I've lived in Chapel Hill for over 25 years and La Res is a staple of this community. There is a reason this establishment is one of the few that have not come and gone like so many other restaurants in the downtown area.

While I have not eaten dinner here, I was prompted to write this simply because of the class and professional demeanor demonstrated by the staff at La Res. When I my iPhone went missing here one evening, every single member of the staff -- from the bus crew. bartenders, door attendant, night manager, and even the following day manager-- immediately came to my assistance.

They used their personal cell phones to ring my phone, they searched behind the bar and around all the tables, and tag-teamed with other staff to ensure other sections of the restaurant were searched thoroughly. All this was done while tending to the needs of other customers in an highly efficient manner during an extremely busy time in the evening.

When I called the next day, the day manager was just as attentive and searched the restaurant (again) for me. She passed the message on to her night counterpart who she assured me would continue the search.

This is a highly professional, well-run business and the staff should be commended for their efforts in customer service.

We'd had two really top-notch meals there in the past, but the last two times we've gone, both the service and food quality seem to be diminishing. After our last visit (incredibly bland scallops for me, overcooked lamb for him, and a cheesecake we could barely taste - for $100, this is just not acceptable), we decided, you know, we love the atmosphere, maybe we'll just go for drinks one night. This turned out to be a bit of a mistake - the evening cocktails crowd is very different from the dinner crowd, and the bar area ended up smelling like Players at 2am. We couldn't hear each other over the drunk, rude clientele. I could barely get to the bathroom for all the co-eds stumbling and dancing over one another. We were sitting on the patio - which is just a truly, truly beautiful place, the atmosphere is stunning - but eventually it became uncomfortable there, too, so we left. Don't know now if we'll ever go back.

Pros: The most beautiful atmosphere

Cons: Sub-par food for the $$$, "fratty" night crowd

We just went there last night. The overall asmostphere is pretty good. Apperently there was only 2 people working as hostess/server/bartender altogether. We sat outside. The bread came out in decent time. I like the bread they served. It's kind of herbs and cheese roasted, pretty light but tasty. The menu we were offered, however, had only 4 entree items (lamb, chicken, NY strip, and some kind of pasta I forgot the name-graffy or something like that) . I was excited to see the grilled lamb, but the was informed they were out of it. Flat tire. So I went with the steak and my girlfriend decided to get 2 appertizers: the mushroom and asparagus flambee and Grilled tenderloin with salad. The food came out in decent time, not too long, not too fast. My steak was decent, avegare. It was not bad but for 30$, you could have had a better steak somewhere else (Ruth Chris has awesome steak) or you can go to TGI Friday and have the same quality steak for half the price. My girlfriend's food was better. The tenderloin was served cold (we were told this when ordered), there was about 5 slices, cooked medium rare to rare, with a Asian-like salad. You have to eat the tenderloin and the salad together to bring out the flavor. It's pretty creative. The mushroom and asperagus were a sautee mixture served over bread. It also had some pretty good flavor with it. Overall, it wasn't bad. But there are places in the triangle you can if you want to spend 60-100$ for dinner and it's much better quality food and ambiance. I recommend Sain Jaques (Wake Forrest Rd, I think) or Second Empire (downtown Raleigh) before this.

We expected something different from La Residence, maybe a more "fancy" restaurant, but the staff was friendly and the food was decent. Caters toward a younger crowd.

I have been to La Rez a number of times. In the past year or so, it has shifted up in terms of desserts (excellent!!!) and a touch down in terms of entrees/appetizers. I recently went and ordered the pork loin and the chocolate tart with almond brittle for dessert. The pork loin was fine, but not great -- I think the chef was going for "interesting challenge to the palate" and achieved "fine." Perhaps my palate needs increased education. But the dessert -- what a terrific concoction! It married just plain tasty (a well made chocolate tart is always good!) with interesting touches like the almond bark that kept it fresh and original. Keep up the good work!

My fiance and I went to La Residence for our 3 year anniversary. For slightly more money (~ $20) we could have gone to the Carolina Inn and had amazing food. Instead, we experienced the worst meal we have ever had together as a couple.

