Loved the atmosphere and food! I like how they put small twists on their menu items. I would recommend sitting on the porch balcony for dinner if it's nice out.

As a long-time customer of the Rockford, I was worried that the new incarnation would be lacking. But my wife and I had dinner there on Thursday night and found that it was as good as ever. They seem to have kept almost everything the same, from the menu to the decor. We each had the Mission Burrito with a cucumber salad. While it wasn't EXACTLY the same as before, it was close enough, and most importantly, very good. It wasn't a busy night, but the service was exactly what you would want from any restaurant.

It has always amazed me how many negative reviews this place gets. I've experienced poor service a few times, but compared to how many times I've been there, the small percentage is probably what you would get almost anywhere. So when I read terrible reviews like the one below, I can only say: Yes! The Rockford is back, and as good as ever! :)

I wrote a review that apparently upset some people, so I am going to edit the review.

Still only giving 1 star, but I won't give all of the reasons. For me personally, it was the worst dining experince ever. And I've had a lot. I miss the old Rockford, but with the new ownership, I am sad to say, "R.I.P. to the TRUE Rockford..."

I went to the Rockford while I was on my lunch break. As soon as I ordered my food, I asked the waitress if I could also pay at that time becuase I had to get back to work. It took 20-25 minutes for me to get a Turkey Rueben!

When my food came, I asked for a box as I now did not even have time to eat before I had to get back to work. Rather than bringing me a box as she went to 2 other tables, she ignored my request. I finally got up to ask her again for a box and she proceeded to have an attitude and never once appologized to me for the service which in turn made me late getting back to work without so much as getting to eat the food I paid for.

I am not one to complain about restaurants because I have waited tables myself and still do as a second job. However, when you pay to eat somewhere and this type of service is what you get in return, I felt compelled to post something about this.

Not a good way to conduct business!

Pros: Good food

Cons: Slow service

The food has always been pretty good and I have never had an issue with service. However, last night we had the most rude waitress I can ever remember (at any restaurant). That's all it takes to ruin a place when there are so many other great places to eat in town.

I love the Rockford and I have been going there since it opened in the mid 90s. The food is delicious! Lots of tasty gourmet sandwiches and of course, the Mission Style Burrito which is a long time favorite of mine. All the food is under $10 and there are many vegetarian options as well as lots of choices for meat eaters. I love the atmosphere. The music is always great and not too loud. It's on the 2nd floor of an old building and has big windows that look out over Glenwood avenue. The Rockford also functions as a bar and is open late night for drinks.

The Rockford is located on Glenwood South so it's a great place for dinner before a night out on the town. The only downside is that it is very popular so you may have a long wait to be seated (up to 40 minutes). They do have a nice bar, so I recommend hanging out and having a drink while you wait.

In short, I love the Rockford and so does my husband and my friends. We often meet there for a good meal or to socialize and have a drink. I think that people don't usually bother to write a review of a place when they have good experiences, so I am not surprised that there are a few bad reviews. I don't remember any bad experiences with the staff and I have been going there a long time... The bartender, Rob always remembers my favorite beer when he sees me at the bar, and I have always been treated well by the wait staff, many of which have been there for years.

If you haven't already, the Rockford is definitely worth checking out!

I've eaten at the Rockford numerous times. I love the food especially the chicken salad and the pimento cheese sandwiches, cute bar, nice artwork. I've read and heard many people comment about the service at the Rockford but everytime I have eaten there everyone has been very friendly and nice. I highly recommend it!

I could champion the food all week and I can also say, without hesitation, that in no other place can you find hipsters playing so well into a type--dirty, jaded, and rude. I am twenty three and have patronized the Rockford since I was eleven. Even at an age when I had to be driven there by my mom I was given the cold tattooed shoulder. I continue to go, however, because the Rockford is inexpensive and my high school friends and I share many memories there and I don't intend to stop going. I recommend everything on the menu even though I've long since been a vegetarian. Just think of the jerks serving you as dinner theater.

I don't understand all the bad reviews. I love this place. I have been going to the Rockford since I moved down here, almost 15 years ago!! It is by far my favorite place to go out. I have consistantly received good service and good food. I will continue to go there and enjoy everything about it.

