This is ZERO stars. I have never written a response to any media before. This time my experience was so appalling, I feel the need to warn others so as to not be humiliated the way we were tonight.\r

On 10/19/2013 My wife and I visited this location for a nice evening out, as we have on occasions before. We were seated and waited for our drink order to be taken, another table was sat next to us after we had been waiting and they must have been friends of our server as our server ignored us in order to stand and talk to her friends, Finally after atleast 10 minutes or order was taken. I ordered a beer, my wife a soft drink, and we ordered an appetizer and 2 entrees. The server took forever to get our drinks out to the table, then even longer before the appetizer came out. When the appetizer arrived it was obvious that it had been sitting under a heat lamp for some time, the appetizer was bacon cheese fries and the cheese had become tough and chewy, and the fries were cold and tough, the appetizer also came with green onions on it which are not listed in the menu. We also received our entrees about 2 minutes after the appetizer, and again it was obvious they had sat under a heat lamp for quite some time. I ordered a French Dip and the top bread was hard as a rock while the meat was cold, and the cheese was very tough and cold, my wife ordered pasta with chicken, the chicken was very tough, dried out, and cold. I also ordered a second beer at this point, and after waiting about 10 minutes it was delivered to me warm because the server was too busy socializing to bring it from the bar. Finally it came time for the check and when it arrived I noticed a discrepancy in the total as there were multiple banners hung throughout the restaurant reading "Miller Lite Pints, 1.99" However I was charged 3.00 each. When I asked the server about this she said she would find out, and came back and very rudely told me that the special was only for Monday nights even though the sign has no indication that the special is for a specific day. During the entire visit to the restaurant there was absolutely no management presence at all that could be seen. I dont plan on returning to this establishment again, and I recommend that if you are looking for an enjoyable evening, that you stay away as well

AVOID! I'll never step foot in that place again. Went there last night to catch the game and have a late night bite to eat ... We wanted a table that we all could see the game from, and headed around to the dining area, only to have the waitress tell us that section of the restaurant was closed, and that we could sit at the booth in the bar and watch the TVs over the bar. Suggested both men sit on one side and me on the other so they could see it. I couldn't, but ok, we overlooked that - we just wanted to have a good time, relax, and chill.

A few minutes after we ordered our food, we noticed two men at the bar who were wasted and hollering, staggering, leaning on each other, etc. Seconds later, a drink came our way, exploding all over the floor; hit my shoes, but thankfully nothing else. To this, the bartender, waitress, and owner explode into laughter. Apparently one of them tossed his shot glass over his shoulder. No problem - the bartender sets them up again! Then the begin a chanting a curse word I'll spare you.

We call the waitress over and say 'Shug, do we need to keep an eye on this?' She says, 'Oh no - they've been here drinking all day. They've spent like $800, so..' I said 'They really don't need to be served anything else.' She said 'well, they're NOT driving!' I said well at least that was good. She said she could move us to another table, or she could tell them that we had a problem with them and see if they'd move [right]. We decided, no, we were fine as long as they didn't fall into us or anything.

The shouting, laughing, etc continued, and we decided we'd wait on our food and went back to our conversation. Food finally came, and I have to admit, it was good. Shortly after, we're interrupted again, as we see the bartender has given drunk guy #1 a wooden paddle and he is winding up to hit drunk guy #2, who is leaning/barely standing at the bar with no idea this is going on. #2 makes a big show of the windup - again with the OWNER, bartender, and waitress howling with laughter. I wanted to move, sensing something was about to happen, but if I had stood up, I'd have been in the line of fire of the paddle.

So watch, and sure enough, #2 hits #1 HARD with both hands on the paddle. I get up and move away. Still everyone is laughing and I feel like I'm in the twilight zone. I bartended for 10 years, and would have NEVER continued to serve people so obviously drunk - for their and everyone else's safety! Anyway, waitress is still braying, and I say 'I can't believe you think this is funny!' She says, WHAT? They're fine. About that time #1 punches #2 in the face and they both go down. Doesn't take much to break them up, because they are so drunk, but everyone just thinks it's hilarious.

Ok folks, if you are still reading, know that I am not bothered by a bar room fight. I've seen a lot of them, and I'm not complaining that a fight happened. I'm complaining because the people that work there had no problem whatsoever continuing to serve these guys - apparently because of their money - and found it hilarious that they were slinging shots and fists. It was almost like we were an inconvenience... and there's more. The worst part..

