It is wonderful to come upon a business that still earns customers the old-fashioned way. By having a great product (tons of books) arranged neatly and very interestingly, making you find things you did not even know you were looking for! The friendly customer service reps made me glad I went a little out of my way. The personal recommendations on the books arranged everywhere made me aware of new authors.

Upon hearing about the selection of books from some reviewers, I brought my parents who were visiting from Singapore, only to have them accused by a female store staff of mis-positioning their books (in fact it was someone else before us who had misplaced the books), and by another male staff at checkout who couldn't wait to shoo them off after they have paid for 5 books. I feel certain after these 2 incidents that they serve a certain clientele of Caucasian appearance only. It was a sad day for us as my parents were seriously looking to buy books for their grandchild, only to be treated so shabbily.

I wish I could give more than five stars to Quail Ridge Books. It's a fine store, offering splendid service (personalized, especially when you're hunting for something not easy to find) and a very wide selection of books. But it's more than a store; it has become a center for our community, and often builds community through programs that go beyond the expected author visits. Panels and symposiums on important topics of the day feature knowledgeable community leaders. The staff welcomes you each time you enter as if you're a long-lost relative! I take out-of-town visitors to Quail Ridge the way I would take them to the NC Museum of Art or to Umstead Park; it's one of the finest features of our region. Quail Ridge is one of Raleigh's most valuable treasures!

I now live in Atlanta but still order almost all of my books from this fabulous store. Any time I come to Raleigh, I see my family and then run off to QRB. I value the recommendations that the staff provide; NEVER before have I come across such a well-read and intelligent staff and the selections of books at this store is the best I know of. Long live Quail Ridge Books!!!

This is one of the finest bookstores in the U.S.. I grew up in bookstores, I've worked in bookstores, but nowhere, ever, have I met such an enthusiastic, knowledgeable staff. There is no question they won't answer, no book they won't knock themselves out helping you find. Nancy and Jim Olson are passionate, brilliant booksellers who care deeply about good reading and music, and they have a fantastic, warm, always welcoming group of colleagues working with them. Everyone who works there is a discriminating reader and very responsive to customers' particular interests. Quail Ridge Books and Music is one of the treasures of Raleigh and N.C. We are so fortunate to have them in our community.

As the author of 16 published novels, I have signed books and bought books all over the country for the past 18 years. Quail Ridge Books is in a class by itself. The staff's knowledge of books and publishing, their emphasis on community service, and their genuine love of music and the written word is unparalelled. Although I live in Atlanta, whenever I travel to or through Raleigh, QRB is always a must-stop. I only wish Atlanta had a store half as good as QRB.

Quail Ridge Bookstore is not just a place to buy a book. It is a place to rejuvenate one's spirit among not only books, but among people who care about books and about the people who read them. Whenever I need a little more focus in my life, this is a place where I go. Nancy, Jim, Sarah, Helen, Trish and everyone who works in the store helps provide an atmosphere of finding just the right book for the right time. It is truly a special place in the city of Raleigh.

In all Raleigh, there is no place I'd rather visit than Quail Ridge Books. I always feel welcome, in person or on the phone. The staff is always unobtrusively obliging, pleasant and immensely informed. And the in-store author and other events are always worthwhile.
I just don't know how QRB could be any better. I love it dearly.

It has come to my attention the Quail Ridge has gotten a critical review. If that is worthy of note it is only because it is may be a first. For 30 years and from one location to another we have followed Nancy and Jim Olson and their band of merry booksellers faithfully. We did so not out of affection, though great affection we have come to feel, but rather because this is an exceptional store populated with a collection of unexpected books and staffed by very well-read folks whose knowledge of books is vast and whose love of reading equals or exceeds our own. Having travelled far and wide, we have never encountered another store that was the equal of Quail Ridge. FG and CG

Quail Ridge Books is recognized not only by its customers but by others throughout the United States as one of the finest bookstores in the country. I have been going to this store practically since it opened and have found the staff always to be helpful but certainly not pushy, and the manager, Sarah Goddin, is one of the most accomplished managers an employer could hope to find.

As to the choice of reading, I can say that the store offers only the finest in books and CDs. The store always has displays of the most pretigious literature so that a customer does not have to wade through table after table of discounted books that are worthy only of the coffee table. Obviously the publishers see the store as a focal point for promoting their writers as one can see the likes of Joyce Carol Oates, David Sedaris, and Garrison Keillor at the Quail Ridge Books podium. Many of our local authors, including Charles Frazier, contribute a good deal of their success to the support of Nancy Olson and her staff.

I am still reeling that Bill and Michelle visited the store I know, and encourage them to take a second look as soon as possible. It would be a shame if they have to spend their book purchasing days in big box book stores.

I frequently bring out-of-town guests to Quail Ridge Books & Music, sometimes just to browse and sometimes to hear some of the world-class authors who give readings nearly every day. I also come to the town-hall meetings about vital issues of the day, such as health care, which gives us a chance to talk with our elected officials and local experts.

Of course, the book selection makes it all go ... hand picked by the literate and lovely readers who run the store. The staff is unfailingly helpful in suggesting gift books or books on a new topic. If they don't have it, they will order it. There's a great selection of jazz, classical music, and cards too.

