First of all, every single dish I've ever received at Bella Monica has been saturated with oil. Just because you use a lot of olive oil in your dishes doesn't make them Italian, just unhealthy.\r

Great food and if you are gluten-free, don't miss out on this great place! I think they need a bigger space, lol. \r

So great to have a place that knows how to treat customers. They go out of there way to make sure folks are enjoying themselves.

This little restaurant is awesome. The food is delicious and reasonably priced. There is a definite neighborhood feel and the wait staff is fabulous. Good food, excellent service, reasonable prices - could you ask for more?

The decor is fantastic, the service is super and the food is outstanding. My favorite is the pizza but everything I have had has been wonderful! Usually it is packed but is well worth the wait. I recommend this place to everyone I meet.

This is the only restaurant I have ever recommended, prior to eating there. I heard so many good things about Bella Monica I recommended it and couldn't wait to go for my birthday celebration. We were greeted at the door by the manager who then brought my husband and I a glass of wine for our wait. We were seated in about 20 minutes and my husband informed the waitress it was my birthday. They then decorated the table with birthday confetti - it was so much fun! The atmosphere was great, not too loud, but very cozy. And the food - AMAZING. I love good Italian, and this just goes beyond any other restaurant we usually visit. The eggplant appetizer was fabulous and the sun dried tomato and portabella lasagna was to die for. After dinner they gave me a free birthday cannolli which was great. When my husband and I left we couldn't stop smiling and commenting that it was the best meal we have had, and the most fun we have had at a restaurant in a long time. We will be back many times - Bella Monica is now our top restaurant.

We're professionals (44 & 50) and have eaten here many times and have always had a great experience. We don't know the manager, but he always warmly greets us and thanks us for coming as if we were friends. The wait staff and bartenders have always been equally as friendly. My husband is very critical when it comes to his food and wine, and we've never been less than impressed to be served very tasty, reasonably priced entrees made with fresh ingredients. Having lived in big cities, we enjoy the atmosphere, but I think it's more of an adult than family restaurant, especially at night, though I'd drag our 4yo along if needed. I highly recommend.

Pros: Terrific food, wine list, atmosphere & staff

Cons: Always crowded, reservations needed

Bella Monica has delicious food at reasonable prices. I've eaten there multiple times and never had a bad dish. The staff are always very friendly, helpful and on top of things (my glass is never empty, food arrives promptly, servers are nice but not overwhelmingly so) and the place is always very well staffed. From outside, it doesn't look like much, but the atmosphere inside is very intimate and comfortable and the food is just so good (and you WILL have leftovers).

My wife and I had never dined here before, and wanted to try a new place to celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary. I called to make reservations for a Saturday night around noon the same day. I was told they were already booked from 4:45 to 10pm that night, so we made plans for an early afternoon dinner at 4:30. The host asked if we were celebrating anything, so I told them about the anniversary.

When we arrived and gave our name, we were escorted over to a table that had been decorated nicely for a romantic dinner. The host congratulated us on our 10 year anniversary and made polite conversation with us. The waitress soon came and also made us feel right at home.

We ordered the roasted garlic bread for an appetizer and it was fantastic!

My wife ordered a flatbread and I ordered the portabella and sun-dried tomato lasagna, both were excellent.

To our surprise we received a complementary cannoli. We were sure glad to get that because it turned out to be the best cannoli we've ever had.

My wife is Italian and we have had some really good Italian food over the years. What we had at Bella Monica was on a league of its own. We loved the variety of the menu. I read every negative review prior to dining here and I'd have to say I really don??t have anything but the best to say. This is not a chain and you should feel the difference as soon as you walk in the door.

Bottom line: The staff is exceptional, the food is fantastic, and I'd highly recommend to anyone. Just call for reservations ahead of time.

Every time I eat dinner here, I have the best meal. It's better to make a reservation (especially reservations) however we have gone without a reservation and have gotten in with little wait. Anyone I recommended Bella Monica to has enjoyed it. The eggplant rollatini is the best! Great wine selection. Will always be a great meal.

We dinned at Bella Monica on a very busy night.
Although we didnt have a reservation they made us feel like honored guests and even served everyone waiting treats at the door. We ordered pumpkin ravioli and eggplant rollatine. FANTASTIC! Our server paired the wine perfectly with our food. I cant wait to go back.

This is one of only two restaurants in the area I have EVER recommended to friends. It's sort of a hidden gem that many don't know about aside from the locals. It's tucked away in an older shopping center next to a Harris Teeter..... Fridays and Saturdays tend to be very busy and book up in advance so call ahead to make reservations days before going. It's worth it ! Great service and food with a price that is very reasonable.

Keep up the good work !

We've lived in Raleigh for four years and are now moving. We are SO sad to be leaving such a fantastic restaurant! It has been our favorite Italian restaurant. Make that our favorite restaurant of any kind here in Raleigh. We have yet to find better service, better quality of food, and better priced dishes. My father in law is Italian and says it's as authentic as it gets!