Food is fabulous and unique. Great sandwiches and sides. Cozy upstairs atmosphere. Wait staff is not always very friendly. FYI, in the past, they would not split checks.

This is a great place for a date, Cozy and cosmopolitan. The food changes over the years but is still outstanding. And a great place to meet up after work for some cocktails and casual food. But don't drink too much because you still have to make down the stairs when you leave.

My wife, son and I arrived at about 2:05 Saturday for lunch. We made it about 3/4 of the way up the stairs when a Rockford employee blocked the top of the stairs and said, ?we?re closed." My wife replied, ?I was afraid of that. We went on the New Raleigh blog, and it said you served until 2:30, but we just saw the hours listed on your door as 11:30-2:00." She said this politely, as we headed down the stairs; we were aware that it was a mistake, and perfectly willing to make note for future reference. But the Rockford employee seemed not in the least concerned with our inconvenence, or our desire to patronize his restaurant, or the possibility that others might do the same thing. ?We aren?t responsible for that,? he said, with obvious annoyance. "Oh, I understand," she replied. ?I just thought you might want to know so you can get it corrected.? She thought letting him know where she found the incorrect information would be appreciated, and that he would agree it was worth trying to get this changed to prevent future problems. Further, whether his fault or not, it certainly wasn?t ours. Prospective patrons of his restaurant were inconvenienced, and turned away from the door; at the very least, she thought he?d offer an apology for our inconvenience and invite us to return another time. She was wrong. All he cared about was that he make it perfectly clear that it was in no way his fault. ?Like I said, that?s not our responsibility. We don?t have anything to do with what it says on New Raleigh,? he reiterated. We left the Rockford certain of two things: First, it isn?t their fault that the hours listed on New Raleigh are wrong, and second, they don?t really care much about us as customers. So, instead, we went to Tobacco Road. It was our first time there. We received excellent service and surprisingly good food. We'll visit TR again soon, but not Rockford. When we have choices -- and we do -- we prefer to patronize businesses that appreciate our business.

Cons: poor service, surly wait staff, waitly surl staff

I, like so many others feel the like the Rockford has great food - interesting dishes - great prices (especially for downtown) and a less than stellar waitstaff. It is always slow regardless of the crowd & the waitstaff usually seems indifferent and is not attentive. So - if you're not in hurry & stellar service isn't a big deal to you - check it out for the great food.

Four of my girlfriends and I planned to go to the Rockford today at 1 for lunch to celebrate a birthday. I'd been there with a friend, and the food was decent, and the service - well, they ignored us. I can take being ignored. On this visit we were told by the (I describe him so that you may avoid him) 30/40-ish blondish/reddish-haired "gentleman" in glasses, "We don't usually seat large parties." Five people - enormous party. Then he proceeded to put two tables together in the doorway - in the doorway - meaning half the table in one room, half in another. We said that, since we were celebrating a birthday, we would wait when another table (all in one room) opened up. He said, "The food tastes the same, wherever you eat." A couple left in the corner, and when the waiter approached, I asked about the table, when the man got in my face and said, "Can you listen a moment? I'm getting something ready as soon as those people leave." I repeated, disbelieving, "Can I listen a moment?" Because surely he hadn't been that rude. And he said, "Well, you kept interrupting me." No - I had been the one talking. And I'm the customer. And I was being nice. So yeah - my friends heard and said, "We should go. They have a 90 sanitation grade, and they don't deserve our business." And we went to the Hibernian and had a lovely, lovely lunch.

Cons: But any food tastes bad when people are this rude. I will have a bad taste in my mouth for a long, long time.

Hey, here's the deal. The Rockford has good food, but when I get dizzy (SERIOUSLY. NOT A LIE) from the lack of quality air and my eyes can't close because they're so dry from the cigarette smoke, I can barely function let alone enjoy a savory sandwich. So folks, I certainly won't be returning to the Rockford until it goes non-smoking (and hey, non-smoking in one half of the restaurant that is open to the smoking portion ain't non-smoking) and shows some respect for the diners [as well as the EMPLOYEES-- I hardly think that breathing cigarette smoke for a 6-hour shift is considered part of ENSURING EMPLOYEE HEALTH AND SAFETY..... but that's just one woman's opinion, don'tcha know], and I hope you can sympathize and empathize and also find somewhere else to go if you want a good burrito sans lung cancer or smoky clothes.