Whenever I make a list comparing the benefits of living in Raleigh to any other place, Quail Ridge Books makes my list of the top-ten reasons for staying here.

Quail Ridge Books is my home away from home, and the destination for book lovers in the Triangle. I think of the staff as personal friends. Sara, the manager, is the most professional and knowledgeable bookseller I've met. The author events the store hosts have put Raleigh on the literary map. Bestselling authors, ex-presidents and vice-presidents, and writers in every category from cooking to poetry make the trek yearly to Quail Ridge Books. This bookstore is a rare jewel. Raleigh is so lucky to have it.

As a recent transplant to the Triangle I just had to express my eternal gratitude for this gem of a bookstore in Raleigh. Run by charming local owners Nancy and Jim Olson, super manager Sarah and a dedicated staff of true readers, Quail Ridge is an oasis of culture, near-nightly and world-class author events, book clubs for every reader's taste, the most beautiful greeting cards I've found anywhere in North Carolina, and amusing book related gifts. Their children's section is a dream, with experts like a former children's librarian available to recommend appropriate books for all ages.

Staff members have spent hours with me chasing down books for my own exotic needs and gifts for my loved ones.

Whenever I'm homesick for Los Angeles or San Francisco, I head straight for the Quail.

Just wanted to say thanks to a most excellent and loved store.

All I can think is that those 2 negative reviews must have been written either by chain store investors who see their stock quotes falling or by one of the shoplifters who have been asked not to return. What a totally false picture of one of the best stores in the Triangle in ANY category. The sales staff are courteous and usually say, "Let me know if I can help you find something" before leaving browsers alone. And to attack the manager, one of the nicest, most professional women in the world? Unbelievable. Can't help wondering what store those two nay-sayers were actually in. QRB "dark and musty"? Oh please.

This is the best bookstore I have ever visited and I've visited bookstores all over the world. Sara is one of the best managers - I've worked with her years ago and never once heard her mistreat anyone. I've never experienced anyone stalking me in this store or following me around asking me if I need help.

You couldn't be any more wrong about your review of this store. It is my favorite and I've spent many hours in it. I've never found the prices to be different here than any other place that sells books including grocery stores. I recommend Quail Ridge Books all the time and will continue to do so.

I live in Durham, but I find myself in Quail Ridge on a very regular basis. They are always having some great readings/signings by my favorite authors, and they always do a fantastic job of being organized and efficient while also being homey and inviting. I also signed up for the email newsletter, and I enjoy Nancy's comments on what she's reading. I find out about a lot of wonderful books that way!

My parents also love Quail Ridge... They drive 2 hours from South Carolina for many of the events, and because my dad is an educator, he gets a free membership in their discount club. It's a great value for them, and the staff is always friendly and helpful. I would recommend this store to anyone!

I have never been in a bookstore that can match QR. The staff get to know you and what you like and give great book recommendations. They were one of the first stores in the area to give author readings and are very supportive of writers, especially local writers and poets who would not be given the time of day in a big box store. Their community appreciates this and even nationally they have gotten quite a reputation. A few years ago Publishers Weekly named them the best independent bookstore in the United States. Moreover, the store is very supportive of local charities and hosts book drives for them and has a used book sale every year for one of these charities. The kindness and warmth from the owners and staff are just amazing.

PROS: Great selection, attentive staff
CONS: In Raleigh, which is a bit of a drive since I have moved to Durham.

The store is full of ignorant and rude people who have their own 'Quail Ridge' club of customers. They need to give up the sad song of being an 'independent store.' Who cares, taht is exactly what the mom and pop hardware stores said when Lowe's blew into town. The store is dark and musty, and exactly why they don't make bookstores like this anymore.

PROS: NOTHING
CONS: RUDE STAFF, NO SOUTHERN COMFORT.

I have been a customer since the early days at Quail Corners Shopping Center. The service has always been the best...you can go in with partial title, only the author's first name or a vague description of the book---and they can still "name that book". With discounts for the readers club, and regular sales for the members--prices are great. Nancy has created a book lovers heaven!

Customer service is the reason why I buy all my books at Quail Ridge. I've sent numerous emails with requests and always gotten a quick reply. The staff will also research items if you don't have all the information. Just send an email with a description and they'll do the rest, and hold the book for you. Plus, as an independent store you are helping the local economy and not some big corporation headquartered in California.

I love all the events Qualridge sponsors. Paula Deens was there earlier, and they love having southern writers like Sue Monk Kidd and Pamela Duncan visit. My favorite, though, is the Harry Potter Parties. Ain't nobody don't like celebrating the release of a new Harry Potter at the Quailridge.

Ok, so its in a shopping center, not on the corner. Quail Ridge is a great small bookstore though. You get an intimate feel in the store, and the people there are super helpful in helping you find what you need, and suggesting some great reads as well.

Perfect for the trendy sweater and loafer Izod crowd, everyone else should just move on. Great atmosphere, but be prepared to pay much higer prices than just about any place else in the area. You're probably paying for the ambience and snob appeal. Not worth it.
