Glasses stayed over half full, service is great and food is even better!!

Seafood buffet, all you can eat crab, cost more but worth it. Seafood buffet with out crab, less. And, regular buffet is even less. Great place to eat!! Well worth the trip out!

Stumbled on this restaurant today.. Mothers Day.. and at 2PM the line was out the door... especially since I guess everyone was from out of town & didn't have a reservation. But everyone was cordial; they have a Patio out back & they opened that up ! It was buffet service on Sunday & the buffet had Fish, Shrimp, fried zucchini, fried okra.. ham, BBQ, Ribs..The best macaroni, Bread pudding & home made lemon meringue pie..we will be back... off route 11 passing through Murfesboro near Chowan College.. Note to your previous review..Dinner for two will now set you back $30. dollars with the gratuity..

The wife and I stumbled onto Whitley's Barbeque on a trip to Norfolk, VA last weekend. I saw the sign on the way up and made a mental note to stop on the way home to see what they had. We both love trying new restaurants, especially if they are local, mom & pop restaurants.

Well we found the place around 3 pm Saturday afternoon. Not a whole lot of cars in the parking lot and I started to wonder if this was such a good idea. But we were there, so we decided to give it a try. We walked inside and a nice fellow looked out from the kitchen and said "Buffet today. Just sit anywhere in the back." So while the wife visited the powder room I check out the buffet.

Now friends I've seen my share of buffets, and while this one wasn't nearly as big as your typical Golden Corral, I could tell from the look and smells that the food was top notch. They had lima beans, corn, fried chicken (REAL Southern fried chicken!! Hot! Moist! And NOT greasy!!!), baked chicken, down East NC Barbeque (vinegar and red pepper; nothing else in the sauce) sweet potato casserole, squash casserole, cooked cabbage, and something that was a cross between a peach cobbler and bread puddin' along with a few other things that I don't remember.

Note: when we finished eating we were the only customers in the restaurant. But they were steadily bringing fresh food out and putting it on the steam table just as if the place was full...

A nice young man came out and took our drink order (sweet tea for me, unsweet for her) and we both filled up plates and dug in. Man! You talk about some good eating! Like Andy Griffin used to say on the Ritz ad "Good cracker!!". And the tea was wonderful too. There is a myth about Southern iced tea that says that it has to be so sweet that you can stand a tea spoon up in the glass. WRONG! My Mama never made tea that sweet and I don't like feeling like I'm drinking syrup when I'm drinking tea. This tea was just right! And the bill for both buffets and teas was $20.00! You can't beat that with a stick!

If you're traveling along US 258 in Eastern North Carolina and you find yourself coming into Murfreesboro at eating time, you owe it to yourself to stop at Whitley's and give it a try. My wife liked it so much that she asked if we could go to Tennessee next weekend by way of Whitley's!

BTW: the street address on Whitley's business card is 1936 Highway 11 North. Not what is listed as the address on Insiderpages.
