I moved to Chapel Hill in 2006 and the hills here took a serious toll on my old commuter bike. I used the excuse to get a new one, which I bought at the Clean Machine in Carrboro (the sister store to the Bicycle Chain on Franklin) a few months after I arrived. The staff was very helpful in filling my needs, and the bike was very reasonable priced. They spent a lot of time with me. The salesman asked me my requirements, told me some other things I might consider based on what my needs, pointed out several bikes that fit those requirements, and then told me to take each out on a test ride before I bought one. I bike to work, so my bike takes a bit of a beating. The one time in the past 4 years I've taken it in for repairs, turnaround was faster than promised and the rates were surprisingly cheap. The first time I took my bike in for routine maintenance, the service staff walked me through how to do things myself, and I've done my own maintenance ever since. I've gone in twice now for little bits of hardware I've lost, and both times the service department just handed me the bolt or spacer that I needed. He even pointed me to a box of tools they have sitting out for customers to use to fix their bikes!

This is a great bike shop. If you need a bike, or gear, or a repair, make the Bicycle Chain and the Clean Machine your first choice.

I took my jogging stroller here to get the front tire fixed. The repair was quick and reasonably priced. The store isn't very child friendly and a bit crowded, but that was kind of expected.

I brought my mountain bike here, after one of the gears broke. I was extremely pleased when the staff at Franklin Street cycles repaired it on-site, and helped fine tune other parts of my bike. The price was cheap and I walked out satisfied. If you need any repairs for your bike, or even just want to browse through their selection of bikes, this is a great place to start!

Franklin Street Cycles serves most students with bikes at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Since they know most students are pretty low on money, they usually will patch up pop tire tubes for free and adjust alignment of spokes. The customer service is really friendly and quick. Students need their bikes most of the time, so bikes are usually returned within 24 hours. They replace tires, clean the chain, reoil the chain, and adjust the brakes. I would depend on them for my biking needs.

PROS: Friendly service, quick for those in need.
CONS:

I bought my bicycle here and it's still in great condition. The store itself is a little small and packed with bicycles and gear. It's location is good on Franklin St, it's just a short walk from campus. The sales staff were really friendly and helpful. The prices are average for the quality of bikes that they offer. I recommend checking out the smaller version of some bikes if you're a good height and weight for it, as often they sell for much less.

As a newbie to road biking, I wasn't even sure what to look at and compare as I was trying different bikes. Unlike most stores that just hand you a bike to test ride around the parking lot, John at Franklin Street Cycles took the time to answer all my questions, adjust each bike before my test ride, suggest a good route, and most importantly, told me what to look & feel for as I rode. When shopping for a bike, its as important to find a store with staff that you feel comfortable working with as it is to find a bike that's fun to ride. Franklin Street Cycles gets high marks in both categories.
