At Pewter Rose Bistro, Chef Dewey and staff offer menus that are "Internationally-American," drawing on the diverse, ethnic and cultural heritage of the United States--relating it to the palate of the region. Local produce, fresh seafood, poultry, beef, pork, game meats, and vegetarian items are all interpreted in unique yet "comfortable" ways. The extensive wine list of over 500 selections is an evolving work of love by General Manager Susie Peck. With emphasis on French and California wines, each has been hand selected. We are proud to note that our wine list has received numerous awards from the prestigious "Wine Spectator" magazine. We also offer 10-12 wines by the glass on a monthly basis. Feel free to ask your server for advice with your wine selection.

The Scene
This South End gem is composed of mellow surroundings, including a high-ceilinged dining area filled with a mixture of accessories. The lounge/bar offers cozy seating in the way of overstuffed sofas and chairs, and an inviting patio provides a view of the city's skyline. Servers are professional though not formal.

The Food
Eclectic American cuisine and a famously popular Sunday brunch have created an institution. The menu changes twice annually; desserts vary weekly. Baked brie, a deliciously sweet and fruity combination highlighted by an almond and bourbon topping makes for a decadent starter, while the exotic salad with arugula, pepper-coated goat cheese, honey-lavender dressing, toasted pumpkin seeds and sweet potato frites is a spectacular marriage of contrasts. The grouper, overpowered by a heavy lobster cream sauce, is less successful. Better is the sauteed organic pork chop--tender, juicy and bursting with flavor. The restaurant's signature creme brulee is a sweet, silky creation.

The Inside Scoop

  1. Where to Sit - Ask for the four-person high table at the back end of the porch. You'll be tucked in among greenery, away from South Boulevard--and the other diners.
  2. What to Eat - Try "Dinner for Two" special, priced at just $59.50 per couple, it even includes a bottle of wine. It's available any evening, just ask.
  3. Know Before You Go - Pewter Rose is at the top of a steep set of stairs, and there's no elevator. Anyone with mobility problems should plan to eat elsewhere.

Dependable on the Standards

by Steve G.

Comfortable surroundings, great location from uptown, and good service. Enjoy the pork and beef dishes. The seafood, unless the fresh catch of the day, is not always consistent.

Love Pewter Rose!

by Erika A.

Been to Pewter Rose several times and the food, service and ambiance is terrific! The restaurant is beautiful, the food is classic, modertately-priced, American cuisine and the service has always been great. Definitely try their goat cheese salad-it's the bomb!

Great place for lunch/dinner with friendds!

by Jennifer W. | insider Insider | Rank: 15,435

Pewter Rose has been an area favorite for years and there are many reasons why this is true. The menu is large with a lot of variety and options - sure to please everyone in your party. Service is quick and the staff is friendly, never rushing a party once the meal is complete. The dessert options always look scrumptious (though I've never tasted any of them). Food is high quality and always fresh and the decor is warm and inviting.

Pros: Great food, service, and ambiance
Cons: Parking can be a pain if it's busy

Quaint little place

by CharlotteKindergarten

What a neat little place nestled atop an old brick building in south end. The brunch menu offered some traditional items yet some with flair and ingenuity. Although the service was pleasant, it was somewhat slow. The restaurant was very crowded with a wait at 11:30 on a Sunday morning. Good thing we had reservations. I would love to visit it again soon!

Pros: charming setting, out door seating available

Cons: slow service

Great menu for Brunch

by NJ2NC

Brought my mom and sister for brunch yesterday. Good thing we made a reservation. It was VERY crowded on a Sunday at 11:30. We were seated within 5 minutes but we did wait a while for our meal. We didn't leave until 1pm. I was impressed with the large brunch selection. Mom had the bananas fosters french toast that she loved and sis enjoyed the eggs benedict. I had the mushroom fritata. Not as much flavor as i'd hoped but a little salt did the trick. We loved the little warm scone they offered us before the meal - buttery and sweet. Just slightly dissapointed with the wait for the meal (about 30 minutes) but there were some large parties in the room and the waitress was very attentive. I would certainly go back. Also, was sooo close to the East/West Light Rail.

