We had a terrible experience at Caf Luna.

The place is located in an "OK" space with decent lighting and layout but the ambiance suffers as most of the patrons are NOT smiling (I wonder why) the staff are grumpy and management idiotic.

Every mussle was full of a big glob of poop! No wonder why they were on "special"!

Pros:

Taste - The food is wonderful. Great taste and menu variety. What was supposed to be hot was hot, cold was cold. Great tasting Italian dishes.

Value - The value on events and dinner is pretty good. I say value is good because the food is much nicer than an "Olive Garden" but does not charge a premium.

Event service - The events manager and service is great and easy to work with.

Wait staff - Very attentive, informed, and experienced.

Atmosphere - Trendy and classic styling. A tiny bit loud due to the wood floors, but very nice.

Cons:

Book keeping - They made a minor mistake on a final event bill. We were on our honeymoon and had to go back/forth on the error. I thought it was tacky to push so hard for the difference to their positive. It's not my responsibility to do your book keeping.

Owner - Owner went into detail on the book keeping error about how I as a customer was hurting his business over the book keeping error and how the small error meant a lot. I was asked very matter of factly "why do you think you feel wronged". Simply tell me, "I'm sorry sir, but I simply can't honor your request." Don't lecture me as a customer. Judging by other comments on Citysearch, this appears to be a common theme.

We recently hired Cafe Luna to host our wedding and provide the space and food. After a meeting with the owner Ryan and my fiance to customize the buffet to remove seafood to accommodate our guests that can not eat seafood, not only was Ryan not present on the big day but our buffet was not to what we ordered. We had several plates of salmon ,which we had removed. When asking the manager in charge that day about it, she checked Ryan's files in which Ryan had no records of the customization. So the notes that Ryan was making the day my fiance and I sat in person with her, were magically gone. After the wedding, after contacting Ryan to understand what happened, and hopefully have her make it right. Ryan said it was our fault, and that we never confirmed the changes with her?!?!? So what was our in person meeting for then? Cafe Luna has never made this situation right, and I will continue to not recommend them to friends and family. Cafe Luna were the only professionals we hired for our big day, and they were the only ones that dropped the ball. Very upset!

Well, first off, I had my wedding and reception at Cafe Luna, and the service, food, and staff was excellent. The price is ver. reasonable to have a wedding and/or reception at Cafe Luna and the atmosphere of Cafe Luna is wonderful. The dark, rich hardwood floors are beautiful and the details of the rooms are beautiful. Ryan and the other staff there were very nice and planned my event without a hitch. A few weeks after the wedding Cafe Luna sent us a 50.00 certificate so we could come back and enjoy a dinner. The food was excellent, the server was very nice. I got the Fiochee, four cheese stuffed pasta with pear saut, and it was the best pasta I ever ate. It was rich, creamy and very tasteful!!!

I can't say enough good things about this place. Ryan is the events coordinator there, she was wonderful. She answered ALL of my questions via email and phone up until my big day. She was very flexible in accommodating anything I wanted.

On the day of my wedding, the staff set up everything. All I had to do what drop my decorations off a couple of days before with directions. They also served the food, and I'm still hearing about how good everything was from my guests.

The staff was so pleasant and above par. They cleared everyones' tables and offered refills. They cut our cake, and did most of the clean up (the only reason it wasn't all of the cleanup is because the rest was stuff we had to take home). I was so pleased.

Brides, if you want a smooth day to sit back and enjoy your big day, Caffe Luna is for you!

My colleague and I went for lunch today and experienced good service, but bad food. We both ordered the lasagne, which was made with poor quality meat, was soggy, and left us feeling ill. The bread that was brought out before the meal had to be sent back because it not only tasted stale, but had mold on it. This I could excuse, because I buy that type of bread at times, and it has no preservatives, so it goes bad quickly. However, when I mentioned this discreetly to the waitress, she said "where?", and I had to show her. Not someplace I would visit again.

Caffe Luna serves delicious Italian food! Everything is fresh and their menu includes Italian favorites as well as some less common items. They have great wine too! The atmosphere is pleasant and it's a great place to go on a date or with a group of friends.

