For the past 30 Years, La Paz has strived to be Charlotte's best Mexican Restaurant, and with awards like Best Margarita, Best Vegetarian, Best Mexican, and Best Drink Specials who can argue? La Paz is a full service restaurant with a full bar, high deff TV's, and friendly service. Now serving Brunch on Sundays, La Paz also offers a great Catering Service that can be custom made to spice up your party or event just the way you want it.

The Scene
Located in a set of renovated warehouses and factories in the historic South End, La Paz has a distinctly urban look to it, though it manages to retain a sense of warmness. Curves and the color purple liven up the interior almost as much as the famously potent margaritas do the patrons.

The Food
The food, though a bit pricey for South of the Border items, will remind you that Mexican cuisine can actually be good. It's not as authentic as some of the places farther down South Boulevard, but you'll enjoy upscale versions of burritos, nachos and all the standards. La Paz is as much about the margarita and the atmosphere as it is about any of the food that comes with it.

Key Points

  • Catering, Brunch, Private Dining
  • Homemade chips and salsa
  • Classic Mexican recipes

The Inside Scoop

  1. Kick Back and Relax - The patio, partly shielded from busy South Boulevard by a three-foot brick wall, is a perfect place to have an after-work drink and snack.

La Paz Restaurante is the best

by Tristan M.

This place is CrAzy Good! The portions are huge, and the price is low. Their specials are what shocked me. $2 for a margarita (house) on sun, mon, and tues! The server I had on Saturday night was awesome. He made our dining experience that much better. I'd recommend the Fajitas... they are great!

Lackluster service!

by Dawn D. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 3,814

While the food at La Paz was okay, the service was not. Our drinks were only brought out after several reminders, and our requests from condiments with our meal were forgotten as well. Plenty of other Mexican restaurants to choose from for a better meal!

This restaurant offers big portions of food for your money. It offers good weekly specials. The margaritas are excellent too. Service and atmosphere are okay.

Overated

by WineLover1977

the salsa tasted like it just came out of a can..service is just ok..food is way too expensive for the stuff they actually serve you. I've tried and given this place 4 tries now..every time trying something different. It got worse each time. The nice patio and view looking over S. Blvd is the only good thing I can really say about this place

Food is mediocre at best..

by alxgrrl

The enchiladas had very little sauce, even smaller amount of filling, rice was pre-packaged mexican rice & the salsa was TERRIBLE..new to the area, very disappointed with the first Mexican restaurant I have tried in NC.

better than ever

by eatoutexpert

Who ever has done it! The old lapaz is back. We went Saturday night and had to wait for 45 min and it was worth it. The live music was fantastic. It happened to be Jimbo Chapman with Craven Melon. The place was rockin. I had the filet mignon fajitas which were out of this world and my date had shrimp fajitas. The chips and salsa rounded out the meal and as always the margaritas are truely the best in Charlotte. The waitstaff was very attentive even when things weren't quite right. If you haven't been to La Paz in a while it is a must go to restaurant for 2008.

Pros: valet parking, music

Cons: none

I gave La Paz one last chance and they blew it!

by KellyAP

I had not had good experiences with La Paz but saturday I gave them one last chance. The waitress forgot the queso dip we ordered, after 15 minutes I asked her about it and she went and got it. I ordered a pork enchilada and a chile relleno, and beef was in my enchilada and not pork. Then, the waitress took forever bringing the check while others got their checks quickly. She took so long coming for our checkcards that my sister took out her card and put down cash to get us OUT OF THERE. The service has not been so good when I was there previously. And outside, they had signs advertising new owners or new SOMETHING. well, there is still a problem...food was all right, it might have been better if I got what I ordered, but a waste of money as a dining experience.

Pros: cute inside

Cons: bad service all the way around

Disappointed.

by rv434

$12.99 is too much to pay for rice, beans and a burrito, especially when the quality is average at best.

It was ok

by koolaidsmyl

I've heard all the raving & am not sure where it is coming from. I've eaten at excellent Mexican & Southwest places & all have put this to shame. I expected good & received average.
There was nothing special to the food. Nothing a little different. Nothing above par.
I won't say I was disappointed, it was ok, but I wouldn't make any special trips for this.

Pros: Nice patio outside, great service.

Cons: Food was only average as compared to other places I've been.

Extremely mediocre food

by filmcrit

There was hardly any seasoning on this food! I was very disappointed in the taste of this food. Luckily, the restaurant is located in a great part of the city.

Pros: Great area of town, sealed patio is great for cold/rainy days, good margaritas

Cons: Food was not great, service was mediocre

good margaritas, bad food

by lafrank

bland and boring... cute place though. I would only recommend the pazarita margarita with tortilla chips and salsa selection.

Pros: margaritas, patio

Cons: bland unimaginative food, hard to find parking

Not authentic

by usasail

Based on word of mouth, maybe my expectations were a little high for this restaurant being called the best Mexican restaurant in Charlotte. Being from Texas and experiencing the real stuff, this wasn't it. The service was good, but everything else was just ok. It's not authentic, nor is it Tex-Mex, so I'm not sure how I would categorize it, but I won't be going back.

Charlotte's BEST Mexican Food

by parkthecar

La Paz has been a longtime family favorite of ours, since they were on Providence to today on South Blvd. The ambiance is great and the food is even better. I reccomend trying their Zapnin and their Green Salsa is a MUST!!! This place does not disappoint.

La Paz

by esmiles

Perfect in every way. Not "greasy-spoon" Mexican food at all.

Great to sit outside on the patio!

Be sure to order the "green salsa"

Tex-Mex at it's best in NC

by kbauman101

Being from Houston, Tex-Mex is the heart and soul of American "Mexican" food - La Paz does this very well. The beans are really refried for flavor, the fajitas are grilled, as they should be, and whopping large portions make take-homes great. The atmosphere is nice; been there on a busy night and a slooow Sunday afternoon. It beats a small taqueria when you want to eat somewhere nice. All in all, very satisfying.

Pros: great food, reasonable pricing, presentation good

Cons: parking!, parking, parking
