Yesterday I had a yearning for Thai food and happened upon the Penang Sushi restaurant. It was the best Asian food that I had eaten in years----and comparable to meals that I've had in San Francisco, which is high praise for me indeed.

My boyfriend and I love penang curry, and have had it all over Raleigh (where we live). A spur of the moment trip to Chapel Hill, and luck of the draw restaurant proved to be a winner. This was the BEST penang curry I've had. We fought over the leftovers!

Server was congenial, and accomodating of packing our leftovers to be motorcycle-friendly.

Will definitely make the trip to Chapel Hill again for this meal!

This is a really good Thai and Malaysian restaurant. The food was really good, fresh and authentically spicy, though they do warn you about the spice level. The restaurant was nicely decorated too and very open. It's would make a great wedding reception location if they'd be willing rent out the whole restaurant.

I went to Penang this weekend with a 3 friends and we all really had a great evening. After reading over the menu, we ended up making it a long dinner with both appetizers and desserts!
I highly recommend the Chicken Satay with Peanut dipping sauce appetizer . I don't know what all is in that sauce but my friends and I are still taking about how delicious it is! Secondly, I highly recommend the Ginger Chicken. The dish was really tasty with a light sauce that was a perfect blend of ginger, spices and scallions. Used my side of brown Rice to soak up the sauce--perfect.

At first we found it difficult to find parking, but we were told about the 2 parking lots on Roberson St: one directly behind the building (Courtyard parking lot to the Left) and the other to the right in the Bentley Building's parking lot (after office hours (aka 6 p.m.)). This made it much easier/faster to get a spot than trying to find a rare open spot on Franklin St.

Our server was really nice and helpful, answering all of our questions about the menu and giving us great recommendations (aka recommending Ginger Chicken!).

Next time I go I'm going to have to try a drink from their bar. The menu has about 5-6 fancy, fruity drinks and a long wine list. They also have a full bar so you can order any classic bar drink too.

I recently attended a birthday dinner at Penang and was pleasantly surprised. After reading the reviews on citysearch, I wasn't anticipating an exquisite meal let alone a welcoming experience. An intimidating group of 10 gathered for a 50th birthday celebration and was gladly received by our waiter who wasn't a bit turned off by our numbers. He was appreciatively welcoming and warm. We immediately ordered an appetizer of lettuce leaves paired with a Thai chicken dish that was hot and spicy. We didn't have to wait long for it. The waiter graciously gave us time in between each segment of our dining experience keeping tabs on us frequently. The 10 of us ordered a broad range of dishes from the menu such as spring rolls, Pad Thai, Thai salad, ginger chicken and so on. The food wasn't overly salty and came out warm and timely. While all of us were pleased with our dishes we didn't hesitate to share our choices with each other. The waiter patiently cleared our dishes and left us alone while the birthday man opened his gifts. Keeping the birthday celebration in check, the waiter and staff brought out a free dessert and sang happy birthday! What a surprise, as it wasn't even requested of them. All around, this was a dining extravaganza that was heightened by the Asian delight that Penang represents. I highly recommend this restaurant to everyone!

I am a local Pastry Chef and have been in the food industry for many years and I can honestly say the dinner we had at Penang was some of the worst food I?ve ever eaten in my life. Our order was taken on the back of a reciept the waiter had in his pocket. Our drinks were in old beat up plastic mugs just like the kind you would find at a BBQ restaurant with the indoor picnic tables. We ordered spring rolls and Kha Gai soup for apps. The rolls were very ordinary, tiny, but good none-the-less. My soup arrived in a hot bowl, but the soup was a little more than warm, although, delicious, we thought we were off to a good start, then our entree came, Red Curry and Lemongrass Chicken. The curry was dark brown, not red. I couldn?t eat it, it was disgusting, I can?t even describe the flavor. They used chicken thighs (why? cheap?) and I don?t think they were cooked through. This no more resembled Red Curry than the used oil from my trucks oil change. My lemongrass chicken tasted like dirt, really! not even the slightest hint at lemongrass flavor. I think it was in there because the dish was full of some sort of inch long fibers. The chicken bits were tossed in some sort of thick yellow/red fiber paste, no salt, no flavor, just plain gross. OH, THEY CHARGED US FOR WHITE RICE! $.80 each! MY GOD, ITS AN ASIAN RESTAURANT! HE ASKED US IF WE WOULD LIKE RICE WITH OUR MEAL, WE SAID YES.... NO MENTION OF ADDED PRICE! Our LUNCH order came to $50.00 and we didn?t order any alcohol. We didn?t eat hardly anything and they didn't care, nor questioned why we refused to take it home with us. The total lack of care, interest, or concern and the absolute horrible food left me feeling like we had just been had by a con artist. I would have had a better Asian meal if I had put peanut butter on chicken McNuggets. Read the reviews, I wish I had. Do you notice all the ones with 5 stars that read like an ad? I bet they wrote those to try and counter all the bad ones, take my advise, eat elsewhere

