I am horrified at the service we received this evening. I do not know where to begin.... The waitress was extremely unpleasant. When asking for drink, dinner and dessert orders, she rushed us through, we felt we were bothering her.

My boyfriend and I went for his birthday recently... we had SUCH a great time. Got there early for a drink in the Turkey Lounge, where the service was quick even though it was busy. When we were seated for dinner, our server was knowledgeable, friendly, and went out of the way for us. He had Chef Royal come say hello, who then sent us out a FANTASTIC dish that he was "working on". NC shrimp, linguini, tomatos, basil, lemon oil and preserved lemon. I HOPE he adds it to the menu because it was to DIE for.

Dinner was chateau briand for two, carved tableside by the chef, which we couldn't even eat because we were already full!

Dinner was followed by a tour of the wine cellar and private dining rooms downstairs. If ever your server offers, don't pass it up!

All in all, the evening was fantastic--not cheap, but we definitely got what we paid for: two bottles of wine, appetizer, salads, entrees, fantastic meal and service for $200. We can't wait to go back!

I have been there many times with my family, but on Mother's Day was the first try to go for buffet. Huge mistake! Our reservation was 11:00 a.m. The waitress never explained what was included in the price (e.g. drinks) nor paid attention to our table.

Food was not great for $45 a person. There were no fruits, salad (garden salad only) section only had a couple of dressings, and meat items were chicken and roast beef ONLY. Dessert...I was totally dissapointed.

If you are planning a wedding at the Pavilions at Angus Barn, be sure to ask them about the $20,000 minimum on food and drink - because they won't be up front about it!

After 2 months of conversations about the details of the wedding venue (including my emphasis on the importance of price) and waiting a month for the contract, it arrived with the line about the minimum tucked between the usual contract language. When I inquired about it, I was told that the coordinator did not tell me because it didn't come up.

Needless to say, I'll be holding my wedding elsewhere - and while the new venue I am considering has a minimum (of $10,000), at least they are transparent about their policies.

The Barn has long been the best restaurant in Raleigh, especially for steaks. And Ruths' Chris can kiss my tail, because the barn is not "a la carte". HEre you get to enjoy a great atmosphere with lots of great options.

I had the Tuna last week - it was tough not ordering a steak. It was marvelous. I asked for it "lightly seared", and it was essentially raw tuna. TOP GRADE

I've eaten here twice, once upstairs in the lounge and once downstairs (where you MUST make a reservation). The atmosphere downstairs literally feels like your eating in a barn (hence the name) but its not a comforting feeling its an open, winding, unromantic feeling. The upstairs lounge has a better atmosphere for sure, I'd recommend it if you do come here. Both times the food was just "OK," and definitely not worth the $100+ tab. My fiance likes his steak med-rare and it did come out that way, but it was on a skillet (a very hot one) which caused the steak to continue to cook and thus made his steak close to well done before he finished eating it! Anyone who loves steak knows this is a problem and I cannot understand how the "beef eaters haven" could think this is a good idea? The wine list is great but thats the best part about this place.

Excellent wine list. Great food, you get everything included, not the typical a la carte in traditional higher end steak houses. NC Nastalgia is what you see and feel when you walk in. I love that you see evening gowns in one corner, and jeans and a t-shirt in another. Fun place.

I'd heard so much about this place that I was looking forward to my first visit for my birthday. Our food was ok, but I've had better steak elsewhere for much less than we spent at this place. When my husband made the reservation he told them it was for my birthday, so there was a baloon tied to my chair when we were seated. When we finished our meal, the waiter asked if we wanted to order a dessert and he made several recommendations that sounded good so we each ordered something. When we paid our bill and were ready to leave he brought out a small birthday cake for me to take home. Would have been nice to know this was coming and we would have passed on the dessert. I guess he just wanted to fatten the bill so his tip would be more. All in all it was a big disappointment for me.

Have been to Angus Barn many times. Ask for what you want. Think of menu as starting point. Have had custom orders all the time. For Special occasions ask for Table in celler. Went there on 20th anniversary. Six to Seven course meal with wine for every course. Able to talk to chef as he prepared our meal. My wife loved the tips. $100 per person. Worth every penny. Great steaks and seafood. Have eaten at all the big name restaurants in North America and some in South America. Still in top 5. On a regular meal night can call, get in and out in 1 hour. Better than any outback waiting line. Have 2 great steaks and sides for $90.00 with leftovers for breakfast. I can't get out of other resturants in town for under $70. $20 to be a human - priceless!!! Service is best. Anybody will stop and get your drinks or fix any issue. Week nights busy with Business clients, try Sunday night. Have great buffets at holidays.