Service: We were seated immediately by the hostess. Water and bread were brought to us quickly. Our server smelled like a pack of cigarettes. He described the appetizer special as: "Tomato soup with fresh red onions and stuff." He described one of the meals as: "Delicious because it has so many interesting items in it." Our waiter did not check on us once our main course was served. After we finished eating, it took him 20 minutes to return with the dessert menu which he threw on the table. In general, the staff was exceedingly slow. However, they were very speedy around the check.

Food: The bread was very dry and the type was not discernible. I had the Soup Du Jour (Tomato Soup with red onion, & cream of some kind), Roasted Pork Chop, and bread pudding with bananas foster. The soup tasted like a store bought soup with a piece of bread thrown in and a dollop of sour cream on top. My pork chop was severely overcooked and very dry. It did have an interesting apple mix on top that was very tasty. The pork chop also came with a side of roasted potatoes. The potatoes were mealy and completely unseasoned. My fiance had a Caesar Salad, Cheddar Grits w/ Shrimp & Chorizo Sausage, and a chocolate tart. Imagine a head of lettuce with the base cut out dumped on a small plate. This is what her salad looked like, the greens had not been chopped or even picked over. Some of the greens had brown edges! The salad was poorly dressed with no dressing on the inner greens. The dressing tasted like nothing and was very grainy. The croutons were clearly from a box. The cheddar grits were very tasty. We both thought this and the tomato sauce with ham that surrounded the grits to be tasty. However, the shrimps and "chorizo" sausage were both over-cooked. Both of us are convinced that the "chorizo" sausage was plain Italian sausage. Both of our desserts were delicious. This was the one redeeming part of the meal.

We both recommend this as a nice dessert place, but nothing else!

I took some of the students from my French class to La Residence to experience French fine dining at it's best, and it was definitely the right decision. The warm hospitality of the staff really went above and beyond my expectations, and I give my most sincere compliments to the chef and pastry chef. I look forward to making plans here again in the future. Everyone had a blast!

Merci beacoup, La Residence!

This was a great place for me to go with my friends. We went on a Tuesday evening, and there happened to be live music for "Tunes on Tuesdays." We sat outside on the beautiful patio, and even though it is the middle of the summer, we were quite comfortable under the fans and the tent they had set up. The music was at a perfect volume so that we could still talk at our table, and there was even a "cafe style" menu that we could order from with lighter food and cheaper prices. The servers were also extremely attentive and the food was delicious. Our dinner party couldn't have had a better experience in a more unique atmosphere.

My wife and I went to La Residence to celebrate our 5th wedding anniversary expecting great service and good food. I followed positive reviews on this site and others and decided to try it out. We immediately were disappointed with the quality of the service--in a 1 hour time we had 3-4 different 'waiters' serving us. This was completely unexpected for a fine dining restaurant. The waiter seemed rushed and distracted, and forgot to respond to our requests. When the food came, we were greatly disappointed with the quality and presentation of the food. My dish, shrimp & grits, was cool and had a cheap/rubbery taste. My wife's scallop dish was OK, but not great. I would not recommend this restaurant, it would seem they make more on the wedding/bar and focus less on the restaurant customers.

My daughter Andrea chose LaRez Restaurant for her wedding ceremony and reception site. To sum it up in 5 words: It was a wonderful experience!

The quaint and intimate atmosphere was perfect for such a joyous event. 150 people were in attendance. The service and food were excellent. The transition from the wedding ceremony into a reception site was seamless. While formal pictures were taken, guests were served appetizers and wine and the skirted tables magically appeared. Food stations were set, the DJ played songs for all generations, wine and beer were served and I cannot forget the beautiful wedding cake.

The food was delicious and the service impeccable. All I can say is that the planning staff at LaRez know how ?to do? weddings! Again, I would highly recommend LaRez as a wedding and/or reception site.

I have been a guest at 2 La Rez affairs in the last few months and I am incredibly impressed with their staff, food, and overall ambiance. My steak came out perfectly, even though 40 of us were being served at the same time, and the waiters made me feel like a special guest in a gracious home. The dessert tray was spectacular. I especially liked the passion fruit mousse.

My husband and I had dinner at Le residence for his birthday on Friday. It was an amazing evening. The ambience of the restaurant is so romantic and cozy, with candlelit tables and soft music playing. The staff were very warm and friendly and made us feel welcome. The food was delicious. You can't go wrong with the filet mignon with maple pecan collared greens. I would recommend this place for a quiet dinner or special occasion.

