(Asian Fusion): After all the years and hipster joints to go out of business, Five-Star is still the straight up shiz. I don't know how they've managed to do it year after year; but if you're looking for a place to take a first date or you just want to get wasted and see what happens...Five star rocks the 90's...in a good way.

The food is great and this is one of the hippest Chinese places in Raleigh. The decor is trendy and fun, and it is a hopping place to be on weekends after dinner.

yes, i know the staff, manager and owner. but only because my wife and i go there very often and through the years have become friends. and i get hugs and wonderful greetings when i enter. so yes, i may be somewhat biased. but i wouldn't continue to go back if the food wasn't delicious first. that's for damn sure! the decor is beautiful and music is always eclectic. we typically chow down on the apps as they offer a nice variety with subtle twists on some Asian classics. our favs our the heat-seeker shrimp, steamed dumplings, calamari and crispy green beans. my wife loves the scallion pancakes. as far as entrees go, i would recommend the crispy beef or 5 star chicken. NOTE-good to order a couple entrees amongst some friends and share.

great food and very reasonable prices in an awesome place. go get some.

I'd have to say that the hipster atmosphere and delicious fusion of Asian dishes provides a nice setting for a fun group dinner. However, the service leaves much to be desired. At one point, I had to head to the bar to serve my own table drinks as our waitress had made herself unavailable and non-existent for much of the night. Then to my surprise, when we asked her to divide our bill amongst a few couples at the end of our evening, she handed us a calculator and asked if we could figure it our ourselves. I don't spend nearly $200 and expect to do math. The manager was less than helpful and after they charged us incorrectly 3 different times, they were neither apologetic nor willing to deduct from the excessive gratuity that was included in the bill and which I would have been more willing to contribute had the service actually been worth it. The experience left a really bad taste in my mouth and while I'd recommend in terms of cuisine I would ask that you be very very patient as the help needs a little help.

Pros: Food is fantastic

Cons: Service is the worst I've experienced in Raleigh

I really do love this place. Great food and never really been disappointed. Only thing I dislike is the thai noodles will not satisfy your craving for pad thai.

This is one resturant that I keep coming back to. Not only is their food excellent, original and imaginative, it's also consistent in it's food quality and service. The staff is friendly and make you feel very welcome.

I have chance went to Raleigh to visit my friend, and she took me to The Five Star;
I'm so surprise of those delicious CHINESE food, (because I'm a Chinese and I
knew about our own food); Five Star has nice atomosphere, creative decoration, good service.
Thank you, ..FIVE STAR! Great Job..... and the 5 Star Shirmp is the BEST.
We (Chines) never go to C.F. Chang; if you like real Chinese Food, Five Star is the place.

This place has the best food I have ever had, better than the "wonderful" P.F. Changs. I usually have good service, but have had the experience with more than 6 people. The server won't come back because they know they will get their tip. However, they have huge portions. Whoever thinks they aren't big enough must be Jolly the Green Giant. But beware... if you aren't fluent with the chopsticks... they charge you $.75 to use a fork!!! And they don't even throw them away! They are steel, and dishwasher safe. Kind of a rip-off to me, even though it's only $.75. However, I will "fork" over the money, because it is a great place to eat!!!

Went to 5-Star about a week ago after not going for a couple of years, and really enjoyed it. Great food, good service, servers were friendly. I was checking out the site to send it to friends and saw the last two reviews and couldn't disagree more! The food we ordered was delish, and we're planning on going back with friends.

i was very surprised by the review i just read. i had just went to five star last thursday for the first time and really enjoyed my time there. the atmosphere was comfortable and our server was very polite , funny and genuine. she seemed to make good connections with most of all her tables.
im not to sure what the person before me was talking about. seemed that this resturant has changed some but i did not see anything wrong with that. most resturants ive been to with a large party automatically adds gratuity to a table with 5 or more in their party. usually it states in the menu. i guess that might go over looked if you dont take a moment to read. i highly reccomend this resturant unless you want the run of the mill pork fried rice... if thats the case then yes you should go to P.F changs...

