We have had them do a couple jobs for us, most recently replacing a 18 year old furnace that quit during a cold spell. They were out the same day to diagnose, followed by a phone call with Bud to discuss options, then the next day they were out to start the install. We could have probably got the replacement slightly cheaper, but the service was so fast and seamless it really was very good. I would recommend Bud Matthews Service to friends/neighbors.

I called on a Saturday because I was stuck on plumbing in a bathtub faucet. Bud showed up in 20 minutes, told me I could handle it, coached me on solder and flux techniques, left me his torch, and told me to call him if I couldn't get it done. Bud didn't do any work for me so I can't comment on the quality of the work but he is a good plumbing coach, and as nice a guy as they come. Also he never charged me a dime.

Recently I used this company for a broken dryer and carpentry work (repair of rotted wood).
The dryer part had to be ordered but Bud came back in 2 days and got it installed and working again.
The carpentry work was done great.
My experience was very good with this company. No hesitation giving 5 stars.

Punctual, friendly, and knowledgeable, Paul was able to fix my gas dryer quickly and diagnose the problem with my oven (coming back later with a part that had to be ordered).

I had called and left a message just before the New Year's weekend, and didn't get a call back for about 3-4 days, I guess due to the holiday. That, plus the total cost seeming a bit pricey, is the only reason I didn't give 5 stars.

Bud Matthews installed a new heat pump and air handler in our home in Nov 2011. He worked with us in finding a model suitable to our needs, solved a long standing issue in air flow in the house by relocating the air return, allowed us to do some of the work, and did a quality job.

We have used his services for years, and this kind of service is typical in our experience. He is honest and hired good, polite technicians. Highly recommended!!

We have used this company for various services for nearly 20 years. This includes heating, air conditioning, water heater, washer, dryer, refrigerator, and some home repair/construction. They are consistently timely and courteous and spend the time to explain the problem and their recommendation. If there is a problem, they are quick to follow-up. Yes, there is a trip charge for initial assessments. In my experience, if they are contracted to do the work, that charge is included in the work total, and you are not charged for repeat trips. Sometimes, I have explained the problem over the phone and received advice about what to try first, or an opinion about whether the problem was worth fixing versus replacing.

I was very happy with the service until I got the bill. My gas dryer stopped heating, and after reading up on google about the likely causes, I didn't fancy messing around with a gas appliance.

The service guy came early, was courteous and professional. He found the blown fuse within a few minutes, and swapped it out.

I was surprised to be billed $76 for 1/2 hour labour + $75 callout charge (plus the part cost of $12).

My wife had made the appointment, so I didn't feel like I had room to argue over the cost, so I just paid it.

However, I don't really feel like going back to them because $165 to swap out a fuse seems a little high.

We had a reference for Bud Matthews from a real estate agent. Bud would not come out and evaluate the problem before sending a home repairman, but assured us that the person would be able to do our job. The repairman (an independent contractor) came and said he did not have much experience with that type of work, but spent hours trying, unsuccessfully. Bud would still not come out to look at the problem or the work and said that he trusted his repair person to tell him whether it had been done properly. Huge hourly bill and job not done properly. Bud spent 40 minutes on the phone trying to convince me that they were the best, wanted my business, but still refused to drive ten minutes to check out the job! His speech was very pressured and inappropriate--very worrisome.

I had these guy`s out to repair my viking stove, the tech knew what the problem was within around 15 mins, he seemed like a nice guy - very polite. He had to order the parts, but came back 3 days later with the parts and fixed it. I liked the fact they give a 1 hour window and show up when they say they will !!!

I've been a client of Bud Matthews' Service for several years and when my heat went out on Christmas Eve, I called them. A technician arrived late in the afternoon and diagnosed the problem but didn't have the part on his truck to repair it because it is expensive and unusual. I had 12 people coming for dinner on Christmas and no heat! The technician gave me names of other companies to call to see if they had the part and worked on the part to see if he could get it going one more time. He did but warned me that it could go out anytime. It lasted about 8 hours before it stopped again around 11:00 Christmas Eve but that was enough for us to maintain a bearable temperature in the living spaces with space heaters and the fireplace over the holidays. First thing, Monday morning, they arrived with the part and by 10:00 a.m., we were toasty warm. It was exceptional service in every way.