I visited Penang recently after hearing friends rave about the great food and atmosphere. I was a bit apprehensive at first, dining out of my element, but I found the restaurant to be a very relaxing and friendly atmosphere. The food was fantastic and the service was great. We didn?t wait long for our food and we never had an empty glass. A very friendly manager greeted our table and we left with smiles on our faces. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for great food and excellent service. I look forward to dining with them again soon!

We went for lunch today and there were only a few other people there. None the less, it took forever to get our food. We got Miso soup to start and it was more like salt water. Then our main dishes came. One of us ordered coconut shrimp fried rice, it did not have the green beans or cucumbers listed on the menu and there were only 3 little shrimp in it, oh and no coconut! When asked about the lack of coconut the waiter actually said its just a name, there is no coconut. The other dish was ginger chicken which could have been microwaved left overs. It was swimming in salty soy sauce which is probably where the ginger was but I didn't take time to find it. The spring rolls that came with the dish were the size of my thumb and cold. The side salad was iceberg lettuce with some cucumber and carrots that had seen better days. Overall, EXTREMELY disappointing, you're better off getting some fast food Chinese take out if you want a more authentic meal.

We were very exited to find a Penang Restaurant in the area. Happily ordered the famous Penang "Fried Koay Teow" - Oh NO! The look is no where closed, not to mention about the taste!
Two years later, we went back again. This trip, we avoid the entire stir fried menu and tried the curry and nasi lemak. Nothing great but at least we are not as disappointed as the first time.

The atmosphere inside the restaurant is terrible - I think they tried to make it look modern, but instead it's cold. Sitting outside is nice though. I recently went here and ordered the Mango Chicken. When I noticed the sticker was still on the mango, I told the waiter, as it was clear the mango had not been washed. He said "ok" and clearly didn't think it was odd or a problem. My friend and I also ordered an appetizer - the Roti something - that I've had before and loved. This time, it had no flavor or spice - normally it's almost too spicy to handle, and we love it. When we told them, they said "ok" and didn't offer to add spice or remove it from our bill.

Then tonight I ordered take-out from Penang - the Penang Curry Chicken. It didn't have any Kafir leaves like described, and instead was full of large pieces of green pepper, which I hate and is not supposed to be in the dish. If I wanted green peppers, I would have ordered something with that in the description.

Basically, this restaurant can be good - if you sit outside, and there happens to be a cook working that night that knows what they're doing. It's a gamble.

My wife and I went on a Sunday night and received poor service and mediocre food. We ordered 2 rolls of sushi and 2 teriyaki entrees. The sushi took over 30 minutes to get to our table even though the restaurant had 4 other tables with guests. The server only came once during this time to tell us that the sushi chef was very busy. The sushi that arrived was okay. Nothing that great. The teriyaki salmon and teriyaki chicken were good but the broccoli was cold.

If you're looking for good sushi and teriyaki I would go to Akai Hane in Carrboro.

The only good thing about this restaurant is the building's decor and architecture. The waiting staff was RUDE to say the least. We ordered a vegetarian dish and it tasted like it came from a can and all they had to do to make the dish was add some noodles and heat it up in the microwave. The shrimp dish with their special Malaysian sauce wasn't good either. Anyone can make the same dish and make it 10 times better. We ordered sashimi and was definitely not worth how much they were charging. The pieces were small and the fish was not fresh. They had boiled shrimp and imitation crab meat as sashimi. DO NOT COME HERE!

