I have been a customer of Griffin Brothers for years now. My patronage has been at mainly the South Charlotte location but prior to it opening i did visit the North Charlotte and Uptown locations. I have found them to do excellent work at a fair price and most importantly, they are trustworthy. Chris and David, both at the South Charlotte location are two of the most knowledgable automotive guys that i have ever taken my vehicles to. Great selection, honesty, fair pricing, stands behind their work......just an excellent team. Who ever wrote that poor review of Griffin, well, he had to be a Yankee.

My husband loves these guys. He's brought both of our cars there and been very pleased. They also offer a courteous drop off to take you to work while your car is there. A bit pricier than other places but my husband definitely thinks it's worth it.

I recently took my car to this place and was extremely impressed with the atmosphere. The waiting room was clean and the front desk personnel seemed very knowledgeable and friendly. Then I found out it was all a mirage.

I feel like this place takes advantage of those with a minimal knowledge of cars and cannot be trusted. I took my car in to get the brakes checked. The brakes were fine, but I was informed that I would need new shocks and struts that would cost $900.00. Surprised by this, I took my car to THREE different places. NONE of the three places saw ANYTHING wrong with my shocks. When I asked them how much it would normally cost to replace that equipment, each place quoted me between $400.00 and $500.00. A little fishy if you ask me. I will never go back and will never recommend these crooks to anyone!

This place is HORRIBLE! I would never recommend anyone to this shop. I had taken my car to them three times prior to my final visit for oil changes. At first impressions, they appear great. Their shop is clean, their customer service is courteous and the mechanics explain everything in detail prior to repairing the car. One day, my car sounded strange, so I took my car to them, since I had always trusted their work in the past. After checking it, they informed me I had a very light oil leak around a plug beside the manifold cover which was probably causing the oil to run low and also causing the light to go on. They put a quart of oil in and informed me that eventually I needed to repair the leak, but could wait for about 2-3 weeks without causing further problems.

While I was saving the money to pay the $250 charge for the, up and coming oil leak repair, the cars oil light went on. Of course, I took it back into Griffin. They then informed me I needed an oil light sensor. The mechanic went on this long tangent about how he was going to put in an aftermarket sensor but wasn't sure if it would be a tight enough fit but if it wasn't he would then call the saab dealer and have the actual dealer part shipped over. I have a 1999 saab. After the $80 repair for the sensor, they assured me the oil light shouldn't go on again. I drove away from the shop confident, when one hour later the oil light went on again. I called the shop right away and was informed that the aftermarket sensor was probably not working the way the dealer part would, but it could also be the oil leak that still hadn't been repaired. So, I went ahead and scheduled both the oil leak repair and the sensor replacement. Low and behold, when they opened the manifold they noticed I had sludge, lots of sludge. Since of course, I don't know anything about cars, they told me they could put an additive in the car which would cost another $240 dollars that would resolve the sludge problem. My total bill from $300 for the oil leak repair and new replacement sensor, would now amount to around $650 with the additive. I told them I could not afford another repair at this time, but maybe in the near future. So they did the original repairs; oil leak repair but decided not to put the dealer sensor since the sludge was so bad. The mechanic said until I put in the additive, the sensor would serve no purpose.

Because of my suspicions however, I took my car to the saab dealer to make sure about the sludge. According to the dealer, the sludge was so terribly built up (from a previous owner??s negligence-I only owned the used car for five months) that the car had no compression which meant, I needed a new engine. Unsure now, if the dealer was trying to capitalize on this as well, I took it to yet another mechanic's shop on Independence Blvd just to make sure and they confirmed that yes, I needed a new engine. I winded up getting the new engine from a different mechanic than Griffin of course, and my car is in perfect condition now, but I would never take it to Griffin again...for anything. I wasted money on the sensor, the oil leak repair and they almost made me spend money on an additive that clearly would not have resolved the problem. I am currently reporting them to the Attorney General's office for ripping off customers and misleading them into unnecessary repairs. They should not have fixed an oil leak or replaced a sensor on a car that needed an engine. Trust is very important when finding an auto mechanic and I wouldn't trust them for anything in the world.

Incidentally, you can't find any corporate information on this company. No corporate address, no corporate phone number, which means this company does not care to handle customer complaints.

I'm still in search of a reputable, dependable mechanic in the Concord or Charlotte area. 1/28/2010