Cafe La Rez is absolutely the best place to have a private party or wedding reception. We had a party with about 80 guests on the patio and it was absolutely perfect! It's a lovely space that has flexibility to be host to large or small events. Planning the party was a breeze as they are very experienced at hosting parties and seem to have it down to a science. The hardest part was selecting the menu because all of the selections sounded so scrumptious, I had a hard time narrowing it down. The food lived up to my expectations and more. The next day, my guests were still raving about the food....especially the chocolate mousse cups! The wait staff was exceptional and were on top of everything. I was so confident they had everything under control, that I was able to spend time with all of my friends and just enjoy myself. If you're looking for a place for a special occasion or wedding reception, you can't go wrong with La Rez.

A group of four of us went to La Residence on a Monday night in October. It used to be one of our regular stops for nice meals, but for some reason, we just hadn't been for a while. Like a decade, perhaps? When we arrived at 7:30, the restaurant was nearly empty. I was concerned. There was no reason to be. Everything was as I remembered. The menu was interesting, the wine list one of the best selected in the Triangle (and not short...), the service was fantastic (darn well should be with as few of us as there were - but they really were just enough, not too much, and very precise), and the food and presentation were excellent. We sat outside on a very pleasant evening. I had rainbow trout with a corn salsa that complimented and didn't overwhelm the moist and delicate fish. Everyone else enjoyed their entrees as well. And the creme brulee was super. I'd highly recommend it, and we plan to go back much, much sooner than 2017.

Great food. The filet, melts in your mouth. The mussels from the cafe menu...out of this world. I've never had them with saffron before...the flavors dance on your tongue like a flavor ballet with balance and elegance. An extensive wine list and a really unique atmosphere make La Residence one of our new favorites.

We were tipped off to try the cafe menu on the patio here. Boy was it a great idea. Besides being outside under twinkly lights and overhead fans, the food was delicious. Fried Green tomatoes, Watermelon salad and Steak Sandwich were reasonably price and good too. And the shrimp and grits and chicken pie were just right for a cafe size portion. Our waiters were attentive and the mojitos were some of the best ever. Give it a whirl for light dining.

Sorry, I have to go along with reviewer "Overrated". We spent a ton and got mediocre food and service. With Elaines and Lantern nearby, why choose this place? I hope they were having a bad night, but it just wasn't worth the prices.

I read so many positive reviews about this restaurant, but was very disappointed at the quality of food and service. The bread that came with the appetizer was burned and it was very noticeable. I couldn't believe the bread served liked it was. The entrees took an hour to come out and when they did I also couldn't believe four scallops were $27. The other entree had mussels that were extremely small for an upscale restaurant and the shrimp looked and tasted like they were previously frozen and were also very small for such a pricey entree. Furthermore, the place is advertised as a French restaurant but there is nothing French on the menu. I will not be back.

My wife and I have done 200+ events there as deejays, mostly receptions, holiday parties and have found it to be one of the best venues in North Carolina for this--excellent food, unmatched, professional staff, really tops at putting on a reception, a rehearsal event, as well as holiday and other traditional parties. We've seen them all and this place is tops!

Pros: TOP STAFF, CHEF, BAKER, BARTENDERS.

Cons: PARKING. ONLY HOLDS 250 FOR WEDDINGS.

I recently attended my brother's wedding reception at La Rez. Great food, great service, and great atmosphere. I would highly recomend this restaurant! You're really missing out on a very special spot in Chapel Hill if you don't try it. And by the way, for those reviews complaining about parking, there's a parking lot
directly across the st. and it's only a dollar an hour until 8pm. This info was free when I called La Rez about where to park.

My wife and I came down from Maine to celebrate our 10th Wedding Anniversary. So many things about Chapel Hill have changed that we almost didn't recognize the area! I can't explain how fantastic it was to be able to stay at The Carolina Inn and have our anniversary dinner at La Residence- the same places we went to over ten years ago. We were able to relax and enjoy our meal in the front room with the fireplace. My wife ordered what the executive chef himself recommended- seasonal goat cheese salad and the filet mignon, and I selected their she-crab soup and seafood linguine. Her salad came with the most delicious strawberries and balsamic vinaigrette, and the temperature of her steak was perfect. My dishes were made with the most fresh ingredients, and the seasoning was a little Southern, a little French. The service was very professional but not too uptight- Perfect after all these years!