Guys, I was blown away by the last review and how poorly 5 star was rated until I went there with friends tonight. Not only had they completely revamped the menu, but they had hiked the prices, cut the portions in half, and the server we had was horrible. Because we had six people in our party, we had an automatic 20% tip. She must have realized this as she came out to take our order, bring our food, and give us our bill. She never came in between. We all ran out of drinks and not once did she come by. There were only four tables in the house with people at them, and two were served by someone else. It was a hard pill to swallow since this had once been a favorite place to dine on our menu. Needless to say, there were six of us, and she would not divide the bill ( restaurant policy ) and then had the audacity to tell us no one else had ever said anything about that. I don't know about you, but I just don't carry a lot of cash in that part of the neighborhood of downtown Raleigh. What a disappointment this place is. I wouldn't waste my time. Ownership is obviously out of touch with what once brought people to this establishment. We should have known when there were only 14 people dining, including us, that we would be disappointed. Don't make the same mistake we did. Stay away and go for a more consistent Chinese restaurant such as P.F. Changs, where you know the service and food will be good. Man, I am so bummed! :O(

Pros: It looks nice on the inside

Cons: The menu is limited and the service is very poor

.

In a very ratty area of Raleigh (though, you wouldn't know it from the snobby demeanor) sits Five Star. The food: slightly better than your average Chinese food. The service: so snobby, you'd think you were in New York (you're not). The value: you're looking down the barrel of a $30 tab for $10 worth of food. If you're looking to receive poor service, buffet quality Chinese food, and pompous servers decked out in the hippest outfits Target has to offer - your first stop: Five Star.

I lived in Raleigh for over 10 years and Five Star has been my favorite restaurant for the past 5. I still drive 2 hours from the coast just to eat there. The portions are huge for the money and they are oh so tasty. My favorites are the pot stickers, the won ton soup and the Five Star General's chicken. In other reviews, I keep seeing names( i.e. Kung Pau, etc. do not exist on the menu at Five Star) for entrees that you would see at a typical Chinese restaurant where every menu is the same. If that is what you are expecting, then Five Star is not for you. You cannot compare Five Star to other Chinese menus. I've had most everything on the menu and it is all fabulous. The staff, atmosphere, service and quality are all A+.

I started with an order of fried spring rolls (you have to order 2) the price was reasonable at about $3 and the dipping sauces were good. I tried 5-star's kungpoa shrimp ($12) -- the serving size was decent, but it was more of a thai hot and sour shrimp. The shrimp quality was not the best, but decent. I was disappointed with this entre. I had a reasonably priced beer with the meal (I think about $3.50) and followed with a large piece of cake for desert ($5.50). Overall with Tip & Tax it was about $30 for just a so-so meal.

I should have eaten down the street at Jade Garden, and stopped by Baskin Robbins for desert.

Recommended for appatizers & beer.

Five Star has the best General Tso's chicken in town! The BBQ Pork is good too. The staff and management are always friendly. Mitch the bartender is AWESOME! If you're looking for a not-so-ordinary place to take that special someone for drinks and/or dinner, give Five Star a try... especially through the week when they are typically not as busy as the weekend.

What is up with the negative reviews! I went to Five Star and the food was great (love the heat seeker shrimp), the service excellent and the price quite reasonable considering the quality and portion size. The atmosphere rocks, plus, they carry my favorite Riesling, the Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt.

Five Star is an awesome restaurant! I always have a good time there, and really enjoy the food. The 5Star General's Chicken and Heat Seeker Shrimp are my favorites. Good place to eat, chill and drink a Kirin. Oh, the 75cent fork thing? It's a joke, people!!

I enjoy going after work - around 6 or so - to get a few drinks and have a snack. The lounge area is so comfortable and the music is downtempo and discrete. Great place for a few friends to be able to unwind without thumping music, loads of people, and cheap beer. It s get hectic later in the evening, though. I used to like going for dinner but their menu is very Americanized and they lack true vegetarian options. Auto-gratuity for 5 or more people, and they DO NOT SPLIT CHECKS. Avoid later at night- cover charges as it turns into a hip-cop club.