The staff always makes an effort to remember you when you return. They recognize special occasions with decorations and free desserts. Very pleasant and well kept. Decor is really neat...you definitely don't feel you're in Raleigh! But most important the food is outstanding. The timing of service is perfect. The quality and size of the dishes are impecable. We have eaten here for four years and have NEVER had a bad meal. I can't imagine anyone saying a negative word about this restaurant. The owners put a lot of pride and care into this establishment and it shows.

THIS IS A RALEIGH MUST! IT IS SIMPLY THE BEST!

I have worked in restaurants and been to restaraunts all over the world and Bella Monica is one of the better places to eat at. The staff is overwhelmingly courteous and full of energy, if there is a reason why a table is not addressed properly it is because it is slammed, which last time i checked is a good thing and usually a good sign to new patrons. I introduced myself to the owner because i was impressed with what he has done with his location and I assure anyone reading this, he is a very successful GROWN man who knows exactly what he is doing. The food is delicious, and they have a knack for remembering who you are when you come back and treating you like your a local, if you don't check this out you should hang with carlasword at the olive garden.

My husband and I went there without a reservation and we were greeted by a "frazzled" manager. She didn't seem to have any idea what was going on. Then a young, sloppy male manager came to help us and he spoke to us like we were kids. We are well into our 40's. Offensive.

Then the multiple staff who served us at our table were young, immature and not professional.

Kids are running this place.

The food seemed to be frozen;not sure.

I will never go to this place again!!!!!!!!!

Maybe that is a bit strong, but this place is absolutely great. It can be crowded, but with reservations, you will be seated quickly. The bar area can be crowded because of all the tables, but the restaurant is still quiet and pleasantly lit. The bread appetizer is so delicious!!! I've had baked ziti and pizza from here, and I loved both. A great dinner out!

I have eaten here several times over the years and am surprised with the cult following it now has. I guess everyone wants a little place they think they only know about that is trendy and difficult to get into.
The pizza is OK. I'd pick Lilly's, Lynnwood or Hot Point over it. The other food I have had there is overpriced and pretty awful. The lasagna tasted like the dish at the old Rams Head Ratskeller in Chapel Hill.. runny and no flavor.
Also, if you end up sitting near the door expect people's rear ends on the back of your head all night as they wait for tables.
The managers are very nice, though, and the waitstaff at least tries although they are usually too busy to properly attend to you.
I'd still recommend going and see what you think. A lot of people on here certainly enjoyed it. We do have a lack of good Italian restaurants in the area.

I could see why this place is popular. Atmosphere was nice, part of town and the restaurant was well kept. They had an absolutely great wine selection but that did little to save the food. I wouldn't call it horrible, but as someone who has been a "food buff" for most of my life, I felt it should have been fresher, bigger portions, and with a better presentation. I understand that half the experience of eating out for most people is atmosphere, and for that I will commend the staff. However, if you want good pizza and fresh pasta with obviously carefully homemade sauces, other restaurants surpass. Try Stella Mare or Strombolis for example, lesser atmosphere, better food.

My family moved to Raleigh last fall and we have enjoyed Bella Monica from day one. A friend recommended the restaurant and was jealous that we had moved to a neighborhood within walking distance! From the first time we walked in their front door, we were hooked. The hosts are always friendly and accommodating. Our waitress "Moment" was so lovely to our family and always remembers my sons' drink orders! She's incredible! We've been back several times and have also ordered takeout and have never been disappointed. My husband is a bit of a wine snob and has been impressed with the selection offered. I usually don't write reviews but I was compelled to write one yesterday after having a poor experience at another restaurant, so I needed to balance it with a positive one for Bella Monica. I do recommend making reservations even for a small lunch party as the place fills up quickly.

The Edward's Mill Rd area is not my usual stomping ground. But today I just happened to be in the area at lunch time and drove through the shopping center at the corner of Edward's MIll and Duraleigh. I noticed at one corner of the building an inconspicuous little sign..."Italian". Hummm...now I could enjoy some good Italian fare...so a took a chance and went inside Bella Monica. Its a long narrow restaurant that probably seats ~60...maybe more. With a little smile I asked the hostess if this would be "the best Italian food I've ever eaten"...and she came right back with "absolutely". I've eaten at Patsy's in Manhatten which was ole "Blues Eyes" fave (that's Frank Sinatra for the uninitiated)...so I do have some idea what a great Italian Restaurant should be. The restaurant was quite busy, but I was seated right away. My server was named "Moment"...a bright, cheerful, "bubbly" young lady. My drink order was immediately taken, arriving back in only moments. I had been leaning towards ordering a calzone...but after hearing the description of one of the daily specials...a flatbread with creamy crab base, mozzarella, kalamata olives, and artichokes...I went with that since it really sounded quite different...I love new foods. Bread with a nice drizzle of EVO was served to kwell my appetite until the flatbread arrived. And arrive it did in only a few short minutes. The presentation included a really nice dipping sauce of mayo and diijon mustard with some other seasoning included. That first bite of crab flatbread!!!!! OMG...just incredible. You have to try it. The hostess and my server "Moment" came by often to make sure I had everything needed. Incredibly friendly and attentive service paired with perfect food that is so delizioso makes this "best kept Raleigh restaurant secret" a "MUST" on your next eating out excursion.

