I had to submit a rebuttal to Sarah R.'s review because on the contrary, I think Shokudo is still the best Japanese restaurant in West Jefferson. I frequent this restaurant weekly when it first opened over 5 years ago and found the food to be very good. I always order the combination shrimp/filet mignon or the scallop/filet mignon and the food was always hot and plentiful. Since they have added the appetizers, I always order the Shrimp Roll and Crab Rangoon, too -- Yummy.

I have since moved to Charlotte and have yet found a Japanese restaurant with the same shrimp and ginger sauces. I visit West Jefferson monthly and was just there last month and found the new location to be modern, fresh, and clean. I love the design! They now serve sushi and the ??Funky Roll? was funky in a very good way. The food tasted a little different from how I remembered but it was still good and tasty compared to the other little chinese/japanese restaurant in town. I saw some regular customers there that I used to say hello to when I used to frequent this restaurant on a regular basis-- their loyality must say something about the food. Through my recommendation, friends from Charlotte have frequent this restaurant and commented that the ??vegetable and shrimp were fresh and the portion was just right?. The only down side is that they are very busy during Sunday lunch but isn't every restaurant in W.J busy on Sunday after church?

We were so excited when Ashe Co. finally got its first Japanese place to eat. We love Japanese and quickly began going there. At first it was okay, but the more we went the worse the food got. The soup would be cold and the shrimp was the most chewy, frozen, tiny, cheap shrimp I've ever seen. I could cook better shrimp out of a box. The steak was always tough. Thus, they only decent option was the chicken. The food was over priced for the quality. We have several friends who say they've gotten sick and vomitted a couple of hours after eating there, but I have not heard any factual reports of santitation issues. However, we are glad there is now a new Japanese place and Shokudo isn't our only option.
