Service is excellent, facilities are clean and well maintained. I love this place! Been to several other gyms in the area and Kinetix has been the best by far. Staff consistently cleans and circulates throughout the gym. Plus my kids love the child care, they get upset when it is time to leave.

I don't know anything about the problems some people seem to have with canceling, but I paid upfront for a year and a half and got a great deal of about $23/month. I guess if you are the type who constantly needs to be pampered and likes

Could not be happier with my experience at Kinetix. Staff is always friendly and helpful. I've seen a lot of negative reviews, and I just don't get it. Hands down the best gym I've been to in years. Well worth the price

This gym has changed my life. I joined weighing around 260 lbs and I have since lost around 50 lbs in 8 months. At first I thought the price was pretty high for a gym, but after seeing my progress in the past 8 months, I feel as though it is well worth it. My trainer is absolutely AMAZING and I cannot wait to see where I am at in the next 8 months! Also, I am very impressed with the childcare center.

I am so disappointed in Carolina FItness (aka Kinetix). When I joined 2 years ago with my wife, we thought it was a good price and a reasonably decent gym. The nicest feature was the classes that were included in the membership. I never took advantage of them but my wife loved the lifting classes and instructors were / are awesome. But then machines started failing - badly! I always use the treadmill. All of a sudden 2/3 of all the treadmills were out of order and the 4 or 5 that worked were in use. The price in 2010 for new membership has gone up 60% than what we paid 2 years ago, and this AFTER THEY CLOSED DOWN OUR GYM FOR 3 MONTHS WITHOUT TELLING US FIRST!!!!!! That was the last straw. How can a company not tell you that they will close down for such a long time!! we ALL thought it would be about a week or so and were utterly SHOCKED when it kept going. There was a second option - another gym about 12 min away. But to do that to so many people who had a routine... was horrible. To not apologize... horrible. To act as though nothing bad was done because now the gym has a new coat of paint and floor polish... pathetic. And the prices are now so much more! For 1 person (2 year contract) it is $30 a month, and for 2 people it is ~$57 a month. Plus even though we are members we have to pay a service fee to renew! We are looking for other options as this point because the company is truly not a Carrboro, town-friendly company with good intentions. I say Carrboro needs to kick it out and let well-minded people start up something new.

I've been a member now off and on for close to 8 years but moved out of town and came back, so I had to sign a new contract. I'll be terminating that contract after the 2 years is up for the following reasons:

-after my credit card details changed and the direct bill bounced, no one ever bothered to contact me. Instead, they referred the issue directly to collection without any attempt whatsoever to contact me by phone, email. or in person at the gym.

-when I went in to resolve the issue, I was told they would do me a grand favor and clear things up with the collection agency if I paid them $160 on top of what I owed them at that point (sketchy?).

-I only need a gym for the weights and the cardio. I don't shower, but I do occasionally need to use the facilities when nature calls. I can't even bear to step into the men's bathroom at this point because of the odor and the sorry state of disrepair.

-After the yearly "assessment" fee that is tacked on to the monthly fee, there are never visible changes/improvements in the facility. I've asked folks at the counter what the assessment fee might be used for and whether I can talk to someone about that and have been treated with hostility about the question.

Even if you only go to the gym for the yoga classes (purportedly very good) or the weights (functional), I'd warn you against signing any contracts with these folks. Their dealings with members are both unethical and unfriendly. Stay away.