I love this place. Sure there are a few staff members that are too cool to notice you, but for me, that's the charm of the place. There are more good staff members than bad. Rob, Cheatie, Jeremy, they are all wonderful.

The sesame crusted salmon is divine.

I like the food (they specialize in sandwiches) at the Rockford, but the poor service has kept me away. Don't expect warm smiles or friendly faces. In fact, don't even expect direct eye contact. The waitress we had the last two times we went there seemed depressed and miserable. She didn't check on us to make sure we had drink refills. She didn't explain why it took over an hour to make 4 sandwiches, and she didn't make any effort to build any rapport. After this odd exchange, I had to force myself to leave a tip. Rockford, here is a "tip"... hire more cooks, get rid of the creepy drawing of the woman smoking a cigarette, and hire servers with personalities and a pulse.

I love the Rockford and it is my favortie place to bring out of town guest because it is such a little secret!! The food is absolutly phenominal, (try the ABC sandwich or the brie!!) and the service is ok by my standards. Not the place to come if you are looking for an overhyper waitress that will kiss your butt all night long but these servers get you what you need and leave you alone for the night ot enjoy your company.

One of my best friends recommended The rockford and raves about it constantly. Our waiter was really nice and awesome and my soda was good-that was about it. The food was blah and disgusting-I ended up eating some pickles at the dinner table then going to the BK lounge afterwards. I couldn't find anything worth eating...It's extremely overrated and crowded...mmm never again.

I agree with the others who've said that the staff is pretentious. I have been to this place a few times and every time I'm there, the "service" (if you can call it that) has always been lukewarm. But my visit this past Saturday finally made me stop and think that no matter how good the food is, getting CRAPPY service is NOT worth the visit! We sat there for 10 minutes and no one was even acknowledging our presence. There were 2 waitpersons just standing around right next to our table and neither made an effort to even just say, "someone will be with you soon". They were too busy trying too hard to act "cool". We finally just stood up and left, and the 2 a**hole waitstaff saw us leave without saying a word. We will never go back there again and will make sure everyone we know will not, either.

I moved from Raleigh to Seattle in 2005 and everytime I come back I visit my favorite restaurants. Rockford being on that shortlist I made sure to stop by. The atmosphere is great. The food is delish but man, the wait staff are such pretentious hipster a**holes! I came back over Labor Day weekend and had lunch there with my parents. Our waitress acted like she was in hell. When I ordered she said "uh uh" and plopped the menu in front of me and pointed at what wasn't available during lunch hours and just stood there annoyed. My mom ordered baked beans as a side and was brought a cup of mushrooms (which wasn't even mentioned as a side when we asked). I live in Seattle where hipster culture is rampant and ridiculous and this brat put them all the shame. Get real Rockford. You are a tiny restaurant on Glenwood Avenue in RALEIGH NORTH CAROLINA. Understand your clientele and shake your waiters out of their tight pant-ironic haircut-hazed arrogance. GEEZ

The food at The Rockford was excellent. I loved my sandwich, and the prices were excellent considering the amoutn and quality of the food. However, I will have to agree with the many previous reviewers in saying that service at The Rockford is TERRIBLE. We went at lunch on a Saturday (after the rush), and the hostess never really actually sat us. She basically told us to pick somewhere, so we did. Our waitress came by a couple of times at first, but we never saw her again after we got our food. Some other waitress refilled our drinks, and we caught our original waitress at the very last minute so she could bring us the check...and I'm sure she only came back then in hopes of getting a tip (which I'm sure she was surprised at the less than 15% she received). Also, the waitresses were dressed very unprofessionally. I understand that this is an artsy place, but I don't want to see your navel or have your cleavage over my boyfriends food while you're serving us.

