Put the coordinates 39.356394,-100.719556 into google maps. See all those long skinny buildings with little wire cubes coming from them?

Those are where all the parents live, all 834 (yes, over eight hundred dogs) parents that produce puppies for Sharon Munk.

This is the reality of the puppies that are sold by the pet pad. Do you really want a puppy that was bred in a place that keeps 800 adult dogs in cages their entire lives?

My husband and I purchased 2 dogs from here after careful consideration. We researched the breeder and did not find any credible evidence that she runs a puppy mill. You can look up USDA inspections online for breeders. In my opinion, not every large scale breeder is a puppy mill however I realize not everyone will agree with that. They are both opinions, and you know what they say about those. My two dogs, one is almost 10, the other about 3 are in good health, happy, well adjusted and have never had odd any health issues. These two are actually the best dogs I have ever had as far as temperment, health and just overall good dogs. When we got them the staff was pretty nice to us. I never felt they were rude and one of the managers remembered us from when we got our first dog. No, this place is not for everyone but I don't regret getting my two babies from there.

I got my Corgi (CH Kiwis Princie Prince) I absolutly love him ! And i would deffinatly buy from here again. The only problem i have with the pet pad is the staff. The staff is very rude. and seems to allways have some kind of a stink eye on me while i browse the store. Other then that, nice location, O.K prices, great dogs.

You cannot say what a puppy mill is till you have actually seen one or rescued a pup from there! this place is actually very clean, yeah the manager and owner need to be a little more personable but i got my newest dog from there and they were very helpful! i took my new dog to the vet and he is happy and healthy! so if he truly was in some "dirty" place don't you think he would have something wrong with him? also all the puppies there are UTD on shots etc. they are a respectable local business that actually tell you the information about the puppy you are adopting. they may discount the price but that gives the customer a opportunity to take home a puppy and give them a good home with a loving family etc. ALL BREEDERS charge a large amount for a PURE BREED dog. Also about the SPCA, yeah they are a great shelter and place to adopt a puppy or a dog but then you have to be aware of the puppy or dogs past. At least here you know you are getting a puppy that you can start from the beginning. i am happy with my new puppy !

Dear Jane S. and Stephen K,
Although I agree with you that calling the Pet Pad itself a puppy mill is a bit erroneous I think it is important to question the source from which the doggies in the small 10 in x 10 in windows originate from. No Jane S. I too doubt that the Pet Pad in Cary is a puppy mill because none of the employees there are competent enough to breed two dogs. In fact, they were not even knowledgeable enough to provide me with paper work detailing where they recieved the puppies from. They purchase their dogs from, and therefore support, puppy mills. If you would much rather support a local business how about supporting your local charitable non-profit animal rescue? Or perhaps you could purchase from a local, credible breeder. I am a college student, and I work for that minimum wage that you speak of with such disdane. I would be appalled to provide the kind of "customer service" that I recieved when I went into the pet pad (of course this was before I saw the puppies- after that it wouldn't have mattered if the employees had suckled my toes and fed me bonbons; you couldn't pay me to go back). To people like steven k. who does not regret his "dission" and would "hae" no problem buying another dog from the pet pad... It comes as no surprise to me that you are not intelligent enough to look beyond the term "farm raised" and the fact that your dog came with papers I think you should question the credibility of said papers. All the papers guarentee is that your dogs parents were two pure breed dogs. Most of the dogs that have been surrendered to the SPCA come with that.

In brief: this place, and people who patronize this establishment, are horrendous. If you doubt the cruelty that is occuring here feel free to join me during the dog days of summer or on a freezing winter day at the stores dumpster on shipment day. Since the dogs are shipped like cargo you can usually find at least ten carcasses from lack of food and exposure to the elements. Don't believe me? See for yourself one day.

I have shopped at Pet Pad for 7 or 8 years as I want to support a local business. I do not ever buy dogs from a store, I meet the breeder in person and see the kennel for myself as well as adopt from agencies.
But my main problem with this place is the owner has no customer service skills. The staff is pleasant so I overlooked the owners faults. I just bought crickets to feed our many frogs and lizards. I even asked the sales person that rang me up is everything was in the bag (I had so many plastic bags of fish, plants and crickets I didn't want to unpack everything to look) she informed me "yes, that's everything"
When I got home I found 2 bags of crickets missing, I checked my car twice before calling the store. I called and spoke to Bronson who has been working there for awhile and nows me and my husband, he also helped with my order that day. I asked him about the crickets, he said he didn't see them and the girl was at lunch could he have my phone number and call me back. I agreed and told him I would also look one more time in my car. I called back to tell him I did not find them, he informed me the OWNER WILL CHECK THE SECURITY VIDEO FOOTAGE AND GET BACK TO ME.
Do they really think I, a longtime weekly customer, wants to steal $3.68 worth of crickets? How rude! Sorry to the staff but I am taking our business elsewhere, this is not how you treat a customer! No one has called me back yet either!