Pros: Decor, menu selection

Cons: Wait times

It works!

by zaficionado

Pewter Rose has managed to keep revamping itself and bringing in the crowds. The food is good but not memorable. The combination of descent food and the ambience may make you go there more than once. However, the staff is short and you never really fell like you are getting your money's worth.

Pros: ambience

Cons: Staff

great food

by alexanderjoe

I have been living in Charlotte for the better part of 30 years. I have seen the Pewter Rose go through many changes. Most recently they completed an extensive renovation and completely changed the menu. I have been to the restaurant perhaps a dozen times since their renovations and I have to say I have enjoyed myself thouroughly everytime. Most recently, I went with my wife, her father and her brother. We sat on the stage area of the dining room and had a very large dinner. Their menu changes regularly and I was happy to see many of the things they had in place for their summer menu. The proscuitto wrapped figs in stilton cream were AWESOME. Our server, who was extremely attentive, informed us that the figs were from the Chef's back yard. Our entree's weren't any less spectacular. If I had any complaints it would be that in addition to their far ranging menu they had 5 specials to choose from. It was almost too much. We settled for the Moroccan lamb, the sea bass, the huge scallops and a couple of more appetizers. For dessert we had the pear tart, again pears were from the chefs back yard and the carrot cake. The carrot cake was from tizzerts and it says so in the menu. It is nice to see the local businesses here supporting each other that way. All in all, in a town where chain restaurants seem to be the norm its refreshing to know a local restaurant that can produce world class food. By the way, brunches are awesome, too! I may be addicted to their butterscotch scones. Long Live the Pewter Rose!

Pros: great price points, great food

Cons: upstairs

We are visiting from NY on business and found the food to be as good as any seafood dishes in Manhattan. Cute decor, but the food was worth the trip

Not worth it!!!

by kxyz

We heard they had good brunch, so I made reservationsfor Mother's Day , weeks in advance. They called me 2 days before and changed my reservation time, so I accomodated. When we went at the scheduled time they still could not seat us. The host was, unorganized and looked frazzeled. They had the attitude of "We are a busy restaurant, so deal with it!!!) Ten minutes later, without any explanation they tried to seat us next door at Tutto Mundo (some side room/bar) as if we would not notice the difference. We objected, so they had to seat us in the restaurant like we planned. It was supposed to be a special day but we were irritated by their lack of courtesy. I would not recommend going there on a special day, They will ruin it for you. I read reviews from others that they had lousy service, but I gave them the benefit of the doubt. I REGRETTED IT. I would never, ever go back there again, there are just too many other options in Charlotte.

Cons: lousy service

its not 1989!

by paulhoneycutt

Always a good time and I've had the shrimp in the last 2 weeks and it wasn't rubbery. I guess things change in 20 years. Great crab cakes and it's nice to have Chef Geoff back from his stint at Lulu's! It seems both places benefited from that union. I'm glad this institution is still going strong.

Pros: Great food, good prices

Cons: stairs

Excellent Food and Experience

by Carps

We have been to Pewter Rose approximately 10 times over the past year. We have almost always had excellent service, and at least good service. However, we enjoy Pewter Rose because the food is absolutely outstanding. Whatever we order is extraordinary for Charlotte. If you know food and enjoy fine food, this is a place you must try - it will become one of your favorites. If you prefer chain restaurants with heavy, preserved, fried and poor-quality food, this isn't a place for you. If you enjoy fresh foods with a thoughtful combination of flavors, nothing you order will disappoint. This restaurant is probably best enjoyed by those experienced in fine dining with a discerning palate - you won't believe the prices for the quality of the dishes. This is an outstanding restaurant for those wanting EXCELLENT food. Bohemian environment is good for romantic dinner.

Pros: excellent food

Cons: outdoor stairs to enter

Do not go unless you like to pay high prices for rubbery shrimp.
I ate there in 1989 and found this restaurant to be the worst of the worst.

