Had my first meal there this week at lunch time, ordered a sweet & sour chicken dish. I was surprised by how good the food was. Also, their presentation of the food, friendliness and the cleanliness of the place does not lack of anything.

pho 9 n 9 sells extra large pho for $7.50 vs. $10.95 at lotus leaf cafe.

Not saying lotus is bad or anything, just want to let some of my fellow pho lovers that there is a choice if price is your concern especially in these economy.

This place seems to get better and better over time. Both the appetizers and the entrees are always very fresh and very good. The cilantro and other vegetables are fresh and well prepared. The noodle dishes are my favorite. The waitress is very willing to help you with your selections. This place is really very good.

Cons: Decor

One of the finest restaurant's I have had food at. If you are are a weenie for the Asian spice, I would recommend not (or choose a spice level of 2). Must go place!

don't return bad food because they will call the police on you and I'd rather eat 50cent cup o noddles. I got treatened by waiters and owers by returning food with dog hair in it and I thought I to complaint about how dirty this place is....make sure you have medical insurance before you eat there.

First time after living only 2 miles fromit for the past 4 years- always went to Neo China until recently when i realized that their quuality had tanked.

Wanted good food the night of the NCAA Championship game- got take out and was vvery pleased. The Sambal Eggplant was sort of a gamble- not having any idead what it woul dbe like- it was absolutely excellent. Lemongrass chicken was very good as well.

The menu is now being revamped per the lady who rung up my order. In this time of pinching pennies- do yourself and a local merchant a favor and go here. Neo who?

I was unsure about this place, having heard from some friends that they didn't enjoy it and food was loaded with MSG. I have an allergy to MSG and I found no hint of MSG in my steamed grouper.

Every time we have gone to the Lotus Leaf (more than half a dozen) we have been impressed. The servers are attentive and knowledgable (low turn over: we have had one of two servers everytime we have been in the last two years). The owner (previously the chef) has greeted us everytime we have been and made us feel welcome. Even though it is in a strip mall, the creative porch area makes you feel miles away from a Food Lion. And the food is delicious. The menu is thick so ask your server for recommendations to suit your tastes. In the fall and the winter, nothing warms your soul like a bowl of pho soup or a clay-pot entree. The only place to get quality pho and ask for the chilled, unfiltered sake if you have never tried it. It is sold by the bottle, but it is refreshing and slightly sweet.

I was unsure about this place, having read some of the prior reviews, especially regarding MSG. I found no hint of MSG in my steamed grouper and my wife found none in her excellent vegetarian duck (it's actually tofu, but you wouldn't think it). I am a confirmed carnivore but will try the tofu next time. The bite I had was that good! There is a whole page on the menu dedicated to vegetarian dishes. That is rare in my experience. As a carnivore, I will leave others to judge its quality.

Service was efficient and friendly. Mind you, we dined at 5pm on a Saturday and it wasn't overly busy. We dined outside on the patio. It is enclosed and covered. Even with the numerous fans in the ceiling, I am not sure what it would be like in the height of a North Carolina summer - seating inside is minimal.

Desserts were light and refreshing, just what you need after a spicy meal. The Cafe Saigon was the most unique coffee I have ever had - no sugar required!

Portions are not overly large. We left feeling well-satisfied but not overly-stuffed. To sum up - we will be going back.

Cons: None that I can think of

There is definitely nothing to rave about here. Everything from the service to the food was horrible. My husband and I were there for an early dinner. The waiter was not attentive or friendly. The thai chili sauce they used was the exact thai chili sauce that I have in my fridge that I get at the asian market for $1.50 a bottle.

My fiancee and I have been going to the Lotus Leaf regularly for over a year (nearly once a week) and she long before that. The food is always good. Some of my favorites are the basil duck salad and the shrimp and scallops over rice vermicelli. The carved-out pineapple was my favorite over the summer. I've seen some reviews in CitySearch that appeared to be skewed based on something other than having actually eaten at the Lotus Leaf. I hope the readers will see through that and not deny themselves a truly authentic and very enjoyable Vietnamese dinner. There's so much that we enjoy about the Lotus Leaf Cafe that, rather than try to list them all, I would just suggest that readers decide for themselves. You won't be disappointed.

