I joined Peak Fitness at the Harrisburg location in 2001 and have been a member through the "change" to ZX Fitness. At the Harrisburg location I would have rated the club as fair - Staff was rarely friendly and never helpful but the classes and teachers were superb. The equipment was fair. However, when the Harrisburg location shut its doors I tried to continue my membership at the University location but the classes became so crowded that I frequently was not allowed in Zumba, and the environment was less than desired.

At the beginning of March, I went in to cancel my long time membership. I was currently on a month to month and spoke with Dean about cancelling. He convinced me to freeze my account temporarily so that I could think about my decision before cancelling. I specifically asked if any money would be drafted from my account as I had been down that road in the summer of 2001 before, and also heard horror stories from other ZX members about freezing but he absolutely assured me that no money would be taken from my account during the freeze period. He lied. I was drafted $25 that month. So I decided at that point to cancel my membership.

I went in again at the beginning of April. I spoke with Dean again. He apologized but offered no reconciliation. I proceeded to close my account in which he told me once more that no more money would be taken from my account. I now understand that a 30 day notice is required, per Jonjula with the Univesity location, however that is not what Dean told me, and I specifically and clearly asked so that there would be no misunderstandings. However, on April 27th, $25 was drafted from my account, which was odd in itself considering the money is usually taken on the 5th. I went in to the location again on Monday, March 30th. Dean was not present so I spoke with Jonjula. He apologized for Dean's mishaps and assured me that we would look in to the situation and escalate to Rachel, the liaison between the location and corporate, according to him. He even went so far to tell me to please trust him, that he would most certainly call me by Thursday, June 2nd. When I hadn't heard from him on Monday, June 6th, I called and he acted like he had no clue who I was or that we had even met. He assured me again he'd speak with Rachel and he'd even have Dean call me that day. He lied. I did not hear from Dean. I called back on Friday, June 10th, and spoke with Jonjula once more. (Dean is shockingly never there when I call). Once more he acted as if he wasn't quite sure who I was and told me that I needed to speak with Rachel. He gave me 2 numbers. One number directed me right back to the University location - how convenient - and the other one is never answered. I have now left 3 messages on the corporate number but have yet to hear back. I wonder if they only hire liars or if they train them to be that way.

On June 15th, I emailed the Univ. office contact email asking for email addresses for people in the Corporate office. Dean emailed back stating he was the GM at the Univ. location and could he help me. So I went in to detail of all of the above. He apologized for the "mix-up" and emailed: "ZX policy states that all monthly membership dues will be frozen with your membership for the time you have requested however the annual 25.00 dues are still processed."

Interesting that I specifically asked that question and he told me differently.

He proceeded to tell me that he personally talked with Rachel and I would be reimbursed $25. He stated it would take 7-10 business days to process. That was on June 15th.

When June 29th passed, the 10th business day, I still did not have my money. But I waited. Then, finally, on Monday, July 11th, I emailed him again asking for my money that was promised to me. He replied that there were notes on my account staying it would be sent the following week and the Holiday had something to do with the delay. Isn't July 4th after June 29th?? I asked to know specifically when I would receive. He told me he had no way of knowing. So I called him. Shocked that he was actually there.

First phone call he interrupted me when I detailed to him the lies he told, and then he hung up on me. I called back. After childish banter back and forth I finally was able to tell him without him interrupting me all his lies. His response?? "I didn't lie." But yet he couldn't deny anything I told him. Afterwards, another hang up. I called back. After one more, I called back and finally got the receptionist. I received the same number for Corporate again. I called Corporate again and SURPISE - had to leave another message. Still waiting for that return call. Thankfully, I was able to reach someone in billing who confirmed my check had been sent - but not until after June 29th, like Dean had told.

The moral to the story is if you join ZX Fitness, expect lies, lies and more lies - and a very unprofessional GM.

This is about ZX Fitness: DO NOT JOIN THIS HORRIBLE CLUB!!! They offer you a 3 day evaluation period and once you find the club in horrible disrepair with old broken equipment and dirty conditions that aggravate allergies, they refuse to refund the full amount.

They basically stole $70 from me. Don't let it happen to you. There are much better gyms all over the area.

I got enrolled in the Harrisburg location, but they closed that center. In the letter to us, they wrote - the only reason to close was that even at the last hour, the could not secure the lease. THIS IS FALSE. Now, in the harrisburg location, there is a banner hanging - says some another fitness is coming there. I think ZX terminated the location to reduce cost, and put the people in other centers (but why should we take the burden of driving longer distances).

