I attended a wedding at the Preston Woodall House yesterday. The staff was amazing. The food was excellent. The actual house and grounds are run down and dated.

Be careful with this place. They come on super-friendly and strong at the beginning, will promise you all sorts of "flexibility" and "great customer service", but their contract is written in a very unfair and lop-sided manner. If you have any changes - even something as simple as changing the brand of wine - expect a "no" and a hostile attitude.

They put a lot of pressure on us to put a down payment up front. But verbal promises were not honored in our case, and fair dealings with this venue were not possible. The owner quickly became hostile and defensive toward us. He then withheld all deposit money without providing any service, even in the case of a rebooking. He told us he would not return our deposit (OVER $4K) because he could not get another event. However, he got another event very shortly afterward, and he STILL refuses to return any of our money.

He is a former law enforcement officer with an attitude, not the type of person you would expect to be hosting weddings.

We have some hints for people who insist this is the place to get married ...

1) Read all the reviews on here. One is from a wedding that was cut short by two hours, a bridesmaids arm was roughed up and the bride left the house in tears;

2) Another one is from a photographer who photographed FIVE weddings at the house and had a negative experience every time.

3) Make sure to read (and sleep on) their contract -- and get a copy of EVERYTHING Joel promises you in writing. The only reason we signed the contract that night was that he promised that he was "all about customer service", he "treated people well" and he would be completely "flexible". All that turned out to be false when we simply asked to change the brand of wine (they insist on serving Cycles Gladiator which sells for $6.98 / bottle, while charging $17.50 per guest for wine).

4) Save your food tasting for the very last minute. They will require more money from you then, and you may never see it again if you have any concerns or changes at all.

5) They may try to "upsell" you at the beginning on size of your wedding, etc. and then charge you for an event much larger than you planned. If you reduce the size of your event they may not reduce your deposit (or return any of it).

If you are looking for nice, friendly, and fair people to host your wedding - who will respect the quality of your experience - Woodall house is not the place. Joel will use his contract to stick it to you if your situation or plans change at all, even if he books another event to replace yours. We lost over $4K and were provided nothing but horrible service and a nasty attitude.

My husband and I were married at the Preston Woodall House in May. It was so incredible! The two of us and our guests cannot stop talking about how wonderful everything was!

From the beginning of our planning, we had several wedding venue locations to choose from. We researched and visited many places in GA (my husband's home state), but no place seemed right. We also checked out a great deal of sites in NC, but nothing fit like the Preston Woodall House.

The owner and staff of/at the house helped us plan the wedding from the beginning. They were so kind! They made the time to sit down with me personally and work out all the wedding details on site. What's more, they took a genuine interest in our entire wedding party and our guests. Their gratitude was incredibly evident. Diane, the wedding coordinator, was there for my husband and I the entire time--from having a great conversation with her the night before the wedding, to setting up our setting arrangements, to literally fluffing my dress before I walked down the aisle!

The day only got better, too. The house has history and style--my husband and I love that; yet we also loved the fact that the atmosphere--from the gardens outside to the lighting inside--was so welcoming! Not to mention, our guests thoroughly enjoyed the food and the space in the ballroom for dancing!

When my husband and I reminisce about our wedding day, tons of wonderful memories always come up in our conversation! One of them is the Preston Woodall House. We will never forget our wonderful wedding there and recommend the house to anyone getting married!

IN A LETTER WRITTEN TO JOEL, THE OWNER OF THE PRESTON WOODALL HOUSE ABOUT OUR WEDDING WHICH TOOK PLACE MAY 8TH 2010
I think you know by now how high my expectations were and are, and how much I hold excellent customer service as a must, with anyone involved with this wedding, and in our life in general. Since my expectations are so high, I have gotten used to some level of disappointment over the years and throughout the wedding planning process. You, your staff and Dale, Exceeded my expectations to a whole new level. I wish that every business had such a format in running their day to day operations. Being in sales myself (and you also know,) that without our clients, we would starve.
I am blown away by the personal handwritten thank you cards we have received in the mail from our guests. From the food, to the beauty of the venue, to the service of the staff, everyone had an absolutely glowing recount of the wedding, some saying it was the absolute best they had ever been to. You all made each and every one of my guests feel as at home and important as you made Robby and I feel, and I could not ask for more. Diane was even awake and ready to go 7am after the wedding with coffee brewed and a smile on her face, as if she had gone to bed at 8pm the night before. She is truly an incredible asset to your staff DO NOT ever lose her! She has a dedication which I have rarely seen, and a very intuitive sense as to what is going on everywhere on premises. The wedding day was amazing, everything was beautiful and Diane again was right there to calm my nerves, she even brought breakfast up to Robby in his room so we did not cross one another in passing. Above and beyond!
Having Diane there when I was about to walk down the aisle did wonders for my jitters, and boy did I have jitters! In the weeks leading up to the wedding, every time I would practice my vows I would cry! I was so afraid to be the sobbing bride with makeup running all over my face with everyone saying "spit it out already girl!" To my surprise, I completely held it together, and when I saw Robby standing up there welled up with tears, that is a moment I will NEVER forget!!!
The day, the weekend, the wedding, was all like a fairytale come true, I could NOT possibly be any happier.
The bar tending was prompt, attentive and a joy to have according to my guests, since I was constantly being handed various beverages, I never really went into the bar, but everyone raved over the service.
I am SO happy we opted for "Package A" which truly is the BEST, my parents were so very thrilled that we all got to spend so much time together since we were all right on premises in the three cottages and the main house, No worrying about limos and transportation, just completely relaxing and enjoying time with the people I love most in the world, there is nothing better than that!
Well, I have written you a novel! I just wanted you to know how fantastic you, Dale, Diane and the staff are truly, you will always have a special place in my heart. Hope you enjoy the Magnolia tree for years to come. Diane said it would be a great tradition to start. I can't wait to come for brunch, when does that start again? OH< ps. people are raving, raving! About that Turkey, and the carving station in general, It was by far the best turkey I have ever ever eaten, and everyone said the same, its almost a shame to have to call it Turkey! Because it is far superior, yum!!!! Also, the salad, was big big hit as well as the Mashed Potato Bar and the Shrimp Cocktail was fresher than fresh, large and delicious, I was literally shoving down shrimp standing in line to be announced, standing there in my wedding gown terrified I would be announced with Cocktail sauce all over my face! lol. Just picture that!!!!!
I love you guys! Keep doing what you are doing, you are truly in a class of your own!