This place is horrible and 100% has puppy mills puppies...first of all a real breeder does not produced that many puppies and puuies form differnt mixes. These puppies and this store has nothing but bad rewiews. The puppies are kept in glass cages and are very rude people. The prices of everything are $$$$$$$ as heck and they can not even tell you the size of a puppy fully grown. You can get puppies that are healthy for about 75% cheaper.

So far as I can tell, Pet Pad just discounts the dog until it's sold, and considering how over priced they are to begin with, I don't think they lose much money there. I go in every once in a while to play with the pups, after all, it's not their fault they are from a high volume breeder. 3 years ago, my boyfriend at the time bought a puppy for me from there because he felt sorry for her. She had been there for a month and discounted a couple times. The dog so far is healthy, despite having tape worms when she came home from the store. However, she has absolutely no dog manners/ social skills and is, therefore, very hard to train; she is seriously ADHD, and still isn't 100% potty trained-- all signs of high volume breeder dogs. They are taken from the mother too early to learn basic dog behavior and pack skills so they can reach the store and be sold before they get too big/ old. They are put in cages and allowed to urinate and poop on wire drop through cage floors setting up a behavior that is hard to break. High volume breeders often inbreed, use poor breeding stock, and skimp on vet treatment to increase profits which cause the puppies to be sickly and have mental/ behavioral issues. The dogs/ puppies lack socialization, and are stuck in a cage all day with nothing to do but chew on wires or a rubber mat. There is not enough room here to even go into the suffering of the breeding stock. Pet Pad gets all their dogs from the same woman. She, the store owner/ emloyees, and the vet for which they hand out spay/neuter coupons claim she is not a "puppy mill", or high volume breeder, that all her dogs are whelped/ kept in the house and are handled from birth. There is no way that could be possible considering the sheer volume of puppies and number of different breeds this woman is breeding. Just take a look at their expected and sold lists; there are at least 20 different breeds on there. Redeeming qualities: They endorse spay/ neuter. The store itself has always been clean. The staff has always been friendly and knowledgable. When I'm there, I've seen them take puppies out just to let them play/ run around/ be held. From what I've observed, they treat the animals as well as can be expected in the situation, it's the situation that needs to change. There is no way to sell puppies in a store without getting them from high volume breeders, taking them too early from the mother, keeping them isolated in small wire cages 90% of the day and still turn a profit on them. It's the practice of selling the dogs at all is to what I object. If you don't know why getting a dog from a high volume breeder is a bad thing, google high volume breeder and puppy mill.

Does anyone know what happens to these puppies if they aren't purchased? Are they usually put down to sleep or sent somewhere else to try to be placed in another home? I know someone mentioned if they aren't bought in a certain time, they are usually put down. Even if they do come from a puppy mill, they are still puppies and need to be treated with love and a good home too. But I do agree, puppy mills are horrible and do not support them, I just feel bad for each of the animals, it's not their fault....

I was also there today and at first I thought it was nice. But as soon as I saw the dog cages I felt something fishy... I bought my dog from a place similar to this. And just recently I ran I check on my breeder and he was in jail for animal abuse. Meaning he was from a puppy mill. I felt HORRIBLE! But at the time I bought him I didn't know any better. So as I started to suspect this today I felt the urge to ask them where they got their puppies from and if they ran checks on their breeders. But my boyfriend thought it would be too embarrassing and didn't let me but I will go again and see what they tell me... So NEVER buy pets form ANY stores such as these! Because they ARE from puppy mills where they live in small cages and practically live in their own filth!! So if you care for animals PLEASE never shop here! NEVER! Adoption is a MUCH better alternative. So many pets in need of homes... Thank you I will ask them and give you a follow-up. Her is a site with some facts about this HORRID place. http://dogrescue.meetup.com/16/calendar/5324949/
And remember if you shop there you will be supporting the terrible abuse to innocent animals.

Visited the store today...
At first I was amazed by all of the animals they have there, and was glad to see MOST of them were in decent enviornments. Unfourtanatly , the puppy mill puppies are locked in small cages behind a glass wall. Something needs to be done about the puppies and puppy mills supplying this place.