I had a bad feeling just after walking through the door on a Saturday because the restaurant was mostly empty. The lady who sat us seemed annoyed when we asked to be seated outside. It was unclear who our server was, a couple different people asked if we wanted to place drink orders. The hot tea I ordered was served at room temperature. Our dishes all came out at different times, and none of them were really any good. They used dark meat chicken in one dish that was supposed to be a curry but had no heat at all. The lemongrass chicken had actual stringy lemongrass in the dish, so it was very unpleasant to eat. We had a fried shrimp appetizer as well with way too much batter. They just seemed to use cheap ingredients, and even used those cheap plastic mugs that you see at chain restaurants to serve drinks in. The restaurant simply is not at all what they bill it as.

If you've never tried Malaysian cuisine, you're missing the boat!! Get with the program! Check out Penangs on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill!! PENANGS FOOD = dozens of tasty choices, lots of flavor, not too spicy (unless you request HOT), great presentation and good value PENANGS ATMOSPHERE = exotic, romantic PENANGS SERVICE = friendly, welcoming, charming staff!
PENANGS LOCATION = convenient, easy to find.

I'm not sure if Penang's has switched management since the previous postings that mentioned service issues, but I've been there more than a dozen times in the past year - and probably 100 times since Penangs opened in 2002 - and I've always had great service and fantastic food.

Another huge PLUS is that Penangs has a parking lot right behind the restaurant, which is wonderful since parking on other areas of Franklin Street is challenging, to say the least.

My name is Yvonne and I'm a sushiholic. I constantly crave good sushi. When I moved to Chapel Hill 3 years ago, I was delighted to find a cool place to get my "fix." I wandered into Penang on Franklin Street one day and I've been going back on a regular basis since then, mostly for the sushi, although many of the other dishes are excellent, too. If I miss a weekly visit to Penang's sushi bar, I start jonesing in a big way. In desperation, I've tried other places, but I've come to the conclusion that Penang has the best sushi in Chapel Hill/Carrboro. Maybe they slip some kind of special ingredient inside that is addictive. Whatever it is, I am hooked.

If you love sushi and want to enjoy it in a unique atmosphere, check out Penang on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill, NC. .... .... ..... ..... ......... ......... ........... .............. ......................

Dined on a Friday night and was promptly seated within 15 minutes (they do not take reservations for parties less than 6). Wait staff were very pleasant and helpful. Ordered the tom kee (sp?) soup made w/ cocconut milk, fresh cilantro, mushrooms, and chicken that was simply fabulous. The soup had a very well balanced group of flavors that is hard to achieve in Thai cuisine.

Menu is online and w/ great variety.

Coming from an Asian background I am not lying when I say that Penang has some of the tastiest, most authentic Asian cuisine in the Triangle. Not only is the food some of the best I've had in my 13 years living in Chapel Hill, but the staff is fantastic. I have read past reviews and was appalled to see some of the responses people have had. I have always found the people at Penang friendly, fast, and extremely knowledgable about the cuisine. The best thing about Penang is how vast the menu is, although you will see dishes that look familiar there are SO many new things one can try. I feel like I always find a new favorite after every visit to Penang. Some dishes that I would recommend are the Roti Canai as an appetizer, the Beef Chow Fun, the Char Keuh Teow, or the Peking Duck. The Sushi is also fantastic, I recommend going on a Thursday night because ALL of their a la carte Sushi is half off! It really is a great deal especially if you love Sushi. All in all Penang is a true gem to the Triangle area. I would recommend it to anyone who loves to try new things and truly appreciates great Asian cuisine!

I was staying in Chapel Hill for 5 days and was recommended to try the sushi at Penang. I was very pleased on my first visit and ended up coming back for lunch the next day. Cameron, the manager was a great help in letting me know of things in the area to do and the whole staff, including the owner Celine, made me feel right at home. I was introduced to a few dishes that you will not find anywhere else in America. The green curry was delicious! Try the black sticky rice for dessert- it was like nothing I have ever tasted. Out of the 5 days in Chapel Hill, NC, I ate at Penang for all but 2 meals (not including breakfast)- needless to say YOU GOTTA TRY IT!! Thanks for keeping me healthy! I will definitely be back!!

