thoroughly researched this salon prior to deciding to check it out for myself, which included looking up reviews as well as soliciting detailed feedback from friends who go to this salon. There were mixed reviews on different sites, but I decided to give it a try anyway with the knowledge that everyone isn't going to like everything about a single place. My first (and only) visit was a few months ago. Upon arriving, I loved the modern lobby and was greeted warmly by the receptionist. However, that's where my pleasant experience ended. I was there to see Natasha; I was called back by her assistant who led me to the washing space. She asked me if I had washed my hair already that day, I said yes. Maybe this is why she gave me a *quick* wash and condition and I was done. I was shocked at how quickly it took her to wash my extremely long hair. She then blew out my hair. I have naturally very curly (spiral curls) hair, but I was fine with the blowout because I knew it would let her see what she was cutting. However, the assistant used a technique of curling my hair at the ends with the round brush, which confused me. Why would you want my hair *curled* if you're about to cut it?! Natasha finally came over to cut my hair. I tried to show her pictures to explain what I wanted done to my hair as far as the layers go, but she only half looked at them, stating she knew what I meant when I said layers. Dummy me should have left then, but I thought she knew what she was doing. Also, another sign was that it didn't look like she took care of her own hair; she has very short (maybe chin-length) hair that is dark with blonde highlights. It looked broken off and not very well cared for, which if a hair stylist doesn't know how to care for her own hair, how can she possibly want what's best for *my* hair? She didn't even part my hair correctly before she went to town cutting my hair. When she was finished, it looked ok, nothing extraordinary. I put my hair in a ponytail and went on my way. When I got home, I examined it more closely and found that I had a huge chunk of hair that was uneven, not layered in any way, just a huge amount that is halfway up my head and then the next "layer" is the remainder of my hair down my back. I loved their products (Keratase) and my hair felt soft and smooth when I left, but I don't think I should pay $55 for messed up hair and having to tell the stylist what to do. If you have straight hair that just needs a wash and blow dry, you're probably fine. Otherwise, I'd look for another salon in the Chapel Hill area if you have curly hair and/or want a cut, color, etc.

Caju definitely does not live up its billing as a high end salon in Chapel Hill. I had my hair cut by April twice, and while I thought the cut was satisfactory, her station was messy (the hair from the previous client had not been swept up). On my second visit, the unkempt station was still an issue, and she absolutely reeked of cigarettes. I enjoy going to a salon for the relaxing experience, and this unfortunately was not it.
I also had a manicure there once, and the cleanliness was definitely an issue- there were cut hairs all over the table.

first let me start by saying that i really love the way April did my hair, she totally got it and did exactly what i wanted but....the owner well she is the reason that i refuse to go back to this salon. I bought two hair products after an appointment and didnt like either of them and went in a couple of days later to return products. The receptionist had to place a call to the owner to ok the transaction and i was told she refused to let me return the products because they had been used. The products totaled over 60 bucks! I believe that if you are going to sell a product ,you better stand behind it better than that! She just made a very stupid business move that day because not only would i have continued to see April but i was going to purchase one of her 250 dollar purses she sells in the salon and bring my daughters to the salon.I have tried to contact the owner a couple of times but my calls were not returned i wanted to tell her all this myself but since she didnt contact me i have managed to tell anyone else who would listen. I would recommend April but i would not recommend this salon to anyone . You know what they say if you have ten happy customers they might tell one person but if you have one unhappy customer they will tell 100 or more! In my opinion the owner made a stupid business decision and absolutely no concern for making the customer happy. She didnt have the decency about her to call me and resolve the situation the way a real owner would she is only concerned about the dollar!

I've been going to Caju for a couple of years now. I would let almost any stylist there cut my hair. Totally professional. I'm surprised about the last reviewer's experience -- Caju actually gave me a heads up and months of hand-holding before my stylist, Allison, moved last year. When I first enquired about stylists, the receptionist let me talk to the owner to help me figure out who I might like best. For the record, I've also had color with Colleen and Ali and Jordan and either watched or had blowouts with almost everyone. Beautiful, upscale, they *get* style and they are reasonably priced. I love this shop.

while it is good to know that the salon is a pleasant experience and people have gotten a stellar (or terrible) haircut/color, the information is not very helpful without knowing what stylist reviewers have gone to--it's the stylist that creates the great cut, not the salon...please include details if possible!

i had an amazing stylist at caju who, unfortunately, moved out of state. the salon did not allow her to refer her clients to someone else before she left, which was very disappointing. i haven't been back since then because i have no idea who would be the best person to deal with my hair, which is very difficult to cut. it would be nice if the salon had profiles of the stylists--experience, specialties...other salons do this and it is helpful/reassuring to see the person.

(the review below by the woman who had a terrible cut--the one with with fine hair, but a lot of it--grabbed my attention because that is precisely the problem that i have. if only she had indicated who that was, i might have scheduled an appointment with another stylist and been able to identify who not to go to. now, knowing there is someone there that could make a mess out of my hair, i hesitate to go at all.