Here's the skinny on this outfit. First, my AC wasn't getting it done upstairs, so I picked these folks out of the yellow pages because they were local.

After poking around in the attic, they said I needed a new blower. The system was already 15 years old, but I'd only been in the house two years. $750 for the new blower.

AFTER they replace the motor, they go out and check the charge and found it low, so they filled that and said it would cost another pile of money to come back another day and check for leaks. I asked over and over why they didn't just check for a leak in the first place, since it seemed to me that the old blower was still blowing; it's just that the air was hot (this was summer).

Matthews himself came over and gave me some unintelligible technical song and dance why the motor had to be replaced ANYWAY, despite the charge being low. When Matthews added up the ticket, the writing was illegible. After I paid him and he left, I deciphered it all out and saw that Bud had actually short-changed himself because he had added incorrectly. Several months later, I called to remind them that they hadn't charged my credit card at all! Of course, they were glad I called.

The next summer (2010), the whole system stopped working. We called Matthews again to see what the deal was THIS time. He came out and said we needed another expensive part on the outside unit or we could replace the whole system. He charged us $100+ bucks for a ""service charge"" for this bit of advice.

When I asked him why this wasn't brought up as an option the previous year, when he was replacing the blower motor, he said that he would give me a ""deal"" on a new system, given the amount I had spent on the blower. By his own admission, he had told the previous owner of our house four years earlier that the system needed replacing then.

HIS ESTIMATE FOR THE NEW SYSTEM WAS $2000 DOLLARS ABOVE WHAT WE GOT FROM A COUPLE OF OTHER COMPANIES, AND THIS FOR A SYSTEM THAT EVENTUALLY COST US AROUND 5K.

Needless to say, we had the system replaced by someone else. They did a great job and a reasonable price.

Bud Matthews owns the only business I've ever seen which writes its own five- and four-star reviews. I have to respond to the two reviews he posted under two different names (Bud and Cynthia), which he sent me by snail mail, pages missing. Mercifully, I won't address all of his rants, but I will hit the highlights.

My earlier post was a result of my experience with Bud in the summer of 2010, after which he charged me for a "service" call. But first some history.

I had called Bud the summer of '09 because my upstairs unit was blowing hot air. For that, he sold me a blower motor for around $750. Despite my attempts to get Bud to explain how the blower was the problem (since it was blowing lots of air, just hot) he couldn't do it. I finally decided to TRUST his expertise, but I erred there.

Once it was clear the new blower motor had failed to solve the problem, Bud talked me into recharging the system. I forgot how much this cost, but it worked--the system blew cool air--but I wondered why Bud hadn't added a charge before replacing the blower. Again, he couldn't explain. He obfuscated. I couldn't tell whether he was unscrupulous or just dumb, but I again gave him the benefit of the doubt. Next, it was time to pay.

The numbers Bud scribbled on the invoice were unintelligible, but Bud found the bottom line quickly somehow.

I pulled out my credit card, but Bud wasn't prepared to handle a payment by credit card, though he accepts them. At last, he figured out how to write the number down by hand and left in a huff.

Bud says he failed to charge me enough for the blower motor and that an ethical man such as he would have called to remedy this. In fact, months went by without my credit card statements showing the charge from the Bud company at all. Late in the summer, I called to find out what had happened.

The guy at Bud's company thanked me profusely for making good on the payment. The following month, the charge appeared on my statement.

Bud is also deeply confused about the facts of this case, partly because he seems to keep making new ones up. He makes a big deal about our Heil system, which he says I complained about for being out of warranty. The Heil system is part of the downstairs unit. It has nothing to do with the upstairs system in question. We never discussed the downstairs. Here again, Bud is befuddled.