I am curious about service in many Raleigh restaurants these days. Those restaurants that are middle-of-the-road in price with typically great food, too often have a wait staff with people who seem like they really don't want to be there. This is what I have found consistently at The Rockford. I go back simply because the food for the price is unbeatable, but every time I return, I feel the wait staff takes a little chip out of me, The last time I went to the restaurant, I was with a party of six. As I was sitting there, I was talking with a friend when the waitress came up to our table. She interrupted our conversation in the middle of my sentence and stated she would only say what she had to say once so we had better pay attention, treating us all as if we were 5 year olds. I was really blown away by the attitude. She was totally serious. Ownership really needs to take a hard look at revamping the attitude throughout the wait staff, and probably replacing most of those working there. Interestingly, most of the time the bartenders are solid with their customer service. I wish the servers could learn from them and get a grip on the really important people (the customers) who frequent their establishment and help pay their bills. So, if you decide to drop in to The Rockford, be prepared to get a dose of bad attitude with an exceptional meal. I don't say this out of anger, just out of hope that things can change and everyone can enjoy great food AND great service.

Pros: Great food. Great prices.

Cons: Consistently the worst service in Raleigh.

I absolutely love this restaurant! But most of all, they have the best homemade artichoke and spinach dip on pita bread that I have ever tried. Their other foods are great...but I always have to get the same thing every time I go.

This is one of my favorite lunch and dinner spots in Raleigh. Perfect for a date or even a night out with a few (less than 8) friends. The food is amazing. An assortment of all kinds of unique sandwiches and large plates are available at lunch. At dinner you can have the specials or try something off of the appetizer menu to go with the main dish. They serve seasonal sides that change daily to weekly and all the ingredients are fresh and tastey. This is the perfect spot if you're looking for something simple, yet exciting. It is reasonably priced and the staff is great! Don't forget about the booze!! They have a good sized bar with a great selection. It is a great hidden find. You won't be disappointed.

Rockford is a great place to go for an inexpensive meal out before meeting up with your friends on Glenwood. Their sandwiches are amazing. The best are: ABC sandwich with apple bacon and cheese and the Bacon turkey sandwich. Simple food with a low price to match. Great views of Glenwood from the 2nd story windows.

Cool vibe. That's the best thing Rockford has going for it--oh, and cool music selection (Beck, Spoon), though the CD player was skipping much of the time.

BUT, the food was WAY WAY disappointing. Had the special appetizer and all textures clashed and the peach chutney was unsweet and unripe. Had the Cuban pork sandwich, pork was extremely dry and the mango salsa (again, with unripe, unsweet fruit) was definitely not enough moisture to make up for it. Needed some moisture. Then, had mashed potatoes as a side. Really, I mean how can you not make good mashed potatoes--butter, cream, it's all good? These were, again, DRY. Thank god the martinis were good and there to quench my parched mouth.

Finally, the server was a rather condescending hipster. Not fun at all. And I hate chains so am not looking for "Missy" to suggest an appetizer and give me a sample of the house wine, but some civility and cordiality would be nice.

Would only return for cocktails and the music.

The Rockford has a great atmosphere that makes you feel as if you're sitting in a friends living room. The food is "Off the hook", and the drink selection is also great!

The Rockford definitely has its own charm that you can only appreciate when you go there regularly. The staff isn't rude, but if you're looking for poppy perky chain restaurant style 'flare' this might not be the place for you. The food here is amazing. Being a frequent patron, and trying all sorts of dishes, I have never been disappointed. The creativity that goes into each sandwich creation amazes me time and again. And to top it all off, a couple can dine there and leave with it only costing them ~$25. This is a popular 'cheap' date spot for me and my boyfriend.

The food in this place was ok...nothing spectacular. But if you have kids- DO NOT GO HERE. THey don't have a kids menu to look at -but you can get a grilled cheese sandwich. (NO ketchup should have been our first clue.) The 17-month old that was with us fussed for a few minutes when the food first came out (she was tired), and the Hostess had the nerve to ask us to take her outside so it didn't bother the other customers!!! TOld us that most people do that to calm the baby down (like she knows the first thing about kids- she didn't look old enough to have any). And she proceeded to argue with us about it! THe waitress apologized after we told her that they should put a "Kids not welcome" sign up if that's how they felt, but still. And there were only 2 other people in the restaurant at the time. She made sure though she seated folks as far from us as she possibly could. Obviously from the last few posts from August 2006 through today, sounds like probably the same hostess! Not worth it. Try one of the other restaurants around that area.