The Preston Woodall House was AMAZING!!! Food, customer service and the facility was first class. I was fortunate enough tp be married at the Preston Woodall House on May 10, 2009. It will be incredible memories to last a lifetime.

After reading the "Professional Photographers" review below I felt compelled to write my own review. I am a groom that got married at the Preston Woodall House on Sunday May 10, 2009. First and foremost a "professional photographer" should never personally attack people in a review... it totally takes away their credebility, is unprofessional and dissapointing. I had the wonderful opportunity to work with Diane at the Preston Woodall House, she was our INCREDIBLE cordinator, and my wife and I have to say she made our experience truly wonderful. The comments by the "professional photographer" below about a Waffle House waitress is totally inaccurate and mean spirited. I can assure you Diane was one of the most professional polished event managers we had ever seen. The other manager that this photographer was apparently speaking about is Patrick. His creativity, hard work and willingness to do whatever it took to make our day special was very evident. For the record, during our planning we got to know both of these employees above and they were absolutely wonderful, professional and pros at what they do.

We also had the experience of PHENOMINAL food at the Preston Woodall House. We sat with Joel (the owner) for our food tasting and his expertise with menus, customer service and great personality made the entire experience better than we could have ever imagined. My wife and I can not imagine why the "professional photographer" below sounded so bitter other than the fact that his HUGE EGO was damaged when the staff was trying to do their job and not cater to his demands. It also sounds like he is making excuses for his pictures being average... ours are amazing!!!

Again... the customer service, food and facility were one of a kind AMAZING!!! Thank you Preston Woodall House for making our dreams come true.

This is a pro photographers review for the house. I??ve been a wedding photographer in the triangle area for the pass five year. I have shot at all the major and small wedding/reception locations. The house is wonderful and many small hidden location to photograph the bride/groom. I would have to say the wedding timing is on the money.
That??s a plus for the photographer. We have no time to spare

Now my gripes, as any bride knows the photographer will be with you from getting ready to your big exit. He/She does not stop and no a time to waste. We have to coordinate, be creative and social. On top of making sure no shots are missed. I have photograph five weddings at the house. The management has always been very rude and un-friendly to me. If it??s a full service dinner expect not to eat unless you count scraping left over for the appetizer table. I have maybe five minutes to eat. I??ve asked for a plate my plate before and was told, ??Let see what we have left?!!! Wow, I charge $3000-$5000 for my service and I have to beg for food that??s in the contract. The photographer has been with the bride/groom the whole day. I??m sure he/she is hungry too. The staff is great but the management a husband and wife teams are not nice. The husband never smiles, I think he??s a cop or maybe ex-military who never really left that behind. You know this type which is fine but not for a wedding reception house. The wife reminds me of server you would fine at Waffle House 12am after you left the Preston House hungry. She is a control freak who will cut you if you cross her. Which is fine but not for your wedding reception. They treated me like I was there employee. To all photographers, don??t show weakness to the management. For brides, before you hire that $4000 photographer to shoot your wedding at the Preston House make sure he is treat well by the management. Your wedding images may suffer

My expectations were very high.........but were exceeded! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you...........
Several comments I have received - one neighbor said he had never been to such an elegant and well orchestrated event (formerly he was on the board for the state community college system) - another neighbor, the event coordinator for Campbell Law School, she said she had found a hidden gem and would check with you before scheduling events at her usual venues.......and the positive comments continue.

After seeing that awful review I simply had to respond! I had my wedding at the Preston Woodall House in May and it was absolutely wonderful! The staff was some of the most polite and polished I had ever seen, the food was wonderful, and the accommodations were great! If I could go back and do it again I would not have changed anything.
I would say that if the staff called the police there was probably a reason! Your guest were probably drunk and out of hand, and it sounds like they were probably very rude. Maybe you should have gone somewhere made for a wild party, not a sophisticated evening.
I loved the Preston Woodall House!

I had the worst experience I have ever had at a wedding at this location this weekend. Several members of the staff were so rude and the bride actually left her own reception 2 hours early in tears. The staff decided to shut the bar down 2 hours early and then called the police to come into the house and literally kick all guests out. The wedding party had to go upstairs and clear out all belongs and one member of the staff actually physically put his hands on one of the bridesmaids leaving a red mark on her arm! I have never seen such unprofessionalism and chaos at a wedding. The staff handled the situation so poorly and ruined the experience that will never happen again for the bride and groom. I feel so sorry for anyone that holds their special day at the Preston Woodall House in the future and cannot imagine how I would feel if my own wedding day had ended so poorly. I highly recommend that you conduct extensive research before ever using this location because it is awful to think that this could happen to another bride in the future.

I would NEVER use this venue or attend another event there for any reason in the future.

Cons: The staff/service at the Preston Woodall House is the worst I have ever witnessed.