I recently went to Penang for the first time this past weekend. Not only was the food amazing but the service was great too. I was really surprised to read past reviews about bad service, because my server was very prompt, friendly, and knowledgable. Maybe the staff has changed since then? Anyways - I would highly recommend this place, especially if you are looking for a new, more innovative dining experience. The food is very authentic and so delicious (a good value for its price) - I would recommend the Rendang and Thai Basil Noodles. This is by far the best Asian food I've had since I was in Asia - nothing else around here compares.

Unlike some of the other reviews, the service has always been courteous to me. However, there's no denying it is slow, no matter how sparsely filled the restaurant is. Simple tasks like refilling water and ordering dinner for two take significantly longer than I'd like.

The food is very good but not superb. Unlike most authentic Asian places, you have to really pressure them to make food spicy enough. Even then, while it's very tasty, it never has the depth of flavor that would warrant the price: $14-17 for entrees, RICE EXTRA. As a result, while I eat Malaysian all the time on the west coast, it's a rare trip for me here. Too bad, because it's one of my favorite cuisines.

I had a wonderful time at Penang. Great mai yais, friendly and funny bartender, very nice, knowledgable, and well trained wait staff. And they have the most amazing dessert called iced kakang. It was a delicious and refreshing end to a great meal full of complex spices. Our waiter was worried I wouldn't like the dessert, because it is quite unusual, but was pleased when he saw that I had finished the entire dish.
All in all a very positive experience!

The food was slightly above average, the service was fantastic, but the manager/owner was the RUDEST that I have ever seen. My husband ordered a lamb dish that tasted fine, but 20 minutes after eating it, he was violently throwing up. We mentioned this to our waiter, who relayed the information to the female owner/manager. She immediately rushed to our table and rudely asked who was complaining about her food! She basically yelled at us and said that it could not have been her food that made him sick and then walked away. The server was so embarrased of this woman that he apologized numerous times. I will NEVER go back to this place nor recommend it to anyone.

I'm a big fan of Pan-Asian food, and this is the one place in the Triangle that I consistenly return to. Try the Penang Chow Kueh Teow noodles...the flavours are wonderful. The ambience of the place is also nice...kind of a big city feel to it. If you want to escape the large crowds...go on a week night.. it is completely different.

Service: 2 hours is not an acceptable timeframe for a dinner at a restaurant of this quality. When we (2 diners) entered the restaurant at approximately 430 to eat dinner we were 1 of 3 couples eating. It took at least 10 minutes for the host to return to take our drink/dinner order after seating us (it was the same person!!!). After this, the initial rounds of food came at an acceptable pace. However, we had to remind a different waiter that our glass of water and tea were not brought to us after we received the appetizer. The water came, then we had to request our tea a 3rd time! After we finished our dinner at 530 we asked for the dessert menu. It took 15 minutes for the menu to arrive. At this point it was our table, plus a table of 2 and a table of 4 in the entire restaurant. We ordered dessert and waited. It eventually came and was not warm (it was supposed to be freshly fried) and it tasted like el-cheapo boxed grocery store food. After this, we asked for the check, it came immediately. However, the return to pick-up the payment took absolutely too long. After waiting 10 minutes, I was forced to loudly announce that in another 10 minutes we were leaving without paying. The host looked up and went back to staring at his computer screen. After 8 more minutes, I began to ask the table next to us for a pen, so that I could write a note for the owner to contact me to receive payment for the food. At this point, the host hurried over and took our payment. It was a disappointing experience because overall the food was good; however, the service was so horrendous that the taste of the food was ruined.

Food: The steamed appetizer was good. The redang was very good. However, the fried banana dessert was not. It tasted like low quality ice cream + low quality chocolate sauce. It was very disappointing.

After several reasonable diner experiences at Penang with moderate service we now had a real bad dinner. We chose "boneless" Thai chicken, but nothing but bone...
The worst part was the reaction of "Management" with all kind of useless excuses and no gestures at all...