So we pay up and start to leave, leaving our beers half full ...on the way out of the door, we can't help but tell the waitress that we can't believe the manager would allow this to happen, and she tells us IT'S A BAR! To that, the owner comes over and tells us that we should expect that in a bar, and if we don't like it, GET OUT. We say we are locals and my friend says 'Hey Man, my wife and I were in here the other night and had a fabulous dinner... we're locals and we're just surprised that you would let it get that far... to which the owner [Eric, I guess... bald guy] says IT'S NOT 8 OCLOCK, IT'S 11, AND IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, GET THE F*&K OUT.

We leave, and realize that in all the commotion we had left a Samsung Galaxy phone and my husband's prescription glasses on the table. UGH. I go back, walk in, to which the waitress says.. Oh, back again, AM I SAFE? And brays like a mule. I ask them if they'd seen the phone, and of course, no one had. No phone, no glasses. I even asked #1 and #2, who thought I was their cab. No luck.

We get home, track the phone, and guess where it is? Yep. We call the police, and they go down there to get the phone. The police question them, and of course, they deny having the phone. They have us call the phone while they are there, and a phone rings, but with no search warrant, there is really nothing they can do to prove it is my friend's.

Later, we track the phone to a wooded lot off of Mill Street. We're over the phone being stolen... but I will never get over the RUDE service, and the completely outrageous attitude of the owner. He apparently doesn't care whether he has customers or not.

We don't need a place like this in Clayton.

I will never go to McKinley's again. Let me start by saying that I have been going to McKinley's for the past 11 years (as long as I have lived in Clayton). During the 11 years this has been the place that I would bring family, friends and co-workers for food and entertainment . As a Steeler fan I have also spent countless Sunday afternoons enjoying football and having many conversations with Eric (the owner as I unserstand). Based on all of this, I would consider myself a good customer. However, after my experience today, I will NEVER step foot in this establishment again. After my wife dropped me off at KcKinley's to watch football today, she was going to Lowes Foods and was undecided as to whether or not she was going to join me at McKinleys after shopping. I went to the bar in McKinley's and the game I was wanting to watch was not on one of the bar TV's. I went to a table to be able to see the game. Shortly after I sat down an unknown person with a Steeler shirt came over to me. He asked me if he could sit with me because he did not want to take up a whole table by himself. I let him know that my wife might be joining me but I would know in about 5 minutes. I let him know if she was not going to be joining me I would be happy for him to join me. This was the last that I heard from him and I did notice that he ended up sitting at the bar.The rest of the game was good. I ate some wings and drank some beer. Toward the middle of the 4th quarter (after the game was decided), I decided to go to the bar and stay for another hour. After I closed out my bill at the table I went to the bar and order a beer from the 4 O'clock bartender (the Giants fan). No more then 2 minutes later the blonde ( I think this is Eric;s girfriend) just started attacking me for taking up a table all afternoon. At first I though it was just a casual conversation because I have had many with her, but the more she talked the more I understood she was attacking me. She was cussing me out!!! Then I thought it must be a joke...but nop, she was definitely serious!!! I tried to explain about my wife being undecided if she was coming or not and saying that I was happy to let that person sit with me. I have no idea what her problem with me is. After I understood what she was saying to me I stood up and told her she just lost an 11 year customer and walked out. I just want to say that in my 43 years I have never felt compelled to write a review about a place because everyone has their bad days and people just have their own opinions about things. But let me say I have NEVER been treated like this before by any business that I have gone to before. If this is how they treat a customer that has spent ALOT of money over the years their. You really need to Stay away!

I have been there a few times and was not suprised by the service as I had already heard of the issues there. I worked in a bar in the next plaza over and I used to get all of their bar customers. They were great customers ready to drink and happy to tip. They said that they were approached for not tipping enough?? and it offended them so they decided to go elsewhere. They also said they were treated aggresively by the bar staff. From what I have been told the owner is dating one of the workers there and her mom also works there? basically he agrees with his staff against the customer a lot. While that is necessary in some situations it should be used very sparingly as it is a form of business suicide. Unfourtunately this guy is more wrapped up in his personal life than his bank account. I had an ok experience there myself the food was VERY slow, the server was also slow and not very good to be her age, I would guess that someone her age has waited a FEW tables and she is less than satisfactory as a server. The place has the potential to make a ton of money if he would put his lady in her place and put her mom to work WAY in the back. I just want the bartender who told them they couldnt come back because of the tips, THANK YOU! You made my pockets very, very fat. Rule #1 NEVER-EVER- fuss at a customer out for not tipping, eat it and move on. And Mr. Owner if you want quality help and much fatter pockets and better reviews...I can be reached.

