Great atmosphere and location; food good, but recently was served a lukewarm plate of Moravian Chicken pie which was neither palatable or safe from a food safety point of view. They came and re-heated it but was still not as hot as it should have been. However the bread is great even if they only give you a small taste. Tea is not sweetened and you have to sweeten it yourself after the fact....they should offer sweet tea as an option for those who prefer it. All in all, however I highly recommend them and always take out of town guests there.

If you are going to be up in the Winston-Salem area and especially if you are visiting Old Salem, you will want to stop by this restaurant. It is very nice, servers are in period costumes and food was good. I recommend you check it out.

It is my favorite restaurant in Winston-Salem. It is located in Old Salem, and is very rustic and has an old world charm. The menu rotates from the wonderful moravian pie (under $8) to more savory fare. My favorite is the southern chicken breast in peach gravy, with fresh vegetables. I would recommend reservations on weekends, but during weeknights you can usually be seated quickly without wait. There are two floors, and no elevator. Also, the bathrooms are located on the top level and are very small (like in an airplane, but more privacy). However, that being said...it is a wonderful night out in a distinctive and historic site. The food is wonderful and service (in period garb) is very good. The wine menu is very good, and the servers are very knowledgeable and can make recommendations. I highly recommend the Salem Tavern.

This restaurant is located in the heart of Old Salem in downtown Winston-Salem. It is in an old restored brick building. There is an up and downstairs to the restaurant. The rooms are small, but the ambiance and feel is wonderful. The day that we were there for lunch there was some problem is the kitchen and the quiche that some ordered was not brought to the table warm, but our wait staff quickly got the problem taken care of. There is just a couple of street parking spaces but you can park in the big Old Salem parking lot and walk the short distance to the restaurant.