Bud also said that he had recommended to the previous owner of our house that she replace the HVAC units five years ago, four years before I first called him to come out and fix it. He never mentioned a replacement to me, just charged me $750 for a new blower.

Now, fast-forward to last summer (2010), when my system reverts back to blowing hot air. This is when we last called Bud. He drives a mile or two to my house and says this time an expensive part of the compressor unit is the culprit, or we can replace the whole system. By now I'm already having my own notions of replacing the whole system. I knew I couldn't trust Bud, but for grins, I asked him for an estimate. His estimate was around $7K.

I got two other bids from two established firms in Durham. Bud's estimate came out a whopping $2K above them both! Next, Bud charged me an additional $118 for the "service" call he had just made, during which he had given me the bad advice of slapping more lipstick on the pig of my already-worn-out system. That, or replace the system. He's supposed to be giving advice, not telling me I can do whatever I want. Isn't he?

I went with one of the Durham firms and am glad I did. The new system is perfect, and the crew was tidy, unlike Bud's from the previous summer.

Last, I want to reiterate that if you're looking for an HVAC service, run away from Bud Matthews, Inc. Learn from the other one-star reviewers you find here, along with mine.

Learn from the other one-star reviewers you find here, along with mine.

i have seen the bud matthews trucks all over carrboro area and decided to call for help with an appliance problem. the person that answered the phone was polite and very knowledgable. i was also told of all of the services that the company provides. the repair was done that day, by a jolly bald fellow, and the price was not out of line. i feel comfortable with a company that responds to your needs, and backs up what they say they will provide. i feel good about telling my neighbors to use the company because i have had such great service.

Had a plumber from this company today. His name was Jason. Very polite and efficient. Quickly diagnosed my problem (ceiling showed evidence of leak). Got it fixed.
Also did some leaky faucets and checked my washer hoses. I asked him to explain what he was doing and he did. Checked with me at the end of the service to make sure I was satisfied with his service. Would hire again.

Recently I moved to Chapel Hill. I saw Bud Matthews trucks in my neighborhood a few times so I looked them up at the BBB and they had A+. So far I have used the two times, once for a plumbing issue and once for an hvac problem. Both times they sent service techs who were clean cut and had nice smiles, who worked quickly and competently, and who cleaned up after they left!! (that was a first.) The guy even asked for my vaccum. In all, I met 5 of his techs and I have to say I was impressed at the caliber of people working there.
I??d use them again in a heartbeat.

On April 1st 2005 Bud Matthews Services installed a new 10 seer Heil a/c for Robin Bowden, then the owner of 8719 Drew Lane, Chapel Hill. I had told Ms Bowden that her whole upstairs system needed to be replaced as it was past its life expectancy. She informed me of her intention to sell the house, and that she only wanted a new outdoor unit (a/c) we installed exactly what she requested.

Now move forward 4 years. On June 10th 2009 Ms Nancy Walden (the new owner) of 8719 Drew Lane, Chapel Hill called our company for service on her upstairs a/c unit. She explained ??since we put the new system in its not cooling and should be under warranty? I told her I would check our file and call her back. After my research, I told her the only part we handled was the outdoor unit, that was installed 4 years ago, and that there was a warranty of 1 year left on parts for the original owner, but I said I would be more than happy to work with her ?? she in turn said we came highly recommended. Our tech went out on Thursday June 11th. He found the blower motor not working on the very old air handler upstairs. We then gave her an estimate of $500 to replace both the blower motor and capacitor. She was very upset to discover it was not a new unit, contrary to the information she was given from both her realtor and home inspector. It was at this point we became the bad guys!! My tech explained to her we could replace the old air handler and match it up with the 4 year old a/c but to keep in mind R22 refrigerant systems were becoming obsolete, and that a whole new system was probably the better option. She opted to go with just the motor and to keep the old 4 year a/c and 15 year old air handler. We put the motor in and got her cooling before night fall on the same day. When the motor was put in our technician was also able to check the entire operation, he found the unit was low on R22 refrigerant. He charged it up and said we should leak check the system ASAP.