Wonderful dining experience

by catski624

My husband and I went here for our 1st anniversary dinner. This was our first visit and we were very happy with our choice of venue. I had the Lemongoat Salad and Chicken Crepes. Both were great. My husband had the Caesar Salad and the Pork Roulade. The Casesar Salad was a little disappointing, but the Pork Roulade more than made up for it. We also ordered the Quesadilla as an appetizer. It was fantastic. Overall, the service was great and the food was excellent. Dining outside was also a pleasant experience. We would definitely recommend Pewter Rose Bistro to others.

Pros: Food, Service, Value, Atmosphere, Outdoor dining

Cons: Parking availability

Unimpressed

by thecooks

Our girls' lunch out ventured to the re-opened Pewter Rose and I was very disappointed. Service was slow and all the waitstaff seemed genuinely annoyed that we were there. The meal began with a wonderful hummus appetizer, but went downhill from there. My chicken quesadillas were quite boring and actually contained a piece of chicken bone. Food temperatures were lukewarm and drink refills were not at all prompt.

Below expectations...

by nativecharlottean

The Pewter Rose has always had a great reputation for food and atmosphere. What happened? The atmosphere is still nice and romantic at night, but the food was lacking in taste and selection. The staff was not very friendly and appeared compelled to be a bit on the snobby side than to serve with a pleasant and graceful demeanor. This restaurant appears to be in dire need of a manager/owner who can lift morale and standards of food and service.

good all around

by happy4

I have been in to Pewter Rose for lunch, brunch, and dinner, and had excellent food and service each time. The service at brunch is sometimes a bit slow and jumbled but when the food comes it is worth the wait. Dinner is above average and prices are fair and lunch is very good. The decor alone is worth checking out very funky and ecclectic. Check it out you,ll be happy you did.

Pros: food, service, ambience

Cons: stairs, parking

Still love this place - quirky, friendly, yum

by margot1962

Been a fairly regular customer here since I moved to Charlotte from NYC over 10 years ago. I have always had pleasant service (it can be slow at times but I've never been into dine-n-dash). Food has almost always been well above the Charlotte average, and the few times I did have a problem it was corrected immediately - and wasn't charged for it! On the negative, the parking can be difficult and the valets can be a bit curt. Would I recomend it to a business associate or friend? Yes... but only if I get to go with them! lol :)

Pros: unique atmosphere, food, cocktails

Cons: parking, no elevator

This place was horrible... We saw the 9.4 rating -which is an absolute fluke- on citysearch and decided to try it. 4 of us ate and everything we had was badly seasoned, cooked incorrectly, and disgusting to look at. The chef, it they have one, must have been trained at Mc Donalds! The service was terrible, the waiter did not listen to a thing we said, he forgot appetizers, and served entrees all at different times. He also gave us attitude if we asked for anything. I give it a one for the atmosphere, but the truth is it was just boho eclectic, nothing special. When the bill came, for those prices, we could have gone to McIntosh across the street and had a wonderful meal. Save yourself and your money... Don't eat here!

Pros: Its over now

Cons: Food, service, price

Not Romantic

by dd_love

We just got engaged on Saturday, July 29th at Pewter Rose, and it was probably the worst dining experience we have ever had. Despite the fact that several friends told us not to go to there for dinner, we decided to try it anyway... bad idea. My fiance got on one knee in the middle of the restaurant, and the entire place went crazy, it was a magical moment, only to be followed by a pathetic response from our waiter. He approached our table directly after he "popped the question" to deliver our deserts and didn't even make mention of the event. That seemed to be the trend of the entire wait staff. The only response from our waiter was a half-hearted "Congratulations" as he tossed the bill onto the table. We were not asking for an engagement present, but maybe a little more enthusiasm to make our exciting night, even more exciting. It is disappointing to know that we will not be going back to the restaurant that we got engaged at. Pewter Rose is not the place to go for any occasion.