We had heard about this place for years, so the wife and I elected to give it go prior to a theatre gig in Chapel Hill. I was quite disappointed. The ambience was nice, the service competent, and the food was good, although not memorable. The price was absurd when you consider the total package...waaayyyy overpriced. I would not (and have not) recommend this to anyone.

Checked out La Rez before the game last week, with a bit of trepidation. How could I watch a game outside on a patio at a fancy restaurant. Well, it has another look and feel on the outdoor patio and the food was great. Best bartenders, too. Went back again Saturday night and the regular menu and late night bar crowd was great. It's definitely an insider's secret and not the place you expect it to be. Definitely appealing to a younger crowd than YO MAMA!

My husband proposed to me at this restaurant. It was such a wonderful experience and would encourage anyone to give it a try. It is family owned but delighfully gourmet. The wine list is exquisite, the chocolate martini's are amazing, and the food speaks for itself. As someone born in France, I must say any negative reviews that you might read about this restaurant are from people who have never experienced real french cuisine. It is absolutely fabulous.

Pros: Very romantic

Cons: May be loud early in the early evening.

I have eaten at La Rez several times, and it never falls short of wonderful. My boyfriend and I stopped in last week, and the holiday decorations made me feel right at home. Unlike other fine dining establishments in the area, La Rez is warm, from the atmosphere to the staff. The filet, pumpkin soup and cheesecake are better than any in the area. Our waiter was very knowledgable of the food and wine, and picked the perfect bottle for us! Although the restaurant may seem expensive, the portions are so large that you don't leave hungry, a complaint I have had at other restaurants such as Il Palio, Elaine's and The Lantern. Overall a great restaurant, and the first place I reccomend when friends are looking for a good date spot.

We had dinner on La Rez's outdoor patio last night and were impressed with the ambience and service. We had experienced the menu in front of the fireplace with a business group and decided to try the heated patio for a more casual experience. It was GREAT! And, the food was as good as ever. If you want some good food in a place that feels like a New Orlean's restaurant patio, try La Rez. You will be happy you gave the outdoors a try. And its the middle of winter too..

We couldn't wait to dine here after reading some of the reviews. When we arrived, the setting appeared romantic. Afterwards, we were highly disappointed. The service was unimpressive. The food tasted like it was prepared in a microwave. My seafood dish included mashed potatoes (the powdered kind). There's no way a fine restaurant serves powdered mashed potatoes! The wine and dessert were ok but it's really hard to mess that up. Later on, we discovered that Le Residence was more popular for their late night dinner menu, which included "appetizing" items like fried chicken fingers and french fries. I'm sure this menu is great for the post frat party when trying to sober up!! Once upon a time Le Residence must've had a fine chef. It is clear that this is no longer the case.

I have been only once, for a special occasion with the entire restaurant rented out. It was phenomenal. The food--even though we only chose between 2 dishes--was amazing, I was very impressed at the flavor and attention to detal because of the mass-production that must have taken place to deliver so many meals @ the same time.

They were out of four of the menu options. The food is bland and not worth the extra money.

I took my girlfriend to La Residence for our anniversary dinner - certainly one not to be forgotten. Ms. Gualtieri was extremely accomodating - we were given a private table by the window with a beautiful flower arrangement, rose petals, and a fantastic champagne. The service was fantastic - the chef himself came out to wish us a happy anniversary at the end of our meal. I had the beef carpaccio appetizer and the shrimp skewer dinner, both of which were fantastic. My girlfriend had the potato leek soup and the grouper entree - she's typically not one to clean her plate, but she did here. The deserts are exactly as you would expect, light and almost too good to eat. Our deserts were garnished with a piece of candy that said "Happy Anniversary." Thank you to the entire staff at La Residence for a wonderful romantic evening!

Service was competent, but a bit slow. Nice presentation on the food, which was good, maybe above average, but nothing outstanding. Ambience was poor...do not expect a quiet, private conversation. Definitely overpriced for the quality and presentation of food.