Enter Mr. Mike Walden ?? of 8719 Drew Lane, Chapel Hill, NC. Mr. Walden calls me at my office extremely upset about the lack of warranty. I informed him I would come out personally and have a look at the unit. The following day, Friday June 12th I found and repaired two small leaks at the Schrader valve on the outdoor unit, a very common occurrence (ask any HVAC company) I detected no other leaks on the unit, and got it running. After much verbal abuse from Mr. Walden he paid me by credit card for my service call, a total of $701.80.

On June 16th 2009 my bookkeeper informed me I had actually undercharged the Walden??s by $48.01. I told him to write it off as I didn??t want to suffer anymore verbal attacks from Mr. Walden.

On May 4th 2010 Ms Nancy Walden of 8719 Drew Lane, Chapel Hill calls my company because the upstairs a/c is not cooling again (this is 1 year later) I send my tech out on the same day, this time there??s a problem with the 5 year old unit we installed ?? it needs a new condenser motor, I instruct my tech to do a complete leak check on the system (at no charge to the customer) He discovers a leak in the evaporator coil in the old Trane unit in the attic, he recommends a new system.

I meet with Ms Walden on Friday May 7th to present her with my bid for the very best 15 Seer American Standard heat pump, and the installation of an attic fan to ease the heat load . I apologized again for the ongoing service issues ?? we had a pleasant enough exchange about my family and Father in law whose family she knew. My estimate for the new equipment was $6,950. The service call was $118.50, which I told her I would absorb and give her $250.00 credit for the previous years work. The bid for this tax credit Heritage Series equipment would normally be $7,150 it was to include duct repair, enlarging air returns and the attic vent. Any reputable company in Chapel Hill would agree this was a good price.

I don??t know what the Walden??s eventually ended up installing, but it highly unlikely either the equipment or bid was comparable to what I was offering. I called and left two messages the following week to ask Mr. and Mrs. Walden of 8719 Drew Lane, Chapel Hill which direction they wanted to go, but had no response. On May 12th I billed them for the $118.50 service call as I assumed they found someone else to do their work. I received no payment. For the next few months I called them periodically for our payment, I get no response. On September 21st my book keeping department turned their account over to our collection agency. Shortly afterward I finally get a call from Ms Walden, and I told her the account was now out of my hands as I had not heard from her for 4 months!! Only then did she mail me a check for the $118.50, half of which we had to pay to the collections agency.

The next thing I know I??m reading Mr. Walden??s erroneous, fictious, slanderous and frankly abstract version of events on the internet.

Here is my response:

1 ?? It is correct, I undercharged Mr. Walden and he was not honest enough to compensate me for my mistake.

2 ?? Its true, even my 2nd grade teacher said my penmanship was horrible and that I should be a doctor.

3 ?? I should know better having been in business for 30 years ?? to do work for unappreciative people.

4 ?? From Washington to Wall St, Chapel Hill to Drew Lane, people need to quit lying, cheating and using the internet to hurt people with untruths.

5 ?? We have done very little new home HVAC installation over the years and did NONE of the original HVAC work at Drew Lane, although we do have many long time loyal customers on Drew Lane. The town of Carrboro permitting department will certainly have a record of who did the original installation; it may have been Tillman/ARS.

6 ?? All records and documentation, including the collections agency file are avaiailble for public viewing regarding Mr. and Mrs. Walden of 8719 Drew Lane, Chapel Hill, NC 27516.

7 ?? Indivuals who publicly admit they are on medication should probably wait until they have clarity of mind and some sense of responsibility before slandering other people.

Finally, and to quote from Mr. Walden himself ??here??s the real kicker?
Mr. and Mrs. Walden didn??t even have their new installation permitted by the town of Carrboro which is illegal in the state of North Carolina. I??m intrigued to know which reputable company Mr. Walden used; because whoever it was they clearly ignored the North Carolina codes and statutes. Any company that willingly cuts corners by not paying permit fees to the town are NOT reputable, in reality they totally undermine contractors who try to follow the laws governing our industry.