McKinnley's is one of our favorite hangouts. Went there last night and our service was impeccable and the food was great. I'm not sure what happened to those other folks, but our waitress was right on top of filling drinks and taking our orders.

Don't waste your money down there, they don't appreciate the patronage. Service, food and employee attitude has really gone down hill at McKinleys. We used to like going there, but I wouldn't waste the gas money to drive there now. Luckily Clayton has grown-up and there are other options now. Flipside has good food & service under the new ownership, Skylines has great food, and theres a whole bunch of new places around Garner & Cleveland area. Eric should realize he's not the only place in town anymore.

Pros: none
Cons: everything

The customer service at this place is brutal. We had moved to Clayton and wanted to find a good local bar to hang out. On our first trip the food was good but the wait staff was a joke. Our waitress cared more about talking on her cell and hanging out with friends than doing her job. We decided to give it one more chance since there aren't too many places in Clayton to go. Big mistake. The friendlier my wife and I were to this waitress, the less she cared. If anyone knows a good pub with friendly wait staff please let us know...........

We were seated immediately, our drink orders were taken and brought out promptly. There were four in our party. We had the bacon, bacon cheeseburger, Ruben sandwich and beer cheese soup in a bread bowl. While we waited for our food, we played Texas hold um poker. All the food was awesome! We espescially enjoied the pub chips and beer cheese soup. Our waitress was very professional and cheerful. The only negitive was they did not offer any desert menu.

wow, i always have a blast at mckinleys. the staff is funny and fast even when it's busy, which it usually is. looks like all the negative comments are from people that call the staff names, don't pay their tab, don't tip, or generally don't know how to act in public. no wounder you don't like it there, because they don't like seeing people like you coming. which is fine because the fewer people (from the list prior) that show up, the better time the rest of us have!

I've been a patron of McKinley's since my mother was a waitress there years ago, and I used to love it. The food was always good, the service wasn't horrible, and the atmosphere was cheery and relaxing.

THIS BEING SAID, after they went under new management, the service declined in a drastic and appalling way. After my mother quit, she and a few of her friends had a girl's night out at McKinley's and received horrible service from one of the waitresses. The friend that was paying that night decided not to tip. Because of this my mother was physically assaulted right outside the restaurant by their waitress and then was told that she wasn't to come back.

As a waitress myself, I'm amazed that A) the waitress that assaulted my mother is still working there and B) that McKinley's is still in business. While I still go in every now and again for the pub chips, I do not linger long and I feel it's necessary for my own protection to leave a good tip. More often than not I find myself deciding to NOT go to McKinley's, and I have not been there in quite some time.

Years ago I would have given McKinley's a five-star rating, but I cannot in good faith do that now. DO NOT SUPPORT WAITRESSES THAT MAKE MONEY OFF OF BULLYING CUSTOMERS. DO NOT GO TO MCKINLEY'S.

McKinley's is horrible. They are rude and slow. They have told friends of mine not to come back because they do not tip (when I have watched them leave large tips). There is only one good bartender, but besides that the waitresses are mean. Really, they do not deserve tips anyway. I agree that everybody should stop going...the music is usually good, but if no one goes the music will follow the patrons and go somewhere else.

Hey Womanola!!!
I was present that night and can help you out.
wish I could communicate with you about this without putting my information all out there. I know about everything and have plenty of information for you. McKinley's does suck and the owner and his girlfriend are a mess. I was annoyed about what went on with your phone, and wish I knew how to contact you about this info. maybe send me your email address?
McKinley's has been going downhill fast!