One star is to many for this place. Read the other reviews, there is nothing good to say about this place. The staff can be downright aggressive at times, and never helpful. They start out to get you to sign up by saying everyone gets a personal trainer, they are fixing up the place, etc. The truth is no one has ever asked me about help training, I have been there a year and nothing has been repaired. Yesterday, May 17,2010, was raining out and the roof was leaking so bad they had to have multiple buckets catching water from the ceiling. The men's locker room smells like a septic system that someone has overflowed, there is no tile on the floor, just dirty concrete. You could get cleaner by showering in a medical waste bucket than the showers here. There has been a leaking faucet on the left sink for a least 1 month. I don't mean a drip, but a steady flow. Also the equipment is always in a state of disrepair, yesterday of the 15 tread mills, 7 had out of order signs on them.
On top of it all they have a charge of $29.00 a year due in January for improvements. I don't know how many members they have but there are going to need 10,000 member at $29.00 apiece just to fix that roof. The pigeon feces alone will take quit some time to remove.
So in closing only sign up here if you like to workout in a bacterial quagmire, on broken equipment, with rude shady managers, no trainers, and water pouring through the roof.

Cons: Broken equipment, surly stage, holes in roof

This is the absolute worst gym I have ever been a member of in my entire life. The entire thing is a giant scam, but they don't care because of the very lopsided wording in the contracts, which renders you hopelessly locked into them. This is true of both the gym meberships and the personal training company operating there. As soon as you enter the door, they want to get you locked into a membership for two years, and then the trainer guy in the back office tries to lock you into a year of training on top of that. The price for all of it actually seems incredibly low, which should be your first warning sign that something isn't right. The reality is that half of those machines you see on the cardio deck don't work, and the ones that do have unreliable controls and features. The trainers are all awful, and the turnover is incredible so you will get bounced from trainer to trainer, without any control over who you work with. Other than that the place is filthy, has a sewer odor in the locker rooms, almost all the cables on the pulley machines are frayed, and their stability balls have needed to be reinflated for months. Why Carrboro keeps supporting this gym I'll never know, they don't do a thing for us.

I feel like I was scammed into this membership. I was told it was a free trial then found out I had to pay and was stuck for two years. I went back 30 minutes later after reading the fine print and they would not talk to me. Said I had to call an 800 number or talk to the manager at the Carboro location. I can't believe they went from so nice to so rude in 30 minutes. What a bad decision. I went over to the other Carolina Fitness in Carboro and was shocked at what a dump it was. Very dirty. Almost all the cadio was broken. With the same management at this new facility I'm sure it will be the same dump as the one in Carboro in less then two years. And I'll be stuck there! Don't make the same mistake I did!

Do NOT get a membership here. Don't think about it, don't enter the place, don't look at it, don't smell it. Run away, fast -- it's better exercise than you'll get on the broken machines, anyway.

I've been a member for several years, and have watched Carolina Fitness slowly decline from somewhat acceptable quality to completely useless. It's always been completely filthy. It's always had a fair amount of folks sneaking in to work-out late at night. It's always had a hefty percentage of broken machines. I didn't really mind -- I've spent many hours in grimy gyms, and rank locker rooms for the last 25 years. But, over the last two years, Carolina Fitness has sunk to a level of complete filth and mostly broken machinery. It is now worthless, unless I want to stare at broken cardio machines, and smell moldy filth.

There is no staff at night (not sure if this is official policy or not -- there used to be some ineffectual follks who worked the graveyard shift), when I attempt to work out. Although, someone does occasionally show up and shut himself up in the office, where I noticed he was watching porn (sorry, fella, it was none of my business till the gym became a cesspool). Despite the lack of staff at night, keep in mind that Carolina Fitness is actually closed on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights.

A fair amount of people sneak in late at night on weekdays. I often wonder who, or what, is lurking (or growing) in the locker room showers. When I first became a member, I actually used to shower in those stalls -- now, I wouldn't store manure in them.

Sometimes it's necessary to sneak in, since some nights the card reader is completely broken -- come to think of it, maybe the guys sneaking in are actually members who can't get the card reader to work (It's pretty easy to sneak in, actually -- save yourself the wasted money, and catch whatever diseases live on the machines for free!).

I haven't tried to cancel my membership yet (the place is frustratingly convenient to where I live), but no longer have any choice. Judging by other reviews, I don't expect canceling to be easy!