Jane S- Get your head out of the holes it's in.

You need to research what goes on in an actual puppy mill before you say there is no abuse.First of all, nobody called Pet Pad a puppy mill, they were called out on the FACT that the dogs COME from puppy mills therefore supporting puppy miills. Puppy mill dogs are often sick, lack social skills and can be aggressive, I know from personal experience. Locking an animal such as a dog in a cage to small is also a form of abuse.
I would much rather support large chains such as PetSmart who quit dealing with the disgusting puppy mill business and now supports animal shelters.

Yes their staff is helpful and courteous most of the time. However, they treat their dogs in a manner that is not fit, well to coin a phrase... for a dog. I wouldn't trust them to run a prison in Cuba.

Sheesh, many of you are vitriolic because you get to remain anonymous - get a grip. Are you the same people that ruined the pets page on Craigslist? Nothing is being abused in their store and if you have a problem with them, don't shop there. I'd much rather support a locally owned business than an impersonal chain - service at big box pet stores is no better. Employees at this store and larger chains are minimum-wage earners, so my expectations of their customer service abilities are pretty low to begin with. Are you expecting doctorate level vets to work there??? I've been there many times, nothing smells, nothing is hurt and it's just as clean as a chain pet store. Calling it a puppy mill is outrageous.

How can you write a review like that about an establishment and include a statement "...complete with fat people..." and feel good about yourself. A review such as your should be rendered ineffectual after such a foul remark. And by the way, I am a 5'1" 110 lb women. I do not take personal offense by your remark, but you should be ashamed of yourself.

This place is horrible! We don't call it Pet Pad we call it PET BAD. I went in to find a backpack with a perch in it for my bird. It was like stepping into a time machine and going back to the eighties. The store had a glass fronted wall with Puppy Mill dogs in cages. They had very little play area. It came complete with fat people standing around and pointing while tapping the window. It is up to all of us to force places like this to change! By the way the smell was foul!

A further foul about Pet Pad is they have gone in and somehow gotten rid of the negative reviews that were posted. Thats ok I will repost them. As for Melissa please note that she never evaluated the Pet Pad but gave them a rating of 3. By the way Melissa there were a lot of fat people standing around tapping on the glass was an observation and I should know I am a fat women. Sorry I don't feel ashamed of myself but you should if you don't have a problem with the way the dogs are treated. I know you work for the Pet Pad! Sorry you were unable to erase this post like you did the others! Good Job Insider Pages for allowing animal abuse to be reported and businesses not to monitor what the customers see!

This store is such a dissapointment in every way. Centrally located in Cary, feeding off Trader Joe's traffic....yet the employees are the rudest people I have ever come across in any store in a long time....The birds they sell are disgraceful....Marked WAAAAY up and fed nothing but seed mix and with filthy poopy water...A friend once made the mistake of buying a "hand-tamed" budgie from them. It died the next day! Their response was "oh well"......

Puppy mill puppies, pathetic parrots....What a disgrace! Keep away!!!!!! Too bad someone isn't doing this store right....actually trying to educate consumers and place the animals into proper homes.

This shop is out to make a buck and nothing more.

Pros: convenient location

Cons: mean employees who couldn't care less about their customers

.

The customer service in this store is by far the worst I have ever seen. They are rude and lazy. The store itself is filthy and disorganized. They overcharged me at the register and acted as if I was lying. I will NEVER return to this store again.

IF you can get an employee to help you or answer a question, they act as though you are bothering them! They are extremely rude and condescending!!! I told one employee I did not appreciate her rudeness. Her reply was, "oh well." So much for customer service, huh???

Their animals are not healthy!! PLEASE do not purchase an animal from them. First of all, they are overpriced and NOT well taken care of. Please consider a rescue or a REPUTIBLE breeder. If you want a pet, talk to other people and get suggestions. The animals at Pet Pad (formeraly Petland) have been overbred. You WILL have health issues with them!!!

They get poor dogs bred in puppymills and sale them to make money. I do not recommend them. They are out to make money and could care less about the wellbeing of the poor animals health etc. and where they came from. The puppy may be adorable for sale but imagine how it's poor mother is that is left at the puppymill and constantly bred in cramped filthy cages with no air etc. DO NOT BUY PETS FROM PETSTORES. I've seen the horror too many times. As long as the old mother with a missing leg and teeth can keep producing cute puppies they could care less about her. Think about the puppy before you buy. If you buy a puppy in a pet store you are supporting the 'horrors of puppymills'!!!!!!!