I've eaten at La Rez a few times over the years, always hoping it will have gotten better, but each time I end up disappointed. Last meal we spent well over $100 for a simple meal for two and at the end of it the only thing they really did well was the specialty beer we ordered. Everything else was decent but extremely overpriced and ultimately unmemorable. The ambience would have been nice were it not for the constant shouts and shrieks of a gaggle of drunk sorority girls at a party in the next room that made it difficult to hold a conversation. I think I've learned my lesson now... not going back.

Each year, we have hundreds of alumni return to campus for Reunion Weekend. After graduating with their MBA, they are used to entertaining and/or eating in top notch restaurants for work. With that said, La Residence continues to be at the very top of their list of places to eat for their reunion dinners. The ambiance is serene, the food is exquisite and the service is unbelievable. It is also our Dean and his wife's favorite restaurant hands down. They'll find any excuse to eat there. I have always had incredible meals at La Rez and I look forward to going every chance I get. It's the perfect place for a romantic meal, a great place to meet friends for dinner, or an excellent atmosphere to host a business affair. I cannot recommend it enough.

I can't believe this is considered romantic! My boyfriend and I were very disappointed in the atmosphere and the food. I can't tell if this place is a cafeteria, a reception home, or a bar. No definitive answer. Please unconfuse us!

In Dec., La Rez hosted an end-of-semester party for a large group of med students. The experienced manager was very willing to work with us to customize the event to fit our needs but still meet our (student) budget. On the day of the party, a personalized menu and their cheerful staff created a cozy atmosphere even with over 100 people in attendance. The classic house and winterized porch are inviting even on very cold days. This is by far the best place in Chapel Hill to host a party!

Recently returning to Chapel Hill after a 12 year hiatus, I was surprised, and maybe a little concerned, to hear that La Residence had become a hopping bar. Eventually overcoming my reservations, I tried LaRes to see what all the hype was about. The food was better then ever; new chef seems to keep it on the cutting edge. Eating late during dinner service, it was a pleasure to see the young college crowd arrive. As LaRes hasn't lost focus on the food and art of fine dining service I believe the fusion of nightlife and fine dining is a win-win for customers and restaurant alike.

We were driving in downtown Chapel Hill after several years of having left the area. What a treat to discover the new La Residence. I had the lamb shanks and foie gras and my partner had the tuna cube and filet. The price was excellent and the food was a true match for their reputation. It was a live music night so the staff allowed us to move to their heated patio for a blue grass band performance at no extra charge. We enoyed a delicious chocolate mousse dessert and a heavenly mocha orange cheesecake. And their was a cafe menu on the patio for those preferring to eat late. We are planning to return for more live music our next trip in town and try the light food on the patio. Try it! You will be impressed!

We just had my 21st birthday party on the patio at La Rez and were treated like royalty. THe staff were so friendly and helpful and the chocolate cake was to die for. I had the foccacia pizza and they had chicken sandwiches, pork tortas and filet hamburgers. Imagine at La Rez and it was a live music night so we got music too. What a treat. I would highly recommend if money and good food are important to you, that you try the new patio menu, especially for their live music option.

We picked this restaurant since it had been so highly rated, but frankly, I was extremely disappointed. I expected so much more from such a highly rated restaurant. The atmosphere was romantic, but I have been to more romantic places. First we were seated in a room with a really loud party. We asked to be moved and were accommodated. The service overall though was only so-so - we waited 10-15 minutes before someone came by to take our drink orders and the restaurant was not even crowded. Also, I ordered the grouper and must admit that the dish was quite bland and tasteless. But dessert was good, and the best part of the meal was the wine! But overall, I expected more.

Having attended a fabulous wedding reception at La Rez in Julyl, my friend and I decided to try the restaurant for dinner last week. Its the bomb. We thought the food at the wedding was far superior to any we had at previous hotel weddings by the way. We ate on the patio and tried the cafe and regular dinner menu. And the chef ended up coming out explaining different menu items. WOW! Since when do Triangle chefs bother with this service. The lobster roll and lump crabcakes are definitely five star. The beet salad is a definite must. Even the mosquitoes were absent during our visit. And the desserts, I should have started with them. Chapel Hill has got to do better. Also, the friendly staff should rate kudos. I've been back three times in 4 weeks and its my new favorite find in the area.