I joined recently and have to say I'm regretting it. The place smells like a giant hamper full of dirty clothes. Many times when i go to do cardio at night, I can't even get a machine because half of them seem to be broken.
As far as the services go, the various classes they offer seem ok. I got some complimentary personal training sessions with my membership, but unfortunately i got the feeling that those trainers really had no idea what they were doing. I've yet to try the spinning, I've heard the yoga is excellent.
Overall would not recommend.

The gym is falling apart and the owners completely ignore the facility. Half of the cardio machines don't work, many of the cables on the weight machines are frayed, and many weight machines are missing handles. The roof leaks and every time it rains you get minor flooding in places. All of the sales people are incredibly shady and try to lock you into long term contracts that you can't get out of. Oh and they use a third party billing company that isn't even located in the state, so if you get double billed or similar issue, good luck ever resolving it. Everything about the place is a giant scam. Avoid at all costs.

Joining Carolina Fitness has been the best thing I have done for myself in a long time. I LOVE working out there! The location in Carrboro is great, and they have a large, dedicated parking lot right in front of the huge gym building, so parking is easy They have LOTS and LOTS of cardio machines, so I have NEVER had to wait to work out on a machine. They also have LOTS of weight machines (and often multiples of the same machines), so I also have not ever had to wait to use a weight machine. There are also lots of free weights and multiple free weight options, benches, etc. I joined the gym specifically for the weight lifting with free weights, but I have ended up using the full range of workout options offered at Carolina Fitness. Most importantly, I have found the other members to be really friendly, low-key, laid back. It's fun to run into people I meet there. The group aerobic classes I have attended have been fun and excellent workouts; the instructors were fantastic (and in amazing shape-- inspirational.) The children's daycare/play room is amazingly expansive and has really cute, cheerful murals painted on the walls, and lots of toys and other activities for children. I am such an enthusiastic fan of Carrboro Fitness and only wish I had "discovered" it and joined years sooner. I signed up for a short-term, three-month paid in advance membership and was so pleased that it cost under $30 a month, with no initiation fee or other up-front fees. (I think it was closer to $26 a month.) I was surprised to read some of the other reviews here, because I very much enjoy working out at Carolina Fitness and tell everyone who is interested how positive my experience has been there. For me the ability to park with no hassle, work out using free weights, wide variety of weight machines and cardio machines (with no waiting), AND group classes of all sorts makes for a GREAT gym experience. Carolina Fitness has all the bells and whistles I need for a good, solid workout every day, and they are open LONG HOURS so I can work out early in the mornings on weekdays. I am not employed by Carolina Fitness and I don't know anyone in management there.: I just love working out there and have been feeling so healthy and strong since I started working out there.

I've never been a member of an establishment that has management as bad as Carolina Fitness. Althoughthe services provided are pretty below average, this is not the issue. The issue comes when trying to cancel your membership. Their contract is full of fine print that makes it pretty much impossible to cancel the membership without dying or moving to another country. Every member of management claims that they don't know what the other has said and accuse you of lying about it. I actually had a manager hang up on me while I was trying to discuss my account. Although I'm sure what they are doing is just below crossing the legal line, they have the shadiest tactics I have ever seen.

This place, I'll admit, used to be super sketchy and gross and dirty. But they have poured a lot of time and money and paint and new ceiling tiles into the place, and the staff have really improved in terms of attitude and competence. The classes are amazing, especially yoga. The childcare is great, I feel comfortable leaving my infant son there.

