Terrible Experience. We took our little Dog to Reach on a Sunday afternoon. She had diabetes and could not stop vomiting. We had all medical Records. After waiting approx 1.5hrs,Vet finally saw us and gave treatment estimate of $1200 to $1500. Vet wanted to keep 24 hours and do blood test every 2hrs..When we said we couldn't afford Vet said "well if you had Insurance". They had Ins brochures all around office. We decided on a shot for vomiting and antibiotic shot since she had UTI. Total bill was $212. We checked out at 4:30, checked in @12:30. So 4 hours of mostly waiting. If you have DEEP POCKETS, then you might be okay with their treatment plan...

I have used Reach a few times in the past and although they have skilled vets, they seem to be more concerned with profit than helping the animal and their fees are outrageous for the most part. Great place to go for an emergency but only if you have deep pockets.

I've had friends tell me about REACH before. Never used them until we needed after hour care. They were very professional, caring, and polite. I didn't have a long wait time and the fees very extremely reasonable.

I can't stand this vet. I have taken a few animals here over the last couple of years for lack of any other options (late hours, etc). They take a quick look and produce the longest, most expensive "treatment plan" they can come up with. My dog was attacked by another dog and had puncture wounds on his neck. He was alert and seemed to be ok, but I worried about the punctures, infection, etc. After producing me a $850 "treatment plan", I said NO THANKS. Told them to clean him up and give him pain meds, and we waited a few hours and went to my own vet (who took care of my dog for less than $100).

I somehow doubt they have the overhead that requires them to overcharge as they do. Their primary focus seems to be MONEY. I have yet to talk to any vet or vet tech that spent longer than 10 minutes total with me, and all have a less-than-compassionate attitude.

This place is awful.

My dog was diagnosed with kidney disease at REACH and he was given the best medical care I could ask for. Each and every person that I encountered treated my dog as their own. They explained to me through each process what was being done and why. These folks clearly care about what they do, they are professional and dedicated. I have been to other emergency hospital and REACHs prices are significantly less and they provided better care. The prices at REACH are more comparable with what I pay at my regular veterinarian. Thank you REACH for the wonderful care you gave to Jake.

We took our cat to the vet tonight for stitches after he was attacked by another cat. I called and tried to get some sort of ballpark estimate on cost before driving down there from Weaverville, but they couldn't help me out. So, my husband took him, they told him he could go to a nearby restaurant and they would call him when they decided how much to charge...they called him and said $400! This for a 1 1/2 inch, clean tear. Our regular vet would charge us $75 to fix it up. I could understand $250 or even $300, but not $400. That is outrageous. So we are bringing the cat home after paying them a $75 exam fee, and I will fix him up with liquid stitches and betadine. If the need for an emergency vet ever comes back up, I am going to the one in Hendersonville.

This hospital in one of the best emergency Vet. They were kind, considerate, timely, explained the situation, cordial, professional and very knowledgeable. I should point out fees were reasonable.
Please understand there are overhead costs, physician & nurses fees.Taxes like equipment tax, building tax, workers comp, health insurance for staff, utility charges, accounting fees, and more tax.
Uncle Sam is not paying, this is not Medicaid clinic.
There is no FREE LUNCH. People who complain about the cost I suggest find another place like this. You get what you pay for.

It would be true to tell the world that Reach is very expensive. However, the place is super clean, the folks are nice and there is no doubt that their primary concern was my dog and keeping it alive. The dog was first treated and taken care of before i even paid a dime. Once the dog was stable they made some suggestions, presented them on paper (both a super expensive option and a less expensive option). I felt very positive about my experience and will give them the highest marks for their professional efforts toward myself and the dog i love with all my heart.

I have to start by saying I am a nurse and I am involved in rescue with a reputable organization. REACH hospital is only out for money and does not care about the animals. The Care Credit (Credit Card) that they offer is available online and can be used at any vet or human dentist. It requires a VERY high credit score for approval. If you do not get approved and cannot pay the full amount UPFRONT BEFORE TREATMENT, they will send your pet home to die. No payment plans, no collateral, no discounts, etc. Plus, their fees are ridiculously high. I spent 600 dollars last night for testing only for a sick kitten and didn't have money left for treatment. Although, the doctor doesn't know what's wrong. (Nausea, vomiting). He wanted to do exploratory surgery for 1600-2000 dollars upfront to look for possible foreign bodies despite the xray being clean. No compassion for pets at all. Money or death for your animals.