I love the Rockford...when it's not busy. I recommend NOT trying to get a quick bite to eat at lunch or on a busy weekend night, because chances are you'll be waiting awhile. The place is small, and fills up quickly, and the food is sometimes slow to come out. Once it's there, though, it's worth it! The specials and sides are constantly changing to reflect the season, and I don't think anything on the menu costs over $13. I love the grilled mozzarella and pesto sandwhich and the house salad is very good as well. The crowd is very hip and it's a great place to people watch (which you'll have plenty of time to do!)

Its sad to see all these bad reviews...I am traveling to Raleigh from Atlanta for thanksgiving to meet family coming from all over the states. Having only been to the Rockford once, years ago, I can only remember that it was a cool space. Somewhere where I was planning on the family and friends meeting for drinks and such. Being that our time together is limited, I don't think we will want to subject ourselves to that kind of service. I just baffels my mind that after reading the reviews, that go back to months and months ago, that this place still exist. Having worked in the service industry, not only is great customer service crucial to keeping a business alive, it's how servers make their tips. I am very disappointed that this establishment has allowed itself to go to the ruins.

This place seems to attract the local artsy crowd - not the art collectors, but the artsy, creative people in town. The menu and selection also has that flavor. The food is good, but the potato salad has too much mayo instead of mustard. If going to lunch, get there early as they fill up and the waiting area is quite small.

I had an awful experience at this restuarant, for well....it seems the same reasons all the other recent reviewers had, because of the AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL service and the rudeness of the seating staff. If I were the owner of this establishment I would be embarrassed, I could not find one member of the staff that showed any sign of professionalism nor respect for me as a customer. Walking into this place was like freezing time, no one seemed to move at a pace faster than a snail and while doing so, their attitudes were most unpleasant, and frankly the food wasn't of the quality to make up for all of the other issues that came along with eating there. I hope that anyone else that has a negative experience here will too share their experience to warn others before they waste their time....and if you have a date and want to impress, I highly suggest taking them elsewhere it will most likely ruin your evening if you start out here!

After reading the last two reviews posted, I can honestly say they were not alone in their experience at the Rockford. I too was treated with complete disrespect by the hostess when I went there to eat last. All the visits before had been so so, but I do like a couple of the dishes and it has a cozy atmosphere so I continued to go back, but after my last visit, I too will not return to the Rockford. There are plenty of other new establishments in Raleigh to visit, so I would suggest not settling for poor service and attitude at the Rockford, their food while good, in no way makes up for the attitude you receive when visiting there. If their management was concerned about his/her business he would take the time to re-evaluate his staff and maybe go over some courtesy procedures. The customer service here is the worst I have seen in the city by far. If I were you, I wouldn't waste my time, unless you enjoy being insulted by a snotty hostess who seems to care little about her job or any of their customers.

I went to the Rockford with a group of friends on Friday night. I had been there many times before and had always thought it was a charming restaurant with decent food and so-so service. However, after my experience on Friday night, I will never set foot back in this restaurant because of their horrible customer service (namely the hostess who should NOT be working in the service industry.) The hostess was so incredibly rude to my friends and I for absolutely no reason, decided that we were not worthy of being seated in the restaurant , proceeded to seat everyone that came in after us, and then yelled at my friend for simply inquiring about when we would be seated. Our party ended up leaving the restaurant without eating and all of us were very offended by our mistreatment. I suggest to the owner of the Rockford to start hiring decent people who will treat customers with the service they deserve.

I have for years been a proponant of unique Raleigh eateries. As a native of Raleigh and having lived in New York and Atlanta I am proud of the restaurants here that exibit a degree of character. I have accepted, in the past, the subpar service at the Rockford. Many of the high profile restaurants in larger cities employ wait and bar staff from the arts community that seem to have "other things" going on that prevents them from offering accetable service. In those places there is actually a charm to waiting longer than usual and being treated with a "we can do with you or without you" air. Raleigh, no matter how much I hope for it to be, is not yet a place where such ambivalence is tolerated.

After an exessive wait this evening with a group of only 8 peopl, we were all but asked to leave when several parties were sat at tables that could easily have been ours. When we approached the hostess (who had more than likely been fired from Barnes and Nobles earlier in the week) why those weren't ours, she snottily reminded us that it was HER job, not ours to seat tables and told us that we were welcome to go elsewhere to eat. I was welcome to oblige and took our party elsewhere after informing the "manager" or someone who claimed to be so of our experience.
I have excused, for over a year, the consistent decline in the food quality and even the service. As a proponent of all unique Raleigh establishments I am dissapointed by the excessive the lack of service and appreciation for patrons who loyally frequent the places that can make Raleigh such a great place to live, work and play.
You are welcome to try it, and hopefully you will have a better experience, but if you do not. Please let others know of the unacceptable mannor in which you were treated.