In regards to foodlover, I had a similar experience in which the owner assumed I was from a different country and was extremely condescending. He treated me as though I had just stepped fresh off a boat. I will never go back to this place nor will I ever recommend it to anyone.

Also, their chicken parm is not all that great neither were any of the other dishes the rest of my party got. Also, a nice restaurant serves their soda products in a can without even opening it for their customers? Crazy

I normally don't write reviews but today??s incident has so enraged me that I think it deserves a mention. This was my 2nd trip to the restaurant; the 1st experience was pretty good. When I requested the waitress that since I don??t like tomato sauce could I get cream sauce in a particular dish she said that she will have to check. Out came the owner told me that they would make anything for me however, his judgment should be trusted and that this dish would taste very bad in cream sauce and made me order another dish (I had ordered the same combination the 1st time I went to the restaurant the waiter then was nice and got it for me. I even remember eating the leftovers the next day). He went on to presume that me and the rest of the party on our table were south Asian and insisted that his judgment in terms of food should be trusted. He went on to tell us about some south Asian dish that wouldn't go well with chicken. He went on to bad mouth an Indian restaurant that he had been to in town and how it was too expensive (completely out of place in this situation).Since the others on my table were hungry and I didn't want to spoil their mood I just ordered a small salad and left. Although everyone else on my table wanted to leave without ordering a meal due to the owner??s behavior, I told them to not cancel their orders; I tried not to make a big deal of it. However, I am surely NOT going to this restaurant ever again.

Went there with another couple at our suggestion because we had heard it was a special place.Service was great and owner was attentive. The rest was downhill.
Two of us ordered Shrimp fra Diavalo and both felt it was tasteless and lacked any of the hot spice this dish is supposed to have. My Veal Parmigiana was more like Breading Parmigiana with the veal totally lacking in flavor and too thin to offer any textural difference with breading. The sauce on the pasta was the same as that on the shrimp dish. The fourth person ordered Ahi and was served a dried piece of fish with a slight ribbon of rare running through it.
The menu is totally boring and the execution seems to be more in line with Wedding food.
There are too many good Italian restaurants in Raleigh for us to ever go back to Luna.

This is one of my favorite Italian restaurants in Raleigh. The food is fresh and delicious, atmosphere is nice. You'll often see the owner wandering through the restaurant and chatting with guests.

My favorite downtown restaurant, the food is imaginative, well prepared and beautifully delivered. This place is awesome - and busy! Get there early or prepare to wait - but don't give up!

I don't typically write reviews, but we just had an excellent experience at this restaurant and I thought I should share. We stopped in without a reservation after viewing a movie at the IMAX. It was around 7:00pm and we were told they could put a table in the entry way, but that no other table would be available until about 8:45pm. It was too crowded with people coming and going and there was a cold draft in the entry way, so we declined and walked out to decide on another location. In about 30 seconds, the owner came out to tell us that the diners at one of their walk-in tables had gotten their check if we'd like to come back in and wait for that. We decided we would. While we were waiting, he offered us each a glass of wine. After a short wait, we were seated. The selections and prices were very good, the wait staff was prompt and pleasant, and everyone's food was quite good. When we received our bills, we were pleasantly surprised to see that the wine had been complimentary. The owner himself checked on us several times during the meal, and stopped by as we were getting up to leave to check a final time, thank us, and shake our hands. We were impressed with that attentiveness and the food and prices. We will return.

