Why on earth would a HARDWARE STORE only be open until 12:00 on a Saturday??

I purchased a replacement part that indicated it was compatible with most major toilet brands, but did not fit in my toilet. I repackaged the item and returned to the store with receipt in hand. I was told that they could not sell it to someone else since it had been opened and that I was "trying to rip them off". I placed the item on the counter and went to where the other replacement parts were located. Upon return to the counter, the assistant confirmed they would not honor the return/exchange. I then sought out the woman (owner) to inquire as to why. She began raising her voice to me and said that "I didn't know what I was doing" and that was the problem, not the part. When I pointed out that the package said it should fit most toilets and that I felt there was a problem with the part itself, she shoved her desk chair aside and stormed past me to the front counter, yelling that she would take the return but charge me a 20% restocking fee and that she would refuse to sell me another part. She instructed the assistant to process the refund, minus the restocking fee and indicated he was not to sell me another part. At that point, I told her that she was one of the most unpleasant people I had done business with to which she replied "I feel the same way about you".

This is a small, family run hardware store that I have to go out of my way to support and can say I will never be back. I am shocked at the treatment I received by one of the owners.

1st, couldn't find the door hardware i was looking for anywhere local whatsoever. went to 2 other good local and about 4 national stores only to find low end hardware.....online had it and price was better, but after shipping and the wait, just not a comparison point.

so called briggs and explained what i was looking for and while they said they had them i was skeptical. its hard sometimes to find a store with quality hardware, faucets, and other pieces, etc that are "different " from what everyone else has from lowes and HD.

walked in on lunch hour, looked for a few moments and was greeted by what i believe was one of the family or owner asking me if i needed help. explained to him and had my stuff in 10 seconds along with 2 other items he went and got for me.....

went for selection - was pleased with both selection and especially service. good family owned place to support, not just cause its family owned but b/c they really back it up.

Pros: Service, Selection

Cons: price if any....

Many will recognize the name of Briggs Hardware as a Raleigh icon. Founded in the 1860's, the store spent almost 130 years in downtown Raleigh and the original building is marked as a National Historic site. It recently relocated to North Raleigh and offers a nice alternative to the mega Hardware stores of today. One nice service which is unique to Briggs is their recycling program. The company takes old oil and batteries and recycles them for free of charge - a very nice service. The employees also will walk you to whatever you need - and not simply say "On Aisle 13." Highly recommended.