On Feb. 1, 2010 we had to do the unthinkable at midnight and put our beloved dalmation mix down. I honestly dont think we could have gotten threw it if it was not for the kindness of the employees there. They were there to make it as painless as possible and I will forever be gratefull to them.. They seem to have the compassion that even human medical offices need.. I would not even consider going anywhere else in the future.. Thank you to all the Drs and employees who where there to help me through a really hard time.. Thank you.. you all are true angels

My cocker spaniel, Babie Cakes, had a tradegy yesterday and is at Reach tonight. She is 4 and never been in a cage. She is spoiled rotten of course. I knew I had to leave her there so the doctors could save her life. I have never experienced such a warm, loving, and compassionate experience, and I have had alot of experiences. When I went to visit Babie Cakes this morning, she kept running back and forth to the vet technicians who worked there. She was wagging her tail and wanted to be near them. Is that not a tell tale???? Also, not only are the doctors extremely professional, knowledgable, and compassionate, but they actually call me when they say they are going to call with updated reports. I really can't remember that last time I have been called at the exact time I was told I would be called. I went back tonight to visit Babie Cakes, and Reach was very busy I guess with it being New Year's Eve. I just thought about how these doctors and technicians sacrifice their holidays every year and work night shifts. The only emergency clinic is Reach, and there are not alot of choices like in a big city. Thank the good Lord for them and thank goodness our only emergency hospital is such a pleasant experience. GOD BLESS YOU ALL AT REACH!!!!
................from Maggie Valley, NC.................P.S. We think Babie Cakes will be able to come home tomorrow.

I've had a few experiences with REACH. It is the only animal hospital in WNC that I'm aware of, so it pretty much has the entire market share.

I've interfaced with a few of its vets during various emergency visits, and - quite frankly - I've never felt the "compassion." The vet techs were warm and friendly. The vets were aloof and quite "clinical." In fact, my regular vet remarked that he'd never been impressed with the folks at REACH, with the exception of one vet that came from out-of-state.

The worst experience I had included taking my dog in, as I noted he wasn't acting normal. Without going into great detail, the attending vet entirely dropped the ball and factually missed an obvious issue my dog had. I have proof and even bounced it off my vet. My dog died. He couldn't have been saved had the REACH guy figured it out, but still.... He suffered an extra x-amount of hours until death.

Also, REACH probably has major overhead vs. certain other places in the region, so its prices will most likely be higher. I suggest that folks research and establish a relationship with a local vet that maintains emergency service hours.

For example, I believe Kevin N. McKisson of All Saints Animal Hospital in Hendersonville makes himself available for after-hours emergency calls. Don't quote me on that--we took one of our dogs to him and he was a delight. We live too far away now to continue driving to Hendersonville for routine visits.

Fact: REACH used to do whatever for the animals first and would then give pet owners the bill to work out/pay after services were rendered. Now, the policy is that pet owners are given a fee up front to approve or not, which then drives whether or not the pet is treated. Obviously, this creates much grief for those who cannot pay for the service. It's tough, I know.

At the very least, REACH should look into becoming an affiliate with an organization that helps folks pay for services, such as Ashley's Angel Fund in Raleigh. I think Ashley's only helps with dogs, but still... it's life-saving and much-needed help for so many.

REACH, I hope you're listening. You need to do a better job with your whole "compassion" campaign.

I've had to use Reach for not only my personal pet, but also for pets at the animal shelter where I work. Though you can expect to spend $300 just to have your pet examined (they typically do x-rays and blood tests on every patient), they are very caring, competent, and compassionate group of people. If money is an issue they tell you about a credit card that you can apply for, you will know almost immediately if you are accepted or not. Reach also offers a small discount for animals that are in a shelter. Not only have they saved my dog's life, they have also been instrumental in helping our shelter pets in after hour emergencies.

Our first experience with REACH was an emergency situation which turned into a life-or-death decision regarding the newest addition to our family. Our kitten was only 4 months old when she suddenly stopped eating and drinking. Although I had tried unsuccessfully to feed her by hand over a 2 day period, it quickly became clear that something was seriously wrong with Sasha. Our first thoughts were that perhaps she had swallowed something she shouldn't have. It was Labor Day weekend and we didn't hold out much hope that she would get the great care we were used to from our regular vet (Dr. Ramsey of Asheville Veterinary Associates), but we hoped to get her stabilized enough to make it through the holiday weekend and then get her to him.
However, after our initial shock of learning she had a birth defect in which her small intestine had telescoped into her large intestine and she was actually dying on us, Dr. Hopper came out and spent considerable time with us explaining our options.
Our finances were such that we could not possibly immediately come up with the almost $2000 it would take to save her young life. However, we grasped at the ability to apply for an immediate approval for a credit card that would be accepted for this charge as well as any future visits (CareCredit) - and it could be used at our human dentist office as well! Imagine that!
Well, the good news is that Dr. Hopper was able to save our kitten's life, and we were able to pay the bill without wiping out our checking account.
The staff there was supportive, gentle, friendly and efficient.
Oh - and Sasha? She has turned out to be the most amazingly fun and sweet cat we could have hoped for!
Thank You REACH!