My first visit and as I enter the host demonstrates major attitude. He thinks he's funny, but really insulting. It's mid-evening and we're of a party of 9, upon entering, for some unknown reason, the last 4 of my group are charged a cover charge...why? Dinner was still being served, it's not even 10:30 yet. The bar service was soooo slow...and to top it off, the drinks are served in a plastic cup. For an after dinner drink, I recommend The Rockford.

We LOVE this place. It is one of the few places in the area that is HIP looking with great food. We always bring local friends who haven't been there and friends visiting from out of town there. Everyone always thinks it the best. What other chinese restaurant gives you white meat chicken without having to ask and pay extra, and you know for sure it's chicken. THE BEST!!!!

Five Star, rubbish star I give the food a ? star (if that). The food was terrible! I thought the menu sounded promising, uniquely traditional, but they just couldnt deliver the goods. For example, if you want to serve a Chinese eggplant dish, use real Chinese eggplant! Is that too logical? The only spice I could taste in the shrimp dish was sugar Hello, why bother calling it spicy garlic shrimp? Yes, SOME dishes should be served with a touch of sweetest, but why the overkill! Anyway, the duck was ok, nothing to brag about. I still think if you want duck, go to Red Palace, where you can appreciate the true flavors of a duck roll. As for the bar/dance club, its only good on Fridays Dont get me wrong, its a good concept (restaurant/bar with dance floor), but the restaurant part needs lots of work!

to all the bad reviewers out there: don't see five star as a restaurant. see it as a nice club/lunge that serves food. i never go to five star for its food menu. it's a relaxing place to hang out with your friends. the management is very friendly. if you just want good chinese food, then go to red palace, or furtune palace. five star attracts its own type of audience, just like other establishments(e.g. long branch for country folks, flying saucer for frat boys. pardon the stereotype). you will know if 5star is your scene or not the minute you step in.

The food is excellent and there are always several vegetarian options as well as chicken, pork, and beef. The menu is small but I have taken over 20 people there over the years and everyone has commented that they loved their food. Great place for large groups of people or a date. The music is smooth r&b, jazz, hip-hop, and ambient. None of that awful hard techno crap. Hippest place in Raleigh without the pretention or big price tag.

While this restaurant has an ultra-hip decor, the food falls short of any "Five Star" establishment: the menu was short and few, the food was over-priced considering the quality and most importantly..taste. The "hot and sour soup" might as have been called "vinegar with tofu" and the "beef with broccoli" reminded me of cardboard. Not to mention, these folks charge 75 cents per fork.

after noticing the last 2 reviews about "5 star" I have to admit that I just jumped on the bandwagon.
I remember some of my friends saying "wow that place is so good! you gotta try out their dumplings and they kung pao chicken". after trying it out I really didnt want to comment on the food (I figured I would rate the place on it's looks) but since we're on the topic of food, their dumplings and their kung pao chicken were not as "great" as I heard...
who's cooking in the back anyways?
thumbs down.

Cons: um....???

.

I wanted to like 5Star, but I agree with vermeer64. I'm not sure who is giving good reviews on the food, but the cuisine was pathetic. The ambience is great, and the service, however, the food was mediocre. The Won-Ton Soup was flavorless. They used small 'popcorn' shrimp for the shrimp dishes that were white in color. Tip: cook shrimp at a higher temperature to bring out a nice red color and use the jumbo, 8-12 count kind. The vegetables needed seasoning and the beef tasted like the samples you get when passing through the mall food court. Another tip: Chinese food is meant to be shared. Bring out empty plates for each patron and present the dishes on larger serving plates. That way, everyone gets to try several items. I'm glad I tried this establishment, and I will probably go back. But only for the nightlife at the bar.