What a mistake we made in going: all six members of our party walked away disappointed. The only thing great about this place is the ambiance and location. I was here years ago, and clearly time has forced the owner to reconsider his business plan: reduced quality, less food, higher prices. The menu is completely boring. The choices appear exotic, but all come out looking relatively the same. The food portions were OK only for pasta dishes; grilled meats, fish and vegetable sides were tiny. Fish was very overcooked. My "grilled vegetables" consisted of three slices of very thin zucchini with grill marks on it. The grill marks were misleading; it wasn't cooked and was actually cold. The "house" salad dressing is largely olive oil with no flavor. When we asked for alternative dressings, we were told: "Why don't you order a Caesar?" And don't consider bringing a child; the menu has no child-friendly options. The clientele has shifted considerably in recent years and the portion sizes and limited menu reflect this. The average age of the customers when we were there (7PM) was about 60. No judgement here - I look forward to 60! - but not exactly the kind of place you hope to go for hip, chic or trendy downtown dining. All said, Caffe' Luna was in its prime 10 years ago, but is clearly in decline. I'm sad to say I won't go back. None of us will. Perhaps the expanding Raleigh restaurant scene with upscale and innovative menus (and clientele to match) have relegated Caffe Luna as an outdated relic of Raleigh's less-sophisticated recent past. What a shame.

Had heard good things about the place when moving to town. Since we love Italian we were looking for a regular (weekly basis) Italian place. Food was average at best. The thing that turned me off completely was that I ordered a bottle of Chianti that turned out to be the color of old brick and tasted like dirt. When I tried to send it back the owner came over to inform me that there was nothing wrong with the wine and that I just must not know much about wine since Chianti was supposed to look and taste like that. I informed him that I did infact know a good bit about wine and that the bottle had obviously gone bad, I would pay for it and he could do what he liked with it but I wasn't drinking it. So for the cost of a $30-$35 bottle of wine he lost 2 regular customers and I tell everyone I see to avoid this plac.

We visited this restaurant one night without a reservation which wasn't a problem. We were seated within 10-20 minutes. We had heard/read about this restaurant a lot and were very excited to finally dine here. The atmosphere of this place is excellent with Nicole Kennedy's art work on the wall (which are beautiful by the way). I think the menu is affordable and there are quite a few to choose from. The portion size was big and everything tasted fantastic. Although I was very disappointed with the service. We were seated at a table right by the door because the hostess informed us that that was the only table available without a reservation until about 9pm (We were there around 7). But then when people came in after us without reservations they were seated inside the restaurant (and we were freezing because we were right by the door). Then our waitress seemed to be very inexperienced as she hardly ever came to our table and when it was time to bring us the check, she brought a several over to figure out which one it was. She had no idea what we even ordered!! So overall, great food but bad service. But maybe it just wasn't our night.

My husband, I and our three children have had some wonderful dinners at Caffe Luna over the years, and Parker is a super host. We always go there for my birthday as I love the great food plus the attentiveness to every detail.

My office goes to Caffe Luna for lunch at least twice a month and I can say unequivocally that this is the BEST restaurant in Raleigh!

There are definitely many reasons it has been voted Best Italian Restaurant for several years in a row!

Pay not attention to people on here who obviously have a negative view on most anything in life and want to take it out on someone. Try Caffe Luna for yourself - between the delicious food and great service (the owner personally goes through the restaurant to make sure you have a great experience), you too will love it! I've been there enough times to know this is really delicious Italian and there must be something really wrong with the people who have nothing but negative comments!

Be sooo glad you checked with Citysearch and did your research-I wish I did. My husband took me here for my birthday. We are always glad to try new places, but kicked ourselves for not doing any research on this place. First, we ordered a bottle of champagne. They had no champagne flutes! They bill themselves as a wedding venue and have no champagne flutes. It was hard enough to drink champagne out of a wine glass for my birthday, I think I would have left my own reception if I had to drink out of one on my wedding day.
Second, we ordered a starter to share and then two entre salads for our main course. All of the food arrived at the same time. Since it was a very hot evening, by the time we turned to our salads, they were wilted and warm.
Third, we split a dessert. There was no asking if we wanted coffee, the bill arrived with the dessert as if they wanted us to take our dessert to go and get out right then so they could fill the table yet again. I am completely puzzled by the level of business such a mediocre restaurant does. I will never be back.

I went here in the summer on a Saturday night and it wasn't crowded! Definitely not loud, which is a plus for me. The food was good and not too expensive, although some of the portions weren't huge. The calamari appetizer is actually small and very salty. The "grilled vegetables" served with the salmon consisted of 3 paper-thin slivers of squash, but I still liked it, especially since it was cheap for what I was getting. This place is located nicely in Downtown Raleigh, if you enjoy that kind of environment (and the feeling that you're not stuck in a small suburb).