Pros: Beautiful decorating

Cons: Terrible service

gotta, wanna, needa, gonna go....again!

by beachguy

Hadn't been to the "rose" in quite a while, was a regular some years back - but with trying all the new restaurants somehow we just "forgot" about this old gem. We're glad we returned. We lucked out and were there on the first night of a new menu (for the summer I guess) and got to try a number of the new menu items. We were told that the chef has an entirely new staff .... it appears to be a good one as everything we had, appetizers, entrees, a salad and desserts were delicious. Our service was attentive - even though there were several good sized parties going on. Our food came quickly and the waitress was friendly. If you haven't been in a while- or have never been ... you'll wanna, needa, gotta go!

Pros: atmosphere, food

Cons: parking

Best Brunch

by amersinnc

I live about 35 minutes from this restarant, but I always want to get up early and do the drive just to have their brunch. Everything I've had from the menu has been good. My favorite was bananas foster french toast. Of course, you have to get the Mimosa as well. The service is always friendly too.

Pros: great food

Excellence...

by m_erana

The restaurant is a bit difficult to get to being up a flight of relatively steep stairs. But believe me the climb is well worth the effort. The staff was excellent. The food was unbelievable. Normal cheese samplers give you a couple ounces of each, we had the 3 cheese sampler and were quite impressed with the quantity we received. The Crab queso was an interesting sight on the menu, so we of course tried it and were impressed. The restaurant will be returned to again when I'm in town.

Pros: Food, Staff, Atmosphere

Cons: , Parking

Dissappointed

by bb75king2000

I checked out the restaurant based on the reviews I read here. I was completely dissappointed. The service was fine not bad but not great. The food was the real dissappointment. The seafood was tough and the salmon cake was too mushy. I was really dissappointed. I had high expectations going in.

My husband and I went for our 2nd anniversary (no we aren't young) and found the Pewter Rose to be a wonderful dining experience. The baked brie was excellent, I had chicken and he had grouper, both were outstanding. Desserts were even better.
and the service was outstanding. I'd recommend to anyone ( and have already recommended it to serveral family members and friends). We can't wait to go back!

Regularly Fantastic

by honeybeesweet

My husband and I eat here at least once a month - the food is almost always outstanding. The wines offered are very high quality, and we love having a variety to choose from. And the vegan and vegetarian entrees are what keep me coming back! We absolutely love "our" waiter and always try to sit in his section. Overall, one of my favorite restaurants in Charlotte.

Pros: Atmosphere, Great food, Veg. entrees

Not very good

by barn

Went there for dinner Saturday night and was disapointed. My girlfriend had the crab cakes. They were the worst ever....all breading and no crab. They could have been from a box. Yes, they were that bad. I had the "special" of the night which was not so special. The shrimp were like rubber and were way overcooked. The bread was also like a rock and not fresh. The best part of the night was the company and the drinks.

New menu is great

by blake

Had dinner last night, the spring menu was out and what great selections! The atmosphere envelops you in a whirlwind of "fancy" and the meals were beautifully plated and tasted great. We all had appetizers, salads and entrees (and a few desserts too) - couldn't have asked for more. While the stairs are long, the climb is worth while. Highly recommend to anyone who doesn't want the "same old" food or atmosphere. Well done PR!

Pros: atmosphere, free valet parking, salads & desserts

We went to Pewter Rose for Sunday brunch. The scones were delicious. They were like biscuit scones, but in a good way!! The food was really good too. The best thing about brunch was the $2.50 mimosa and bloody marys. You know a girl likes a bargain!!! I wouldn't recommend going peak hours.

Pros: outside seating

An Unfortunate Experience

by afgoldman

Saturday nights are our night out! Tonight we decided to go to Tutto Mundo for a drink and then Pewter Rose for dinner. Sounds like a good plan, hugh? Well, Tutto Mundo was closed for a private party and for the second time, PR had no record of our reservation. We did get seated and the service was fine but the food was terrible. We all agreed that it tasted like "hotel food" and our bill without wine ran $40.00 per person (we left before dessert and coffee) so it isn't cheap. My husband and I both got the signature buttermilk trout and it was terrible. Our friends got some pasta dishes --- bad. We wouldn't go back (maybe to sit in the bar to have a drink but NEVER for dinner). The atmosphere and location are so great...how can the chef churn out food that is SO AVERAGE!!!!

Pros: valet, nice bar, good service

Cons: food, food, food