A great little restaurant in Cary that serves Vietnamese and a little French food. Charming decor and art collection reminiscent of the colonial era. The food we had was excellent. Nice wine list. Definitely try the french-influenced desserts. Live jazz was unexpected and nice. Enclosed patio can be a little chilli in the Winter. We highly recommend reserving a table inside on cold days.

We would like to say thanks to everyone who wrote an honest review, good or bad. For those who are truly interested to know about our Pho, here is the secret: it is cooked in the Northern style, "Pho Bac" (the only in the area). It is well praised by the News & Observer's food critic Greg Cox, You can read the complete review from our website or from the N&O. The secret to taste is a lot of meat stock, rock sugar and liquorice. The recipe can probably still be obtained at the William Sonoma at Crabtree where we held the last cooking class. For the reviewer who was wondering about our french infuenced menu (and identity), thank you for your honest observation. Vietnam was a French colony for almost a century until 1954. It is common to find French dishes on elite restaurant menus in Vietnam even today. There are also many notable Vietnamese restaurants in the US with that theme including Le Colonial in Chicago, Crustacean in Las Vagas, and LA. Our french-influenced dishes, when available, are usually well loved by our guests, including creme brulee, lobster bisque, Asian bouillabaisse. The "Grouper in Banana Leaf" dish you had was also found on a old Vietnamese-French menu. XO sauce was added by us to intensify the flavor. You can read more about this dish on our website's Recognitions page. For comments regarding our location and size, we apologize but a sidewalk cafe is what we are. We only have 26 seats and the sidewalk patio. :-)

The Lotus Leaf really need to work on their foods and service if they want to stay in business. The restaurant is small, cleanliness alone would be a reason not to come back, and it is located in a strip mall pretty much next door to a Food Lion. Sorry, but this is not my type of restaurant. I expect great service and if I have a question, that my server knows exactly what he's talking about. This is defintely two thumbs down in my book. Pho Cali is more authentic and has better food. In actuality, fantastic food that is NOT laced with msg. Avoid Lotus Leaf, it's not worth it. The whole thing about hole in the wall restaurants are fantastic do not apply to this one. Do yourself a favor and just have KFC across the street.

I've seen many mixed reviews about the Lotus Leaf Cafe. People go on and on about how they loved the place or how they hated it. Before you write a review for a restaurant, a bar, a pub or whatever it is; please bear in mind that NO place is capable of pleasing EVERYONE. Cleanliness, atmosphere, service, food,
drinks and etc. depends on individuals. Nothing is perfect.

Expectations of the great things a place can offer. Why would you want to do that? Shouldn't life be about taking things as they are and make the best out of it rather than just put on a pouty face and mumble about how things should be. If that's the case, shouldn't YOU be running an establishment and make the
perfect place to dine/drink?

I, for one have dined at the Lotus Leaf Cafe. Food was great, service was mediocre and yes, it's located at a strip mall. Will I come back to the Lotus Leaf Cafe again? YES! Let it be lousy service or it's not located at the high-end place where you'd be ashamed to take your posh friends to dine. But one thing that attracted me to the place is that people there do not treat you as customers. They treat you as a friend. Yes, there are times when the servers will get on your nerves. But have you had a friend where he/she does not make you mad at times?

No, Lotus Leaf Cafe is not a perfect place. I may be old and senile and I'm not perfect either. But then again... are you?