Sincerely,

I have relied on Bud Matthews for nearly two decades and I have always received outstanding work. His company is reliable, honest and respectful. His work crews are courteous and well - trained. This is quite important to me because my house is in one the two historic districts in Chapel Hill and to my way of thinking it takes a person who has sensitivities to appreciate and to understand how important it is to do repair and renovation work with an eye towards doing the work while keeping the integrity of the historic district in mind.\r
I have always received detailed written and verbal estimates of the work which needed to be done and I have been given options to consider when alternatives were available. In some cases, Bud Matthews has extended me the courtesy of settling my account with his company over a period of time because of my cash - flow problems rather not doing the work which was needed.I thank him for his willingness to be a fair - minded and understanding person in a time when I have been needful.\r
From roof repair to installation of a HVAC to interior remodeling his company has done it all at my house and I am a loyal customer because his company has earned my trust and confidence.

After I paid him and he left, I deciphered it all out, it looked like he had actually short-changed himself because he had added incorrectly. Then I had to call his office several months later to remind them that they hadn't charged my credit card at all!

That opened up a whole other can of worms when the next summer (2010), the whole system stopped working. We call Matthews again to see what the deal was THIS time. He came out and said we needed another expensive part on the outside unitor we could replace the whole system. Just looked it over and said that and charged us $100+ bucks for a "service charge".

When I asked him why this wasn't brought up as an option the previous year, when he was replacing the blower motor, he said that, "well, these things are a judgement call," but that he would give me a "deal" on a new system, given the amount I had spent on the blower. By his own admission, he had told the previous owner of our house four years earlier that the system needed replacing THEN. HIS ESTIMATE FOR THE NEW SYSTEM WAS $2000 DOLLARS ABOVE THE OTHER ESTIMATES WE GOT FROM TWO OTHER COMPANIES, AND THIS FOR A SYSTEM EVENTUALLY COSTING AROUND 5K.

Needless to say, we had the system replaced by someone else. They did a great job at a fair price.

Another company diagnoised my unit with a bad blower motor, they recommended I replace the blower motor, capcitor, mounting bracket and wheel. I was not confidient in the diagnoisis so I called Bud Matthews who was referred to me by a friend and they came highly recommened. Upon arrival the service tech. wanted to evaluate the system and in fact I only needed to replace the blower motor (whew money saved).\r
The tech. arrived upon our agreed time and had my system cooling within 30 min. Thank goodness this company carries necessary parts to complete the repair. (cause it is hot).\r
I wanted to drop a line to say Thank you Bud Matthews for employing knowledgable and professional service techs.

I called this company out of the Yellow Pages , Big Mistake. The don't have a professional person answering the telephone, it sounds like they are at home working. If you have to leave a message, no will call you back for days. Then, their workmanship is terrible. They were suppose to fix my HVAC which was under warranty, 3 hours after they left I had to call them back out, and they wanted to charge me a $200 Trip charge. I said, NO, this is covered under warranty. STAY AWAY from this company

First off I would like to comment about Bud Matthews himself. Who writes a review about their own company? And gives himself 5 stars? All other ratings are 1 star. He urging clients to pick up the phone and talk to him. Tried that....and wouldn't recommend it to anyone...
Here is a brief outline about my service experience with him.
Recently purchased new home, shortly after moving in heat stopped working. Have transferable warranty card showing Bud Matthews as contact. Called number and explained that I am requesting him to come out on a warranty claim.
Technician showed up and spend approximately 20 minutes in crawl space. Said he had to replace wiring harness. Left saying Bud would call about billing. Less than 24 hours later heat stopped again. Bud called and explained that I owed him $175. This charge involved extremely high trip charges for a route less than 10 minutes away. Additionally I was charged 45 min labor and the cost of a wiring harness.I never agreed to any charges and said that this was on call was on warranty work. He got very rude and unprofessional - I explained that I am not going to pay for services not provided since the heat was not working. Got other Heating Company to come look at problem and they stated that no new wiring harness was installed and that they do not see any work performed. I have this in writing.
Called Bud and told him that I would not pay since he did not provide any service and would like to warn other potential clients of this fraud. Now I am dealing with a collection agency.