No more Penang for us... we know better places with better service where they serve all parties on the table at the same time.. they never learn how to do that at Penang!!

Just forget about Penang!

Where to start, I have been coming to this place time and time again, hoping that my next experience turns out better than the last. This place has so much potential but for some reason they refuse to manage it right. I must admit the food is good, though not always consistent. Penang lacks the policy of the costumer being right. The last time I went I got the wrong order and yet they still wanted to argue with me. I asked to speak with a manager and this mop head kid tells me he?ll take care of it. All in all I had to pay for everything I supposedly ordered and didn?t even get a ?thanks? walking out the door. The ambience is nice and the food is good when you get what you had originally ordered, but don?t expect your business to be appreciated. This is the only sit in restaurant with the fast food mentality. My friends insist the place has improved, but just in the last couple of months, I?ve had to pay for the wrong order twice, had the inconvenience of the restrooms being out of order on several occasions (isn?t that a health violation?), I?ve had the bartender ask me how to make a stoli vanilla and coke, and I always get the feeling that I?m not welcomed. Penang"s biggest problem is their costumer service skills; there are plenty quality restaurants in town where I would rather spend my money.

I brought my girlfriend here a couple of times when she came up from Charleston, S.C., and we both really like this place... which is great because we never agree on where to eat. She really likes the sushi and says that it's a lot better than sushi places in Charleston. I tried the "volcano" pork; I guess they call it that because it comes out on fire (literally) and it was delicious.
The atmosphere is very different from the other restraunts on Franklin. The decor makes the inside feel like a Japanese garden--very cool in my opinion. They have some couches tucked away in the bar area, which is a great place to sit and get a drink after dinner (speaking of which, try the mango martini). If you want a different place to take a date, especially if you live on campus, check this place out. Its worth the walk.

Coming from out of town to visit some friends in the area, I chose Penang for our outing after a good recommendation. It turned out to be a wonderful choice and I would recommend Penang to anyone. The atmosphere of the restaurant is enchanting -- unique asian styled lamps guild the high ceilings -- making for an intimate, cozy dinner. The waitstaff were friendly and flexible. My husband has a shellfish allergy and I am vegetarian, but the kitchen was able to accomadate both of us. I chose the curry vegetable delight, a perfectly spiced mix of fresh vegetables in a rich red curry. My husband chose the rendang lambchop, a dish of just meat smothered in a coconut milk, cinnamon and clove sauce. Our waitress was especially polite and prompt. Outstanding! Penang is a must try for anyone living in the area or out-of-towners alike.

I have been to this place only once before, and I thought it was wonderful. I drove from Raleigh just to go to the Penang that everyone raves about and I have never been more upset. Not only was I unsatisfied with the food and the server, but the two tables that were a cough away on either sides were having trouble as well. To my left, a couple waited a long time to pay for their bill and then the hostess walked over and plopped the bill book onto their table and trampled off. To my right, the server brought out the wrong food. Twice. Thank goodness my boyfriend and I got the right food, but I've had better at a Chinese take-out. I asked for spice and it was blander than ever. Our server gave me the bill before we even touched our dessert and that made me feel unwelcomed. I am never going back to Penang again.

Penang is one of my favorite restaurants in the Chapel Hill area. It is great for big parties small gatherings and romantic dates. The restaurant itself is has a unique decoration and a great ambiance. In the two years I have been going there the service and food, while always great, is at its best. There is a wide variety of things to choose from on the menu all of which are unique and wonderful, ranging from curries, noodle dishes, duck and fish plates. Penang also offers great sushi. A few of my favorite dishes include the Green Curry, Pad Thai, and Penang Chow Kueh Teow. If you have never tried this restaurant you are definitely missing out on Chapel Hills finest.

I became a citysearch fan just so i could rave about this restaurant, the food is just amazing... i have gone over and over again with friends ordering from all sides of the menu and i have yet to find something that didnt tickle my taste buds. The only thing that i wasnt a huge fan of, was the thai chili fish, some of my friends loved it but im just not a fish fan so i guess im kinda biased. The service has been quite good despite all these reviews saying otherwise. I dont know what the people are saying about the parking, there is a large parking lot in the rear that provides more than enough parking. This has also become one of my new favorite bars in town, its a really fun and relaxing scene and the decor is just amazing.