Don't waste your time and money. The owner, his girlfriend and bratty daughter do not appreciate your business.Take your friends to another bar in Clayton that lets you have fun and treats you like a customer.I truly believe Erwin kicks out pretty women from McKinleys so she won't feel threatened!!!!!WAKE UP ERIC.******ATTENTION JOHNSTON COUNTY PATRONS: Stop going to McKinleys so maybe they will close and someone else will re-open with good food, great customer service and that appreciates their customers.

Update: if you notice everytime someone writes a bad review, a good review pops up. It's the owners or one of the terrible waitresses. The truth hurts!!!!! We went there for years, had a great time, AND TIPPED VERY WELL, until his girlfriend's daughters came along. They are rude and I've never seen waitresses act the way they do. Then there's the mother, she's not any nicer either. Just think Eric...how much business/money you have lost. Where we go now WE are the customer and get treated like one.

This is absolutely the worst customer service experience I have ever had; it was so horrible it bordered on scary. I have a similar story to a couple of reviews already left and would actually appreciate hearing more. I genuinely have never had an experience this bad with the the staff of any place, anywhere. I don't recommend it and hope that service like this does not continue to receive money from consumers. I didn't expect the food to be good, and it wasn't, but the service was literally backwards - I was serving them.

stay away. The management and crew are very rude. They actually accused me of walking out on a previous bill on a subsequent visit. 1) why would I go back if I walked out on an $87 check?
2) I went home and brought back a bank statement showing a POS Debit on the very date of their accusation for the amount of MY BILL. Sad thing is, we were sitting behind the people that walked out on that previous visit, witnessed and conversed with the staff about it and then they proceeded to accuse me two months later in front of 16 people that I HAD BROUGHT to the establishment for the very first time!

I have been to McKinley's on many occasions, not for the food and definitely not for the friendly service, but to listen to music and hang out with friends who live in Clayton. On several occasions I have seen people thrown out and thought it was a little odd because they seemed like perfectly decent people and noone seemed to know why they were being (forcefully I might add) asked to leave. My girlfriend and I were there Saturday night and a guy sitting next to us playfully threw her ring on the bar. Unfortunately, it fell to the service side of the bar. My friend asked the bartender (the one pictured on their myspace page) if she could hand her the ring. The bartender looked at my friend, looked at the ring, rolled her eyes and walked away. Obviously, my friend had something to say about the waitress to me and did not say it loud. Apparently, the bartender is schooled in reading lips and immediately, like a spoiled child, walked over to the bouncer (not sure if he's the owner) and told him. My friend and I were shocked and could not believe what was happening. He walked over, pulled my friend's chair back and said, "You've got to go." Of course, we tried to reason with him, but he only became more hostile. The bartender also came back over and was very nasty with us. It is unfortunate for McKinley's because my friends and I have supported that business for years and have a network of people who will no longer be spending their money there.

The only food that has ever been satisfactory from this restaurant are the chicken quesadillas, wings, and pub chips. Aside from that I have found almost all of their food to be sub-par.

Aside from the quality of food, the service is awful. VERY slow and VERY unfriendly. I have been on a number of occasions with plenty of different waiters and waitresses.

Don't bother with it! I think it's a waste of time AND money.

I went to McKinley's on 11/16 and was approached by a waitress I had seen previously in the restaurant and she asked me if I had come in before and I said yes. She was referring to 9/23/07 and said that I had walked out on my bill, I said no, but I remembered the incident. She stormed off with a large attitude and I continued to enjoy my visit. One a trip to the bathroom, the owner and my husband began a heated discussion about the situation. I interjected and suggested that I present a bank statement showing proof that I had paid for my meal that day and the waitress told me that wouldn't prove anything. The owner was rude and proceeded to tell me that the current problem was that the table we were at on 11/16 wasn't tipping. Wow. We left, I went home, produced the bank statement and went back. The owner admitted that the girl was wrong in the way she approached me, but he NEVER admitted that they made a mistake about my identity and the fact that I was not the one that walked out on my bill on 9/23. I didn't want a free meal, I just wanted an, I'm sorry, she remembered your face from that day, but must have gotten you mixed up with the real culprit. This is all I want. This is a small town and a small pub and I can assure you that the owner and waitresses were talking about this the entire time we were there. I will never visit again and will be on a negative campaign against this establishment forever.

McKinleys is a great place to go if you are a smoker and do not mind being in a very smoky environment for the evening. The food is pretty good as is the atmosphere but the sheer amount of smoke was a definite turn off for me.