Third visit here in four years and each time I have the highest expectations that just aren't met. This time I tried the 'signature' dish of this period, flounder with veggies cooked in parchment paper. For $33 approx, the fish has no taste other than that of the burned paper. They did exchange it for a small filet and though very tender, had no real taste other than the salt I begrudgingly added. Excellent customer service (not from our waiter) added a complimentary dessert, we wrongly chose the key lime pie which had very little taste and was frozen hard. Seriously, a key lime pie from the grocery store (Edwards, etc.) has more taste than this. I have heard the other desserts are excellent but not this one. Seating: on top of your neighbor, hear every word, just no ambiance at all. Our waiter, please I don't need you to make up the name of the daughter of the winery owner like you're best friends. We just wanted a simple glass of wine. ho-hum, no more for me/us. At these prices, there is just not the value in my opinion. If some (and many do as the crowds came in around 8pm) find this a great place - go for it.

I was not impressed with anything from the Angus Barn except the atmosphere. I felt rushed the entire time I was there. I hate when you can't even finish a salad and the steak was already on its way to the table. My filet was over cooked and was seasoned with nothing better than anything I could get at an Outback (for a cheaper price mind you)

Just as the user before, I've lived here for 10 years and never went to Angus Barn. Always heard of it, was recommended but I don't know, just never went. My wife and I went this past weekend and it was a decent experience. The service was average. The server did not speak much, bascially he got our order and that was the most we saw him all night. The steaks were just good, I thought and I had mashed potatoes but they were beyond salty. It wasn't even tolerable to eat kind of salty. Worse mashd potatoes I've ever had. Maybe I came on an off night. I know everyone has them. Maybe for being in service for so long they have gotten slack as well. I don't know. I always try to give a restaurant 2-3 trips before I make a decision if I'm never going back. Hopefully next time will be better.

We've lived here for ten years but had never yet been to Angus Barn, so when our 20th anniversary approached we made reservations a good four months in advance. We told them when we made the reservation (and again when we confirmed just a week out) that we were celebrating this milestone anniversary, and that we had never been to the restaurant and we asked for a romantic table worthy of the occasion. I told them specifically that I wasn't familiar with their assorted rooms and asked them to pick out a romantic spot for us. We arrived and were seated very promptly, but we were given a spot in the main room where a large family party was going on, complete with little kids just being kids, but being loud and running around, and we were seated in a corner with a small partition and a table right next to us where two businessmen were having a conversation so loud I could scarcely hear my husband. I was closer to this strange guy than I was to the man I was celebrating with! We asked the waiter if there was something in another part of the restaurant, and that we'd be willing to wait, but he apologized and said no, they were full up that evening.
There were balloons on the table, sure, but that hardly made up for the very public, common day atmosphere. Our food was great and the service was excellent and we made the best of it, but c'mon, all I've heard about for years was how wonderful this place was for celebrations, and here I was on my 20th anniversary and I might as well have been in an airport for all the "romance." Later on we walked around the restaurant and I couldn't believe how many other rooms and tables would have been more appropriate for us. To me, if the restaurant can't get that simple request, made far in advance, correct, then they don't get my repeat business or my recommendation.

I went to Angus Barn years ago and thought it was over-priced and that the steaks weren't the rage they claimed to be. But the last two times I went, it was great. Expensive, yes, but worth it. Maybe my taste buds or appreciation for steaks hadn't developed when I was young, I don't know. But MAN, their ribeye tastes so very good!

Man, I LOVE the bar! We went with a bunch of friends and sat in a little cozy area next to a fireplace (there were several) with plush couches and a coffee table between us. Excellent service. Free crackers and cheese and olives and celery. More comfy than our living room!

I love the barn-feel and the barrel of apples on your way out. This place is cool-ito!

My wife says: "Prime rib was bland and tough" My feeling is that they do age their steak, but use a low quality grade beef - select or lower. The crackers and the cheese -compliments of the house - was the best part of the meal - oh yes, the desert was good. It is possible they wet age instead of dry age which would be the reason for the blandness of their steaks. The steaks did not exhibit shrinkage which is an indicator of a good dry age steak along with a nice nutty flavor.
I don't quite understand the hoopla behind this place and maybe because I am rather new here. This place was recommended by a friend and I'll only recommend it for the atmosphere. This place is about atmosphere like the cheesecake factory which is very bland and about the worst cheesecake I've ever eaten.
I've had much better steaks at applebee's and of course the steaks I make at home.
Save your hard earned money, this place will cost you about a 100.00 a head for a fast evening. The angus barn is great if you want to impress your friends with how much money you have or your status. But they will have the last laugh.
If you want to take you friends out for a great time and the food service is not too fast (allows for more time with friends) try CasaLinga on Capital or even "On the border" and enjoy.
Bottom line: I think we are being fooled as a consumer when eating at the Angus Barn. I honestly do not believe you are receiving what they are implying.

I once went to a popular restaurant and made an honest mention at the end of the meal which is going against the popular belief that I did not like the food and did not understand why so many people did. I was worried about the feedback and to my surprise, nobody else like it there either!! Ask your friends and family for an honest opinion because you might just be throwing your money out the window because you think that you are making them happy!

