter did not even care to come and ask us how the food was ? or did we need a glass of water? When I asked for a glass of water he did not get me one.

This was not just for one time but it was the 2'd time that I felt that the service is very bad.

Personally I feel don't waste your money going to a restaurante were the service is this bad.

Pao Lim has great food at reasonable prices, courteous service, and nice classy ambiance...a rare combination if you are looking to dine in style on a budget! They're also open for lunch. They offer favorite standbys and interesting twists that fuse Chinese/Thai/Indian influences, and it's always fresh. Try the pakoras for an appetizer....yum!! The deserts are amazing...homemade gelatos with fresh fruit to die for...the pistaschio ice cream is packed with fresh nuts and actually tastes like pistaschios, without any artificial flavoring or coloring. Quality food, courteous service, a great value all around.

I'm into spicy food and when I found this restaurant by accident, i was thankful to live close by. Food in the triangle is fairly low on the flavor scale in my opinion. I was soo happy when i came here. Best chinese/Indian food around, and I;ve tried plenty. The proportions are great, to order one plate per person is ambitious. I highly reccomend this restaurant in an intimate setting where a few people can share the food like a family. There is an Indian waiter there who is exceptionally nice. Ive never been unhappy eathing there.

I had reserved table for a group of 16 on New Years's eve. We had 3 toddlers in the group. The restaurant was very flexible and helpful in working with our schedule and group. The restaurant has a nice ambience. The bar is to one side while the dining area is to the other. The food is very tasty with a good combination of Chinese and Indian flavor. They don't use MSG. I ordered Spicy Chicken with Peanuts and it was very delicious. Some vegetarians in the group enjoyed fried rice. Lots of other vegetarian dishes on the menu. The dessert was mediocre. Chocolate Cake was not moist on that day. Overall a very good restaurant.

Pros: not too expensive, nice ambience

A friend & I were headed for another restaurant & decided to eat here because of the good reviews I'd read. What a great place - terrific food & pretty inside. As a vegetarian, I really appreciated having a choice. Have been back several times since & have never regreted it.

I have been waiting for ages to get some Indo-Chinese food in Durham... I have been well rewarded... The secret to getting a great dish is to speak with the proprietor... He hails from Kolkota (Calcutta), India and is fluent in Hindi... He always has great suggestions for non-veggies and veggies alike, which are off-the-menu... For the veggies - try the Veg. Manchurian... Also ask for the American Chop Suey... They are to die for;-) For the non-veggies - try the Chilli Chicken... Each bite reminds me of the good ol' days in Mumbai (Bombay) when I would be standing next to a push cart in the middle of the nite having my fill of Indo-Chinese... People, this place is a must to eat at! I am sure there is a very remote chance of competition since the owner has 4 cooks imported from India...

Food and presentation are both exceptional, far beyond the norm in the Triangle. I like Indian food. I like Chinese food. Now I like Indian/Chinese fusion food. It's hard to pick a loser from the menu. Portions are substantial so you may not be able to deal with dessert, but do yourself a favor and at least look at the highly creative and decidedly atypical dessert menu. If nothing else, you'll get some neat ideas if you enjoy cooking. I was amused by the "waiter took a call on his cell phone" review, which appeared practically (maybe entirely) verbatim some months ago in a review about another Asian restaurant in the Woodcroft area. Not sure what that reviewer's agenda might be, but I found Pao Lim's wait staff to be exactly what I wanted...there when you need them, invisible when you don't.

Our first visit was poor. I've heard accolades about this place, but the food was bland and greasy. Avoid the manchurcian chicken: simple, bland, and way too breaded. Singapore noodles OK but greasy. Service OK. Kinda loud inside. Atmosphere is kinda neat until you realize it's an old Hardee's. (Look for the drive-thru.)

Have eaten at Pao Lim 3 times...can't wait to go back again. First 2 times were take out, so I couldn't appreciate the decor of the dining area nor the service, only the wonderful food. The third time, while dining in the restaurant, I could appreciate the real value and great service. A Definite must-try.

Ever since we moved here in US, we missed chinese food with Indian touch, how we used to get in India. We don't anymore because of Pao Lim. It's the best Indian Chinese food I have ever had. The decor is amazing and people are very polite and helpful. I can eat there everyday. And it's pretty reasonably priced as compared to other really bad chinese restaurants in the area. Go Pao Lim!!!!