Pros: mostly good food, good prices (compared to similar 'nice' establishments), good downtown location

Cons: none

This downtown Italian restaurant is not worth the time or the money. I recently visited Caffe Luna, where I ordered a shrimp and linguini dish. The shrimp was rubbery and overcooked, the linguni tough, and when I asked the server to take care of the problem,

My husband and I love Italian food. We ate at Cafe Luna last night with a group of friends, and were extremely disappointed! My husband ordered the tortellini with mushrooms, and I had the ravioli with spinach and ricotta cheese. In both of these dishes, we couldn't taste the pasta or the filling because the tomato sauce was so extremely overpowering. It left the pasta seeming completely tasteless! Both of our dishes were extremely small, I think I counted 6 ravioli's! None of the entree's come with salads, and the bread they bring out is was horrible. It was hard, and bland.

The only good thing about our dinner was the dessert. I ordered the Tartufo, which was a chocolate and vanilla ice cream ball with dark chocolate chips, chocolate sauce and a cherry. It was great!

Oh...my husband ordered a soda, and they brought him a cup of ice and a can of coke. They charged him for each can they brought out, so no such thing as free refills, unless you get water. What kind of restaurant doesn't have a fountain soda?

The entire restaurant was so loud that we couldn't hear anyone speak. I made it through the majority of the dinner reading lips! The waiters and waitresses are also constantly reaching over you to refill your glass, or get plates off the table, and because they put the chairs so close together, you have to lean to the side to get out of their way! It didn't make for a very comfortable dinner.

We will never visit Cafe Luna again. The whole HORRIBLE experience cost us $45, and it was completely not worth it. I made ravioli tonight with homemade tomato cream sauce and parmesan breadsticks that tasted 100 times better than our dinners last night. I paid less than $15 for the ingredients to make the dinner, and it fed both of us with some leftovers. I cannot believe we wasted $45 last night!

DO NOT EAT AT CAFFE LUNA!!!!!!!. To begin my date and I ordered an appetizer, the house antipasti. When served it came with a few substandard olives, six small slices of sopressatta which amounted to nothing more than glorified pepperoni, and a couple wedges of cheap parmesan. After eating this and downing our tiny glasses of terrible wine, we got our entrees. My date had pasta with scallops and spinach. The scallops were obviously fake, more on the order of stingray or shark fin. Their preparation was also terrible, as if they had been microwaved or boiled (two things of which you should never do to a "scallop") The spinach was obviously frozen and the pasta was swimming in a pool of water (I guess this kitchen does not have a strainer). She took two bites and was done with it obviously not liking it, and the waitstaff and owner showed no concern in this and did not offer to take it off the bill (they saw her take her first bite, make a horrible face, and from then on out that night avoided us like the plague). My dish was slightly better, but not by much. I had the pasta stuffed with spinach and riccota, covered in red sauce. There were about 8 of these tiny things on my plate (a $12 one) hardly stuffed and again the spinch was obviously frozen. The sauce tasted like crushed tomatoes and a little pepper and water as seasoning. After we left here unsatisfied we went to Applebee's and got food that was a lot better and a lot cheaper. DO NOT EAT AT CAFFE LUNA!!!!!!!

We checked out Caffe Luna tonight for the first time and wont be going back. My husband and I were seated next to a loud table of 25+ people. Trying to make myself heard over the noise, I asked the waitress if they would switch a tomato sauce with a cream sauce for my pasta. She stated that they "don't make substitutions" on weekends. Unfortunately, the luxury of time it must have afforded the kitchen by not making that substitution wasn't evident in the quality of food that finally appeared. The supposedly "fresh pasta" tasted rubbery and bland, and the serving size was small. My husband's penne with spinach and scallops was swimming in a sea of water and broth and required a spoon. At least, I think that's what my husband was saying when he shouted to me from across the table. Alas, the miniature glasses of bad house Chianti did little to improve the situation. Arrivederci, Caffe Luna!