By FAR the best thing I have ever done for my health is to work w/ a personal trainer. Trainer Matt Golden at C.Fitness has a comprehensive understanding of physiology, anatomy, and optimal training techniques, and customizes workouts based on individual needs, goals, and limitations. In past, had spent thousands on medical treatment for shoulder injury-with no real improvement. A few sessions w/ Matt, who coordinated a plan w/ my MD, produced HUGE improvement. Matt not only makes workouts extremely efficient and effective, but enjoyable--which keeps me consistently in the gym and having fun at it. I am a lot stronger, more toned, and far more pain-free from a variety of sports-related injuries than before I started working with a trainer. Also, as a Type 1 diabetic, consistent efficient workouts greatly improve my blood sugar control. Based on the past 2.5 years training w/ Matt, I found that I spend far less money, with much better results, on a trainer than on MD visits and prescription meds. Matt has worked wonders w/ my 72 yr.old mother, my 13 yr.old nephew, and even my veteran weightlifting brother. I don't have time/inclination to become an expert in sports physiology training-rather, I leave it to Matt, and just enjoy working out with an expert.

Re: Carolina Fitness-- I like the fact that it is not a meat-market gym, and fits the needs of a wide diversity of clients. CF is a microcosm of the community, where you can see old friends and meet new ones. All the equipment that one could ever need is available, and the training staff is excellent.

Please be careful. I'm *also* one of those people stuck in a two month membership which is automatically debited to my account.

When I was signing up I was told that is the ONLY way to join. I was given NO other option. I have nothing else drafted automatically, and was shocked, but accepted because it was a good deal. I was NOT told that I was in such an INFLEXIBLE two-year commitment. The only way for me to get out of this membership is if I prove that I am disabled or move far, far away. Neither is the case, but I need to quit because I've switched jobs and come home much later and have no more time for the gym.

NOBODY is answering my questions about how to quit and the monthly drafts just keep being extracted from my account. The lady who manages the place maintains that she cannot answer any questions. The contacts that appear on the cancellation sheet are not responsive. You're just left to deal with this yourself, with nobody willing to explain the policy or help you. I'm so worried when I read the other reviews online.

I realize now that this will be a huge many-month ordeal to get out of this for me, which is all the better for the owners, since they can keep extracting their monthly bills from me!!!!

Please, please be careful. Also, please if you're a member, question their policies and help this business turn around their improper practices. More pressure needs to be put on this gym to be more open and honest with their customers. This is a Carrboro landmar, and we need to hold it accountable for what it does to the community members. Please help.

As a final note I have to say the following: I trusted them enough to give them access to monthly drafts from my account. That's my money we're talking about. Now they've turned all mysterious. I do not feel comfortable allowing such people access to my account and funds. The manager who works on location pretends that she has nothing to do with the funds. You cannot get anything done while there. That's a cheap trick to keep you in the dark and give you no options when trying to get membership questions answered. Just like someone else said: everyone refers you to someone else and nobody wants to deal with your problems!

It's a disaster.

Gyms rely on repeat customers. I've been in and out of gyms all my life, and will continue to be. They just lose the prospect of anyone coming back this way.

p.s. Are there ZERO star options?

Pros: Gym is affordable

Cons: Scammers. Trick you. Cannot cancel membership

Place should be condemned. Where does the facility fee go every time I'm charged at the beginning of year? BBB is right about this place - stay away!!!

This is a bare minimum gym. It smells bad (especially going toward the locker rooms), there will always be a few broken machines (not that you can't use free weights for most of the stuff anyway though), and it'll be kind of cramped. They seem to have too many benches and other equipment in the free weight area. It is kind of hard to move and the leaking ceiling that hasn't been fixed takes up far too much extra room. However, for 25/month on a relatively short contract, it is ok. I really just use the free weights and some of the cardio equipment so it isn't too bad for me. If you want ANYTHING more then the ABSOLUTE, BARE MINIMUM, go somewhere else. If you are self motivated and disciplined and just need somewhere to throw some weight around, it should be ok for you. Just make sure to negotiate your rate. They wanted my to pay in the neighborhood of 30-35/month at first but I got them to 25/month b/c they will match a better price if you get a "quote" from another "gym". I'd give it 2 1/2 stars if possible. But definitely NOT 3.

