STAY AWAY FROM THE SPEARS YMCA!!!

In 2015:
- a 12 year-old boy was shoved by a soccer coach there. Ironically, this coach wanted to lecture him on sportsmanship. His actions were reported to the corporate office and they did not respond.
- a female soccer player was subject to unwanted hugs by a divorced male soccer coach. He said, "I'm gonna have to work on you," when she made it clear she did not like him touching her. The player was kept away from this coach after his inappropriate behavior became apparent. He was also observed being too touchy with some other girls.
- the divorced male coach constantly screams at his players and even screamed "shut-up" at another coach during a match and suffered no penalties either during the game or after it.

As adults, we have a responsibility to ensure the welfare of children. These incidents are likely not isolated, for every time acts like these occur openly they have probably happened out of sight of the public numerous times. Coaches are powerful role models and leaders shaping our children's lives and this type of conduct regardless of the success of the coach or team is unconscionable.

Improper conduct is not confined to the coaches. Two referees admitted that they would cheat to help other teams. One of these admissions is on video on the Facebook page created to shed light on the problems at the Spears YMCA:

There are numerous videos of fights occurring at YMCAs also on the page. Besides safety issues, there are also some other detracting factors which make Spears a poor choice. As other reviewers have stated, the restrooms smell bad. We also found that the payment process was tedious as payments for sports tended to take 30 minutes or more. There was always some problem that required three people and a manager to input information correctly. They also rarely had coffee or tea bags so the customers could not even make the coffee/tea themselves, even though the staff should have made the drinks.

That is not all. If your child is under 14, Spears does not allow them to use the weights in the gym, even if a parent supervises him or her. The staff claimed that this was due to "growth plates being damaged." The Spears position is contradictory to physician group peer-reviewed positions:

So if you take the gym out of the equation for families, you are left with a cold pool that is too small for the amount of members who want to use it, poor customer service, coffee makers with no coffee, and the creepy coaches and the referees who cheat. In Greensboro there are plenty of options for recreation without the headaches at Spears.

My daughter has swim lessons here and loves it!

I was shocked to read a critical review of the executive director. I know her well. She's always helpful, extremely knowledgeable and fair.
She has dedicated her life to making this the best Y around. I have no doubt that it is.