Caffe Luna is truly authentic italian with pastas shipped over from Italy. There is a new special the staff tells me appears for several days in a row each month--Fiocchi. This dish is arguably the most amazing and delicious italian I have ever indulged in. It is small pasta dumplings filled with four cheeses and a bite of pear served in a sun-dried tomato creme sauce...oh my. Mouth watering heaven! The food has never failed to impress no matter what is ordered. The waitstaff is always friendly (though I can't say the same about the hostesses which is the reason I don't rate them a 10). There is a great wine list, the ambiance is superb, the prices are very reasonable, and the restrooms are impeccable (which tells me about their kitchen). Everyone in town seems to agree, so make a reservation a few days early or don't eat until 9 or later.

The first time I had Caffe Luna was at a wedding. They catered the event and everyone absolutely raved about the food. I've never seen such a spread! The bride and groom also told me that the owner bent over backwards to accomodate them and that their prices were reasonable. So one day I checked them out for lunch and I am so glad I did. At first we were sat at a table next to a window and I was feeling a cold draft (it was December). I asked to be moved and the owner practically fell over himself to make sure we were comfortable at another table. A lot of managers would have been thoroughly irritated about that. I ordered a pasta dish that was really good, and our waitress was friendly and knowledgable about the menu. Our food came out quickly - a perfect workday lunch. I will definitely be returning to Caffe Luna.

Caffe Luna is a Casual Italian diamond located in downtown Raleigh on the corner of Hargett and Blount streets. Of course, we dined the evening of the grand opening of Fayetteville Street so the place was packed. Reservations were at 7:30 and we're stuck in traffic, so I struck out on foot to secure the table while my escort found a parking place. I ran into our other dining campanions on the way and we collectively got the table. Parker Kennedy, the owner, sat us promptly. Parker is always the perfect host with his Southern charm and gracious manners. We start with bread and olive oil for dipping. Water is always served. The pasta is simple and homemade with perfect sauces, The Striped Bass was tender, as was the Veal Parm. Salads are fresh and wonderful, portions are good but not oversized. There is something about this place that just makes you want to stay for a couple of hours to watch the people and look at all of the paintings. They are all done by his wife, known area artist, Nicole Kennedy. These are also for sale. If you are in the area, do stop in and enjoy the food and ambience! Love it! The Social Light

Some people have such silly pet peeves - the host is excellent, the food is great, priced right and service is excellent. The pace is perfect - if you want to be romantic, go to some fancy schmancy "upscale" French Bistro and get a 7 course meal. True, the menu is not enormous, but I would rather have a restaurant do 24 things right than 48 halfway. I have been going there for six years, never had a problem, and if I did, I would not hesitate to bring it up to the owner - because he will visit you 2 to 3 times in the course of your meal, and he will want your opinion.

As an individual with food allergies, I sympathize with all restaurants and provide a card listing what I cannot eat. Professional chefs understand how to use this information, and appreciate the effort. My allergies are not life threatening. Unfortunately, the owner would not listen and made a phenomenal scene. He created an entire event in front of 12 friends and room full of others, complete with armwaving as he described how he could not feed me and would take no responsibility for anything. He had no sence of diplomacy or concern. I felt as if I was being asked to leave. If you have allergies, avoid this place and take your friends with you. Every other restaurant in Raleigh that I've visited in 20 years, has been perfectly comfortable with me as a customer. Basically, go anywhere else!

I went to Cafe Luna for the first time last night. The hostess did seem like it was her first day on the job, but the manager was there to seat us immediately. Even though there was a huge party in one of the back rooms, our service was excellent. I got a crabmeat linguine, which was EXCELLENT and the serving size was big enough that my boyfriend ate almost half of it in addition to his delicious jumbo shrimp. All in all, it is definitely a great place to eat. The only suggestion I have is that if you plan on drinking wine, get a bottle. The wine glasses are quite small and if you only get a glass you'll feel ripped off. You can get a bottle for the price of three glasses and you'll get MUCH more out of it.