Also, i am hearing that other ZX fitness are closing soon. Yet, i think they are actively pursuing people to join, to benefit from enrollment fees and contract bindings. I am quitting XZ fitness.

Close to Harrisburg center, there is another gym starting March 1. they are offering $1 down membership, $10 a month membership fee and no contract.

I cannot wait to get out of this ZX fitness. I spoke to the manager at the adjoining center, and he is the most rude and inconsiderate person i ever met in my life.

WOW! I am glad I found these posts!! We cancelled our membership over two years ago and have been going through the same issues that everyone listed is. ZXFitness continued to charge our account for 4 months after we cancelled. We finally had to close the account and have our bank do a charge back to get our money back. Now I am receiving letters from collection agencies claiming that we owe almost $400!! When I contact the agency and complain, they research it and find that they can't prove the debt either so they close the case. About two months later, I will receive another letter from a different agency and we go through the process all over again!! If there are still people out there that are willing, I say we get a class action suit going against ZXFitness to get back any money that is still owed and to shut down their ruthless extortion practices and maybe even shut down their gyms!!

ZX fitness on 15-501 in Durham Sucks. Some bad breath, tall lightskinned brother named "Ray" is definitely an igmorant bastard. My wife and I went to cancel our membership and he purposely made us wait for 45 to an hour while "Ed" (his manager) leaned over his desk lollygagging with a buddy about old times instead of assisting with customers. Afterwards, we decided to leave and comeback 7hrs later hoping another crew would be on but there was only "Ray" and some other idiots. This guy continued to ignore us for 2 hrs while we had a very interesting conversation with one of their employees who feels the same way about them. However, we decided to have the bank stop all drafts to the gym (screw the collections on the credit report) b/c the feedback from this company with the BBB will definitely cover our asses when we go purchase anything on credit......
STAY AWAY FROM ZX FITNESS ON 3900 CHAPEL-HILL BLVD IN DURHAM........
They will be going out of business soon........I promise !!

Gyms are only as good as their management. This one is terrible! For they are completely dishonest! I joined under the pretense that there would be no contract, and that I could cancel my membership at any time. When I canceled my membership the end of February, the gym has continued to draft money out of my account. It is now MAY. I am still in the middle of solving this problem. Management seems completely unconcerned and said the last time I called. "I'd check on it, but our system is down right now." Maybe it is...but I doubt it. Beware this gym!

ZX Fitness is a joke. Not only do they have the same crappy management style at Peak, but they are irresponsible and embarassing as a company. I was just waiting outside of the Steele Creek location waiting for over a 1/2 hour for the person with the ONE KEY to open the place to show up, and they never did! People are still waiting, at 8am on a Saturday. Be responsible people..or here's a thought-MAKE COPIES OF THE KEY. It's ridiculous to wake up early and drive down there only to wait and have to leave without my workout. THis happened numerous times at the Arrowood/S Tryon Peak location, so clearly some things never change. I may have to look into CLUB FITNESS which is right across the street and less than half price.

WORK ON YOUR MANAGEMENT & RESPONSIBILITY SKILLS ZX, unless you plan on losing clients and filing for bankruptcy just like Peak did.

This gym will steal your money! They will continue to bill you even after you have taken all the necessary steps to cancel any membership. I recently moved away from Charlotte and wanted to cancel my membership. After filling out all necessary paperwork they told me there would be one more payment since it takes 30 days to cancel. After the 30 days they continued to bill me upwards of 260$. I have called multiple times! The corporate office number is (704) 200-2101... although when you call it every choice possible sends you to a voicemail. About 95% of the voicemails say mailbox full and hang up on you, most likely due to all the complaints. If you do find one to leave a message dont expect a call back, i've left close to 50 messages with no return call. I resulted to contacting Better Business Bureau (BBB) and am waiting to hear back from them. My next step will be to take them to small claims court if nothing is settled. Peak Fitness has already filed for bankruptcy according to BBB and is going to be shutting their doors soon. DO NOT MAKE THE MISTAKE OF ENTERING INTO ANY CONTRACT WITH THEM OR PAYING MONTH TO MONTH! ONCE THEY GET YOUR BANK INFO THEY WILL STEAL YOUR MONEY!

Peak Fitness was recently acquired by Fuzion Investment Capital....called ZX Fitness
Peak Fitness recently closed their Pineville location because it was not a profitable facility. I had been a member at the Pineville facility for a little over a year and had watched that facility degrade over a period of time.
I expect most of the bad reviews for Peak Fitness are the result of a desperate, flawed management group. Let's hope ZX improves the facilities and billing situation.