Every single sandwhich i have ever eaten from this place is just simply outstanding. I love eating here. The only downfall is the service! Looking at other reviews I can tell it is just not a one time thing. I don't mind waiting for food or for my seat, thats what you get for going out on the weekends but my dear god why can't any of the servers be kind or polite? The whole atitude of this place is stuck up and not pleasant. If the food wasn't so cheap and amazing I would never return to this place.

I live in Raleigh for 23 years, and have not found a better place to eat! Rockford has the best sandwiches, and the freshest ingredients. It is a great place for a first date, or a night our with friends. It's also great for vegetarians, they have a new type of homemade veggie burger everyday with fun toppings. Try the Mission Style Burrito (if your a vggeie), or the ABC sandwich (if not)!

I love the menu and the environment of Rockford. The food never disappoints and the ambience is wonderful however I am consistently astonished at the lack of service. I can never get in and out of there for lunch in less than an hour and 15 minutes. Not only is it incredibly, dreadfully slow but they also tend to make mistakes with my order as well as other diners I have taken there. It seems almost intentional because I have been dining there for two years and service has stayed the same. If it were not for the food and the location, I would never go back during the day. I have plenty of time for dinner in the evening but for lunch during the week, I do not have an hour and a half to wait for a sandwich no matter how well prepared it is.

The Rockford proves that Raleigh is not just an up and coming city for yuppie pretendous snobs, it is for young creative people as well. Me and my wife go there all the time, it is a perfect alternative from the norm. They have healthy, inexpensive sandwiches and dishes that are great and the best martini's in town. The last couple of times we went however, the service has been not so good. There is a couple of new servers and they werent very good but hopefully that will be addressed. It also can be WAY too crowded on weekend nights so go early and take your time. Without the crowd it really is a cozy, cool place....one that Raleigh needs more of.

As suggested on this website, I ordered a Lemon Drop. However, the waitress and bartender did not know what this was. I ended up with a shot of vodka and a splash of lemon juice. Needless to say I wasn't looking to have a shot of vodka with my dinner.

Recently I went with a small group of friends and we were told it would be a 1 hour wait. We stood around the crowded bar, & continued to get pushed out of the way by the irritable staff. After TWO HOURS of waiting we were seated. The owner started to set our table. He laid out napkins in front of me, & put the silverware on one of them, and I passed it down & he bit my head off - said he wasn't done, & that I needed to just let him do it & give it back. Well, I can tell you, I'm not paying anyone, & CERTAINLY NOT THE OWNER of a restuarant to speak to me that way, particularly AFTER A 2 HOUR WAIT. I left the restaurant, & the Rockford will never again see a penny from me. The customer service is deplorable.

I don't know if it's attributable to the Glenwood South revival or what, but the Rockford continues to get unnecessarily sassy with each successive visit. The food continues to be decent and well-priced, and the bar is allright. However, service continues to decline, which is strange considering the fact that most of the wait/bar staff has been there for several years (Rockford must give its employees health insurance-that's the only thing I can figure). The last time we were there, one of the waitresses all but threw a hissy fit when a couple we were meeting pulled some chairs up to our table, which is pretty standard convention at most restaurants that I've been to (then again, I'm from DC, not Raleigh, the city that never sleeps).

I hope that Rockford will re-invest itself collectively in better wait staff/customer relations, because they've slipped considerably in that department

Pros: good food, good prices, nice decor

Cons: , decline in service

I agree!!! This joint is always healthy and happy. Food is excellent and everything is CHEAP! I go at least once a week and they only turn music up after hours. This place is the original in a now very trendy neighborhood. GO NOW!!!

Great Food/Great Service. Everything and everybody looked happy and healthy. I agree they need a bigger selection of sides. Only Down side is the place is on the small side with tables in the middle of doorways and the music (Jazz on Speed, the night we went) was WAY TOO LOUD, and I'm not that old...