This is a very very noisy restaurant. The high ceilings add to the noise. The service used to be better but recently we had a very bad experience. We had the misfortune of being seated near the window corner where an important friend of the owner was seated. The owner went out of his way tripping over the friend and sending the wait staff over while ignoring us. Our water glasses went empty and stayed that way, service was unbelievably slow while the staff buzzed around the table with the friend like little bees. The prices are reasonable and the food is average but I'll never go back there again.

First, of all I don't even know why Cafe Luna is in the Romantic category at all. It is very noisy, there is too much lighting and the food is not even that good. For the amount that you end up paying at Cafe Luna, I say you better go somewhere else!

When the tiny glasses of wine filled to the brim appeared I thought, "Oh, how nice! It's cute and Italian and fits with the bustling, noisy setting!" BTW - Bustling and noisy is a compliment. I wanted urban anonymity, which isn't easy to find in the Triangle. But when the bread came out, one touch told me it was dense, flavorless, and cold. Appetizers? Tuna tartare looked like it was cut with a hacksaw, and tasted like last week. My pasta dish was full of broth, with sausage that looked boiled. It tasted like something I would have made from the recipe off the back of the broth can. I should have felt the disrespect for the dining experience when we were told "The wait will be about 20 minutes. Why don't you go down the street to the bar next door and have a drink until your table's ready."

This restaurant looks and feels like its on its last legs. The food is terrible, heated up, unimaginitive and out of a tin I imagine.

Everything in this place smacks of cost cuts. Grimy glasses and dinner ware. Uninterested staff. The location is saving it from what would be sure bankruptcy anywhere else. I wouldnt recommend it at all.

I left Caffe Luna thinking to myself, I can't wait to bring my girlfriend here. The food was great! I ordered the Linguini Fra Deavolo which was made in a spicy tomato sauce, simply awesome. After eating the Linguini I managed to find or make room for the Cheesecake...I'm a sucker for cheesecake and this was the icing to a excellent meal. The staff and I believe the owner were all very courteous and helpful. Great place for a business meeting or a lunch or dinner date.

Caffe Luna is a great, romantic little place to enjoy dinner. The food was very good (especially the portobello appetizer and the lobster ravioli) and reasonably priced, and the dimly lit open dining room and local artwork made for a romantic setting. My only complaint is that the food was served MUCH too fast--it would have been nice to be able to taste and appreciate our wine before getting our main course. Other than that, I would definately eat at Caffe Luna again and recommend it to my friends

With a wait staff undoubtedly trained by the pit crews of NASCAR, this place is officially off my speed dial. Don't get me wrong--the food is really good and the decor reminiscent of a favorite Roman trattoria--there's just no time to enjoy it. Dishes arrive literally on top of one another and tables around you change over so quickly it feels like a game of musical chairs. My most recent time there I tried to change my entree order and was told it was too late, as it was already being prepared in the kitchen. I had placed the order less than two minutes prior. The next time I want food this fast at this price level, I'll just save the trip downtown and go to Arby's.

You would think that making a reservation for 5pm the day before would be a request easy to handle. Wrong! Those that greet you do not bother to read the reservation book. In fact I was told by the Hostess herself, "Oh NO, I did not bother to read the Reservation made" We Walked out and enjoyed an excellent meal elsewhere. The Owner never called to apologize even though he had the Dr's Name and phone number, in the reservation book. Be warned.

Lots of other reviewers complained that they felt rushed and crowded, but I went on a busy Friday night and enjoyed it very much. It was a bit loud, but that's to be expected when there are other people around you. The service was maybe the best ever--very professional, very attentive. I was definately impressed--especially considering how busy they were. We got the fresh mozzarella for the appetizer and it was delicious (and fresh!). Entrees were not as wonderful as we would have expected after that, but they were very good. I wish I had had room for dessert, but the latte I got instead was better than any I've ever had at a coffee shop. Overall, we had a great, romantic, relaxed experience and will definately go back again. In fact, we are thinking of having our wedding reception there!

I went there once for a birthday party, and apart from being so crowded I could barely move, the lighting was far too bright. It took literally hours to get the food out, and the chairs and tables were so stacked up on each other that privacy was not an option!

Obviously the people who liked this restaurant didn't go when I did!