Just got back and had a terrific experience. Used the Junior rather than the Senior Stylist so saved 50%. My stylist was personable, intelligent, knowledgeable and best of all, extremely professional and talented. The venue is large, open and clean with no chemical odors, the decor is okay and the products and gifts very nice. I went in and got a consultation, hair coloring, trim, wash and blowdry. The results were stunning and it cost all of $60. Where do these negative reviews come from?

I'm a fan forever. I'd give 7 stars if I could. I'm very very happy with the experiance.

I have had very pleasant experiences with my stylist at Caju. She understands my hair and my preferences extremely well. She takes her time to cut and has very interesting ideas about color. The salon is polished, casual and calm. I'm very happy with my experiences there and with how my hair has turned out.

I received the worst haircut I've ever had. I have long, fine hair - but a LOT of hair. WIth this type of hair, a lot of care needs to be taken if ever using the thinning shears. I did not know this at the time, and trusted that stylist knew what he was doing. The stylist texturized my hair in a straight line all over instead of at an angle. He did not take any care with the placement of the cuts. The bottom of the my hair is all frayed where he texturized through to within 1- 2 inches from the bottom. The bottom is uneven in length and in depth. The inside layer is 1/4 longer then the outside only on one side. The right side of my hair in the front is also significantly longer. When my hair is dry and straight, hundreds of little hairs stick up about 5 inches shorter than the rest of my hair. (My hair falls below my shoulders) I've tried pulling it back, I've tried parting it over the other side... but it looks awful. I've tried to get a hold of the manager but the salon always says she is "unavailable". If you go to this salon, make sure you ask for someone with experience.

I regularly get my hair cut and colored here after being disappointed by all of the other "high end" salons in the area. This is the only salon around that could make my brown hair appear its natural color while covering the premature gray. I have never had so many compliments on my hair. Their prices are at least 20% less from similar salons in town that I got poor service and bad color from. I highly recommend them without reservation. I would not go anywhere else for hair color in town. Highly trained, professional staff. I have used three different stylists here (one went back to school and the other got married). They also are open late so for people like me who work, this is very convenient. You won't be disappointed!

I've been going to Caju for several years now and it is my favorite. I wouldn't consider going anywhere else for my blonde highlights. They're perfect: not cold, not gold, not brassy. Every time I go, the stylists look so good I want to change my hair like theirs. Love my cuts, love my blowouts and I love their Kerastase. The price seems standard to me -- same thing I paid at other local salons for them to ruin my hair.

The one thing I don't like is when I forget to book my appointment. You can wait for weeks to get in to see your stylist.

First, I should say that my colorist was very nice and she tried very hard, so I am loathe to give this place a bad review. On the other hand, my blonde highlights were terrible--sort of nonexistent in some parts (I went in for a touch-up on the roots and I left looking as if I hadn't had my hair colored for a month) and brassy in other parts. I have been getting the same blonde color at salons in CA for 10 years and this has never happened!! The salon itself is very nice and they use great products--maybe they are good at other things, but don't go there for blonde highlights.

I am getting married in Chapel Hill in July. I made an appointment in the fall for me and my five bridesmaids to have our hair done. In March I called to make an appointment with my stylist just to get some highlights and to meet her (she came recommended by the receptionist). I was rudely informed that she no longer worked there and that someone tried to call and inform me of this (no one had called...no message was left). At the end of April my fiance answered the phone and it was the manager from CAJU calling to ask for me. He asked if he could take a message since I was at work and here is what she said "Yeah um, the receptionist who booked your appointments didn't know that we weren't opened on that day. Sorry, thank you, good bye."
Are you serious? I have enough to worry about and I felt like I gave more than enough time in advance. They let me know 2 months before my wedding that they were closed, gave no other recommendations, were rude, and acted as if it were not a big deal. Find somewhere else to go so you will not be left with trying to find a new hair salon at the last minute!

Caju is located in a great location, right off of Highway 54 in the Meadowmount shopping center. I have really never had a problem with any of their services except for once when I had an appointment and had to wait an extra 15 beacuse the hair stylist was running a little late that day and had to finish up with another client before she could get to me. I didn't mind waiting and she did end up giving me a 10% disocunt that day for having to wait. They are really professional here and know how to cut hair. They always do a great job. I have just recently started going here and I think that I will countinue to do so since I'm very happy with the service. They are a bit expensive but you get what you pay for.

PROS: professional
CONS: a bit expensive

Caju Salon, located in the Meadowmont Village, is a very hip and sophisticated salon. Personally, I feel that it is one of the most high-end salons in Chapel Hill. They offer all of the standard hair care options, cut, color, as well as facials, nails, tanning and waxing. You can spend a day here and feel like a million bucks! But beware- you may spend a pretty penny here for the luxury and hip feel of the salon.