I should have known when I stopped in to check this gym out and they wouldn??t let me leave with a copy of the contract to read at home before I signed it that something was amiss. Nonetheless, I read the reviews online and decided that for what I needed- group fitness, a towel, and a place to wash my hands- the price was right. I took other commenters?? advice and paid for a year up front so they wouldn??t have access to my checking account and told myself it would be fine.

Unfortunately, I??ve slowly grown to loathe this gym.

I??m a simple person who doesn??t require bells and whistles by any stretch. But, when they??re out of towels (for over an hour!) I get irritated. When they let people save almost all of the non-broken bikes (do they ever service them?) for latecomers in spin class (even after you haul it as fast as you can after work to make it to class ten minutes early to get a bike with foot cages and a seat that actually adjusts) I get angry. Most gyms require a sign-in or a tag system to prevent this. And does it have to smell so bad all of the time? I wish I didn??t know all that I do about health affects of mold as I look at the ceiling tiles during Pump.

In fairness, the classes I??ve taken have all had rockin?? instructors. But really, Carolina Fitness? Some basic customer service would go a loooooooong way. Usually, independent businesses get this part right.

Meanwhile, I??m counting down the days until my contract is up (I refuse to just leave them even a month??s worth of my money) and join the YMCA.

I have been a member of Carolina Fitness now for a few years. I am in agreement that there is definite need for updates and repairs. The cardio equipment needs to be updated, and several of the weight machines need to be fixed. They have, however, recently replaced worn and cracked padding on several of the weight machines. On a positive note, I have taken several of the Les Mills classes that they offer and the classes and instructors are great!

On a personal note, the most positive experience I have had to date at Carolina Fitness was working with one of their certified personal trainers, Matthew Golden. His knowledge in the area of physical fitness and nutrition greatly impressed me, and he surpassed any expectations I had of what a personal trainer could do for me. Matthew not only helped me get back to my pre-pregnancy weight, he empowered me to become stronger and have more endurance than ever before.

I continue to workout at Carolina Fitness for a few reasons. My son loves the playroom and the child care staff, and often asks if it is a 'gym day'. The gym is close to my home, and the people I encounter on a regular basis there make it a positive experience.

I can not believe this establishment is still open. I agree with the rest of the reviewers, the owners are scam artist. When the owners and other employees have to resort to selling gym memberships in bars, you know unscrupulous business practice is not too far behind. There are many machines broken or not in tip top shape, and they have been this way for months. The place is filthy.

And, who are these reviewers who are giving rave reviews of this establishment? I am willing to bet these reviews are coming from the owners. Those who made statements like, "People who wrote negative reviews obviously did not read their contracts, and were rude attempting to resolve the issue" or those who stated "about the little TVs, well if you ask 100 people what comes to mind when you say gym 99 would not say TVs if you asked 100 people what comes to mind when you say couch potato" are not getting the crux of the negative reviews. If TVs are made available, then they are expected to work, right? Who wants to continue paying for a gym membership when their equipment is broken. This shows disrespect to their customers by offering them mediocre service. If all equipment was working and the leaky roof is fixed, do you think there would be a decrease in people attempting to cancel their membership? Of course, there would be a decrease. Also, whoever wrote that review on July 2007, seems nonchalant and arrogant just like the owner's wife.

As for the rudeness of some of these reviewers, I can not fathom all of these people making these things up. The owners were very nonchalant with me when I asked about canceling my membership. The wife referred me to a billing place out of Atlanta, and believe me, I have talked to many of those Atlanta representatives. They were very nice to me each time. They did not have one positive thing to say about the owner and his wife. In fact, I was told how to get out of my contract all without moving over 30 miles away from the gym.

My best advice, the price of membership is not worth the grief. Stay away like the plaque.