Cons: Food

.. I am not sure who is giving this place goodreviews but I hope that the knowledgeable and intelligent people who read these reviews are not swayed by the best of. Interesting enough in looking at the other Chinese restaurants on the list in the nation of which I have been fortunate to sample I do agree on Seattle's Shanghai Garden and Chicago's Phoenix as top notch. As for Five Star, it is simply another PF Chang wannabe and does not succeed. It is insulting to put it in the ranks with the other Chinese restaurants on the list and cannot be believed. In Raleigh, I believe the two three authentic Chinese restaurants are: 1. Crystal Palace: with its authentic and simply fantastic Peking Duck. 2. Fortune Garden: great home style Taiwanese cuisine. 3. Imperial Garden: truly well trained Chefs. Five Stars rating is extremely misleading. Not worthy

Cons: worst service, overpriced food, unpalatable

This place is poorly managed and service is horrible. I work part-time for a local hotel, and when I called to inquire about their restaurant, they told me they could not fax or send a menu, and did not wish to have refferals. I went to their restaurant to try out their service, and it lacked. The decor reminded of a late 18th centry brothel, and the people dressed about the same. I would not recommend anyone torture themselves by attempting to dine here.

I met some friends and co-workers there for a party. I really dig this place.

The pan-Asian food is delish. Caution: if you're looking for plain old Chinese food you can order from anywhere, then this place is not for you.

It's not the food savvy people go for, it's the lounge loung. Small but tres cool. Considering the lack of lounge life in the Triangle this is a good place to just chill with friends and have a drink.
Good DJ spinning and the bartenders were quite friendly and know how to make a good martini.

Cons: Need more loung space

Stopped in one early evening and though atmosphere was interesting..... the food was not. Ordered noodle bowls which were awful and the service was atrocious. This place definitely does not belong in the top five of best chinese restaurants in the triangle. The menu was very limited and though the atmosphere attempts to be trendy it is merely a guise.

Pros: Nightlife, Friendly staff

Cons: expensive for guys

I ordered some take-out and I was'nt happy when I opened up the bag...yuk! The Hot & Sour soup was kinda muddy with little flavor. The chicken was supposed to be Gen Tsao's. It looked like they forgot the sauce. I really think I could have done better at home with a William-Sanoma cookbook. I give 2.5 stars...and not to the chef ;~(

I'm not big on Chinese food but recently enjoyed P.F. Chang's. I decided I would check this highly rated Local spot out. Food was fresh and above average, but no match for P.F. Chang's. I wasn't impressed with the service or the limited selection on the menu. Take this advice from me, If you are looking for quality Chinese food with much better service, a better atmosphere, parking, all for the same price, Check out P.F. Chang's. 5 Star is OverRated!

I have eaten at 5STAR a bunch of times, and I always like it. I have gone there for birthdays, my college graduation. It is elegant and serves excellent 'chinese' (well american chinese or something) and is very reasonable priced.

Pros: downtown, moderately priced

Skeptics step aside as late night dining is done well here. The subdued moods in decor is perfect and the food even better. Smart money goes on the General's Chicken with a Blue Star Wheat to rinse. Chat up the staff as it might score you some perk points on the next visit. Don't fear taking a date here as the prices are sub $20 per person.

Five Star is located in an unassuming part of the warehouse district, but don't let that stop you. The food was outstanding and the atmosphere was subdued and romantic. I recommend the spicy beef. The meal was enough for two people, no scrimping here! Also, the wine list and service were also very good.

My Girlfriend and I ate at five star two weeks ago and it was awsome. We shared the roasted duck rolls which I thought were outstanding. My girlfriend had the General chicken and we both agreed it was the best we've ever had. I had a lighter chicken dish with an awesome ginger sauce. Two bottles of wine later we were loving life. The wine list is small but slightly esoteric. We love this place and can't wait to go back. By the way the Saturday night party is great too.

In Short
Although it was once an old tobacco warehouse, be prepared for serious city chic as you walk through the door. A long, stone bar and minimalist art complete the mood. The nouvelle Asian cuisine includes teriyaki…