I went into Lotus Leaf tonight expecting a really great Vietnamese meal and I have to say I was a little disappointed. The food was not bad by any means, but I just felt the restaurant is suffering from a bit of an identity crisis. We arrived and found that they do have a nice large patio, but inside the restaurant is surprisingly small. It is the only place I've seen where the outside seating seems more spacious than the inside. A jazz band was playing in the corner, not really what you would expect for a Vietnamese restaurant. The menu included things like Lobster Bisque and Creme Brulee, not that these foods are bad, it just didn't seem to fit. The grouper that is served in a Banana Leaf, very neat concept, but it didn't live up to my expectations flavor wise since the menu describes it as being in a "spicy XO sauce". In fact all I could really pickup up in the dish was the ginger, and it was a little overpowering. The fish is served on rice noodles and with a few green beans on the side, and it wasn't very filling. My husband ordered the Curry Coconut Chicken, which the menu neglects to mention is actually dark meat chicken. Since he dislikes dark meat chicken or any meat on the bone, he had to send it back. He ordered the special stir fry that is served in a cored out pineapple, and it was the best part of the meal. The Fried Banana dessert, is actually bananas wrapped in a spring roll skin, and I felt they would have been much better in a light batter. Our server was clearly distracted by a large table he was waiting on outside, so he was absent for long periods of time and didn't once offer to refill our drinks which didn't help my overall impression. I'm happy I tried it but I don't see this restaurant becoming one of my regular haunts.

Met some friends for a going away dinner (I'm moving). Our server, Chris, was outstanding. I ordered the Ginger Glazed Salmon and it was AMAZING. Best Salmon I have ever had. My friends both got a Tofu/Vermicelli dish and they enjoyed theirs as well. "Chris" told us that the Saki was on special so we appreciated that. It was a wonderful evening and very positive experience. My only regret is that I just found it and I'm moving! When you go ... be sure and ask for Chris. Enjoy! I rate them an 11.

My friends and I do an "Ethnic Dinner Night" every month. This month was Vietnamese. My friend Julie is Vietnamese, so she definitely made she she could go this this past month's ethnic dinner night. She said she hasn't had decent Vietnamese food in YEARS! Though I wouldn't recommend Lotus Leaf for large groups of people, they really made an effort to accomodate our group of 16! Make sure you call ahead if you have more than 4 people. Seating is limited.

I had the summer rolls - extremely good! And then had the duck as the main entree. Wow! Explosion of juicy flavor! Their bowls of soup are ridiculously huge and well worth the $9.00 price tag. They are a meal in themselves! Their cheesecake for dessert was quite good as well.

We didn't have any complaints among the group. Julie said it was fantastic and talked to the chef a bit afterwards. Very authentic, VERY good!

As the result from City Search, we came to your restaurant for the second time since you opened. Well, the food was horrible, I get better quality from Chinese buffet. The vinyl decoration is as cheap as it get, not to mention the cleanliness. Sorry, you might have an off night. I rather take my money to Pho Cali as least that what I am expected.

Have been several times. Always good. Get spring rolls to start with. Then Grilled Aubergines (Asian Eggplant) with Shrimp and Crab is best. Filet was great. Avoid the Crispy Noodles Stir-Fry. We skipped desert but had sake. You can't miss with this restaurant if you like Asian/Vietnamese food.

Pros: Patio dining, refreshing menu

Cons: limited seatings

The food at the Lotus Leaf is alright. I found the food plain and ordinary. The location is horrible and the restaurant is so small it's hard to dine with a group of friends. I'm vietnamese and truthfully we make the same dishes at home and it's much better. I say this restaurant for a first time diner is okay, but you won't fully grasp what vietnamese cuisine is. Try it if you'd like but I say it isn't worth it.

The people from the new restaurant can learn a few things. for less than half the money, we got twise as much, quality of food and service.

The food at the Lotus Leaf is probably the best I've had in the Raleigh area. The restaurant itself is tastefully decorated, without being over the top. The serving sizes are large too, both my date and I brought home a doggy bag. Our waitress, I cannot remember her name but she was wonderful. Attentive, but not pushy. We'll be back for sure.

you wouldn't go to a strip mall that houses a food lion, new china and a pizza place called what else - 'Original Michelangelo's Pizza' to try out vietnamese cuisine, BUT you should. the food is a welcome change from regular pan-asian cuisine that include conventional thai and chinese restaurants. however, the ambience gives away the fact you are still dining in a strip mall, and the service makes you feel you were at a take out. we were hoping to try out this place and grab a quick dinner, but despite our best efforts the staff took the better part of 2 hours to bring us a main course and dessert. we have not tried the friday and saturday night live music, but that might be the saving grace to visit this place again.