I don't know anything about the problems some people seem to have with canceling, but I paid upfront for a year and a half and got a great deal of about $23/month. I guess if you are the type who constantly needs to be pampered and likes to imagine you're living in L.A. or New York or something, this place is not for you. But if you are budget-conscious, don't need frills, and are just interested in EXERCISING and keeping fit, this is a great place. The yoga teachers are some of the best in the area -- that fact alone makes this place a great deal, as I could spend more than my monthly gym payment on just two yoga classes at some of the yoga studios around town.

This is probably the lowest quality of gym I have joined but with that all my other gyms have been over the top fancy and had a lot of services and items I never used or quite frankly needed. I def paid the price for the extra stuff in the other gyms that I didn't use. Carolina Fitness has exactly what you need if you are someone who does not require a lot of attention and assistance in your workout. The abundance of cardio machines is something to love as well as the simplicity of the gym. Yes it is a little grungy but the value is good for what you get. I cautiously went in after reading a lot of reviews on-line and found that it was all I need in a gym. Take advantage of their new month to month payment plans though. The long term contracts just seemed a little do dependent on the fine print if you catch my drift.

I have been a member for over 10 years and the fitness center has changed drastically since the new owners took over. Carolina Fitness looks sooo much better, they keep the equipment up, and keep everything working to the best of their ability, which to me is very important. There are Great people, Great classes, and people who really care.

All the people who wrote negative comments previously obviously didn't read their contracts, and do their part to get it resolved, not to mention your comments are simply rude. I have been around a long time and know alot of people who have come and moved. They never had a problem cancelling, I am sure they followed proper procedure and had no problems. I know all the people there, and they would never purposely try to take advantage of anyone.

I love this gym, you all are great! Thanks for always being there for the members!!!

I have been a member for about 3 years, since I moved to Carrboro within walking distance of the gym. Totally different experience from my former gym, which was brand new, high-priced, and beautiful--but Carolina Fitness has all the quirky charm of the town surrounding it.

Yes, pigeons are nesting in the entrance overhang and sometimes big chunks of yucky stuff fall out from there. Yes, there are really big potholes in the parking lot and a junkyard of abandoned equipment behind the building. Yes, it kind of smells bad and stuff is broken a lot.

It doesn't really matter because the people who work there are always super-friendly; the gym members are interesting, fun-loving people from every imaginable walk of life; and the class instructors are talented and reliable. I pay one lump sum every two years and overall my membership is an excellent value. I wouldn't trade my place in this special little piece of the Carrboro community for anything!

I pay one lump sum every two years and overall my membership is an excellent value. I wouldn't trade my place in this special little piece of the Carrboro community for anything!

I've been a member of this gym for over 6 years now. I pay 2 years at a time, as does my wife, always the same price: a little over $400 for 2 years, which is about $17 a month, with childcare and all the classes. That is an incredible deal, considering one yoga class in Carrboro can be $15. The staff members that deal with payments and memberships can definitely be like car dealers, but I give the terms: 2 years, here is what I'm paying, with all the classes and child care, take it or leave it. They always take it, since it is 2 years without any hassle or billings (no extra expenses for them). Even if you leave early, you won't be out much money compared to what you would pay in another gym. Avoid the monthly charges - that could be a big hassle. Some friends have paid more for the same terms, so it is worth trying to bargain them down.

The classes have very good instructors. Carrboro is flowing over with creative, athletic people, and that is reflected in the classes. The yoga is excellent. Our kids have always enjoyed the child care..

This is no fancy place, but they're dealing with a very bad building, and have fixed it up to some degree. The owners live nearby, and this is not a chain anymore, so your money is staying local. Many residents, myself included, have no desire to drive to work out. Save the environment, and walk or ride your bike!

I wanted to join my local gym for a few months after an injury that kept me off my bike. I was pleasantly surprised (and, I see now, very naive) that an employee so willingly agreed, saying I had only to request and send in a cancellation form whenever I decided to cancel. I got this in writing , but guess what, their letter didn't really mean what I took it to mean...The gym has even ignored a "cease-and-desist" letter from my attorney! I am cancelling the card from which they take my payments, bad credit be damned.