December 4th I requested that my membership to Peak Fitness be canceled. I was told that their would be no problem. That someone would fax me a form and then for me to fax it back. That my cancellation may take up to 30 days. I never received any fax. I called the number they have listed for customer service on several occasions leaving messages. I also sent several emails through their web site. According to Peak Fitness Rep Erin they never received anything. Before my cancellation my auto withdrawal was set up for the 29th of each month for $24.99. Since my cancellation I received 3 additional charges. The first for $44.99 on Christmas Eve in which I called customer service and emailed Peak again. On January 18th I received another $44.99 charge. After spending several hours calling repetitively I finally reach someone. They had my local branch Manager contact me. On January 19 I received an email from Erin B stating that my membership was canceled and I would be receiving a refund for the previous withdraws. Then on January 21st they withdrew another $25.00. At this point they have withdrawn $114.98 in unauthorized charges in one months time. I have already reported them to Consumer Affairs, BBB & Channel 9 News. I am sure if this is happening to me that it must be happening to others as well!

Peak Fitness also discriminates against breastfeeding mothers. The manager of the Durham, NC outfit humiliated and embarassed me in front of staff, members and children in the childcare area while I was breastfeeding out 10 month old son under a blanket. This place should close it's doors! They are mismanaged and a sorry excuse for a "health club"!!!!

I agree with all the billing complaints below. I canceled my contract back in February and am still getting bills from some place called National Fitness. After all three contracts were cancelled, this outfit went ahead and auto-renewed and started billing again. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE AND THIER CONTRACT!!!!!!!

It's so funny because every complaint that was written here I understand exactly where thyre coming from. The ABC billing company are HORRIBLE! Ms Kimberly McDowell from the ABC billing company In charlotte, nc sounds like she gets lots of complaints from the peak fitness customers. My opinion, don't sign the contract unless u want to get BAMBOOZLED!

I used to think very highly of the Peak Fitness on Pineville-Matthews Rd but it has rapidly gone downhill. The equipment is not being kept up, the lockers are falling apart in the locker rooms and they took down all of the TV's in the cardio area. If that isn't enough, they aren't adequately air conditioning the building. It is sometimes hotter in the gym than it is outside.Too bad. Used to be a good place to work out.

This gym moved to the Independence location in Matthews, so Crown Point location is actually another gym now. Peak is a scam in my opinion. They get you on automatic billing and then it's hard to get off, even when your contract is done. The NC Attorney General has sanctioned them in Jan '09 and they have long standing orders to advise him of just about everything they do. They are also ordered to clean up their billing and advertising practices. However, if you believe that such an order makes anyone change their ways or suddenly find their ethical center, then go ahead and join because you deserve what you get. These people are happy to sign you and take your cash at the gym. But try to cancel when your contract is done and you have to send off a letter and hope they honor it. I found out they don't. So they keep billing you. Change your credit card as I did and they still bill you, tell you they don't know anything about your cancellation, and won't let you cancel until you pay what they've charged you after you cancelled plus their penalty fees. They just keep charging and charging until you pay. That's their customer rentention plan. Google up the Peak Fitness gyms and find that those that have reviews are almost all bad. Check their BBB rating and find out that it's an F. All the other gyms in town combined don't have half as many complaints as this outfit.

we have been members for awhile and like the gym. We choose this gym bc it had free childcare WITH a monitor that you can see while you are working out. I like the fact that I can see my kids while I am working out and the girls in the childcare are very nice and helpful and love playing with the kids in the room. Over all it is a good gym, classes and location.

I signed up with Peak Fitness after being told that I could pay for my membership month to month vs it being taken out of my account monthly for an entire year. I explained to the representative that I didnot need to work out excessively and only wanted to engage in a few of the exercise classes when I fel t the need. Needless to say, the following month, I notice my credit card being billed for $25 and the ABC Billing stated they could not do anything about it. I signed up on an corporate account however it didnt matter because they still exhibited deceptive behavior. When I gave the guy my credit info he stated he was only charging me for the initial deposit. Obvisiously they train their representatives on how to be good liars!

They will lie to get you under contract and take no responsibility for what they tell you verbally in order to get you to sign the contract. Take the contract home and read it before you sign it or, better yet, avoid Peak Fitness and ABC Financial (their sleazy billing company) altogether.

Peak Fitness in Matthews is a great gym. I always feel welcome at the gym and I am not some huge fitness buff. (by any means) The staff always makes me feel welcome. I love the classes. The instructors are all so nice. They gym is also very clean. I also signed up for the tanning package and was not very impressed with the tanning bed though. I rarely use it, but am locked into a 1 year contract. Overall, it is a very nice place.