Cons: Since seating is somewhat limited, there could be a wait...But worth the wait.

I recently dined here (11-26-08) for the first time and it exceeded my expectations. I didn't have a reservation and my friend and I walked in and it was packed. We were approached by a manager named Chris and he greeted us with a smile and after learning that we didn't have a reservation, he proceeded to tell us it would be approximately 30 minutes and he was so friendly and supportive in sharing with us this news and he alone, made us decide to wait; despite the both of us starving at the time. He even "promised" to work hard to get us seated and even apologized once for the lack of availability.(I've never been treated that well by a host before; he made us feel like a regular and I'm sure this place has lots of them)

After sitting down and ordering, it didn't take long to realize what all the buzz was about. I ordered the Ziti and my girlfriend had the Mussels in a cream sauce and we shared them both and it was amazing. The same manger checked on us and "thanked us for waiting." The wine was good and priced very "friendly."

I am originally from Seattle, a great restaurant city and this place was one of the best I have dined at in my two years as a resident of the triangle. I am a manger at a very prominent engineering company and I currently live in Chapel Hill, and this is worth the drive. With the holidays approaching and the economy the way it is, buy a friend or family a $50 gift certificate and they'll have an amazing dinner!!!!

I had brought my boyfriend there for his birthday, and I was let down.

I sympathized with my waitress because she had 5 tables, but she got the drink orders wrong, and it took 20 minutes to correct the problem. We saw her every once in a while. I was definitely not impressed with the service.

The shrimp was very tough, and still had the tails, and pasta was oily. The stuffed shells (which you only get 3 of) were drowning in a bowl of sauce.

they treated us well and were friendly, but i was disappointed because i heard such great things about this restaurant. Perhaps we just went at an extremely busy time, or they were having an off day. I didn't leave angry or upset, but not as pleased and I'd like!

My husband brought me to Bella Monica this past Thursday night (10-30-08) for my birthday and we were completely astounded by the quality of food and service we were provided. We have been telling our friends and colleagues ever since about the exquisite meal we were served. The manager, bartender and waitress were extremely friendly and professional. We also loved that one of the chefs brought the food out hot! My husband ordered the pumpkin soup special for an appetizer and after his first bite he froze in place. He then slowly turned to me and said "I think this is the best thing I have ever eaten". I quickly asked the waitress for a spoon! When I tasted it, I had the same response. The flavor, texture and spice were perfection. We have eaten in restaurants from Tuscany to Thailand, and had never had that reaction before. We have eaten a lot of excellent food in our lives but that was superb. The rest of the meal was fantastic as well. I had the mussels with a wonderfully flavorful sauce that was soaked up with perfect, fresh and crispy bread. We were so full after the entrees that we thought we couldn't eat dessert, but when they brought us the complimentary Birthday Canoli with a candle in it, we tried it....and it was heaven! Fantastic coffee and espresso to go with it, too. They made my birthday meal one I will always remember!

Went to Bella Monica for my first date, per my request, and was truly impressed! Being a server myself for the past 15 years, (the past 10 in fine dining) I am often dissapointed when dining out. Bella Monica is what every restaurant should be... the staff is friendly & knowledgable, the food is delicious, the service is superb and the owners are great people who really care about their guests happiness, as well as their employees. (I know several people who work there.) Did I mention the food?!? The BEST Italian food I've had in N.C. Being from N.Y., good Italian food is hard to find.

They were very organized and everyone raved about the food and how they loved it. Great Food and Wonderful Service. Thank you so much!!!!

A great place to take a date or family out to dinner. They have some of the best pizza, calzone and a Italian food around. Seating can be tight, so make a reservation! If they made the restaurant bigger they would pack in the crowds! This is definitely a place to try!

While visiting Raleigh recently, I dined at Bella Monica on a recommendation from some friends. I was extremely pleased with the experience. The food was authentic and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. I ordered the eggplant rolatini and it was divine. The eggplant was cooked perfectly- crisp on the outside and tender throughout. It melted in my mouth! The server was very knowledgeable about wine and suggested a glass of Dolcetto with bright acidity that perfectly complimented the meal.
I will undoubtedly return to Bella Monica the next time I'm in Raleigh and highly recommend it to food lovers everywhere!

This place has a great decor and a good mood and ambiance, but the food is blah. The pizza is subpar. It's too doughy, and it is it nothing like Italian pizza at all. Our toppings were so sparse that it was like eating a cheese pizza (when we asked for pepperoni and sausage). The salads were, as another reviewer described, just plates of lettuce. This is probably the only authentic Italian dish in the whole restaurant. The wine selection is decent and not too expensive. This is an ok place to go for a drink or maybe an appetizer, but I can't say that I liked my meal all that much. I didn't think much of the service either.

Pros: good wine list, appetizers are ok