Don't believe anything that anyone who works there tells you. Believe in the fine print as that is what you will be held to (no matter what anyone says otherwise). Believe that human compassion does not exist. Believe that you have been screwed!

I go to Carolina Fitness for a few reasons:
1. it's affordable (what I pay equals what I get)
2. it's close to home
3. it has childcare and my kids like going there

This is not a fancy gym, but I have been going there for 2 years and am satisfied with what I get for what I pay.

The childcare is nothing but babysitting, but the staff has watched my children and kept them safe and my kids really enjoy going there.

The bathrooms, particularly the shower curtain liners often need replacing, so if you are looking for a luxury shower, this may not be the place for you. However, I have always had hot water in the shower.

The classes are great - great teachers!

I have not had any problems with my contract with them, but I have always requested copies and kept them on hand for the duration of my contract.

My husband's gym is a little cleaner and locker rooms are carpeted etc., but it's farther from our home and he pays double. So, bottom line, you get what you pay for.

Carolina Fitness is in a good location and has convenient parking. The main benefit is the availability of equipment and machines and flexible hours. If you are willing to commit for a couple of years, you should get a rate between $20-$30/month. The main disadvantage is the cleanliness. The other major disadvantage is if you are not able to commit to such a period. Watch out for the workers trying to make a ridiculous deal, and then saying "corporate" "is willing to take it down". They act like used car salesman playing good cop/bad cop. It is really comical. Be sure to read the contracts very carefully, or these guys will get you.

The high schoolers that work at the desk at Carolina Fitness are cute and know nothing.

The people that patronize Carolina Fitness are colorful and friendly.

The machines are reasonable, classes good, not too dirty for a cheap gym.

The people that run the gym are scam artists. Their contracts are poorly written and their interpretations of them are completely out of line. Beware that 24 months means 27, and if you plan to cancel before that you should start the paperwork process 6 months in advance. And even when you think it has been taken care of, follow up with them daily.

Equipment was always broken. Good luck finding a treadmill that works. Childcare was hit or miss and the childcare room was filthy. Nevermind the childcare workers don't speak english. Then there is the staff. I was staying in Chapel Hill for a few months while moving from Indiana when I got this membership. When I told the salesperson that I would only be in the area for 3-6 months I was told there would be no problem canceling my contract. I was told they only charge fees to people who are canceling for no reason. Yeah, right. I have relocated some 50+ miles away and they want me to pay a fee nearly double the membership cost to get out of my contract. Don't bother reading the fine print, just don't go!

Equipment was OK - pretty bare bones, but workable. Yoga class was top notch and had a loyal following. This gym will work out for you OK if you never plan to cancel your membership. Have been round and round and round with these guys trying to end my contract. I'd recommend joining the YMCA or someplace else just for that reason alone. Whatever benefit there is in joining is outweighed by the hassles and cost trying to end your membership.

Yes, the equipment is often broken and the place is kind of gross in general, but the real trouble starts when you try to cancel your membership. It is suppose to be a 30-day cancellation process (I was moving out of state), but they will manage to make it at least 90 days. They consider the 30 days to begin whenever they get around to dealing with your paperwork. Additionally, when you ask a billing question, everyone acts as if the whole process is out of their hands. Seriously, stay away from these scam artists.

I have been going to this gym for over 10 years. Started when it was Gold's Gym. It has definitely had some bad moments, but currently the owners are great, and the equipment is in good repair. The Body Pump, Body Attack, pilates, yoga, and spinning classes are all excellent--I haven't tried the others. The landlord for the building is pitiful about making building repairs, but that isn't the fault of the owners. The only downside is that the showers aren't cleaned regularly enough, and the shower curtains get kind of grungy because of this. But there is always hot water (contrary to an earlier post).
If you are looking for fancy, this is not your gym. If you are just looking for a good workout, you should check it out.