Pros: Cheese and Crackers and good atmosphere

Cons: Poor Grade Beef and probably wet aged. Not fine dining - it is a steak house

.

The food is incredible and yes the prices are high but they are well worth it. The appetizer chips and veggies with cheese dip are amazing as are the steaks and Alaskan king crab claws. Friendly, classy atmosphere and great service. One of my favorites.

Our first few visits to the Angus Barn were great - good food and attentive service.

Our last visit in August visit this week were totally different regarding the food quality. Service was still great.

The prime rib was tasteless and tough - totally opposite from previous visits. The lamb was fatty and had poor taste.

Prices have gone up quite a bit, but food quality is down in the drain. In fact, Outback's $9.95 steak special is much better than the steak at Angus Barn.

Since this restaurant is a Raleigh tradition and owners are involved in many worthy causes, we hope they wake up before this great eating place is no more.

Food is great ambiance is perfect for special ocassions. Service was outstanding. We got a five star service. I went to Angus Barn last year and forgot to write a review, but will go to Ruth Chris this year and compare (I have a $50.00 AMEX coupon).

Angus Barn is a safe bet and best of all is not a franchise chain, so it's one of a kind. You won't be dissapointed,

I went to Angus Barn a few months ago--the service is excellent, food overpriced, and the atmosphere is not as intimate as I would have liked (so loud). I doubt I will go here again mostly because there are so many other restaurants I prefer-

People rave often about the steaks and the incredible wine selection at the Barn but I am sold most of all on the Burger! Yes that's right they make the most incredibly good, huge burger ever made and you can't go wrong with it. Since it's extremely thick order it well done and it's the kind of item that you can split on a date with two potatoes and have a meal out of one. (I have never finished all of one of them.) In addition my favorite dessert there is their amazing chocolate pie. It's other worldly good. Great iced tea is also vital to any Southerner and the Angus Barn's is again the best in town. If you enjoy being an elitist snob there are plenty of places ready to take your money downtown and best wishes to you but if you want genuine good warm service with fantastic food and fascinating decor the Angus Barn is a place you may enjoy calling one of your favorite restaurants too. Snobs need not apply.

If you enjoy a great steak, this is the place to be. I especially enjoy the bar upstairs.

I hate the service though. The waiters are amazing, but the bartenders really need to check their attitude.

I had researched the "top 5" prime rib establishments in the Raleigh area prior to visiting and wanted to visit each during the course of my week-long stay. The second restaurant on my list was the Angus Barn. I had heard good things about this place so my expectations were set on the high side. The expectations were reset when I entered the establishment and found myself in a reastaurant/store ala Cracker Barrel. They had the cutest little quilts and stuffed animals and enameled plates, ALL of which were made in China... So, I'm thinking to myself, I hope this place isn't trying to be an upscale Cracker Barrel slash Ruth's Chris. Much to my chagrin, that is exactly what it is shooting for. I ordered the 22 oz cut of prime rib known as the "Connoisseur" cut. I requested medium rare. I expected:
- 22 oz of meat with a bit of fat but mostly trimmed
- medium rare.

However, I got about 12 oz meat, 4 oz of fat and 2 of the bones. I have never been served bone-in prime rib without being specifically asked if I wanted bone-in prime rib. Also, it was served quite rare. I was very disappointed in the meat.

The service was awesome. The raw horseradish was awesome (probably the best I've ever tasted in a restaurant).

I'm not likely to revisit the place, I had eaten at another steakhouse in Raleigh the preceding Sunday night that was far better than the Angus Barn, at about the same price. Ironically, the waiter at Winston's had confided to me that he worked at Angus Barn as well and that the Angus Barn served better food. In my opinion, he was wrong.

Two down, three to go....

Had not been to the Angus Barn in years, and decided to try it again. VERY DISSAPOINTED. We ordered the Chateau'Briand. While the meat was cooked as we ordered, that was about the only thing good about it. Tasteless and chewy. The plate had obviously been sitting under a heat lamp for a while, because the side order of peas and carrots had begun to dehydrate and shrivel, along with the mushrooms. Other guests at our table had similar comments on their meals, so it wasn't just my meal that was a dissapointment.

Sorry to see this long standing institution going down hill so drastically. There a too many good restaurants in town now. Will will not return.

We hadn't been to the Angus Barn for a regular dinner in ten years because we didn't think it was worth the hype, etc. We had been for events, but not to one-on-one dine. Well, I'm now an apologist for that. We've been twice this year, and we'll be back. It's really not all that expensive, especially considering the food and service. Great food. And the staff obviously wants your experience to be grand.

This restaurant is all right, the food is good, but the prices are outrageous. The seats are hard, and youi really are eating in a barn! Well, I thought there would be more to it, and I was not that impressed. The service was average, and the wait wasn't so bad (of course, if you have reservations).