My wife and I celebrated our 30th anniversary here and Kai (the owner) and his staff made it a memorable experience for sure. We have now been there three times in the last six weeks and we've fallen for the food, the service, the music and the atmosphere. Everything we've had has been exceptional and the two servers we've had have been as well. This is a real find and a place worth visiting. Be sure to try the Weasel Coffee and get them to explain it to you afterwards!!

I was there on a date and the server was constantly checking on us. She kept asking if we wanted more wine (our glasses were half full) but she didn't notice our waters were completely empty. She never took the menus from our table. She kept upselling. When delivering our entrees, she didn't know which sauce went with which meal. While we were eating our entrees, she brought by the special of the night so we could see it, but she never even told us about it. The servers were all standing around talking, yet there were 4 tables surrounding us waiting to be bussed. She wrang up the bill wrong. Decent food, horrible experience.

I arranged to meet a friend from out of state and I was coming in from Charlotte, based on this restaurants nearly 10 rating. I got there first and it is just a little take out kind of place, VERY casual, plastic sheeting to the outdoor patio. I am sure the food is good, but DO NOT arrange to meet anyone here expecting ambiance. Had to scramble on phone at last minute to go somewhere else in a totally new city. Would have helped if someone had mentioned this in the ads. Good for college students and those with jeans on.

The food at Lotus leaf was pretty good. But the meal was ruined for us because of the slow service. The appetizers and the main course were served really fast. However, after we were served the main course, our waiter just disappeared. He came by after a half hour and we asked him for the dessert menu. He disappeared for another half hour and by then we were so frustrated that we decided not to have any dessert.

Maybe it was just our waiter because I could see that the table next to ours was being served really well by another waiter.

All in all it became a bad experience because of the horribly slow service.

I ate at the Lotus Leaf Cafe last night for the first time, and I was truly impressed! The service was exceptional. My waiter took time to explain a bit about the history, food, and methods of the chef. He also told me about a wine tasting/jazz event they host on Fridays. The food was fabulous. I had spring rolls, which were obviously made fresh with a tangy sauce. Then I tried their Shanghai Crepe. It was delicious! It had just enough coconut in the shell to flavor, but not overpower, and tender pork and shrimp in the filling. The dipping sauce provided was a perfect complement. I tried a new wine off their reasonably priced list (Lotus Chardonnay for only $5/glass), and it was quite good as well. I will definitely be back soon.

Cool setting and decorations. Menu and food are excellent. Service is better than average but if you could talk to the owner, he will tell you lots of interesting stuff about the menu and decorations.

Best kept secret in Cary (but not for long)! Will rival Hot Point, Cao and Tasca Brava as Cary's best! Worth coming TO Cary to eat.

i had some superb vegetarian spring rolls, a little salty, but the best ive had in a while. i had the textured tofu & tomatoes... its not typical tofu (which is a nice change from the norm), but more like mock-chicken strips, some type of textured soy protein (reminded me of a type of gardenburger brand chicken i have tried). very tasty. my boyfriend tried the steak textured tofu & peppers i believe... again, this was more like TVP, his was excellent. I would definitely return, but would have to wait until payday, luckily when we went we had a coupon ;) i must say as i read in another user's review, the value was good because you are served a large portion, but i would prefer smaller portions and smaller prices. the waiter was excellent as well

My boyfriend and I had dinner at Lotus Leaf Cafe and very much enjoyed both the food and the service. We were disappointed that the Lotus Leaf special was no longer served, though still listed on the menu, but the Beef Pho and the Eggplant with Crab and Shrimp were excellent. The Creme Brule was also very tasty. Our dinner, including a bottle of wine, an appetizer, two entrees, and dessert was about $65 with tip, which seemed very reasonable. We shall return.

I really like Vietnamese food but it's difficult to find in the Raleigh area. Lotus Leaf's varied menu accomodates everyone - including vegetarians. I had the vegetarian summer rolls - they were standard fare with a delicious and unique peanut sauce. For an entree I had the tofu with noodles - it was delicious and spiced just right. I will definitely go back to try their other vegetarian items! One note, though : their prices are slightly high but not far off from other restaurants considering the portion size - I would rather have less food at a cheaper price!