BE AWARE AVOID BUD MATTHEWS SERVICE !!!

I had problems with my heater and called them. They sent out a guy who was new to heating and didnt really know what the problem was. He recommended something like $600 in repairs to the duct system. I called them back and said I dont think that is the problem and if they could guarantee those repairs would fix the problem. They said they would come back out again, this time Bud Matthews came too. It took them awhile, but they came up with another problem to be fixed, it would be another $300. Bud Matthews told me there was no charge since this was a training session for the guy. Later on, he began to have an attitude with me and my wife because I had the audacity to ask if they could guarantee that the $1000 in repairs would fix the problem. Bud Matthews said they would call back later with the final, itemized estimate.\r
\r
They definitely didnt appear to know what they were doing so I called another company. This other company diagnosed it in 30 mins. and it would be $300 to fix. I couldnt get the same confidence from Bud Matthews, they just wanted money. Eventually Bud Matthews called back after a long time, and said they had our part. What part?! I didnt authorize them to order anything for me. They said I did...me and my wife say I didn't. Well, OK, then. They call back again later and say they were still charging $200 for 45 mins. of time. Yes, this is how much they charge, $200 for 45 mins. of training time. But only after you decide you don't want to pay for their unneeded repairs.\r
\r
I asked to complain to Bud Matthews about this. He asked why I didn't want it fixed by them. I told him the main reason was their inability to diagnose the problem, wanting to charge in excess of $1000 for issues that werent problems, and of his attitude with me when he came. Well, I'll give you some of the highlights from our conversation, ""I'm talking now"", ""You're starting to irritate me"", ""You aren't a customer"" (so I dont need to be nice to you), ""I want your credit card number now!"" and so forth. Yea, real class act, this Bud Matthews guy. I told him I would report him to the Better Business Bureau for trying to charge exorbitant prices to come out here for a training session and for his complete lack of respect for the customer. Anyway, this is what you get with Bud Matthews. They don't know what the problem is in the first place, they will charge you for things that don't need to be fixed, they can't guarantee you your problem will go away and you will be repeatedly insulted by the owner of the company.

Pros: Willing to make money

Cons: Lack of Knowledge, Owner is Verbally Abusive

Let me start by saying I wish there was a ""0"" stars option. This guy is an opportunist if there ever was one. If they don't do the job properly, good luck in getting them to redo it correctly (without charging you extra). And if they won't/ can't do that, then good luck getting a refund from them. The gentleman Bud put in charge of our project made the following comment to me after they screwed up a very expensive installation (and this is verbatim)... ""just because we didn't install it according to the (factory) instructions, doesn't mean we installed it wrong."" I am not kidding!

Their workers were rarely here on time to begin work and sometimes a few days would pass before we would hear from them. One of their ""professional"" employees got into a four letter word shouting match with another BM employee back at the office over the phone while at our home. They took a lot longer to do even the simple stuff than they needed to, part of their work wouldn't pass inspection, etc., etc., etc.

And don't let their BBB score fool you. In my personal opinion, I believe Bud Matthews Service Inc. screws over a lot of people who in the end choose not to bother reporting him. I honestly don't see how this guy has been in business as long as he has.

If you're looking for someone to do some work at your home (regardless of how simple or involved the project is)... do yourself a HUGE favor and keep looking. Don't get taken by this guy like we did.

Pros: absolutely nothing

Cons: list is too long

Recently we bought a new hvac system from this company. Mr Matthews provided us with the options and the pros and cons, answered questions and no pressure or hard sell.
The men who installed the unit were polite and efficient.
We feel we got a high quality unit professionally installed.

In the past we used them for a simple plumbing repair and we were quite satisfied with their service.

I had one of their appliance repair guys out, and found him to be very polite, quick and professional. He diagnosed the problem with my fridge, had the part on his truck, installed it, and was on his way.\r
\r
I don`t think they`re the cheapest or the most expensive, somewhere in between probably.\r