This restaurant makes a wonderfull lunch stop aswel, meals are wonderfully priced and come out amazingly quick. Also there isnt as much hubub going on as there is at the dinner scene. My friends and i like to come here between classes and get some good eats.

Seriously, unless you enjoy being treated unwelcomingly, DON'T GO! My friend and I went there for lunch, and I never knew that services at a restaurant can be this HORRIBLE! The waitress NEVER bothered to check on us once the whole time. She snatched the menu out of our hands after we're done ordering, and tried to take my friend's food before she was done. She did not once say "thank you!", even after we paid. She really mastered the skills of making people feel unwelcomed.
The food if ok if you like your food smothered in too much sauce. I can cook better than that! I didn't find the food authentic in anyway, and I lived many years in Singapore, where it's all about Chinese, Malaysian and Indian food.

This is going to be a compromise on your part. Expect really horrible service. But the pay-off for the wait and ignorance of good service is often worth it. The sushi chef is amazing! And the pineapple fried rice not only looks great sitting in half a pineapple, but it's taste is unbelieveable. Just realize that Penang takes patience for good food. And if you plan to drink the night away while enjoying good eats, buy a bottle of wine when you get there, because the wait staff doesn't come back often enough to keep you happy.

I'm from the Tri-State area and I was happy to see that they have a Penang branch in CH. The food is comparable to the branch up north. Try the crispy squid and volcano ribs...the only negative thing about this place is their service. I had to wait 15 minutes for them to refill my drink. They never checked back with us after they served us our food.

I became a citysearch member just so I could let everyone else now how awesome this restaurant is. In my four years here, nowhere else near Franklin have I found more tasty food, in such abundance, at a reasonable price and in a very unique atmosphere. Despite the sometimes fabulous, sometimes not-so-great service, the tasty appetizers (such as roti canai, malay satay), soups (seafood tomyam), and entrees (from the simple, cheap pad thai to the slightly more pricey thai chili jumpo shrimp) have made this my CH favorite. I have introduced many a friend to the tastiness and uniqueness of penang, to which they now reacquaint themselves as much as possible. My boyfriend from San Fran/NY insists on coming here EVERY time he visits. You should too!

I went the first couple of weeks that it opened. The line was out the door and down the steps. Thus some of the earlier reviews.
The parking is in back for those who dont frequent Chapel Hill very often.
The food is served as it would in Malaysia--when it is finished cooking. They dont hold it to complete the other orders at the table. I especially like the roti canai, penang chicken, thai green curry chicken, coconut rice, and some of the authentic thai jelly drinks(weird for those who have never tried it).
Dinner for two is about $20-30 with sodas. Lunch can be $5-8 (just me). If I get an appetizer to go--like the roti canai, its $4. The servers are great. I like all except one who is moody alot, but we aren't all perky, are we? Besides, I like the realness of different personalities.

Cons: no crazy specialty , bar drinks., no chocolate ;)~

Where to start. The vegetable dish we ordered was mushy and flavorless. The shrimp was overcooked. The penang curry was runny and bland. The service was atrocious; I don't think any of the wait staff made eye contact with us once. We walked out of the restaurant hungry, upset, and regretful. Do not waste your time on this overpriced, unfriendly restaurant.

I went there for lunch with two friends. The service was unacceptable - we asked the waitress about the size of the rice dishes, and she told us they were for one person only. We ordered two and were overwhelmed by the size - they are obviously meant for two or more people to eat. I ordered the chicken satay and received beef instead. The waitress ignored me when I corrected her and didn't offer to fix the problem. Another friend orderd a vegetarian dish that was supposed to come with rice. It didn't. It took forever to get our food and our bill, and they charged us for drinks we didn't order.

I was thoroughly disappointed in the food, the atmosphere and the service. I will never go back again.

The food has always been pretty good, and I agree with all the reviews that said the service was terrible when they were starting out. I think things have gotten better lately though. It looks like they have gotten rid of all the dopey, apathetic students and now have a more competent (if slightly surly) wait staff. I'd like it better if they served all the entrees at once though.
